Not sure if this is vietnamese tradition but my steak and rice was both undercooked and room temperature at best, as if it had been "cooked" hours earlier and the left to sit, uncovered, as it had a rubbery, un-chewable texture accented by a rancid / oxidized taste, and very little flavoring on top of that. I would compare the experience to "swallowing your own tounge." Oh Da Nang! How I crave thee steak bahn mi. I love everything about it. It is a complete party in the mouth, creating an addiction! I have yet to try the noodles, or salad, or anything else they have. I love the beef here. They infuse it perfectly with their sauces, and toppings, one of my favorites being sweet sour, and spicy cucumbers. One thing you should know, this is a hot spot for lunch. Be prepared for a line. They also serve grub hub, so you will also be waiting for a bit. This is right in front of the wine lab, so you can get a beverage from there. I wish you could get a Thai iced tea. That would be a perfect compliment to this. This place is close to where my guy works, so it is easy to go visit him, and then eat lunch here. I can imagine it might get a little harder during the cooler Months. Especially since the seating is mainly outside. I may end up being one of the future grub hub orders. I just love this place! Let me break it down: LOCATION: Food truck in the parking lot of the Wine Lab. They have outdoor seating with the option of eating in the Wine Lab. It's a nice option when it's raining, and it seems like they've got a good relationship with the Wine Lab. It's close to the Whiteaker neighborhood which has lots of bars, but isn't in a super busy area so you can still enjoy your meal without a ruckus. SERVICE: These guys are so friendly! They love telling you about the different hot sauces they're making or any upcoming specials. They bring the food to wherever you're sitting and always ask if you want more hot sauce, are not stingy with to go containers or anything like that. They just seems like genuinely nice people who love what they do. Also, these guys are the real deal. We came to get some pho one day just to discover that they're in Vietnam visiting family for a month! No wonder their food tastes so authentic. This is the only bon mi in town that comes close to the right taste as the authentic Vietnamese baguette. They have modernized it without the pork pate but their garlic aioli adds that perfect fatness where I don't even miss it. Their chicken bon mi hits the spot. The steak has some of the banh mi favor but not really. The overall sandwich was just like a regular steak sandwich with a spicy peanut sauce and not much favor in the sauce. I thought I'd posted 5 stars on here years ago but it's not pulling up so I need to rectify that ASAP. I've been coming here for the last couple years and often would bring out of town visitors to try it. Truth be told, 99.9% of the time I'd get the same thing: steak salad with hot sauce and all of the toppings. I could eat that every day for the rest of my life. Hands down my favorite salad EVER. When they did a pop up in a restaurant I went and tried their expanded menu and miss those wings! I've also purchased many of the chicken pho pot pies and am sad I only have one left in my freezer. Tonight I needed comfort food and had read they would be ending their pho season soon and realized I'd never even tried theirs, so that's what I ordered. My husband got the tofu noodles and we also ordered a steak banh mi to share. Obviously too much food but I inhaled 1/2 of my part of the sandwich! Still had a wonderful crunch on the bread, no sogginess, butter soft steak, and a spicy mix of pickled veggies. Then I dug into the pho and the broth was a deep, rich brown and had an incredible flavor. The noodles were a little wider than I'm used to but they were even better, did not clump and were just the right amount of chew. I loved that it wasn't spicy and I could add the hot sauce as needed. Overall, another wonderful meal. Due to popularity, it can take a bit of time for they to prepare it so allow that time. Living in SoCal, I have been to MANY many Vietnamese restaurants in my day. My family goes at least once a week, and we order all the usual - pho, bun, bahn mo, beef stew, broken rice. When I first heard about Da Nang, let's be honest, I was skeptical. I've had Vietnamese food in pretty ethnically undiverse (okay, let's just say it, predominantly white) geographic locations before, and in my experience, it's usually inauthentic or not very good. I don't know whether it's difficulty of access to ingredients or that people won't know the difference anyways. I thought this would be the case for this little Vietnamese eatery in Eugene, OR. Much to my surprise, it is actually, like...really good. Like...REALLY good. We had the chance to try most of their menu items, and each time I was blown away not only by the authenticity of the taste, but the quality of the ingredients. The bun (noodles) is probably the best bun I've ever had at any Vietnamese restaurant and the beef that goes in the bahn mi (sandwich), rice, and bun is SO good, remarkably tender and flavored so well! I don't know how they do it with the beef but what I think it comes down to is that because the chefs seem to be American born, they do not skimp on the quality of the meats in order to make a larger profit. Their food is not quite Vietnamese American fusion, but just a better, more complex-flavored, higher quality version of the Vietnamese food I've had in SoCal. Only suggestion? Newly opened food cart with Vietnamese cuisine. The owners are two super nice brothers. The food cart changes locations so check their FB page to see where they're going to be. I came on a Tuesday and a Wednesday for lunch and they were at the Wine lab. The concept is very straightforward you choose a protein chicken, steak, or tofu. It comes with either noodles, rice, or baguette. I've come twice. The first time I had the steak baguette which came with pickled veggies, cucumbers, lettuce, and their special sauce. The steak was really tender! I definitely recommend it. And the baguette was toasted, huge plus. The second time I had the chicken w noodles. The chicken was good, juicy and a little smoky. It also came with lettuce, cucumbers, pickles veggies, and mint. My friend had the noodles w tofu which she really liked. Love me some Da Nang! Open for almost a year now, Da Nang has already established quite the following. Their food seems to flow nicely with whatever season it is. In the hotter seasons their banh mi's are light and fluffy full of flavor and quite filling. In the fall and winter their servings of pho and bo kho are soul warming and comforting. Always conveniently parked near a brewery, the combination of Vietnamese food and beer seem to be a pair made in heaven. The young men that run this food truck have worked on the concept and the truck for years leading up to their grand opening and their hard work and passion really shows through their food. The numerous times that I have been there, I witness how much they engage with their customers and that's why they have such a loyal following. I thought it was funny when they decided to leave the country for a month and their customers were visibly upset and constantly wondering when they were going to be back. They are incredibly supportive of other food truck businesses and are a presence in the Asian community. Excellent service, delicious food, I really enjoyed this place. I attended this cart while it was parked over on the lot of a Winery. Before I get into the food, I must say I appreciate the creativity of the two owners of this cart. Instead of stationing their cart in one spot, they rotate locations throughout the week. One day they'll be on the lot of a Winery, another over at Levi's, spend another day at Ninkasi Brewery, etc. In order to enjoy the delicious offerings of this cart, you either have to be lucky enough to fall in the right place at the right time, or follow this crew on social media such as their Instagram page. What I also like about this cart, is the creativity behind their menu. They're not the typical "I'd like to order a bowl of pho with salad rolls" Vietnamese cart. At Da Nang, you're the master of your own meal. With a simple selection of carbs (salad, rice, noodles or sandwich bun), and a selection of proteins (tofu, chicken, beef, and soon to be pork from what I was told), you're the master of your meal. You pair whichever carb source you want bedded with your protein. An awesome spot for vegetarians as well. As for my experience, I ordered beef with noodles (photo posted) which was topped with the bright and delicious seasonings and garnish. I opened my tray to be packed with a generous serving of thin noodles, topped with thick cut juicey beef, topped with cilantro, nuts and sauce with carrots, cucumbers and lettuce on the side. An explosion of flavor. I asked my friend who has frequented this cart where the sauce came from (since it was pretty damn good) and she told me it was house made by the owners. She ordered a tofu salad which is her go-to, and they were generous with her serving as well (as you can see by my photo). The owners of this cart also take pride in serving their food fresh. I also discovered that, although they're stationed in Eugene, they order their bread from Portland. I also heard that, if you don't go here during early to mid shift hours, there's a big chance they run out of food. My adventure did not stop after the beef and noodles. My noodles was a large portion of food, but being that it was evening and I had nothing to eat all day besides a protein shake since I spent my whole day at an interview, plus I was in Eugene for a short amount of time, (and since my first meal was delicious), I wanted more. I ordered a chicken banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich). At first, they were hesitant to serve me since they told me their bread was not fresh. I insisted that I did not mind, and would love to try it anyway. What did they do? Served it to me... NO CHARGE, with concern on their face. Eating my sandwich, the bread was a bit dry, but I was warned. Regardless it was still delicious and packed with flavor. I ate it all up and enjoyed it. If they didn't tell me anything about the bread, I probably would not have complained nor noticed much. Hands down an excellent food cart with friendly service and delicious fresh food. My chicken salad had the perfect combination of sweet and spicy, with the char on the chicken coming through. I also had a "special" spring roll of tofu and veggies wrapped in rice paper that they'll make if you ask (when they aren't busy!)...Also, I called ahead to ask about their soups (Pho) which I've heard are excellent, and received very friendly answers to all my questions. They generally offer their soups Mon and Tues, so keep that in mind. Once at the food truck, I got great in-person service too. (We got hooked on bahn mi when we went to Thi Thi Vietnamese Subs in Calgary, Canada and we have been trying to find a place that is as good as Thi Thi!) The bahn mi here is good. Really good.
