I've been working on a review for Daddy Jones for months now. I'm having a hard time putting into words how much I love this place. Daddy Jones, let me count the ways that I love you. Or how about my top 6 to keep it short and sweet. One. You are within walking distance of my house. Two. I love a good bar with a dark lit atmosphere, and you deliver every time. I get sucked into whatever TV show you have on, and even more so to the music you play. Three. At least once a month we try to make it a point to go here with a couple of friends for dinner. Or sometimes just my girlfriend and I. We like to sit somewhere out of the way, order a bunch of food, drink a whole bunch, and generally just have a good night without feeling rushed. Yeah, we're those people that will be there until closing even if we arrived at 7. And we've never felt unwelcome for it. Four. Dimitra remembers our drink order, every single time. One of our friends is particularly picky about his drinks. He likes them so sweet they melt your teeth out but boozy without the booze taste. They are always up for the challenge and come up with cocktails that he either loves, or hates. But they keep trying and are great sports about it. Five. The food is fantastic. I usually stick to the same few things every time I'm there but I've never been disappointed. The menu changes slightly each season, and they're starting to have specials during certain nights of the week which make it even harder not to go constantly. Six. For my girlfriends birthday this past year all she wanted was to have a cocktail from Daddy Jones. I emailed Dimitra and on the sly planned a surprise birthday party for her. They were so accommodating and even let us bring a few sweet treats for her. I ordered appetizers ahead of time, and everyone was able to order a bigger meal if they chose. They took care of making sure everyone had the right checks and it was the least stressful birthday I've ever planned. I'm still so happy how this turned out I could keep going on, but I'm hoping that's enough to show my undying love of this place without seeming like I'm that creep you never invite to the party. read more

We'd heard about this place for a while and decided to give them a few weeks to sort out the kinks. I typically don't like going to a restaurant right after it opens but this place was pretty damn good. We showed up around 8 on a Friday night and found two seats at the bar. By the way, there's plenty of parking at the CVS across the street if you don't live within walking distance. We'd never been there when it was Lil Vinny's so we were a little surprised at how small it was but it seemed laid out pretty well. The bar isn't huge but the decor was interesting and the drinks were pretty damn good. She got a Blue Hawaiian that the bartender told us was made with blue Jolly Ranchers. I thought that was pretty cool and the drink was pretty tasty. I enjoy how they had Pretty Things Jack D'or on draft. Way to keep it local. The bartender was super nice and always on top of his game. When he noticed the kitchen forgot our appetizers, he apologized and then they were in front of us within 2 minutes. Good enough for me. Apps were pretty good. We went with the olives and zucchini. Zucchini app was huge and really tasty. For entree's we went with the lamb skewer and mac'n cheese. To be honest, we weren't all that hungry after a couple drinks and apps but they were good stuff. Only critique of the mac n cheese would be a little bread crumb on top. Bacon and tomato was good but a little crunch never hurts when it comes to mac n cheese. Overall, we'll be back because we live close by. But even if we weren't we'd add it to the rotation. It's unique and a fun time. read more

A cool, rectangular space using old gym lockers mounted on the wall as shelving. Large glass windows allow you to look into Medford street and are punctuated with high top tables across from the long bar. Odd choices for tv programs - ESPN, '80's murder mystery, couldn't see the other screen. Nothing on the menu is over $20. Drinks are poured thick and heavy. Well mixed and cold. Chicken tszouvlaki ($10) served in a pita with tzatziki well seasoned with dill or over a salad. Either plate comes with french fries. The salad version is in a bowl dressed with olive oil and vinegar. Smoked herring ($10) over grilled romaine is a large plate with grilled bread and a light oil dressing. Deep fried zucchini ($10) is a large serving of vegetables breaded thickly, fried hard, and served with a bean and garlic dip. Service is slow and servers watch as plates sit on tables for long periods of time. Other than this minor glitch, good food, friendly service. read more

I love Daddy Jones. They have great cocktails and brunch. The cocktails are pricey ($10) but are high quality and certainly worth it. The brunch menu has standard brunch fare and some savory Greek options. I've been there twice for brunch and never had to wait for a table. The brunch menu is reasonably priced at about $8 a plate. The food took a while to come out both times, but the service was great. Honestly I didn't mind waiting since I was enjoying fresh squeezed orange juice, good company, and the comfortable yet classy atmosphere. Daddy Jones seems like a nice family run business serving high quality food and drinks. I highly recommend this place! read more

This place was pretty awesome. They were still putting their gears together when the Biff and I visited, but honestly, a unique and genuinely good place to hit up in Magoun Square and Somerville in general. The serve elevated Greek tavern cuisine that was sincerely delicious. We split a lamb kabob and pita platter. The tzatziki was to die for and their feta'd red bell pepper mix was not far behind. The bartender over alch'd the mixed drinks. Over alch'd should be a term if it already isn't. However, it was a fair effort and I could tell the drinks would have been tasty and inventive if her hand hadn't slipped. We've been telling everyone we know in the area about this place. I've been here exactly twice, both times to grab a drink - sadly, never to eat - but I can attest that the wine selection is good (and not crazy expensive), and the beers aren't shabby either. Vibe is enjoyably cozy - hipstery-ish, I guess - it has the requisite amnt of exposed brick and bartenders w/ tats - on the weekends it gets loud enough that you have to speak quite loudly to be heard - but on the weekdays it's a dream. Haven't had a problem getting a table either time - though it's tiny, so I'm sure that it can get cray if the time is right. I'd take a friend/date/lover/rando you met on the T here - probably not my grandmother. read more

Wasn't too pleased with my meal here, it's summer so I wanted a Greek salad. What they serve as their Greek salad is closer to cucumber salad, no greens aside from the cucumbers (75% of the salad) and they were out of olives and capers when I ordered it (didn't tell me this til it was served and I asked about the missing olives, also how does a "Greek" place run out of olives?). A better place would have offered me something else or comped me the salad rather than charging full price for an incomplete meal they didn't forewarn me of. Inside is super dark (guess they thought I would confuse the extra tomatoes for olives? Yes I am still on about this!), drinks are good, patio is nice but you can only drink out there no food. Not a fan of how they play old tv shows off Netflix as I find it distracting. read more

I was instantly sold on Daddy Jones once I read a review via Urban Daddy that 80s tv shows were played here on loop. The nostalgia for such delights as The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and the Cosby Show, as well as the menu, lured me all the way from Brighton to the boondocks of Maguan Sq in Somerville. Upon finding this mysterious Square in the bowels of Somerville I was intrigued by Daddy Jones, but slightly put off by the obnoxious hipsters that refused to move out of the door way despite my repeated "excuse mes." After a shove or two thrown their way I made it to the host and was told it was a 30-60 minute wait. They took my number and told me they'd call me when the table was ready. I headed across the street for a drink. Thank goodness I decided to eat there because the Daddy Jones' assholes NEVER CALLED ME BACK! No wonder this place is in the middle of nowhere Somerville rather than Downtown or Backbay. Good luck to ya, Daddy Jones. You definitely need it. read more

This place is right across the street from my new apartment in Magoun Square in Somerville. In the month that I have been in the area, I walked past this place a few times and couldn't tell if it was dive, a towney bar or what, so since I was alone on Easter and every other place was closed, I decided to check it out. What I found when I went inside pleasently surprised me. First off, this place is kind of funky...and I mean that in a good way. The decor is a mix of 80's and 90's, fancy lights on the tables and these really expensive looking glasses you get when you order a drink. I really can't describe it actually...just go on in and check it out yourself! One cool thing is that they have various 80's shows playing on a few of the TV's....so far I have seen The Cosby Show and McGuyver playing, as well as 80's and 90's music, which I happen to love. Last time I was in, I suggested they start playing re-runs of Cheers, so we'll see...haha. They also have sports on too, this being Boston and all. I'm a big whiskey drinker, so I ordered the drink called the Bourbon Spoon. It's bourbon with vermouth and a spoonful of this Greek (oh yeah, this place has a greek style drink and food menu, being that the owner is greek) candy at the bottom that soaks up all the bourbon. Again, kinda funky and hard to describe, so just stop in and try it yourself. Nevertheless, it was excellent. I have also had a few manhattans here as well, and they are also excellent with pretty good pours. The only thing I have ever eaten here is the marinated olives w/ grilled bread app, and that was very good. I have seen some of the food other people were eating, and I will definitely be trying more of the food selections. Probably the best thing about this place is the vibe. It's not snooty, the owner Dimitra seems very friendly, and the bartender Stephanie is equally as friendly and pretty chatty. The only thing that stops this place from getting a 5-star rating is that their draft beer selection is a little lacking IMO, but I get the feeling that's not really what they are going for in this bar. We loved the patio atmosphere, and service was fairly good all things considered. My friends liked their drinks. Food was so disappointing though. Undercooked and doughy pita, under seasoned gyro filling. Dry and flavorless. Also, every single gyro set was incorrect in one way or another when they came to the table. The cocktail list here is really fun; most recently, I had the pleasure to imbibe a glass full of dill infused gin (which came with a skewer of good crunchies on top). Go for the cocktails; Stay for the souvlaki! Though their emphasis is clearly on original cocktails and beer, this new spot's Mediterranean-tinged food options do not disappoint. The key is in the spices.. And not over- or under-doing it with them. The skordalia dip is a garlic-lover's dream! We had it with the fried zucchini app, and the blend of garlic and spices in the zucchini and dip were very well-balanced. Though the zucchini was a little greasy. Also, the tzatziki was terrific, too. We tried the steak frites, which was well prepared, and the feta fries were a flavorful twist on the classic. And also the chicken souvlaki wrap, which was tasty, but odd to have fries actually folded into it. Sometimes twists on classic dishes are better in theory. All the same, the flavors are key here, and we were delightfully surprised at the quality and flavor of the meal. The cocktails were really enjoyable too, though they could use a few more wine options (they only offer one of each color grape on their menu). They don't need to hire a sommelier, but they should know that not everyone is up for beer or cocktails when they go out. All in all, I'd recommend this place for a little change of pace in the area. Also, the music was refreshing.. Not too loud, and just alternative enough. Florence & The Machine meets Death Cab For Cutie. Some thought went into it, but they weren't trying too hard to impress. I want to love Daddy Jones, as it's within easy walking distance of my house, but I just can't bring myself to find it more than average. To it's credit, it's really well decorated and has a great atmosphere, and the staff is nice and attentive. They have quality cocktails and I could just stop the review here and say this a great place to drop in to for a quick cocktail. However, their beer list really falls flat. In this day and age if you're going to hype yourself as a bar you need to be able to select beers - their winter draft selection is full of summer beers and their summer selection is full of winter beers. I just don't get it. Their wine can also be hit or miss. I've only eaten there once, and the food was just OK - but that was a while ago and it's possible they improved it since then. read more

Had a groupon/gilt/something or other for this place and had a reservation set so there was no possibility of getting stuck on a Friday night. Had never been here before. Upon entering, it's a small place, but they weren't too too busy, so it was solid. The table seating in one part is on par with what you'd find at a Cheesecake factory, where your table is super close to someone else. I'm sure if you dislike that you can request different seating upon a reservation. For starters, we ordered drinks. 2 beers that were on tap (sorry don't remember names) but they came quickly and we enjoyed them. We then put in for the cheese plate and a smoked herring side. Again, both came fairly quickly and were definitely something different, but I enjoyed them both. We each put in for the steak frites dinner.Lot of fries covered in feta, an arugula salad, and 2 decent sized tips. Still filling and the steak tips were not fatty at all, and were delicious. Salad was a somewhat bitter, however, I didn't mind that. Plenty of fries (I couldn't finish them all) We then got a dessert that was complimentary with the coupon and it was solid as well. Some sort of pastry you could dip into a small bowl of marshmallow (I'm thinking it was fluff). Waiter was great, fun and talkative. The server/busboy was awkward and silent, but I don't care about that stuff. I don't know if I'd pay the prices I saw for the food considering the place has a heavier emphasis on solid drinks (mostly gin). The food IS good, but for the prices I'd probably stick to somewhere else. With a groupon/etc, it's definitely worth it to try. If you love it, keep going. I just ordered delivery through Mixmenu for this restaurant, and I was VERY pleasantly surprised. First off, there was a handwritten note thanking me for my order, and informing me that they'd included a free Greek salad. The second impression is that they're using Chinese food takeout boxes, which is soooo smart because they are the best. I got the spanikopita with bacon marmalade, and they were delicious. I've never had a bacon marmalade before, but it was vinegary and flavorful, and really added something to the spinach pies. You can really taste oregano, lemon, and olive oil and that's always what you want with good Greek food. The Greek salad was actually really good, a kind of marinated mix of grape tomatoes, red onions, cucumber, olives, and some other good stuff. The included pita triangles were warm and delicious, and the feta was very good. It's a smart move, giving this as a freebie, because it makes a great impression on every level. The Mac Daddy (mac and cheese with bacon and tomato) is just... amazing. The mix of feta and other cheese adds a kind of depth that really works with the tomato, and the bacon is just... these guys know bacon. It's actually a topping of crispy bacon chunks, so the bacon is crisp and fresh with every bite. Yum. YUM. The mixed green side-salad was a nice follow-up as well, and very fresh. My friend had the chicken Souvlas, and I had a taste... VERY good, and right on the money for authenticity. It's not a gyro, it's more in common with shawarma, but with the Greek spices. Delicious! Just moved to the neighborhood and wandered down here with a friend after spending the day unpacking. Their dinner menu is short and sweet, but man, ALL of the food was absolutely delicious!!! We ordered the fried zucchini as a starter-- amazing. The sauce that came with it was absolutely delicious! The burgers were cooked to order and some of the best I've had in the area. Bar has a neighborhood feel, large enough to hang out, but intimate enough to not be overwhelming. Not what I expected... yes, I expected a Greek menu, but the layout decor and random schmattering of other things was not expected, and quite confusing. Sad not to experience the outdoor patio but I bet that brings much more positive feedback. Nope, I went on a cold night and was forced to sit inside... the space was a bit too cold and the food was really just not good. Overpriced moussaka was singed at the edges and presence of eggplant was negligible. I enjoyed the potato base, but at $14, the thing came alone; I had to ask for salad (provided e gratis, anyway). Friends' gyro (jee-ro??) was also blackened (not in a good way); and the salad just was bleh. The shining star of the night was the sweet potato fries with honey and feta. Daddy Jones is a nice addition to the neighborhood as someplace that you can grab a bite or a glass of wine. I've been now once on a week night for dinner and once on opening weekend for a drink. On the weekend it was evident that the layout of this long narrow place was a bit lacking. No good standing room if you couldn't snag a seat at the bar or table. Also in the space that used to be the entrance to Lil Vinny's but is now a strange 2-person bar is not well designed or used. I didn't understand why they chose to lay it out that way because its a huge waste of space. On the weekday it was much better because it wasn't as crowded. You could chill at the bar or at a table, watching the Cosby show. They have a very limited menu. The food is definitely an after thought here. And while its nice to have a place that doesn't give you giant portions of greasy bar food - I wouldn't say the food is anything special. read more

"Brunching Around Town" While I love Daddy Jones this was my first foray their for BRUNCH. What I an tell you for sure...is that it won't be my last Brunch Excursion there! Outstanding French Toast! Thick cuts of French Toast were decadent......custardy deliciousness.....almost like Bread Pudding for breakfast! Of course I had to sample more than that. On this visit, we opted for the steak tips....tender, cooked to perfection and the flavor, from a marinade I guess, was tasty! Daddy Jones offers an array of meats on a stick....a must try for my next visit, along with the ultimate Zucchini Fries! It's hard to visit Daddy Jones without ordering the Zucchini Fries for me! The following is what could be considered negative, but includes rebuttals justifying above rating: [1] I like my Greek Street food a little less pricey and street-y, but this place is less street than traditional, and the taste is worth the price. [2] It has been closed before. But this is either because [a] I didn't check the weekend hours and since I'm a flâneur and in Magoun Square walk elsewhere or [b] because of a private party but since this was a return visit, place is clearly wanted and desired. And why is it good? Well the hipness is not off-putting at all i.e. great music with either Miami Vice or Saved by the Bell on mute on the TV, what appears to be a gym locker or something or other to store the bar non-perishables, a great name written in solid, classic font, and frugal 'Thank You cards' in which your bill comes. But the point is all of this is not not overbearing: Daddy Jones is small, pliable. It becomes what the crowd is. The World Cup bar for Götze's goal, or the rider rendezvous for the end of a 5 Miler, or the post-Book-Club-bitching-and-saucing haunt. I'll say a possible [3] could be olive pits, but that is obviously for more Mediterranean Cusine-centric forum at which I would probably be yelled at. read more

I moved to Magoun Square just about a year ago, and Daddy Jones opened up not too long ago but I already know this is just what Magoun needed. It's otherwise a place full of sports/dive bars. The beer selection is great and the prices are reasonable ($6 IPA, okay!). The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. I enjoy the vintage decor and definitely, the Cosby show will suck you right in! If you're there on the hour you can experience the beauty and nostalgia of the working cuckoo clock, too :) read more

Great casual Greek food and burgers too! Fresh and good quality. The kitchen is super clean as you can see it walking to the patio. Service is great, very helpful and welcoming. Great vibe/ambiance from the music to the movies playing to the plate ware and glassware. Fun Greek wines and plenty of beer and spirit offerings. Don't shirt change this place for "just a good summer patio"...make it your favorite neighborhood spot or a place to catch up with friends. We will be back. read more

This is my second time for brunch, first time was on Mother's day. So I stop by this Sunday and brought my husband. The Bloody Mary was amazing. Cherry Mimosa was to die for had two very unique drink. Coffee was just the right thickness for a good morning brunch, Good service and the waiter was friendly and accommodating. Sit outside in the beautiful new patio!!! Strong cocktails - I actually didn't need a second one! Delicious apps - the fried cheese triangles were my favorite. The fried zucchini with the garlic-potato-mash was tasty and different (and I burped garlic the rest of the night, which I'm happy with!). The sweet potato fries with honey and cheese were a bit too sweet for me, and I kind of wanted to dip them because the other apps were dips...but they were still very tasty. I used to love this place... but can somebody explain to me why they changed the format of the patio. I really did not like having to drink my cocktail or draft beer in a plastic cup. Also, the food portions have gotten smaller...I loved the lamb pita. I always remember feeling full after ordering. The last two times it has been really small. I think their stuffed eggplant might be my new favorite thing. Daddy Jones is quite a hike from my Inman apt, but it was a very nice day, so we thought we'd take a leisurely walk up to DJ for some food and bevs. We weren't super hungry so we split the stuffed eggplant (WOW) and lamb skewers (also delicious). It was a tough call because everything on the menu sounded awesome. Their offerings are different than the typical items you see at similar cocktail lounge-type restaurants. We'll definitely be back to try other things on the menu. The cocktail with grapefruit juice and gin was very refreshing. Prices are also fair for the quality. Check it out! read more

This place was fantastic! A friend and I went for dinner and drinks last night, and we can't wait to go back. We were a bit hesitant about going, since the most recent reviews mentioned slow /poor service. We decided to take our chances because the patio looked really nice, and we were delighted to find the opposite. Our waiter was very attentive, and our food came out extremely quickly...and was delicious! The dip and pita with cucumbers was outstanding, and the greek salad was excellent. Cute little place. I enjoyed the meze platter with beer. I have not seen anything in Boston like it. Real cozy and enjoyable. If you are in the area, you have to stop by. The chicken dinner entree was really tasty. The chicken was marinaded to perfection and may have been the best chicken I have ever had in my life. Came in last weekend on Saturday evening with my fiancée. Our server was awesome! He was pleasant and always made sure we had our alcoholic drinks as well as water. We ordered chicken skewers, and spicy pork skewers to start. They were delicious. We also got a burger as well as the Mac daddy ( mac and cheese). The Mac daddy was so delicious, the macaroni was cheesy and saucy. I keep bringing this up to my fiancée how pleased I was . We spent around 80$ for all the food mentioned and 3 drinks. Atmosphere was good as well, there were TVs playing basketball games, and not many people in the restaurant as well. Only thing is parking is hard to come by in this are and if you find it it'll likely be paid, however it was SO worth it. read more

I have to be cautious when I review this place. This is because there was no crowd on a hot summer night. The host was pleasant and the waiter was nice. The service was quick. That being said, it was also not busy- so take that into consideration. We sat in the patio. It was nice but we saw a rat. It is not a very diverse crowd here. As per the food, the margarita was good. The pita and the dip was amazing. We got a souvla dish with chicken and vegetables. The chicken was excellent. The prices were reasonable, and not too expensive. So from the food perspective, I'd recommend this place. read more

Came in for Sunday brunch at 11 and the restaurant had just opened, it was pretty empty the whole time we were there. I got the BLT with egg and sweet potato fries and my boyfriend got the pork bowl. Both dishes were delicious! They also serve free Turkish coffee so our total bill was only $25. Will definitely come back! read more

I've been to Daddy Jones maybe half a dozen times and I'm never disappointed. What's surprising is that every time I look at the menu I'm always thrown for a loop because the name of the place has nothing to do with the [mostly] Greek food they serve! Maybe Daddy Jonekus or Daddy Jonelopelous, but just Daddy Jones evokes more of a diner-food menu. The female bartender with the black hair is outstanding. She can make things on suggestion of ingredients or you can order from their fun cocktail menu. The food generally high quality but I would skip the $18 mezze plate: the eggplant is sugary sweet, the vegetables are blah and for $18 you don't really get your money's worth. Everything else, which I've either ordered or tasted, has been great! The service is a mixed bag. They're not rude at all, but they're not really friendly either. Responses are generally flat and matter-of-fact and some of the staff who bring out the food can be rough around the edges (no smiles, no response to thank you... just doin' their job). Actually I don't think I've ever seen the bartender smile either. Aw well, as long as she makes good drinks! This place is always a safe bet! read more

I really wanted to give 3.5 stars but since the food was so good I rounded up instead of down. Went here for dinner last night. We were told me a server inside to go around the corner and to the right to find the outdoor patio. The patio is adorable and a great spot for dinner on a warm night. There was nobody to greet us out there so we just sat anywhere and waited....and waited. Took quite a while to get someone to just bring us water. Our server was friendly but just wasn't on the ball. Forgot to bring the appetizer. Never came back to see if we wanted another round of drinks. Didn't ask if we wanted dessert. None of these things are terrible though. I got the fried haddock. My husband got the hanger steak. Both meals were delicious. Full of flavor and very reasonably priced. The haddock had tons of grilled veggies underneath two big pieces of fish. The spanakopita app was good but only two pieces. The patio punch cocktail was awesome. So we really loved the food but the service is lacking. We will be back though read more

This place is good! Pro: Atmosphere, Greek food, great outdoor patio, creative brunch although I wish they opened an hour earlier, I like how they leave the water jug on the table. Con: Prices are a bit high for what you get. No espresso/latte for breakfast. Lamb was a bit fatty last time I was here. read more
