Long hair before cut
James C.

So I haven't gotten my hair cut in almost a decade. As a swimmer my hair got all thin and dead on the ends so it was time to hit the restart button. I can't be more pleased with the cut I got and I feel so much lighter mentally and physically. Like 10 years of stress (literally) off of my shoulders. I wish I could remember the name of my stylist but huge thanks to her.

No relaxer!

I have been going here about a year and I love it! I was looking for a salon that was knowledgeable and professional, and it was arduous. Salon Fringe is upscale in a great location with outstanding staff! Everyone is always kind and I never feel judged. The owner does my hair and he is very well versed on hair types and how to treat them. As an African American natural female, it is imperative that my stylist is competent. Out of all the salons I've tried in the Hampton Roads area (and there's been many), Salon Fringe is hands down the best! My hair is healthy and gorgeous. Upon entry, you will be offered tea or water and the receptionists are bubbly. They are located across from the Slover library and the inside is always stellar. Be sure to bring cash for your tip. I forgot a few times and regretted it miserably. Hats off to you Salon Fringe. You're the best!

Two visit and half a grand later , my silver balayage...
Anna Z.

I love my first time there and my hair came out a beautiful gold balayage which I love, however, I am trying to get to silver balayage. The stylist said it'll take two tries, and the second time I left the salon with a 3 inches of transition color of golden brown inbetween the black and the silver. It literally looks like Crayola exploded in my hair or I dip dyed it. I will have to go to another salon to see if they can fix it.

Being a Cali native myself, the name intrigued me. I later found out the owner is from Cali also…read moreand often travels to and from there to here. They prefer appointments, but will take walk-ins (be mindful that priority will always go to appointment clients) I wanted to do a walk in, but ended up setting a same day appointment, only 2 hours after I made the call, so it a doable wait time. I ate lunch and had a nap before coming in, so it was already leading up to a nice chill day. My stylist was an older lady, and she was very pleasant, quick nimble with the scissors and mostly styled my hair with just her hands (I have natural waves) and used very little product. And my hair turned out better than I expected. I basically got a wolf cut with soft layers. As we talked, I found out she's had a collective of over 30 years experience cutting hair both abroad and here In the states. I can really appreciate the service she gave along with her pleasant demeanor during the whole experience I had. My husband ended up going there to get his hair cut a few days later...and I was happy with what they did to his hair as well. Very clean and styled in a way that suits his face and head shape. Not just a cookie cutter hairstyle that looks the same on everyone. This one really flattered his specific look and personality. The only downside is parking on a busy day, the lot is small and right up near a busy street. So I understand why they encourage appointments, to keep the parking lot from being crowded. So it seems like they already put some consideration into setting up a good experience for their clientele. I look forward to visiting them again in the future for a color job I want to try. All I wanted this time around was a wash, cut and style and it was decently priced and professionally done in a relatively short amount of time. Always tip your stylist, especially if you can't stop smiling at what a great job they did. thanks for the amazing service!

I didn't leave an immediate review after my haircut because I wanted to take time and reflect…read morerather than write out of emotion. My hair has since grown back, and with clarity, I feel comfortable sharing my experience. I booked a haircut online for a listed price of $70. During booking, I shared a reference photo and explained in detail that my hair is very long and thick, and that I needed a stylist who would be patient and not rush the service. When I arrived, I re-showed the reference photo and reiterated what I wanted. Once I was in the chair, the stylist explained that she only has one hour per client. Despite this, the appointment felt rushed and disorganized. I know this because my service ran into her next client's scheduled time. That client waited for a period of time and ultimately canceled with her and worked with another stylist in the salon. While the stylist stated she only had one hour per client, my appointment ran well beyond that. My scheduled appointment time was 12:30 PM. I received a text at 11:43 AM asking if I wanted to come in early, and my receipt was sent to me at 2:13 PM. Even accounting for arriving early, this places my appointment at over two hours from start to finish--far longer than the one-hour window that was repeatedly referenced. I specifically asked for layered hair with shorter layers to help with the weight. Instead, I was given long layers, and my hair was thinned out without my consent ( as you can see the bottom portion of my hair is noticeably thin, compared to the top) . I didn't say anything at the time because the thinning had already been done and couldn't realistically be fixed. While my hair is healthy and grows back, the haircut I received was not the haircut I asked for. It wasn't "messed up," but it also wasn't what I requested. At checkout, the stylist leaned over and whispered to the receptionist, after which an additional $25 charge for thick/long hair was added. This charge was not discussed with me directly, despite my hair length and thickness being clearly disclosed before booking. After leaving a Google review outlining these concerns, the owner publicly accused me of never being a client and stated she stood by her stylist, without acknowledging the issues raised. Later that same night, I was contacted directly via text around 10:30 PM asking to "chat." That message was unsolicited and crossed a professional boundary, especially after publicly dismissing my experience. The outreach did not include an apology and felt more focused on protecting the business's image than addressing client concerns. I was polite throughout this entire process and even tipped my stylist. There was no malice on my end--just honest feedback. While my hair did grow back, not everyone is in that position, and an experience like this could be very upsetting for someone struggling with self-image. Ultimately, the lack of communication, consent, and professionalism--both during the service and afterward--is why I would not return and why I'm sharing this experience here for other women

Plus, they offer gift cards right on their website, which is perfect for when you want to give the gift of gorgeous hair without the guessing game I always send my friends the link to exactly what I want ! When I walked in, I almost thought I had the wrong place because they rearranged everything to fit in two more booths! Love seeing how much they're growing! Today, I had the pleasure of getting my hair done by the lovely Idelette Herbst, and let me tell you, she is a dream. She took the time to really listen to what I wanted and executed it flawlessly. Also, can we talk about the head massage she gave me during the shampoo? ‍‍She totally nailed my haircut, and I'm already counting down the days until my next appointment with her. Oh, and let me just say--the playlist was everything! At one point, I thought they were playing my personal playlist because every single song was one I listen to.

BLACK MEN, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES COME HERE. I dont know any black men who do go to Hair Cutteries…read morein the first place, but I was in need and needed something fast and nearby. It's on me for waiting the day before graduation to get a haircut but had I known it would be this bad I'd have done it myself. Booked online (the portal said an appointment was $17; I ended up paying $50). Showed up wanting nothing fancy, just a line up and a beard trim; I saw other reviews mentioning that certain of the staff were good with textured hair and so I went in optimistic. The woman who ultimately ended up cutting my hair did a horrible job. If Im the first black male whose hair she ever cut I would not be shocked. Lineup uneven. Patchy areas left along back of neck. A slight cut on my chin from the beard went uncleaned (I applied alcohol at home); I left covered in my own hair. Shortly thereafter ran into roommates on the street and they were shocked. The whole cut was about 15 minutes long, and as I said I ended up paying $50+tip (God knows why I left one; I will say she took the beard off so that's appreciated). My mention that I was a graduating student did not even warrant a congratulations. And now my hair looks worse than when I showed up. Thank God the gown comes with a cap.
