I see that my orriginal review is no longer up here but i think all who are interested should know; they tell you one price on the phone and then after you get your hair done the price is inflated. i was quoted $45 on the phone for a simple wash and blow dry (not a blow out), just clean, clear and dry my hair. the person that did my hair complained about her other customers half the time she was doing my hair and when she was done, they charged me $75 and my hair was tangled and still wet in the back and crown area. Sigh...I wanted to write a great review b/c the stylists are sooo friendly, but when I got home, I discovered issues that should've been resolved immediately. First, I called the number associated with the Diamond Springs address and made my appointment. When I arrived to the VB location, I was informed that I was at the wrong place. Apparently all calls go to one number for the different locations and no one felt the need to inform me that my appointment was in Chesapeake. I hope that they confirm the location with future clients. 2nd, I received a call about an hour before my appointment from the stylist asking me to come in an hour later. It was great that I received the call rather than letting me arrive and having to wait for an hour, but I had evening plans. I had to push back a dinner reservation. 3rd - 100th...when I left the salon, I felt like Erykah Badu. I had a BIG beautiful curly afro via crochet braids. I loved it. I did feel it might be too big and the stylist said I could come back the next day if I wanted and get it trimmed down. When I had the chance to start styling the hair and the volume had come down, I noticed a problem. There were noticeably visible spaces in the hair that showed the cornrows...LARGE gaps that could be seen if you were looking at the top of my head or if the wind blew the back of my hair just a tiny bit (I'm going to try to upload a pic). Since the hair was fluffed up at the salon, the spaces were covered, but they would be clearly visible to the stylist that was working on my head. The issue was not that I did not have enough hair. I had leftover hair. I believe the issue may have been that the stylist was ready to leave for the day. I called first thing the next morning to request to fill in the spaces as well as to shape up the hair (the hair was looking a bit like Cousin It). The stylist advised me that her schedule was full but she could call me near the end of the day to possibly come in after hours or she would come in at 3pm the next day to fix it. Unfortunately none of these choices were acceptable to me. I live in DC (which she was aware of), was in town for my father's birthday, and we had evening plans. I couldn't come the next day b/c I had to go back home. I was quite disappointed that this mistake could not be fixed immediately. This was no mistake caused by the client. Just as I was called to come in an hour later by the stylist, I felt that another client should have received the same call so my hair could be fixed. Needless to say, I spent the next day in DC watching YouTube videos to learn how to add hair to the spaces (it was very easy...which made me madder b/c the stylist, Chi, could have fixed this issue quickly). Again, I LOVED the stylists. So funny, so sweet, so friendly. The music was great. They offered wine for Wine Down Fridays. I had a fantastic time...but all that meant nothing when I had to fill in the spaces myself even though I paid plenty for this style AND I had to ask someone to professionally shape the hair. Coming to Da Notty Roots, I was pleasantly surprised that I was taken immediately once I arrived. Melissa was super friendly and knowledgeable about my locals. She got my interlocking done within 2 hours. If you know anything, you know that's impressive. She doesn't take breaks for phone calls or to eat her lunch or to do other people's hair lol. So I NEVER write reviews, but this place definitely deserved everything I'm about to say because it's all FACTS and truth. 1) I asked how much for a retwist, she tells me 60$ and it would 85$ for retwist and style. Hmmmm pretty pricy but ok whatever. But then it pissed me off cause another stylist told a client 75$ then he goes naw she told me 40$ referring to the owner. That conversation then carried own amongst all the other stylist in front of 3 different clients ... yeah so note 1 : hook ups and discounts only for some clients 2) CASH ONLY really bruh. But you got state of the art cameras all around the shop. 3) Melissa did my hair. Very nice lady . My hair was madddddd GREASY . I'm talkin bout fresh hot comb grease . Grease was all over my clothes, neck, forehead, and ears. My retwist was garbage. I got home and noticed my hair at the top middle of my head was barely touched. She left hair out that could've been retwisted but she FAILED at parting my hair. I'm tired of typing . This place sucks and they overcharge. PERIOD read more

I love this place!!! The vibe is awesome. The staff is just amazing. Their level of knowledge and professionalism was being what I could ever have expected. I started going to this shop recently to maintain my natural hair as I was having some breakage after giving birth. Not only did they style it flawlessly to cover the shorter area, but they treated my hair so that it would get stronger and grow back. I purchased natural products from them to use at home and they worked! I couldn't be more grateful. In my visits to this salon, I've seen the staff work MAGIC. From the barbers transforming haircuts, dying, facials, razor tapers, etc to the stylists doing locs (starting, styling, and maintenance), braids, and natural styles. I'm a people watcher so I notice (literally) everything. I learned so much sitting in this salon that I decided to start locs on my own hair! The owner, Ms Denise, has fostered a close knit family environment in this location. Her daughter, Jasmine, is my stylist. It took me a couple visits to figure out if everyone was blood related or just Jasmine because it appears she treats everyone the same. The pricing is reasonable compared to what other local stylists charge and I have been able to get appointments scheduled on short notice. Of course nothing is perfect so here are the drawbacks I've found... The salon layout is a little odd for people who aren't familiar. The beginning of my first visit was very awkward as there was no receptionist, no place to sign in or anything. It was very early in the morning and everyone was busy. I didn't know if I was to just got sit and wait so maybe someone would come find me or go to the stylists on the other side to say I'm there. Eventually, someone came over to speak to me but seriously, it was odd at first lol. I imagine I'm not the only one who has experienced this. Also, THEY TAKE WALK-IN CLIENTS. For some, that's a plus. For others, not so much! If you walk in on a busy day, expect to wait. Why? Because they're busy! I went one Sunday and as I was getting my hair done, I watched the stylists jump from person to person because on top of a scheduling problem, they had a huge rush of walk-in clients and didn't want to turn them away. DISCLAIMER: I will support a black business before I support any other business. It hurts because we don't have a lot of black owned businesses and we should. But with that being said this place is the exact reason why black businesses are failing as a whole. This place is very inconsiderate of your time,money and service. They dgaf about you as long as you brought cash. They keep you waiting while they're in the back laughing and eating & carrying on. Their overall vibe is rude. The manager needs to reevaluate her staff and CLEAN HOUSE because some of the stylist are lazy and not passionate about the work that they do. I feel like my overall presence and patriotism is not valued like,they could give to f's about you. Now on to my review, I went to the location in Chesapeake to get starter locs and this was a very important part of my life!! I take my crown very seriously and only went here because my mom & aunt use to come here to get theirs maintenance. I loved my hair the only downfall was the amount of orange crap they used (haven't these people ever heard of loc & twist gel?) but anyways my hair still came out nice. The service was ok but mind you only 2 stylist were working at the time and they didn't engage in conversation but anyways, didn't matter to me. Fast forward to 2 months later, I set up an appt. I spoke to the lady who Normally answers the phone and she told me that the stylist Kiara would be working at the Norfolk location. I arrived at the Norfolk location and to my surprise the salon was closed. I waited about 30 mins because they didn't open til 10, and I gave them the benefit of doubt that they were gonna be running a little late. Thank God I finally called them, she told me the wrong location and said kiara's at the va beach location. No biggie even though, she could've told me ahead of time so I wouldn't be wasting my time looking stupid. Anyways I arrived and when I told the manager who & what I was here for she looked dumbfounded and confused. I had to wait another 30 mins just for kiara to finish doing whatever she was doing in the back to come out & wash my hair. The wash was horribly rushed and my hair wasn't even clean, she didn't use any conditioner either. Just bad, I could still smell my hair, I should've stopped her nd told her to re wash it but I didn't, smh. She then proceeded to retwisting & I noticed how I wasn't the only one receiving bad service, all of the people who entered were treated poorly as well. Clients would come in to state who they was here to see and they would all look dumbfounded like they didn't want to do it smh. She took about an hour in total to do my hair, like I said RUSHED!! I'm not going to lie, I liked my hair when she was done! Too bad I only was able to wear it for about 5 days because of her not washing it completely, my hair STUNK LIKE A SKUNK!! Called this salon on December 29, 2020 and made an appointment for January 2, 2021 at 1pm. I called today just to see if there were any cancelations for me to possibly move my appointment up earlier, and thank god I called before wasting my damn time. They didn't have any earlier slots and I was fine with keeping my 1pm slot. However, the receptionist tells me there was no slot at that time for me. She didn't see anything under my name or number for that day. Since there was clearly a mistake, I asked if I could be accommodated as a walk in? All I wanted done was a wash, trim, and some kind of natural styling. Wouldn't have taken long at all. The receptionist states, "you can walk in for a trim only but not full styling." Who the hell walks in for just a trim?! So now I'm pissed because I have an event today and due to Da Notty Roots disorganization, I'm scrambling to find someone to style my hair. Where do I start... I have NEVER had a shop destroy my hair like this. In 20 minutes this broad took off more than SIX inches of my hair! I showed a friend and she asked if the hairdresser was blind!? I went in there with 4 different pics, fully explaining that I did NOT want to cut my hair(just a trim) and even said something to her when I saw her cutting too much. She STILL screwed it up! I walked out of there with what looked like a fro-mullet, and more than three YEARS of growth was gone from the entire front part of my head! I usually don't let people with weave cut my hair but she was the only person in the shop that cuts so I figured she knew what to do. WRONG!! If you're natural just go somewhere else, anywhere but here! I saw products being used that no natural should put in their hair, she used a fine toothed comb on my DRY hair(common sense would tell you not to do that), she didn't use ANYTHING while detangling (aka pulling my hair out) and completely ignored everything I said before and during the cut! I called around and was at a regular salon less than an hour later, it was that bad! The second salon had to cut off the rest of my hair to make it work, but honestly, it was the only option! I'm going to try and post a picture here, because that's the only way you'll fully understand what I looked like after that experience. Yesterday morning I could rest my arm on my hip if I wanted to play with the ends of my hair. Today, it barely stretches to shoulder length. Diamond Springs Location I wouldn't send my dog here to get their hair done. Fool.me once shame on u, fool me twice shame on me. Time#1. I went to get my locs started. Long story short, when I left my hair was white and flaky, I was told to just towel it off. Idk what kind of thick orange concoction they use but it is not good!!My scarf and pillow was covered in grease. I took my locs out and got them done elsewhere. Time-#2. My regular stylist couldn't get me in so I said hey....how can you mess up an updo, let me give knotty roots another try. So, I went in as a walk in for a loc updo. It was pretty empty so I got helped right away. Thank GOD I asked do they take credit/debit cards before I got my hair done.....because they don't. So I had to walk to the ATM and get cash out. I come back in and my stylist has started on another clients hair so I sit and wait. In the middle of doing that client, the stylist walks over and starts tugging and pulling on my hair. Never was I asked what type of style I want or anything. So LITERALLY 45 seconds later my hair is "done" and I look like a plucked chicken. My 4 year old grandchild could have done better. I have tons of new growth and she didn't bother to apply any gel to my edges or anything. I got in my car and took this bullshit "style" out of my head with tears in my eyes. If you are a loose natural - do.not.go.there! I went in for a trim (to the Chesapeake location). I HAD BSL hair... and I asked prior to going how I should prep my hair. Was told to come as I am. The owner of the shop ripped out my hair -- combing it dry -- from the roots to the ends... "where-dey-do-dat-at?" Apparently there! I was amazed! I suggested she mist my hair; dampen my hair -- anything... nope! And then who trims hair without checking for symmetry? My hair had multiple lengths... just looking cray! Remember Coolio -- well, guess she thought that was an appealing way to send out a client. Lesson learned -- NEVER AGAIN will I go to another salon to do my hair. I really thought going to a natural hair salon would yield positive results.. I had high hopes for this salon -- but was utterly disappointed! Utterly! I Definitely will never ever go back there and will never recommend it to loose naturals. If you are loc'd -- you may have better luck! My recommendation for them -- check out YouTube on how to handle loose natural hair. Ripping hair out is "not ok"! I really wish I read Ericka R's (see below) review BEFORE I went. Don't go to them unless you have locs. They don't detangle your hair and you will have a headache by the time you leave because of all the pulling and snatching they do on your ends. Even after I showed my discomfort the stylist still did not ease up. If you have kinky hair and need a condition and detangle you won't get it. I don't recommend them at all. read more

First of all Denise, the owner, didn't even Loc my wife's hair, instead, she fused them together with heat! made an appointment for the same day. When I got there I explained what style I wanted I was informed that they could do it. I paid an extra 10 for the honey treatment I don't think she used a lot on my hair but ok whatever. My stylist Shi sat me under the dryer with a old shower cap on I could smell it when  she was putting it on my head. I sat under the dryer for 10 minutes while listening to them talk about love and hip hop while using foul language. After I came from under the dryer she began to do my hair I told her I wanted them small but was told I don't have to have them that small due to me getting them twisted out but I told her how big I wanted them because I know how big I want my final curl to be but was told that I shouldn't get them that small. I don't understand if I'm the client and I tell you how I want them they should b done how I want it. When she was detangling my hair it wasn't so bad I just wish she would've been a little bit more easy on my hair... so while she's doing my hair she dropped the comb on the floor then tried to use it on my head without cleaning it or anything I had to tell her to clean the comb before using it...so as the day when on she took my hair a loose and it was a DISASTER!!!! I hated my hair when she was done another stylist by the name is Melissa stepped in and said she would try to fix it my original stylist just left and didn't make sure I was good or anything needless to say I was there for over 9 hours to get a 3 -4  hour style. But I do plan on coming back I'll just be sure I make my appointment with Melissa not with anyone else!!! read more

I am very big on customer service and this place really disappointed me. I originally made my appointment July 3rd for July 5th for micro braid at the Lynnhaven mall location. I had walked pass there a couple of times and liked the work I was seeing so I finally stopped in to make appointment. I stopped in on the 4th to ensure I had the right hair and to find out the price- $220. Shortly after leaving the mall on the 4th I got a call from a not to professional manager to see if I could come @ 700. I told her I couldn't and asked if I could keep my original 1030. I could tell she didn't like it but she said that was fine. The she asked if I could come to their diamond springs location- which is about 30 mins from my home as oppose to the mall thats 10 mins- but I said that was fine. When I walked in at 1030 my braider was just starting on another head!! She mentioned something about the 700 time then told me because of my hair length she would have to charge me an additional $40 to the $220 I was already paying! I Then to add insult to injury, she wanted me to come back at 330 to even start!! It's 1030 in the morning and I'm 30 mins away from home! She kept asking me was I going to come back and to ensure that I did I had to put down a deposit!! I did but I was totally blown away and very upset. I ended up going right down the street as a walk in and got a cheaper price. When I went to get my deposit back ($20) they seem to have an attitude and had to ask the braider if she could even though it hadn't been 20 mins!! I'm sorry but I can't support a place that doesn't care about their customers time and treats them like they're expendable!!! read more

I visited the Da Notty Roots for the first time on a Thursday. Despite the environment not being completely inviting or comfortable, I was satisfied with the styling of my locs and the stylist who serviced me (whose name I cannot recall--Beautiful slim woman with colored locs and shaved sides). While paying for my service I scheduled an appointment for my daughter for which I placed a required $50 deposit for a style that costs $180. I had no problem doing that, as I understand the reasoning behind requiring a deposit. Unfortunately, the day before my daughter's appointment my mother suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm and stroke. Considering all that occurred, I still managed to call them and explain my situation and let them know I would not be able to make the appointment the next day. The woman I spoke to said that would be fine and to call back when I could reschedule. With me practically living at the hospital and caring for my mom it was 27 days before I called back. I wanted to know what my options were because I wasn't prepared to reschedule as my daughter was now departing. A woman claiming to be the manager (Trisha) explained rather rudely that appointments usually have to be carried out within 30 days of the initial deposit. I told her that I understood and asked if she'd be willing to make an exception and allow me to reserve my deposit for a later appointment considering the circumstances. She quickly and adamantly said no. Her tone and lack of proper business acumen was very disconcerting. As a businesswoman I say with confidence that a return client paying $180 plus for a style is far more valuable than a one-time payment of $50. Again, I didn't want a refund, only to reserve my deposit for a later appointment. This was the first salon I went to in 4 years since growing my locs as I've come to find that people that are good at "doing hair" are often terrible at business and simple customer relations. read more

Diamond Springs location. First of all this place is very expensive. She wanted to charge me $170 for starter locs. She said the price was high because my hair is too long. My hair comes to my collar bone it's not like it was down my back. Then proceeded to tell me it's just like going to the African braiding. I have never went to African braiding I do my own hair. I wanted a professional because I cannot see in the back of my head. They seem friendly. But the lady told me I could not get two strand twists as a method to start my locs. I looked at her like she was crazy. lol everyone knows that is a good method. I did call to set up the appointment and left s message, which was fine. But the lady that called me back was a little rude. But it's all good. I will just try to do them myself because this is a black shop that's robbing black people. And they only take cash. I just left Da Notty Roots and as someone who maintains her own hair I was very impressed with the customer service. The reason I started maintaining my own hair is because the shops I went to would overbook and mask it by putting u under the dryer and/or have u waiting forever! It wasn't worth it. Da Notty Roots has changed my mind. It was an environment in which I would enjoy frequenting to get my hair maintenance. I just moved here from Hawaii and was looking for a good salon. I was excited to go to this salon after I read the reviews. I'm very picky about who I let in my head so I've been thoroughly searching for a stylist who would keep my hair healthy. I booked an appointment with a stylist there. The stylists were nice. The wait time was very short, which is a plus. The shampoo felt awesome but very brief and I don't think she used any conditioner in my hair which is a super no no for any hair especially natural hair. I asked for a style and she said that my hair wasn't thick enough for the style but she tried to do the style anyway but said she would pin it up. Cool....because I trusted she knew what she was doing. She didnt put any leave in conditioner but tried to comb through my hair but couldn't so she tried to blow dry but her technique was all wrong and I don't think she used any heat protectant before she began to TRY to blow dry my hair. Ne tres bien pas! A few times while braiding my hair I coul hear some pops like she was breaking my hair off. When she was done she gave me the mirror. It didnt look bad. At the front and the back was nice from what I could see in the mirror. Then when in the car I saw some white stuff in the front of my hair. I got home and took a thorough look at my hair. AWFUL! It was pinned up every which way. Being a stylist sometimes you have to direct the customer as to what would be best for the client when a style cannot be executed because of hair type, thickness, length, etc. I was not satisfied with pinned up part but the braided part was nice. I paid $70 for something I was half satisfied with.my hair was not shiny. It was dry and whatever she used to do my twist left my hair waxy, dull, dry, and with a white residue. I've seen other styles on the FB page that were lovely and from the look of some clients' faces, they seemed satisfied, but MY personal experience was not a good one. read more

My 2nd appointment I was not a very happy customer . When I walked in everyone looked as if I was an inconvience to their business because I wanted specific work done. A few employees were very unprofessional . They did not have the correct supplies for what I was asking for nor did anyone volunteer as an employee to go to the hair store to get it instead they sent me in the rain maybe the coldest day of the year. For one I'm not understanding if it's a hair salon why are you not supplied with common hair supplies that many people use . For two I just think it's a plus in customer service to make your customer feel welcomed by providing as much service as possible . There were several employees not occupied the whole time I was there . That's no big deal every salon does things different I understand. Maybe it was just a bad day that day . I've been visiting the battlefield location ever since and things seem to go a lot smoother . They're very friendly . Everyone seem very professional and really about their money . I really like the environment . Both salons are very clean and have a good vibe as far as the music conversation etc . The receptionist by the way is very rude . Everytime I talk to her to make an appointment I sense attitude in her voice .i believe everyone deserves chances to correct their mistake and I'm glad I gave them a second 3rd and fourth chance . This is about the Hampton location: I call to make my appointment for a consultation, the lady just answers the phone with a "hello".... and that's it, as if it were her own personal phone. I should have known then that there was going to be a problem. I ask if this is a place of business and she just said, "yes," I have to ask her "what is it called? And what is your name?" in order to get any decent intro out of her. In less than a minute, I see that this place is not run professionally. However, I really wanted to give them a chance because they claim to be a natural hair care salon and I was looking for someone to cut, style, and maybe color my kinky hair as well as educate me on how to take care of it better, and I was really hoping that Da Notty Roots would be that place for me. The female tells me to come that day at 4pm. I rush over there after work, and NO ONE is there! I wait a few seconds, assuming that she was just running a little behind. And when I call, the owner answers the phone, I tell her that I am at the Hampton location and the female that I made the appointment with isn't there. She told me that she will call her to see where she is and that she will call me right back. A few minutes later, I call her back because she hasn't called me. She said that she just got off the phone with the girl and that the girl went on lunch break and will be back in about 15 minutes. My mouth just drops. By this time it is almost 4:20 PM.... I can not for the life of me understand why someone would take lunch at the same time that they have scheduled an appointment with a potential future customer. And then for the owner to be so nonchalant and tell me that her employee, who is already 20 minutes late, will be an extra 15 minutes late and ask if I could wait. I proceeded to tell her No I was not going to wait, I had already wasted enough time. The owner then tells me that they do things differently in VA Beach and asked if I wanted to go there. The audacity of these people. Why would I want to drive all the way to VA Beach for bad service? I had a few more words with her, but that was it. Their customer service is abysmal. As the owner, if she really cared, she could have offered to service me herself at the Hampton location, she could have given me a good discount on services or gave me a free service if I gave them another chance, something - she just should have done more to earn my business other than ask me to waste even more of my time. They got some nerve. Their customer service is the worst; they are unprofessional, even down to answering the phone; and it's clear they don't care about their customers. Initially, I was a little upset, but now, I am just glad that God intervened so that I wouldn't trust some nincompoop to wreck havoc on my hair. read more
