Had an excellent experience at this restaurant during our vacation in Rome. It's kind of in the back in an alley but the vibe wasn't touristy (we were tourists), which is always interesting to experience. The service was top notch. The servers were very nice, attentive, and pleasant. The food was also some of the better food we had while in the touristy areas in Rome. Everything came out in a timely manner and tasted good. There were many locals dining when we were there also, which is a good thing. We didn't call for reservations but I'd recommend doing so as it can get filled up quickly from what I observed while we were there. Prices were reasonable and the portion sizes were good. Definitely check out this restaurant for a pleasant dining experience if you're vacationing in this area of Rome. read more

This is such a nice, small, quaint, friendly restaurant with terrific food. Not touristy at all! Our reservations were at 8pm. When we arrived there was one other table occupied. In the next 20 minutes the place was full. I liked that most of the guests were locals. Once we ordered they brought complimentary Prosecco and Ham Spread. We then enjoyed the blossoms stuffed and wrapped in bacon, pasta with oxtail, pasta with lard cheeks, tripe in a red sauce and baked fish with a white sauce. My husband also ordered Grappa and Tiramisu. Needless to say we were stuffed but the food was delicious and the service impeccable. read more

This restaurant is a must!! The meal, flavors and hospitality left me in pure awe. We were a group of 4 in search of polenta and in our search, we stumbled upon this amazing restaurant. First, we were given complimentary prosecco and tuna cakes in a delicate tomato sauce, then were served a basket of homemade bread which contained fresh polenta sticks. I ordered the steak which came with 2 sauces, a gorgonzola and honey mustard. Both were delicious. We also had the seafood risotto, spaghetti and linguine with squash blossom. Each dish was delicately flavored. Accompanied by all the food was a 2012 Brunello, which paired perfectly. We finished with the tiramisu. It was light and flavorful. The dinner experience will be truly unforgettable. The food was light, yet filling. This meal brought immediate happiness and smiles filled the room. The service was top notch. Someone we met on a Colosseum tour recommended this restaurant as it was near our apartment in Piazza Navono. We checked it out on TripAdvisor and decided to make reservations for the next night. We are so glad we did! From the moment we walked in we were greeted warmly by a beautiful waitress and seated immediately since we had reservations. The menu was small compared to most restaurants in Rome which I thought was nice break from the gastric chaos you encounter usually. We ordered several appetizers and really enjoyed the Roman style artichokes. We had several pastas and bottles of wine as well and everything was delicious. This was definitely the best overall meal we had in Rome. The service was also by far the best we encountered on our entire 10 day trip in Italy. We were also given a free after dinner shot of grappa. How can you complain? This is a great place for good food, service and upscale and romantic atmosphere. A must when in Rome. read more

We chose this restaurant as our Saturday night meal. The reservation was made through yelp and our table was ready when we arrived. We ordered 2 glasses of wine, 1 starter dish (pasta) and 2 mains (beef and catch of the day). The service was very pleasant and we loved the pasta and wine. However we were pretty confused with the mains. First, the beef was about 5 oz., without any sides (except greens). Therefore, ordering sides at additional charge is a must. Second, the fish was unbelievably expensive. We travel a lot and quite often order catch of the day. And I've never had to pay €70 for a whole fish (sea bream, to be exact) in my life before. The menu says €9 per 100 gr. but logically one does not expect a normal sized bream to weight 750-800 gr. We therefore felt ripped for the first time since we moved to Europe. Given the pricing policy and lack of enthusiasm of flavours, I can not recommend this restaurant. read more

This was our favorite meal in Rome! From the first bite to the last, everything was amazing! They started us off with a little ball of some sort of cheese that was fried. We had 2 starters - octopus on mashed potatoes and zucchini flowers with mozzarella inside and wrapped in bacon. My husband and I each had the rack of lamb with roasted potatoes. My 21 yr old had pasta with black truffles and my 15 yr old had cacio e peppe. Desserts were creme brule, trés leche and a tart. The owner then treated us to a bit of limoncello and chocolate chip cookie bites. All was just mind blowing! Service was fantastic as well. The waiter was also very knowledgeable about the wine list. There are only a few moderately priced wines, but the white we got from Montepulciano was crisp and fun. I'd recommend as it's quiet and hidden but right in a central location. We came here based on TripAdvisor reviews also (October 2011), and I think it needs some Yelp love too. Hands down my favorite meal in Rome and my dish was one of my personal favorites of all time. First off, it is a little hard to find, but don't let that stop you - we thought the alley ended but there was a slight zig zag and we found it, so a hotel map is sufficient. We didn't have reservations so got there when it opened and they had no problems seating us. Ambiance was very romantic yet fairly simple. Everyone was friendly. Their homemade olive oil for dipping was amazing! I got one of the specials, a gnocchi with some sea bass in a light orange-y sauce that makes me salivate just thinking about it as I type. Best gnocchi ever, so light and fluffy and unlike any I've ever had. In fact, I ordered the dish because I love sea bass and not a big fan of gnocchi because it tends to make me disgustingly full. Yes, I ate the entire plate except I had to share some with the new hubby. I swear I had a stupid smile on my face with each bite. The sauce is what really made the dish. I would have licked the plate if I could. Hubby got a quail dish, very good also, but I think my gnocchi was the star of the night. We didn't have much room for dessert but they gave us complimentary cookies that were delicious. Plus, the prices were very reasonable for the type of restaurant and quality of food. I hadn't scoped a restaurant for a Saturday night dinner and the family was very concerned, so during our pit stop back at the apartment I started trolling the review sites. After some looking I kept coming back to a 5 * (!!) restaurant (on another review site ) that happened to be um, right next door to our flat...so we went for it! So lucky we did, what a gem. Al Duello was so wonderful. My daughter and I ran down to look at the menu and while we were peering in, a darling young woman opened the door to tell us that they didn't open until 7 pm which was fine--we asked for a 7:30 reservation which she kindly took down. At 7:30 we left the apartment and went downstairs and into the restaurant. She remembered us and showed us to a table. I am always interested to see who else is in the restaurant, and it was nice that both Italians and tourists were there. Like the other reviews say, by 8 pm all of the tables were full. We had a delicious dinner, accompanied by a Cutizzi Greco di Tufo Feudi de San Gregorio (€22) which we had been drinking just the night before in Positano. This sweet little restaurant is definitely worth seeking out, you will feel like a local and dine like one too! read more

I was told about this restaurant from my friend from New York who said he had a great time here. I'm so glad I took his advice to get a reservation here. We came at 2:45pm right before the kitchen closed so we were glad we made it. The waiter, who I think was the manager, took care of us and gave us some complimentary prosecco and seabass mouse on bread to start us off. He then gave us some truffle specials and recommendations. We got the Calamaretti di Mazara del Vallo con tortino di riso nero venere, the Fiore di zucca, spaghetti carbonara, spaghetti alla matriciana, and Cavatelli. All were delicious! At the end of the meal, we received some cookies on the house. All in all a really good representation of Roman dishes. read more

A gem of a restaurant in Rome! We discovered this wonderful restaurant while looking for a nice place to eat in Rome. Upon arriving, we were greeted warmly by one of the owners. The setting was comfortable, yet very intimate. I enjoyed perusing the wine list - to which the owner was very knowledgeable, suggesting a Super Tuscan wine - a 2010 Guidalberto Tenuta San Guido - which was delicious! For appetizers, we had the Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Squash Blossom - simply wonderful! From there, we moved on to dinner - we had the Filet of Beef, and the Tagliatelli - again, simply amazing! Finally, the dessert. I had the Creme Brûlée, and my wife had the Tiramisu - wonderful, and fantastic! For us, this was simply the best meal in Rome...so much so, we went back a second night! read more

After going on a food tour today and eating some of the best pizza and pasta and gelato in Rome I was quite full but not that hungry when I went to this restaurant. nonetheless, this was definitely the best food I've had in Rome so far and I've been here for several days. We made reservations here on the strength of the TripAdvisor reviews and we were not disappointed. This place is a bit hard to find at night but with map in hand we did ok. It has a contemporary décor and wonderful service. Both waitresses were pleasant, spoke English well, and cultivated a relaxing and enjoyable experience. The complimentary prosecco set the mood, and homemade crostini were salty and delicious. My husband had the pork with lard (can't remember the name) that melted in your mouth. I had a roasted quail special which was served butterflied and seasoned with rosemary and roasted potatoes. It was divine. We finished with creme brulee and a special millefoglie with strawberries and chocolate, and my husband had a complimentary liqueur. It was a supremely relaxing and delicious dinner, and though pricey, we felt it was appropriate given the quality of the food. This was one of our very favorite meals on our tour of Italy. Al Duello has some honest Roman food, you'll find cacio e peppe, Roman pork, and some good carbonara if you want something on the richer side. I'd be sure to try a truffles plate of you like shrooms or try the Roman pork as they seem to have a very particular version somewhat their own. read more

We were fortunate enough to walk into this restaurant while wandering around Rome. We arrived shortly before closing, and the owner and waiter welcomed us, and went out of their way to make sure we had a good time. They did not rush us at all. The food was probably the best we had in all of Rome, and we ate at many different restaurants. We were a large party of 9, and everyone loved their dish. Just when you think you've reached a dead end, you come upon a magnificent little restaurant. It was the final meal of our vacation and it was nice to get a well-curated mix of items. We found this restaurant just by wandering in the neighborhood of our hotel. It is fantastic! First off, the wait staff was charming. The interior is a study in simple elegance, and the playlist included an eclectic mix of jazz and vocal standards from the '60s. Now for the food. We ordered an eggplant pie to start with. It came as a large slice of eggplant baked in a Parmesan and olive oil and tomato sauce that just melted in your mouth. Next was a potato and leak cream soup with toasted slices of green onions on top. Scrumptious. Our main course, the spaghetti carbonara, came with big chunks of bacon, artichoke hearts and Parmesan cheese. The portions were generous and the prices very reasonable. This restaurant - tucked away on a little side street - was one of the loveliest dinners we had on our trip to Rome. The quite and small place owned by two sisters and filled with subtle Caravaggio-themed decor is a welcome relief from the touristy joints with waiters on the street trying to hustle you in. The eggplant pie appetizer was phenomenal, made of layers of eggplant and cheesy goodness and the prawn scampi pasta was incredible. But nothing beat the chocolate souffle, the absolute best I've had in my life. To top it all off, the service was lovely and attentive. read more

We stumbled across this place in the little street of Italy and it looked nice but there was no people inside. They had all the signs outside with trip advisor and yelp ratings which usually is a good sign. The service was average. The pasta was horrible it was very oily and salty. It is a shame to cook their traditional meal, which is pasta, the way that they did. It is Italy. Al Duello was definitely one of the best Italian-cuisine restaurants we dined at during our stay in Rome. All the dishes that we tried were great and lived up to our expectations based on previous reviews. The restaurant is also conveniently located at a walking distance from major attractions. For instance, we walked to the restaurant after visiting Piazza del Popolo (13 min walk) and after our dinner we continued to Trevi Fountain (9 min walk) and ended our night with a delicious gelato (the italian word for ice-cream) at the well-known San Crispino Gelateria (also recommended; 2 min walk from Trevi). However, be aware that Al Duello is a relatively small restaurant and can get easily full. We arrived early (around 6:30 pm) and found an empty table, but companies arriving just 30-45 min later had to come back after two hours since all the other tables were already booked. So it is wise to book a table beforehand. Buon appetito! read more

UNDERWHELMING! I've traveled in Rome and throughout Italy many times, and this was one of the most underwhelming meals I've ever had here. The menu is trying way too hard and just doesn't deliver. My husband and I ordered first courses, and the food was so bland that we opted not to order anything else and left hungry. The entire experience is off at this place. The ambiance is that of a pretentious American restaurant, and the same 8-10 songs play over and over again in a loop. The wine menu is also problematic. We asked for the house red, and the waitress brought us a bottle of wine that was $36 euro. I asked if it was the house wine, and she said no, there's no house wine. The menu also shows only full bottles. I pushed back against this, and the waitress said they actually do sell half bottles, though they aren't listed (they do not sell glasses of wine). We ordered a half bottle, and it was also bland. I definitely will not return here and cannot recommend it to others. Perhaps we caught them on a bad night, but our entire experience from start to finish was just completely underwhelming. read more
