Rude Rude staff! They take way way too long to even approach you with a menu with very few customers in the restaurant. Forget about thank you & being friendly. They even refused to honor my gift card, what a stressful experience. Ugh. read more

I love Daikanyama! My favorite roll is the Kuchi roll. I love watching them torch the meat, and the staff is friendly. It's really hard for me to find quality sushi around Boston, since I'm pretty picky, and Daikanyama does not disappoint ! read more

Very fresh- let us in a few minutes before opening- and most of all- delicious for a fair price. While their octopus stands out, the duck was also quite good- albiet a bit on the chewy side. Service was excellent. read more

Phenomenal service, the moment we walked in they turned down the air conditioning at our request. Very attentive service, they've always been accommodating with the special dietary needs of one of the people in our party. The food is really fresh and innovative, we love the creative chef's sushi rolls. The atmosphere is inviting and serene. It's a hidden gem, tucked away at the bottom of Bloomingdale's - just a great surprise! read more

Ok!! This is one that I would never have expected! It blew me away!!! I am a Sushi/Japanese cuisine maven!! My husband and I could eat Japanese food/sushi 4 times a week and be very happy! I thought we knew every sushi joint in the state but this one eluded me until now. A new girlfriend introduced me to a truly hidden jewel!! Since I never walk into a dept. Store of any kind I have a good excuse for not knowing about Daikanyama in the cosmetics area of Bloomingdales Chest Nut Hill. We made our way through the over lit, over staffed counters of face paint and fragrances to a large wooden doorway. Once we stepped inside, the noise, lights and chatter stopped. I felt like I was entering a Japanese temple or shrine. The clean lines, dim lighting and soft ambient music made this an oasis. I knew I was truly in for a treat! Very lovely staff took us to a great table in the small but roomy dining area. When we were given the specials menu on an iPad I kinda giggled. Oh so high tech Oh so 2014!! It was an extensive specials list with images to help make the choices even harder!! We started with the tuna tartar and avocado salad. Awesome and the presentation was quintessential Japanese perfection! We tried a few special maki rolls, all beautiful and yummy. Weren't going to but since we are gluttons we asked for the rock shrimp too Oh my. Perfect tempura fried shrimp tossed in a slightly spicy wasabi mayo on a bed of leafy greens. WOW!! No room for another bite we turned down dessert but, promised next time. It ended up being a decadent and pricy lunch but a special girls day out deserved it! I think one an go and not break the bank for sure. Elegant, modern and insanely delicious. Go, be enticed by it all and enjoy! Next a massage and a cocktail somewhere ;) read more

Service lacking. Fish market and Oshii are better. But good quality fish!! Nice decor. Weird though it says you at a Bloomingdales !

Place was a small establishment that had really friendly servers. Cute design to the restaurant but you don't really notice how dim the place is until you leave and is pretty much blinded for ten minutes when you walk outside into the sunlight. It was a cute idea to have their specials on a tablet but they didn't explain how to use it so I spend a while trying to slide from each photo which only resulted in enlarging the picture. Apparently you tap the sides! I ordered a sunset maki to start and as our meals my boyfriend and I ordered a Seafood Nabeyaki udon and a luncheon salmon teriyaki. Everything came out fairly quickly which was a plus. Our server was really good about prepping our tables with plates to share and soy sauce without us having to ask. Sunset maki was delicious! It's slightly warm from the seared top but it actually seemed to taste better that way. I really liked the broth in the seafood udon but picked out most of the seafood because it was rather chewy. The salmon teriyaki was delish but would have loved extra sauce on it. Only issue I had was the server didn't offer us dessert and just straight gave us the check! I wanted my fried ice cream damnit. All in all the service wasn't bad and the food was filling. Wish they would lower the price on the drinks though....the portion for drinks seems so small. read more

Plain, simple and highly competent. I've only eaten here for weekend lunch - so have only ordered their standard sushi/sashimi lunch special (not available on Sundays). The plate featured a fairly standard selection: tuna maki, tuna sashimi, salmon sashimi, mackerel nigiri, tuna nigiri, salmon nigiri and shrimp nigiri. The lunch special includes salad, miso and 2 dumplings. What sets Daikanyama apart? Execution and attention to detail. Although I enjoyed the actual fish, I'd put it on a par with Fugakyu. That said, everything that surrounded the fish proved delicious and well-made. The wasabi possessed strong flavor, as did the pickled ginger, the ginger dressing on the salad and little blob of seaweed salad that accompanied the dumplings. Even the mori wrap on the tekka maki possessed strong flavor! I also enjoyed the shrimp tempura appetizer - light, flaky panko that nevertheless proved crunchy and flavorful. Very well done. Nice setting (especially for a mall restaurant). read more

Best sushi hands down anywhere near chestnut hill or newton. Great service and great food!!! read more

I've come here several times when either shopping at Bloomingdales or just simply because. I must say, every consecutive time I have been has been better and better. The decor itself is very trendy, modern, yet maintains a good charm to it with that Japanese feel. As for the food and drinks, the beer selection is better than most, offering a few Western but mostly Japanese beers that while not as great as the Korean Hite still offer a decent taste. The sushi is where the accolades go. Creative, yet simple, and surprisingly not devastating to the wallet, each one has a design catered to preference. The best I've had so far were the Fuji maki (with Fuji apple inside), the sweet Daisy maki (topped with mango for an almost-dessert feel to it), and the Kirin maki complete with white tuna, tempura crumbs, and a delightful taste to it even on the way down. All sushi I've had so far has never been overly fishy nor has it been tiny, eight pieces per roll which matches the price. Their katsu was also of worthy note, a generous portion of rice to go with it. Sometimes the waiters/waitresses would seem a bit rushy and sometimes the lack of some items more than once, but overall I highly recommend this. read more

The lunch and dinner menu may be magnificent but based on our admittedly limited experience from their tea menu, we will never find out. At 7.95 and up for tea, Daikanyama has placed itself in the category of fancy hotels that provide proper service with fancy loose leaf blends. Here, you get a tea bag, a pot of hot water, and a few packets of Splenda. Tofu cheesecake amounts to a tiny cube of slightly sweetened tofu and one strawberry with nothing so much as a crust. But the most confounding dessert is the curiously named "Honey Toast." Talk about lost in the translation. What arrives looks like a gingerbread-style house made from Wonder Bread, whipped cream, and Bosco decorated with a few grapes. It is like a dessert made by--and for--a kindergarten class. The atmosphere is pleasant if slightly theme park and the service is well intentioned, but if this admittedly small slice of the menu reflects the overall quality of Daikanyama's cuisine (and it should), you'll find better mall dining at a food court. read more

As a person with allergies I approached the maitre d' and asked how I could be accommodated. The response was unexpected - I was told I should eat somewhere else. Having a specific allergy to a single seafood, a SINGLE seafood has never kept me from dining - even in seafood restaurants. No assurance could be made and no alternative was offered. I was shocked and insulted. But, now I can share my experience. Food allergies are not accommodated. I won't go back. read more

Very random location in Bloomingdales, which was hard to find. I am giving this place 2 stars because of the vegetable/tofu udon noodles in soy sauce broth that I got. The soup tasted bland, like lightly salted water. It came with some spinach, mushrooms, slices of tofu, and the noodles. Honestly, I probably could have made this dish myself for $2, but it ended up costing me $15+ tip and tax. There was nothing special about the sushi roll that we got as well. The pieces were really small. The service was average, and the waitress seemed snooty. There are much better sushi/ramen/udon restaurants in Boston. read more

This place is a hidden gem. Sushi selection was not your typical Japanese fare. We had the live uni (sea urchin) and fatty tuna. It's $70-$90 for lunch but worth it. It's quiet, clean and friendly. Wasabi shumai was excellent though I kept burping up wasabi for a couple of hours. I was going to give it 4 stars but couldn't think of a good reason to take a star off. read more

Daikanyama has always been on of my favorite sushi places in this state. It's always fresh, rice done right, nice acid balance on the palates in every dish. I highly recommend this. I am a bit disappointed that this is connected to a mall, but I often make the drive to Lexington's location instead and it's always worth it. read more

Exquisite little space tucked away and very soothing style. Every place setting and dish is so well crafted it is a work of art. The service is excellent and understated. The prices are high but everything is fresh and healthy. So this is a way to treat yourself, it is no ordinary Japanese restaurant. read more

Spicy tuna roll consists of chopped tuna mixed with panko breadcrumbs. The sushi chefs use panko as a filler to not have to fill the roll fully with tuna. Spoke to management about why they do it and the response was "that's how all Spicy Tuna rolls are made". While obviously that was a lie, I decided not to question his knowledge on sushi and I will take my business elsewhere. I will be informing me peers not to eat here as well. read more

Thank you Daikanyama for a wonderful evening this past Monday. The decor was beautiful and peaceful, the staff were amazing, and the yellow tail special had me placing a second order of it. The wine choices were great as well. Overall we had a wonderful night, which made my daughter's 16 birthday very magical. We'll be back for sure. read more

Beautiful restaurant, beautiful food and very tasty too. I have been about two dozen times and have never been disappointed. The hamachi with the chef's special soy sauce is one of my favorite dishes anywhere. How can you not like a dish called The fish is always fresh and there are a large variety of dishes from which to choose. Even my non-sushi, non-fish fan friends like it here. The restaurant is really pretty inside and the service is quite good. The server brings over a nook so you can scroll through the pictures to see some of the food. Sounds a little corny but if you are like me, it is really helpful. It was here we discovered "ebi chilli" lovely shrimp lighted sauced with a spicy sauce in a lovely noodle basked. I was a little skeptical when it first opened, but our options are limited out here in the burbs so I gave it a try and am glad I did. read more

This Resturant is super authentic with reasonable price. Each dish was so delicious and looked like a piece of art. Will definitely come again!! The staff are super friendly and we got a table immediately!! Love this place!!! read more

Hands DOWN - my favorite sushi spot in all of Boston - please folks - disregard any mention/comment made about this being "mall sushi". It happens to be in a mall, but it also happens to be amazing food and people. Period. The service is exceptional. Especially given that it is a small sushi restaurant where you might (understandably) be expected to eat and go. I come here often - and has never failed me once since they opened. Sometimes I'm solo, often I'm with a group - always very welcoming and the menu has options for all ages and tastes. read more

Situated in a quiet corner of Bloomingdale. Fresh food and cosmetics. Aren't this just heaven to the other dominant half of the world.

Wow! I didn't expect this place. It is in a mall after all. But the sushi is so delicious. They bring you a tablet with pictures of all the sushi specials, which is great because some of them look so appetizing. This is one of the few sushi places where I venture outside the norm of sake and unagi sushi. I try many of their rolls and have rarely been disappointed. It has usually been pretty quiet when we go and we can get a table right away. The service is very attentive and you can see the chefs making the sushi right at the bar which is fun. I highly recommend this place. The only thing that I would caution against is that it isn't a really happenin' hip place, or doesn't seem to be the few times I have been there. read more

Mmm definitely my go to restaurant. I'm in Newton quite often to visit family and this is one of our favorite restaurant to go to with the kids. The sushi is always fresh and delicious and our meals never disappoint. (the sushi doesn't meet the oishii standard but is still definitely delicious) I always order the vegetable udon which comes in a tasty soup with thick noodles. If you get the shrimp tempura as well make sure to take the shrimp tempura out of the soup and onto a different plate the moment the food arrives, or else you will be munching on soggy shrimp. for dessert we always get the tempura ice cream, it's honestly the best tempura ice cream I've ever eaten. The only complaint I have is that the restaurant is extremely small; however, the beautiful decor definitely makes up for that. Definitely check it out. read more

Highly recommend the goose liver sushi and the naruto, probably the best Japanese food in Boston. Really pleasant experience with my bf: ))) and definitely will visit again. read more

My favorite place for sushi! I love how nice, how professional they dress and they have an amazing menu. I come here for lunch and dinner.

I felt this place gave me a cafeteria feel. It also seems to cater towards seniors who like to nose in your conversation. I like that because then I can spice it up for them. The service was hit and miss, we were handed the menus and a tablet was dropped on our table showing the specials. Three minutes later, the server returned and asked if we were ready...not quite. The evening was just me and a friendly obaasan so it was a natural fit for the seniors...help me. Anyway, I the bill came to $160, included a lot sushi, some side dishes and some sake for Obaasan. I will give them a point and say the presentation was well done and I also liked it when mamasan came by the table to inquire if all was well and if we enjoyed the food. The Sushi was average, have had better, much better and a helluva worse. I'm giving this three stars, certainly would not return, Why the three stars? Obaasan liked it, that's why. Then again she would be happy with fish out of the Charles. read more

Big fan of Daikanyama! Between the Japanese restaurants I've tried in the Waltham/Newton/Wellesley area, this is probably my favorite. It is on more of the upscale side with prices being relatively expensive compared to other Japanese restos in the area but it is so worth the price. I wouldn't describe this as fine dining at all but borderline formal to smart casual. Dishes are much more traditional than its neighbors. Ambiance and music is peaceful and nice, but still casual enough to just pop in. Tatsuta age with the side of spicy mayo was great. I was also very pleased with the Chicken Katsu, breading was thin and crisp and meat was very tender. I don't know if I would recommend the dish as a don however. Cutlery was such a refreshing change from other Japanese restaurants, as well as the uniforms of the staff. Great service, but have not tried enough of the food to give it a better review just on food alone. read more

I think Daikanyama is good for mall dining. The decor is really simple and elegant. I had a rice and pork dish that was decent, but the pork was a little fatty. The salad that came with the dish was fine, but nothing special. I ordered chilled saki and they were out of it. My friend had sushi - sashimi and a caterpiller roll - I had a bite of the caterpillar roll and thought it was excellent! I will order that next time I go. read more

Fantastic sushi! Have been twice and loved both the great selection of dishes and the attentive service. Great advice on sake selections as well. Decor is a little 80's for my liking but can get over it.... read more

Food is good, they have some traditional japanese dishes other then the usual sushi/maki/sashimi. The Lunch specials is a good value choice. Other dishes are very good (loved the tempura) but portions are tiny for the price. Service was good and discreet. Place is nice, maybe a little bit noisy. Overall is good but keep this place for special moment or be prepared to pay the price. read more

I had the sirloin steak lunch special. Very mediocre steak quality, vegetables on the plate were not fresh tasting. Maybe they were meant to be decor? But when I see broccoli--even just 2 pieces--I assume it is meant to be eaten. Eh miso. Decent salad--some nice greens, not just iceburg. Pineapple in fruit plate tasted odd. Maybe this is more of a sushi place? I am unlikely to go back. read more

Expensive, expensive, expensive. Had to go here because Oishii was closed for the Holiday. Selection stinks, quality okay, prices ridiculous. Go to Fin's if Oishii is closed, further but worth the drive since it costs half the price. read more

Daikanyama is our favorite Japanese restaurant in the Boston area, our favorite restaurant, period. The food is exquisite and beautifully prepared. The service is warm and professional. I think that it is hard to move into a neighborhood that has Oiyshi Sushi on the next block. I liked the look of the restaurant. You can actually eat at this restaurant. I thought the service was very good. The maki roll was delicious, thought there was little to no wasabi. I also liked the fact that the edamame was brought to the table immediately. The tempura was over-battered. It was hard to find the shrimp and the vegetables under the tasteless batter. I was not convinced that the shrimp were fresh. The salad was very small and the lettuce was on the edge of being spoiled. There was very little dressing. The Miso was boring. I will give the place a second try, but not for a while. read more

The presentation of the food was good - that's about it! The food was "average" and most importantly the management was rude and unaccomodating. I would definitely recommend giving the place a miss! read more

Great food...but, a friend and I went on a Tuesday night to enjoy and catch up. For two of us we ordered a good deal of food and drinks, neither a small Bill not a small tip. It was the end of the night and there were only two other parties in the restaurant. Our server came and took the final check while we were still finishing our drinks. Then, she hovered over us until we really felt we had no choice but to leave. Sad because I really liked the food but I found this server's eagerness to get us off the table (noobe waiting) set a bad tone for the entire night. Very bad experience, doubt I would go back. I don't understand why someone else couldn't have cleared the two glasses from our table if she was so eager to leave. We were certainly not the only ones left in the place. Pretty bad experience unfortunately. read more

The food is okay but the waiters are not friendly and they are not interactive. The service is terrible and the waiters get your order wrong. The soy sauce bottle runs out very quick. Some people just stand like guards and they stare at you. I would not go there. read more

The best Japanese around. The wait staff is very mediocre and the prices are high but the food is worth it.
