Another review from our trip back in November. Strolled around the alleys around Piazza de Santa Maria in Trastevere. We walked farther away from the busy touristy areas and came across Ristorante Da Massi. A few items on the menu caught our eyes so I bookmarked this so we can make sure to dine here while we are in the area. We went back another evening and waited about 15 mins. This trattoria was absolutely a gem!!! We ordered 3 dishes that were not only authentic but truly exceptional! Carbonara Gnocchi, Seafood Risotto and Chicken Cacciatore in white wine. So confused about the ratings for this spot...because it was just fine, but nothing to write home about. I was scared about crowds so we made a reservation, but really didn't need it when we arrived around 8ish on a weekday. Foodwise, we got a burrata salad with tomatoes to share, my husband had a steak dish with mushrooms, and I had the cacio e pepe. Now full disclosure, I would normally go for a red sauce or a pesto, but given that cacio e pepe is considered one of THE pastas to try in Rome, I opted to get it here. It was...once again, just fine. Salty without much depth and honestly had a bit of bitter after taste which I didn't love. My husband loved the mushrooms with his dish but said the steak quality and cook was not good. The burrata/tomatoes were fresh which was nice. Service was friendly and they do have an English menu which was helpful. The interior is very classic and feels like you are in a classic Roman dining spot. I am not sure I would revisit this restaurant if were in the area again, but honestly, I feel like I'd skip trastevere as a whole. read more

We stayed in an Airbnb, not even 20 feet from Da Massi and walked past it several times before deciding to eat here one evening. As it turns out, this is one of the more amazing restaurants we have discovered in Rome. We had the Salmon and the fruit de de Madre risotto, all of the fish was as fresh as anything we've ever had before. The staff and owner are working as if they own the place because they do! In business for 50 years and they know their craft. Oh, and it is very in-expensive (compared to Boston). So enjoy. read more

This was recommended to us and did not disappoint. A very Roman experience in the Trastevere part of Rome. Very much a Latin Quarter vibe. we were able to sit outside on a lovely evening. Of course being artichoke season, we had the fried artichokes and calamari as antipasto. We also had the veal chop and the lamb riblets (after the osso buco a la Romana ran out). Finished off with side spinach and a salad mista. Worst thing about the menu is there are so many good things to choose from. Really nice place - not too touristy and with great service. We first dined here in 2018. Everything was excellent from service to meals. That's why we specifically went back on our subsequent Rome visit in 2023 due to the good experience in 2018. However, this time the service was horrendous unfortunately. One of us did not get his meal until everyone else was 3/4 done with theirs. It was irritating, but we put it down to their being extremely busy. Second time a few days later similar thing happened: One of us did not get his meal at all. Turns out that the waiter did not remember to place the order! And worse is we were trying to get his attention but he just ignored our table. We had to end up flagging down a different waiter and let him know what the problem was. Maybe they're just too busy to care. read more

When we went here there were two little tables outside so we asked if if could sit at one of them. Best decision because people watching in Trastevere is so fun. For our appendix we, we had the Roman fried artichokes. We were introduced to fried artichokes here in Trastevere. There are three ways you can get them: boiled, fried, or boiled and fried. According the the server, boiled and fried is the best. I haven't tried the other ways that they serve them, but boiled and fried was pretty awesome. For our main entree, I had carbonara and my husband had gnocchi carbonara. (We love our carbonara in Rome!). We had a satisfying and delicious meal at a cute little restaurant that I wouldn't mind coming back to again the future. read more

We stopped as we were wondering around Trastevere and saw this place was full with many stickers in the door from yelp and trip advisor. We waited some minutes and the table was ready. The plates are huge, the service was great and the wine too. We could not even get to the desserts because we were so full! We loved and will be back when we visit Rome again. Ate dinner here on a Sunday evening at 8:30 pm. We had a reservation, but there were a few open tables. We started with the fried artichoke, a Roman classic. Not sure I'm a huge fan of fried artichokes, but it was good to try. We then ordered the gnocchi pomodoro and the carbonara. YUM! Wow. This was our first meal in Rome, and let me tell you.. it was as great as you'd think. I will preface this by saying, I am not much of a lasagna fan. My spouse and I are typically just pasta eaters. That said, my spouses needed up ordering lasagna figuring it may be different in Rome. We came to Da Massi in Trastevere for our last night in Rome with our nearly 2-year old son, looking for a last good meal before the next leg of our trip, and wanting some seafood for a change from the more typical Roman fare we'd been eating. We couldn't have been more pleased! We ordered the fried anchovies as an appetizer. They were delicious, fried perfectly and just mildly salty. For our mains, my wife ordered the seafood risotto, which was full of clams, shrimp and mussels. I was unsure exactly what I wanted and our waiter Daniel recommended the prawn risotto. I'm SO glad I listened to him, the dish was delicious! Perfectly cooked and incredibly rich, but delicate at the same time. It was almost 8pm when we sat down and knowing our son was on the border of meltdown, Daniel was especially attentive towards us and our little one, which we really appreciated. They say Italians love children and Daniel epitomized this. Great food and great service in a great neighborhood, made for a wonderful final meal. We had heard good things about the food found in this neighborhood, so without a reservation, we went looking for a quick meal and a famous fried artichoke. Unfortunately, we were quick to learn artichokes were out of season. Whomp whomp. That being said, it is a neat little ristorante. We had the pasta carbonara and the gnocchi. Both were very good. The service was better than most Italian stops and the menu provided many options. We sat at a table on the street and enjoyed all the activity and people watching. It was my partner's 50th birthday in the capital city of the country of his ancestry so the pressure was on to find a place where he could be assured a good meal. After agonising a bit, and checking out a number of places on various websites, I found Da Massi and thought it would fit the bill nicely, though I was not sure we'd get in, since it was a Saturday evening. We reached Trastevere shortly after 7:30pm, and found the restaurant easily--it's a short walk from the Sisto Bridge past numerous very touristy-looking places before you get to Via della Scala, and Da Massi is a few shops up from the corner. While I was a bit concerned about the display of pasta, and the bilingual menu outside, I threw caution to the wind and decided we'd see if we could get in. Inside, the friendly host assured us he had a table for two, and we were seated right away. The menu is expansive, with loads of tempting items across the spectrum. My partner has a thing for gnocchi, so that was certainly going to be on the menu for us, and I have a thing for artichokes, but alas, artichoke season was over. However, the waiter advised us, they did have fresh porcini mushrooms, which could be had in several ways, including with clams as a topping for gnocchi, which sounded good to me, so we both ended up having gnocchi (the other order was carbonara, which I had never had as a sauce for gnocchi). Both dishes were excellent, but the one with the porcini and clams was transcendent. I have rarely had a dish that I enjoyed as much as this one, with the only thing I would nitpick about it being that the clams could have been cleaned a bit better, as there was a decent amount of grit in the dish. For our mains we chose osso buco romana and saltimbocca alla romana, two quintessentially Roman dishes, and both of them excellent. I had surreptitiously asked if they could bring us some limoncello after our meal as a way to mark the birthday (but without candles, or singing, which would have gone over like a lead balloon) and they did so with flourish and charm (an no attention-grabbing shenanigans that my partner would have killed me for). It was an ideal evening in every way, and we left very happy that we stopped in. Judging by the scenes we saw at the other tables, our experience did not appear to be an outlier in any way. Oh my goodness, Da Massi, we loved you. My sister and I came here on our first day in Rome while waiting to check into our lodging, and we were graciously accommodated, giving us a big corner table so we could stow our luggage. The staff was incredibly friendly, sociable, and gave excellent recommendations. The ambiance is lovely, it feels very tucked away from the busy street, and feels very homey. A good mix of Italians & non-Italians eating here as well. The food was so amazing, we ended up coming back a few nights later! The bruscetta, with thick tomato slices and lots of olive oil, was divine. The wine selection was lovely, and we tried a few bottles over our two visits here. The tiramisu was so good we got it both times we came here! But what stands out the most, was that I ate the best pasta I've ever had in my life at this restaurant (and I ate my way through pasta in Italy like it was my job!) Tagliolini al tartufo, homemade pasta with zucchini, sheep cheese, truffle, cream, and ham was the most delicious pasta dish I've ever had in my life. So creamy, rich, and savory- I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. The best part? It was only 10 euro. When I return to Rome, I will return to Da Massi & my sweet sweet tagliolini al tartufo. read more

Enjoyed a fantastic meal for our last night in Rome. Located in the heart of Trastavere, there was a ton of people walking around and enjoying the town. We waited around 20 minutes for a table at 9:30pm, since we did not have a reservation. The restaurant was packed full of locals. The owner was outside and stayed and talked with us. He was very nice and spoke decent english, telling us about his travels to Los Angeles and Las Vegas the previous year. What we ate: - Traditional Antipasti (cold cuts and mozarella) - Porcini w/ tagliatelle - Spaghetti a la Carbonara - 1L house wine Everything was delicious, and the service was great. Love this place. Authentic Italian homemade cuisine. Came across it as we were walking and the host is from the family that owns the restaurant. Majority if not all the food was home made. Tasty and very friendly people. Offered a good German beer "Kloster Scheyern" and a good Italian one called "Angelo Poretti." 2 of the desserts were homemade by the waiter's wife! We were trying to get into another restaurant in the area but it was completely booked for the evening. Da massi was able to get us right in, so we gave it a try. Both pasta dishes we ordered were very good and pasta was very fresh. We had a liter of the house wine and for house wine, it was good. We had the bruschetta for our app and it was delicious. Very simple and different from what we get in the states. It was thick slices of tomato on crusty italian bread with fresh basil and olive oil. The tomatoes were delicious! So fresh and flavourful! Highly recommend the bruschetta if you love tomatoes. My husband doesn't like tomatoes at home in the US, but even he said this was delicious. I feel bad leaving a negative review when so many people seemed to have great meals here, but I have to share my experience. I ordered the seafood risotto for dinner and came down with a murderous case of food poisoning the next day. I hadn't eaten anything else that day, so... process of elimination. Even if that hadn't happened, I wouldn't recommend Da Massi. Everything about our meal was miserable, from the service (our waiter seemed annoyed that we were alive) to the quality of the food (stale bread is always a bad sign) to the hokey decor (there's a replica of the Mouth of Truth on the wall). Maybe we just caught them on a really bad night. But I wouldn't chance it. There are so many other great restaurants in the area. read more

The food and also the whole atmosphere were authentic. Da Massi is not a typical tourist restaurant. The quantity of the dishes was just right, no one of us left hungry.
