I assembled a group here last weekend for brunch on my birthday and was disappointed. It was highly recommended online, so I was confidently excited. The Jerusalem bagel & cured salmon breakfast dish was farcically bad, like the deconstructed beginnings of an open-faced sandwich with no right way to be put together, and many times more bread than necessary (plus, the salmon was clumped together unappetizingly). The food here is delicious. Light and beautifully seasoned. The chicken schnitzel was a thinly cut breast with a light coating of delicately seasoned breading. The gazpacho was a refreshing combination of herbs with the sweet touch of dates and a horseradish kick. The dessert called Silan is a delicious invention of the chef. Shaved halvah over gelato. Single worst restaurant experience I've ever had. We sat at the counter that overlooks the kitchen and we waited nearly 30 minutes before anyone came over to serve us. When we flagged down someone they were nice enough to take our order. However they missed multiple items and gave me the incorrect drink. The food then took about 45 minutes and was mediocre at best. The Caesar salad was overdressed and the mezze came after our main course and the charred eggplant was not charred but instead quite raw. To top it all off we waited another 20 minutes before being able to pay as no one would stop even when we tried politely to flag them. The icing on the cake was when my friend noticed that the wax from a suspended candle had dripped onto his fork and he had eaten a piece. Absolutely gutted at how bad this place was because it's been getting a lot of press hype but I would absolutely not recommend this place. They have pretensions of being a great restaurant but I can't imagine they ever will be. The service and the food are both quite poor. read more

Even We were having an important conversation at that time and the waitress and the servers kept asking what we needed, and the woman who looked like a manager, without even looking at half a bottle of leftover beer she just took it. So we had to tell her to give it back. More importantly, I was even more shocked to find out that it was $35 to have a few vegetables on a plate with two tasteless small minced meat skewers. My conclusion was that I tried this place because Yelp reviews were good, but in my opinion they couldn't get such good reviews unless they bought a star from the Yelp company. Somehow this place's doesn't have any warmth feeling. Peoples who works there and the environment and even food were TOXIC. It was the worst restaurant I've been to in recent years. Went there on 7/11/21 for a belated birthday. So we opted for outside dining (i believe inside dining option was open). Outside dining area is spacious! We ordered Muhammara and Kubaneh as starters (we wanted bread and it only came with the Labneh so!!!). Muhammara was good, I had preferred if the bread was cut (may be thats not how its served) Main course were Branzino and Lamb. Branzino came with a grilled pineapple piece, tomatoes and a nice yellow sauce (was aromatic and tasty without being too creamy). I felt the 2 piece branzino was dry- being a tasty fish that it is, didnt feel that it had the punch (seemed fresh though). The lamb came with dill/cilantro garnish, had some puree/curry base. Overall the food was good the server were attentive but i felt were not fully familiar with the serving (so guessing on our part was on the card) I will go back again one day to try out the other items one the menu! read more

Horrible experience. Went for brunch. Sat quickly, but then waited over an hour for our food. No acknowledgement, apology, or even a comp on the coffee (which, by the way, my husband had an empty cup for over 30 minutes with no one coming by to check/refresh). It honestly felt like this place takes pride in its subpar service because our waiter clearly didn't give af, and almost seemed to enjoy it. Onto the food. It was subpar, perhaps the most I would say is, it was fine. The shakshuka was ok, but the flatbread was super disappointing. And at $21 for a dish that consists of just eggs and tomatoes, it was outrageously overpriced, especially considering the portion size. The lavash bagel with lox is an absolute joke. The "zatar cream cheese" is laughably a block of cream cheese thrown on top of a messy plate with an 1/8 of a teaspoon of zatar sprinkled on top. And, the portion of salmon was embarrassing. That's the best word for it - they should be embarrassed to serve this dish. In sum, the value: we had one coffee, one mimosa, one small egg dish, and one bagel dish, and our bill came to over $70. I want that $70 back and more importantly, those two hours of my life on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon. read more

And what a visit it was, its everything and more. We were 5 of us and filled the table with appetizers or mezze, and bread -- labneh, sassy chicken liver mousse, and Moroccan carrots. Kubaneh (Yemenite bread)baked with za'atar, and the Jerusalem bagel that absolutely took me back to old Jerusalem. Than Added the flash fried cauliflower, the yellowfin tuna crudo in a beautiful glass dish and the most velvety hummus that comes with 1/2 soft boiled egg and harissa to created the ultimate combination. We shared 4 entrees: whole charcoal grilled Branzino, soft and jentle to the palate. The Harissa BBQ Chicken moist and tender. Not sure what the other reviewers were talking about ... service could not have been more attentive and cordial. Kudos and accolades to the wait staff!!! I met my daughter for lunch we ate outside. It was a beautiful fall afternoon but the outside tables all have individual heat lamps... it was perfect. We started with the fried cauliflower... it was wonderful. We had 3 dips, mezze, with the Israeli flat bread...whipped eggplant, marinated beets and the spicy roasted pepper... they were all wonderful. We shared the fattoush with salmon salad. It was one of the best lunches I think I've ever had... absolutely wonderful!!!! Will certainly return often. read more

As an Israeli , I really wanted to try this new place in upper west side. Sadly, I am disappointed to say that Dagon Is Very expensive for what you get. (Also considering the location is far up on Broadway) $15 for 1 Lamb cigar served on a giant plate made no sense to us. (The GM was nice to remove platting to make more space on the table) The food was good, no doubt. however, very miss priced and the service was terrible. Our waitress wasn't friendly and had a strange attitude. Felt very unprofessional and weird vibe. After having basically bread and a cigar, We had to go somewhere else for dinner. Despite hearing many rave reviews from friends and online, everything about this place was "meh". First, the service. Nobody came to our table for about 10minutes. When someone finally came, another person came soon after, suggesting some confusion about which servers were responsible for our table. When I asked our server for input on dishes, he didn't provide any suggestions at all. When I asked about how much to order, his response was that "people who are hungry order a lot, people who aren't too hungry order a little, and people in the middle order somewhere in the middle". You coulda left this up! When the food came, everything was "ok" at best, but nothing was good. And our serve never asked why we weren't eating our food nor why my partner didn't drink any of her drink (which was bad too). This might have been ok at a lower price point, but at this price point and given the rave reviews, I expected more than diner food. I'd recommend going somewhere else. I came to Dagon for dinner on a Friday night with a friend. We had no reservations but were able to be seated at a high top table right away at around 6:45pm. The ambiance was very lively and trendy and the restaurant got really busy later so I would recommend making a reservation if you are able. Our waiter was very attentive and would constantly check in to make sure we were okay which I appreciated. For drinks we ordered the RIMONegroni and the mediterranean margarita. The mediterranean margarita was basically a regular margarita but the rim had Za'atar (I was skeptical of this at first but it was a very good drink.) My friend said his drink was good too although before he stirred it he said it tasted a bit like cough syrup. For food we split a mezze trio of labneh, whipped eggplant, and marinated beets all which were amazing-- special shoutout to the marinated beets which had crispy chickpeas as well as pieces of beef tongue, giving it a very unique flavor and texture profile. The bread that came with the mezze was also wonderful! We split the tunisian cigar which was very tasty, having a good combination of flavors with the lamb, tahini, amba, and crispy fried exterior. For the main entree we got the whole roasted black bass which was not as mind-blowing as I was hoping but still good overall. For dessert we shared the labneh cheesecake which was probably one of the best slices of cheesecake I have had! It was very rich but not overly sweet and had a drizzle of caramel sauce on top which complemented the pecan crust and ice cream extremely well. get the mezze (6 for $36) and honestly you don't need the chicken liver one and that's as someone who really likes chicken liver but this mezze was too oddly sweet. comes with a nice hunk of bread. honestly if you just ate the mezze that would literally be enough (we got another bread and while eating the 6 mezzes basically got full). then got the shakshuka, zucchini frittata, and omelette. everything tasted good, omelette was pretty standard tho. with coffee + tax + tip the meal split 3 ways was about 45 bucks a person. not bad, not the best israeli food I've had, but nice decor and a good place to just hang out. i'd prob enjoy more if we just omitted the entrees and went ham on the mezzes though LOL. read more

Having lived in Israel, am very familiar with the cuisine. One thing I enjoyed about this restaurant was its interesting take on traditional foods. it was exciting and new, but still reminiscent of some of my favourite meals. The Sabich flatbread is worth mentioning.... similar to the traditional sandwich, it had eggplant, greens, eggs, and tahini, but it was constructed like a pizza style flatbread. our waiter, Spencer, recommended the Fattoush, which had a buttermilk vinaigrette that was especially delicious. Popular, loud music. Full of people with pent up energy and money coming out of a pandemic. Unfortunately, several of the dishes we tried fell short of expectations. The lamb was a generous portion but bland. So bland I didn't want to bring the leftovers home. The marinated beets and hummus were good. Everything else was forgettable. The staff was overwhelmed and I'm glad to see a new restaurant is thriving in this environment, but I did not enjoy filling my own water glass after trying unsuccessfully for 5 mins trying to flag down someone to do it or the long wait to pay. read more

This updated Israeli-owned establishment feels like a trendy TLV restaurant and is a great addition to this part of the UWS which mostly has "sleepier" spots. The loud (but not excessively loud) Israeli music, Israeli-influenced and elaborate decor and lively atmosphere give an Israeli authentic feel. Shoutout to the owners for the most comfortable bar stools I've ever sat on which definitely enhanced the experience. Went for dinner and ordered a few mezzes and small dishes: Muhamarra, Flash Fried Cauliflower, Shishbarak and Sabich. All dishes were ok, not great, with the exception of the Shishbarak which was wonderful. Service was very quick and effective. Bottom line: fun ambience, great service but food could be better, hence the 4 stars. read more

So many great things about this restaurant--truly good food, excellent though small wine list, great UWS location--but just trying making a reservation that works for you. We were a party of five tonight, so I stopped by Dagon's in person to ask that we be seated outdoors, on the edge, but not in the shed, which I dislike because it feels claustrophobic and backs on Broadway, which is noisy. We arrived on schedule at 5 (early!) and the hostess seated us in the shed, saying that's what we asked for, which wasn't true. She said we couldn't have our preferred seating because the restaurant was completely booked. OK but when we left at 7 our preferred table was still open as were a dozen other tables. But go for the food--especially the mezze, which are superb--and go early before it gets noisy. And our waiter was very gracious and professional, so that helped immensely. read more

We were attending for a birthday brunch, and very much enjoyed the food. However, our server forgot to put in one of our drinks, never brought out extra coffee when asked, not hot sauce when asked. Also, I have a pistachio and cashew allergy and when I asked a staff member if there were either nut they said no. Luckily I saw that the halava dessert did have visible pistachios in it and alerted another server because ours was no where to be found. Went to Dagon on a double date last night - fantastic! Lively, beautiful tiled space, upscale casual vibe. Friendly attentive service. And the food - oh yes! Everything was delicious but the standouts were the silky Sasso chicken liver mousse, the spicy feta mezze, and the lavash bagel (which arrived freshly baked & steaming hot out of the oven) served with zatar olive oil. Do not miss the shishbarak dumplings - they are a gorgeous marriage of Middle East meets Eastern Europe. Salads were light and refreshing and a perfect compliment to the harissa chicken. Only complaint - the mezze portions were small. The tables are a little close to each other and the sound level was a bit high when the restaurant was full by the end of our meal but that won't keep me from returning. This place is INCREDIBLE!!!! We had the hummus with flat bread, Jerusalem bagel, eggplant dip, and poached egg khachapuri from the brunch menu. The bagel was so soft and warm, the eggplant dip was amazing, and the hummus -- I can talk about this FOREVER. First of all, the flat bread exceeded our expectations. We were expecting pita, but instead got this warm, soft, garlicky bread that melted in our mouths. The hummus also had a red pepper sauce and fresh dill, which made it so delicious. I wish we got so many more flat breads on the side, that's how good it was!! We wiped clean the plate :) The khachapuri also wasn't as expected -- we thought we'd get the cheesy dish that but instead got more of a flat bread (truly flat this time) with poached eggs on top, Eggs Benedict style. It was great and super light (what we needed after going off on the flat bread and hummus and bagel) but not what we thought we were going to get so keep that in mind if you order it too!! This place is wicked. I've been here 3 times and have had a great experience each time. I've sat in different areas each time and by now I've eaten basically everything on the menu. The staff is fun and do their jobs well, the vibe is great it's nice and trendy for sure. The open kitchen layout is beautiful and the work they did on what used to be big daddy's is insane, I always said they should knock down that wall. The food is outrageous. I'm a chef myself and I thoroughly enjoy everything they serve, I live a few blocks away so I'll definitely be back very soon read more
