I've been going here for several years and have always been happy with the service. They are a small owner-operated hair salon so it's nice if you like personal attention, and not feeling like you are on an assembly line. You might have to wait a week or two for an appointment, so don't wait till last minute! I don't think this is a full service spa-type salon, where they do things like pedicures and massages, make up, or any of that. After being with the same stylist for years back home in Baltimore, I reluctantly went on the search for someone new in my new city. Fortunately I found an amazing stylist here at Salon Fringe! Alexa got me in on relatively short notice and at an hour compatible with my work schedule. She was super skilled and I left feeling so great about my hair (due to a busy schedule I hadn't had a proper cut in a long time, getting those dead ends cut off felt amazing!) I was scared I would never find someone who could cut Asian hair in Norfolk (thankfully, I was wrong!). My hair is thick but I wanted it to somehow be unlayered without being heavy - Alexa definitely got what I was trying to describe right off the bat and gave me the exact look I wanted. I really loved the warm and friendly atmosphere of the salon. No one seemed to be pushy or in a rush. It seemed to me that the stylists working when I was there genuinely enjoyed their work and talking with their customers. I will definitely be back! I have been going here about a year and I love it! I was looking for a salon that was knowledgeable and professional, and it was arduous. Salon Fringe is upscale in a great location with outstanding staff! Everyone is always kind and I never feel judged. The owner does my hair and he is very well versed on hair types and how to treat them. As an African American natural female, it is imperative that my stylist is competent. Out of all the salons I've tried in the Hampton Roads area (and there's been many), Salon Fringe is hands down the best! My hair is healthy and gorgeous. Upon entry, you will be offered tea or water and the receptionists are bubbly. They are located across from the Slover library and the inside is always stellar. Be sure to bring cash for your tip. It would be one star except for Alexa who's been great when I've seen her. This is the second time I've come here and had someone else finish me off other than the original stylist in order to accommodate a walk in. My hair doesn't look good. I paid for a blowout that frizzed out within an hour and it's not because of the humidity. Just bad styling that involved the initial stylist cutting out tangles in my hair in a rush rather than just trying to comb them out. I had to be at a work event or else I would've gone back and asked for them to fix it. On another occasion I waited nearly an hour after my appointment time to be seen bc the scheduled hair stylist had to fix another customers hair. I kept being told "it'll only be a few more minutes". The staff at this place have zero consideration for customers time. At this point I have no interest in going back to this salon and will be searching for a new one. read more

My daughter decided to try out salon fringe in norfolk and had the absolute worst experience! Hair color did not stay on long enough and turned out too light. even though she went on what should have been a not so busy day, she was sent off with her hair rinsed, wet, uneven coloring. for over 200 dollars I would have expected a bit more attention to customer service She was so upset that she went straight to Sally's for hair dye to color on top of her Bleached and washed out uneven coloring. Wow. I am blown away by the customer service of this place. My stylist addressed all of my concerns and saw exactly what I was upset about. She walked me through everything: pricing, upkeep, and gave me a variety of colors and tones to look through. I was very, very appreciate of how patient and understanding she was. In response to everything, I could tell she genuinely wanted me to be satisfied and comfortable with my hair. After toning my hair, I am absolutely in love. I hadn't had my hair done since Mid-February (Covid). My hair was a long stringy grown out dry mess, with roots and grown out balayage that had turned a bit brassy. I found Salon Fringe online, and booked an appointment with Tarah. She listened to exactly what I wanted, and added her much needed input on color and texturizing. Tarah transformed my hair into this GORGEOUS healthy shiny almond brown and gave me a shoulder length bob of sheer perfection, a la Anna Wintour, minus the bangs. When I told her my hair gets a bit heavy on the bottom, she snuck in some hidden layers and texturizing. Tarah's transformation of my hair gave me a bit of mental health back. Unfortunately I am only temporarily in Norfolk for my husband's job, but I would definitely go out of my way to visit her again. Highly recommended. read more

I love my first time there and my hair came out a beautiful gold balayage which I love, however, I am trying to get to silver balayage. The stylist said it'll take two tries, and the second time I left the salon with a 3 inches of transition color of golden brown inbetween the black and the silver. I would like to voice my distaste for your customer service. I did NOT receive a confirmation text regarding my appointment (although you claim to have recently implemented this), and when it appeared on my calendar first thing this morning, I called to cancel and reschedule for another date. The appointment was scheduled at 6:30 pm (only an hour before you close), and I called 9 hours before the appointment time. I had a family emergency unexpectedly this weekend that I had to travel out of state for, so I didn't have a chance to check my email on a SATURDAY while I was dealing with these issues (and I do not check emails during the weekends normally anyway; perhaps you should send during weekdays). If you want to enact such strict cancellation policies perhaps you should utilize a texting service that allows appointment changes via a click, such as I have experienced with other salon and service companies. I have been to your salon twice after recently moving to the area, and would have liked continuing to go, as Alexa is great. But I think it's absolutely ridiculous that you are willing to let go of THOUSANDS of dollars in future revenue from me (I like to get my hair colored and cut often), for a one-time charge of $37.50. You weren't even open yesterday, so how would I have been able to cancel anyway? How is 6:29 pm on a Sunday evening during closing hours with a voicemail acceptable, but first thing in the morning on Monday when you are actually open isn't? The day had barely started when I called to cancel, and the appointment is at the end of the day. I understand the need for policies, but I do think extenuating circumstances need to be considered. Cancelling several hours ahead of time (almost a full workday), and also if the cancellation is due to things like death and illness should be dealt with in a different manner. I do not authorize ANY charges to my card, and will be taking the matter to my credit card company for refusal if you attempt to do so. I regret that your business is trying to enact such ridiculous policies. I have never dealt with a salon that handled things in such a poor manner, as I would have otherwise continued to be a customer for the remainder of my time in Norfolk during the next few years. read more

Finally I decided to get permanent waving done to my long thin hair. Being new in the area I had no one to ask and just went from salon to salon for a consultation before I picked and committed. After six visits Fringe stuff won me right away even being more pricey than all other upper level salons in the area. First I was worried because they didn't want to test my hair to see how it will handle the perm. (My friend just had perm done in different state and they did test a piece of her hair before doing entire head). And I was ready for a mild damage as long as I will walk away with nice curls. Justin convinced me that my hair is perfect for this treatment and no testing needed. $200 later (with generous the tip) my hair looked like wrinkled mess, damaged dry hair and no sine of curls. I cried because my biggest nightmare was that to happen. I went back in a week for another appointment with cut and color. I was hoping they will be carrying giving how nice they were so far and will offer a solution or complementary service like most places do... They offered nothing and just told me they can't predict everyone's hair. This is not a situation where "Oh I didn't like my haircut I want my money back", this was hair that looked like sponge and they didn't care!... As long as you are happy with the services and stuff, just like I was, it will be fine. However, if they will screw something up don't expect them to run to fix it for you at their cost. I've been once, and I won't go again. I scheduled a hair cut, color & eyebrow wax. After my cut and color was finished, I was told there was no time left for an eyebrow wax. I wanted a medium brown color with highlights. Think Emily Deschanel in the early seasons of Bones. We talked color, and she decided to put some blonde in to give it dimension. My hair ended up jet black with a few skinny blonde streaks in. It looked terrible, and the cut was incredibly uneven in the back (i have a simple cut - layered, shoulder length). Luckily, since I HATED my color, it faded within 10 days to the mousiest shade of brown imaginable. read more

I've been living in Hampton Roads for almost two years. I've had my hair cut a few times in the area, but ultimately have been waiting until I go back home to see my stylist there. Out of desperation I decided to give one more salon a chance and called Salon Fringe. The receptionist set me up with Sabrina. The day of my appointment I had to fill out some paperwork. They keep a little white dog in front- it's super cute. As soon as I finished the paperwork Sabrina saw me and we talked about the haircut. I went here for the first time looking to do a copper balayage with a subtle shadowed root and, unfortunately, my hair wasn't quite what I had wanted the first time around. Let me start by saying that I have been to 4 different high-end salons in Norfolk. That being said, I called Fringe and got an appointment for highlights the same day my first visit! I've been back several times over the last few years after bad experiences with the Davines color line. The receptionists are always very welcoming upon my entrance. I saw Allison at one time for highlights, but she's no longer there. She was realistic when consulting with me. I showed her a picture of what I wanted. She told me getting that much lighter (without turning orange) would be easiest if I just got highlights instead of all over color. My hair looked great, and very natural! We didn't achieve the end look I was going for, but she told me that would not happen up front because it was a dark brown with some reddish tint at the time. She said it would be best to go lighter in phases over time to protect hair quality. I went again a few months later and got more highlights and got much closer to my desired look. Most recently I saw Liz Edwards. She was amazing, and currently a junior stylist so much more affordable than Master or Senior stylists. She specializes in balayage. She took my hair full blonde like I asked, something I was never able to achieve through the natural Davines color line. Fringe uses Loreal Professional color which I much prefer. I also got the Olaplex add-on and I do think my hair seems much softer than other times I went lighter. Liz also nailed my cut and has a genuine personality. I'll def be calling her my go-to stylist moving forward. By the way, you cannot tip via card. So have cash or check readily available. Also, parking can be annoying because it's downtown Norfolk. read more

Great salon, the owners are great. The only reason why I gave a 4 was location and my stylist. The location could use some work. I hate paying for parking / having to run out to the meter with the appointment lasts longer than expected. It's a small salon but they get the job done. The stylist I had did a great job, however I felt like I was talking to Drew Barrymore in the movie 50 first dates. The girl never remembered who I was and I felt like I had to reintroduce myself every 4 weeks. When you go there for a year, I'm not sure why I had to keep doing that. The owner was always around which is fantastic to see and he would jump in on critiques if needed which was great to. I would have continued going here, but I don't like paying for parking and again, my stylist seemed to never take a professional interest in remembering me. I can't say enough great things about my experience at this salon and with stylist Liz Edwards! She's professional, kind, creative, and fun! I wanted a cut and color that had some edge to it, but could easily transition to my professional job... We brainstormed together and came up with a fabulous unique style that's resulted in tons of compliments! It's like something off Pinterest! The salon itself is aesthetically pleasing. With exposed brick interior, old Hollywood style mirrors, comfortable chairs, and pleasant aromas... You can't help but feel relaxed. Don't let parking woes prevent you from considering this as your newest "salon home". I haven't found such a wonderful staff in all of Virginia yet (and I tried lots of places locally as well as when I used to live in NoVA)! Update: It has been quite some time since my first visit to Salon Fringe. I've continued seeing Christine for regular haircuts to keep my hair healthy as I grow out the length. I can't tell you how wonderful each experience has been! Most recently, I showed up on the wrong day and they were still able to accommodate me. Had they not been able to, I would've understood, but it was a blessing as I've moved further away. Christine is 110% worth the drive! Let me tell you why: Christine let's me pick her brain. Any questions I have about products, treatments/services offered, tools, how to's, etc. she is honest, gives great advice, and wonderful recommendations. Christine has helped me find products that truly work for my hair, has given me great advice on how to take care of and style my hair, and pick her brain for little tricks I would never think of. With lots of practice, I am now confident in styling my hair, thanks to Christine! I found this Salon on yelp so I thought it was fitting I'd share my thoughts here. I had an absolutely lovely experience with my stylist, William. From start to finish of my service, William was kind, professional, and engaging. I am very very thrilled with my cut. I'm always wary of the stylist taking artistic license to cut off a few inches more than I asked for in the name of health of my hair. Instead of doing this, William recommended a moisturizing treatment which enabled me to walk out of the salon loving my healthy looking long hair and not heartbroken. The price was unbeatable. I would completely give this place a full 5 stars if they did not keep my credit card on file! Seriously who does this? At the rate computers are being hacked nowadays, this is only a disaster waiting to happen. Brittany had her work cut out for her, the lady who had done my hair previously butchered it. To fix it she had to cut it shorter, not a big fan getting it cut shorter but she had to do it. We will see how it styles tomorrow morning, that is the ultimate test. My hair stylist is phenomenal. The manager lacks personality and polite professionalism. The manager of this store was absolutely rude about my mask. At first my nose wasn't fully covered so I politely complied with her request to cover it. But then she insisted I tighten the ear loops and was persistent about offering me a paper mask that they would provide. I have an organic cotton mask that fits properly and I take my health very seriously. She scrutinized the covering of my face even AFTER my nose, mouth and chin were fully covered with a tri-fold extendable face covering legit mask!!! Throughout my appointment, I watched her with other clients. Each client, including the manager, had their own face masks resting right at the bump of their nose just like mine had been originally before she insisted it be at the top of the bridge of my nose!! One client even slipped her mask to rest under her nose at one point. The manager didn't offer any instruction to those clients who were in her full view, however. If one's nose and mouth is covered, then the governor's mandate is fulfilled. She was absolutely wrong to treat me that way and not hold the same standard for others. Totally rude and hypocritical!!! I have been coming here for about 3-4 years and will never go anywhere else! After a series of botched haircuts and orange highlights, I finally went to Salon Fringe. Kevin cut my hair right the first time after a long consultation and the color was perfect. He really takes the time to make sure you get exactly what you want and is not afraid to tell you when a certain style/color is not right for you. Highly recommended and I have sent many people their way with equally good experiences. I even sent my husband who is in the Navy and was tired of terrible haircuts on base. So I'm super frustrated that I even have to write this review. I was recommended to come here by a family member. And I did a consult with a master stylist to make sure what I wanted was achievable. The ladies name was Brittany and she was great! We talked about what we'd do and I set the date. Unfortunately I had my c section moved up to that that date so I couldn't see her anymore. When I called back to see if there was anyone else who could do it, they were once again great at accommodating for me and set me up with the owner Justin. When I sat down in his chair I showed him the same picture of what I wanted, which he barely looked at. But he started talked about what we would do. I specifically stated I wanted to keep as much length as possible and wanted a long loose bob. I just wanted my ends cleaned up. Even he stressed he didn't want to take too much hair because we could always take more. Well i now have bangs, layers, and the very opposite of a long bob. The color was suppose to frame around my face and it doesn't. I have lots of red in my hair that's showing and I just feel like I wasn't heard and dismissed in his chair as just another number. It's unfortunate because he was friendly enough, but my experience was not worth the $215 I paid and most definitely not what I asked for remotely. read more

I had Amanda, and she was great. She recognized and vocalized a lot of things she noticed with my hair - past the usual "compliments". She seemed attuned to what I wanted vice what she thought I needed, and still made the right recommendations toward my own input.
