It's been three yers, so it's time for a brief update. First, and happily for all, Da Capo has survived the worst of the pandemic. And they still are doing well under the circumstances (staff shortages here as elsewhere in the industry). Their outdoor patio has been delightful in the warm wether, and now that we're heading into winter the interior is appropriately arranged. Our dinner there last week was mostly good: the food remains tasty, thoughtfully prepared (the swordfish was fresh and cooked right for us) and fairly priced. Service was a bit slow, but we understand why. Most regrettable was a rude and thoughtless couple behind us who chatted on their cell phone with the speaker turned on through part of the meal. They stopped moments before our server asked them to do so. Maybe we need a rule barring use of cell phones during dining hours? read more

Consistently great food keeps them packed most every day. Their pizza is the best in the Litchfield - Torrington area. Fantastic crust and always done right, just as long as you ask for no oregano when you order (unless you like the slight bitter flavor that adds) otherwise they sometimes sprinkle it on top just before serving it. Have had many of their entree dishes as well and usually very pleased. Be sure to call ahead for reservations on Friday and Saturday due to the regular crowds they get. read more

For the very high prices you should get a salad. Even though veal is in the menu and chicken Marsala is too they would not do veal Marsala. Ordered the chicken and it was chicken and gravy. No Marsala flavor. Other waitress thought the screaming kid was awesome! We left with headaches. Hadn't been here for a couple of years and now I remember why. Not coming back. Terrible service. Dirty martini was literally served with remnants of olives floating in the glass. Don't they know how to strain olive juice? Wait staff never asked if we needed anything after bringing our food. We needed catsup for hamburger served without it. Staff never checked on us. I won't be back again. I just got an order delivered through Seamless. Almost $40 (including tip) for a calzone & wings. Calzone was waaaayyyy underfilled. We asked that the wings be "all flats"...we got both. We ordered them because they said they were double fried. Not so much. Also, the sauce was supposed to be Buffalo garlic & was just a very mild Buffalo. I really hate to leave such a harsh review, but that's too much money for food that got thrown away. read more

Our favorite restaurant in our area. Never displeased. Always tasty. Good, honest portions. Wait staff is mostly excellent.

How much did we enjoy our lunch at Da Capo? Well, for under $27 we had a delicious meal with great service and enough food to bring home leftovers. We'd been to Da Capo in Avon half a dozen times, but this was my first visit to the original location in Litchfield. It's somewhat smaller than the Avon version, but there was plenty of room in the dining room for our 1:00 visit on a Saturday. Our server, Bernard, was the model of efficiency and friendly professionalism. We ordered three selections from the lunch menu- an appetizer, a salad, and a Panini. I love mussels, and have to say this was one of the very best mussel dishes I've ever had. I ordered mine "very spicy". Da Capo delivered a big serving of super fresh mussels in a fiery broth of fresh tomatoes, razor thin garlic slices, and red pepper flakes with two crostini toasts. For $9 it was a great value. My $6 Da Capo salad was a real winner too- a delicious plate of mixed greens, roasted peppers, grilled red onions, grape tomatoes, radishes, and Gran Padano cheese in a balsamic vinaigrette. My wife's Italiano Panini ran $10 for a great sandwich of fresh mozzarella, arugula, prosciutto, parmesan cheese and pesto served with a big portion of french fries. I've dined here several times and the food is consistently good, as it is in the Avon location. Two recent visits (to both locations) baffled me as to why they are burning strongly scented candles in their dining rooms? It interferes with the aromatic smells of the food. At the Avon location, I mentioned it and the host that day removed the candle. I mentioned it to the waitress as we arrived in Litchfield (the candle was right at the area where you are welcomed). She told me they burned it because "it's an old building". And instead of seating us as far as possible away from it, she put us as close as anyone could get. The dining room was basically empty, so it wasn't an issue of no tables available. And it wasn't "prime time". Poor service from this gal. After we finished our meal, I placed an order for pizza to go. The check was dropped before we got the pizza, which was fine. But we couldn't get anyone to take our payment after the pizza was brought out. Three different people told us our waitress "would be right with us". When she finally showed up, she said she thought she had already "cashed us out". I think she took offense at my comment on the candle and decided we were "difficult". Or, she's just not a very good server. Anyway .... the food is always good. But please, stop smelling up the place with candles! Oh man...not good. When I tell people i have a house in Connecticut (and that I worked for a couple of years as a breadbaker / pizzaolo), they invariably say "well you must be eating some incredible pizza." Sadly, in my experience, its been quiet the opposite. Now I'm aware of the existence of some decent pizza in Torrington proper and that New Haven is famous for pizza, but the product that is slung in the Litchfield County area is generally awful. Da Capo is the latest sad entry to that club. Pizza is the worst commercial flour, bread-like, skimpy. The crust doesn't know if it wants to be a flatbread or a NY-style crust. Tasteless. I ordered the white pie with garlic, mozz and ricotta. The toppings were OVERWHELMING and not very tasty. The garlic was burned and that taste permeated the entire pie. The ricotta and mozz were slathered on to give that burnt garlic a sludge in which to live. Ordered a Caesar salad. Big mistake. We didn't touch it but for the anchovies I ordered on top (to put on the pizza after I scraped off the cheese). The salad was a beige, cheese and dressing laden bowl. BUT THE CROUTONS? WTF. These were out-of-a-box, seasoned with paprika or some hideous old-bay mix. Perfectly cuboid, sandy, no rustic texture. So to repeat, the salad layers were: 1. shredded dry mozz (gross) 2. 1 cup of caesar sauce/dressing 3. disgusting sandy spiced croutons 4. lots of white, sad looking lettuce. If this was 1997, it would be prime time for a Gordon Ramsey takeover. A simple caesar salad.... lovely green leaves of romaine, a simple egg-based dressing lightly applied, hint of lemon, croutons from day-old fresh bread...DELICIOUS. The pizza....I can buy better frozed pizza at the market. It's called Wave Hill i think. The service is friendly (they took the salad back). The ambience is kinda cute but for the too-loud and cheesy pop music. read more

I had the pasta with Bolognese sauce, it was good nothing too special. They did have 1 piece of bread for each person at the table, could of gave us extra. The food was pricey and did not come with a salad, in which I was disappointed. The service was ok, so I just left a small tip. The last was the ambiance an Italian theme but mini blinds next to our table were very dusty, and when the service tried to move the blinds down because of the sunset dust fell on our table. read more

DeCapo chips were decent. Entree-eggplant rollatini was very tiny sitting on a massive mound of spaghetti. Sauce was just ok.Entree- penne a la vodka was congealed and just ok. Entree- Caesar salad with steak just ok. Appetizer- ricotta toast was fair. Service-she was nice, but unfortunately we ordered the eggplant chips as soon as we sat down and had to ask about them and it took almost 40 minutes. The salad I ordered arrived being the wrong salad and she said it was her fault, but it was not what I wanted at all. Waited for nothing getting the wrong salad plus it delayed the entrees Overall, not a good experience all around. Won't be dining there again. read more

When did we dine: On a Friday evening at about 5:30. What was good: service was good, wine and drinks were good. Their home-made cannoli was really good. Most places say there cannoli's are homemade but most of the time they make only the filling and buy the shells. They make the sheels to order and fill them in house. This was the best part of our meal. What needs improvement: Bar was very slow. 15 minutes to get renewed drink although they apologized for the slowness. The food was disappointing. My wife got the fish and I got the lasagna. It seemed like the lasagna was either frozen and reheated or something was not fresh and I am not that picky about my lasagna. They totally dried out the Mediterranean Sea bass beyond what most people will like. Bottom Line: This is still a nice restaurant to enjoy i nice dinner and in all fairness, we did not tell them that the lasagna and fish were not the best since we were with friends and wanted to just enjoy our time together. If they can watch cooking the fish and maybe consider ensuring the lasagna is fresher then it is well with the trip. read more

Why is the average rating only 3.5 stars for this place? We are now living here full time and used to live in NYC before the pandemic. We came in for dinner on a recommendation and are so happy we listened! The restaurant is cute, a nice Italian-American style sit down, and causal dress is okay. The cocktails and food were really great. We had blood orange margaritas, fried zucchini and eggplant chips with a delicious yogurt sauce, the pear and cheese salad, rigatoni bolognese and penne alla vodka with large shrimp. SO GOOD. The food was prepared quickly and the service very friendly and prompt - Melissa is a great server. Also the portions are generous so it was nice to take some home for tomorrow. Something goes wrong every time. Wait staff are rude, they'll ignore you for a long time until your take out order that is sitting on the table the entire time gets cold, hang up the phone (has literally happened after months of getting it every week) and just this past week they told us to contact slice when they didn't have an item available that you could order on the app (they don't even know how to use the app they send you to to order). Food here deserves a 5, staff deserves a 2. At no point did we ever feel welcome to be here, almost like they're doing us a favor by letting us dine. Water came efficiently. Beverages right behind. Then we ordered an app that came with the food, no big deal, buuuuutttt my salad came after my meal was dropped in front of me, so I pushed the meal aside and flagged down a bus boy to bring me a dressing. I asked for a vinaigrette but he brought me straight vinegar... again, not a big deal (the waitress never asked what kind of dressing we'd like in the 1st place). By the time I got to my food, it was cold (especially the shrimp). Then I realized my seafood dish was suppose to come over linguini but there was. no linguini on my plate. The server wasn't around, so I got up and tracked her down to ask for the linguini. When we arrived, we were starving having been apple picking, and corn mazing... we were very excited about the bread basket, and those little rolls were delish! When the waitress came by we were going to ask for more but she said something like " you don't want anymore bread right? you're food's almost ready,". That statement talked us right out of asking for more bread. Later in the meal, we asked the food runner for more bread but never got it. When the waitress did fly by she'd say do you need anything else. The word else is off putting. My normal 30% tipping turned into 18%, which She seriously didn't deserve. Our waiter forgot when we asked him for more water, Parmesan, cheese, and a dessert menu. We had to remind him on all three accounts. Pizza was pretty good... We have been enjoying this restaurant for years with its charming location, exceptional food and friendly service!! It occurred to me I should offer a review with my thanks and support. A reservation in the summer months is recommended but there is seating available inside complete with an area offering Covid panels and outside tables on the deck. Wine selection offers excellent Italian as well as CA choices and is reasonably priced. Peroni beer and local brews on tap!! Warm freshly baked rolls are set on the table with olive oil. My husband and I always start with a salad and opt for the Toscana to share. Fresh greens, olives, Tasty artichokes with the stem(!), house-made polenta croutons & roasted peppers. YUM!! Main course we usually split as well but this time we opted for individual meals of mussels. Couldn't resist mussels red with a homemade sauce loaded with slivers of garlic and herbs. Superb flavors we asked to be served over Angel Hair pasta. I was in a food trance as I savored the tasty bivalves smothered in steaming red sauce. The flavors were quite delicious and we usually don't bother to take leftover pasta but the dish was memorable enough to warrant taking it home. Desert offers a delicious tiramisu and other choices. Service is friendly and attentive. Be prepared to sit back and relax it may take a bit longer to freshly prepare your meal on weekends, but while busy the wait is worth it. 1st time here and off my bucket list, Wasn't too bad and Wasn't too great either. So let me start by saying our waitress was absolutely wonderful she was so nice and on top of everything. I ordered the Spaghetti and Meatballs and my other half ordered Steak,with some drinks. I got a Strawberry limeode and he got an Old fashioned, mine was more lime then strawberry it was OK, I actually liked his old fashion it was like a walnut brandy with a hint of a fruit. Now the food my spaghetti was delicious but the Meatballs I hated they were very peppery fresh you can tell but absolutely too peppery. His Steak was supposed to be medium rare but came out medium well which he didn't complain about he actually liked it that way better but it was so plain I had to taste his and it had nothing no spice whatsoever, the fries were absolutely fresh and tasty loved those but the asparagus again they over did it with the pepper. The place was absolutely beautiful nice and clean, bathroom was clean but the toilet paper holder is holding up with duct tape lol. I would give this place a 3 1/2 stars if I could though. read more

Nicely done! Phoned earlier in the day with a good sized order for take out -- handled professionally and with great courtesy! Pickup went flawlessly; everything was just as ordered. Just a bit surprised that the DaCapo chips were as salty as they were --- and rolls were burnt. But, pizza's were good, calamari and salads fresh and just as expected. I don't even know where to start. I guess I'll preface with the ONLY reason this place is getting one star is because our server was an absolute rockstar. The rest of our experience was AWFUL. I booked a reservation here a good 5-6 months ago, for a party of 20-25 for my little sisters bridal shower. I had mine here last year, and it was great - cute space, great service etc. So when it came time for hers, easy choice. I was led to believe I would be given the same space as before, which is 90% of the reason I chose to book here. The day of arrives, and I'm told that we will be hosted in the bar area, the area I was promised wasn't available for parties smaller than 50 (my shower had about 15 people at it, make that make sense lol) The manager on duty basically laughed at us for even suggesting it. The space they provided was small, dark, cramped and not private AT ALL - they kept the bar open for regular guests, and even one of the owners parked it at the bar to eat his lunch, in the middle of the shower. When I tried to explain that this wasn't what I was promised and it wasn't going to be good enough for our needs, the same manager on duty was extremely rude, basically a "too bad, so sad" situation, offered zero solutions, walked away from me while I was still talking multiple times, and was openly making rude comments to other workers about our party in our earshot. They tried to tell me that we were only a party of 10 to down play my frustrations (we were a party of 19 in the end) and the management added a 20% mandatory gratuity to EVERY CHECK, including my grandmothers to go food...when the mandatory gratuity was supposedly for groups larger than 12. Beyond disappointing doesn't even begin to cover it. If it weren't for our server (I can't remember her name but the girl who worked the bridal shower on Sunday 9/17) being an absolute gem, giving amazing and prompt service, the entire day would have been ruined. She was the only one that even tried to apologize for the screw up, ran around our party AND other tables in her section with ease and was perfectly professional and so so nice. The rest of you, shame on you. Horrible management, rude owners, will never be coming here for anything again. read more

Until my last visit, Da Capo was my #1 favorite local restaurant to take my out of town guests. Friendly warmth, outstanding homemade quality food with personal attention to individual needs. At my most recent visit 7/30/23, there was a new upscale menu, with an upscale increase in price, and less flexibility to make changes. While cheerful & engaging, our (possibly new) server messed up my order, twice. While they kindly removed the charge, my meal (salad & pizza) and experience was disappointing. My family members, however, loved their (hearty Italian) meals. We had reserved a table on the deck, where it was beautiful. After the sun went down, they lit tall fire tubes that gave off light and some warm. A very pretty setting. read more

The girl on the phone said she would get the manager- another girl came on the phone, said the manager was busy, told me we had to go through SLICE to fix the issue, never said how to contact SLICE or what would happen to our money already paid to Dacapo. We were told we could not come pick up another of the same order that they had forgotten to include in our take out order. Never apologized, manager never came on phone, very rude and unhelpful, refused to take responsibility, refund or replace missing $28 pasta dish even though we offered several times to come back to pick one up. Roomy, clean and tasteful interior, great bar, fun staff, personable owner - Along with Anthony's of Oakville, the original Pepe's in New Haven - This place is my top three for THE BEST PIZZA IN CONNECTICUT. True thin crust, fresh pomodoro tomato sauce and fresh buffalo mozzarella with strips of basil grown in the back garden...simply delicious. Everything I've ever had here has been amazing. I almost can't believe there is an italian restaurant this good in the middle of nowhere like this! Try the eggplant parm, the deCapo chips, and the chocolate mouse pie! (also makes a great cappuccino!) If you come in more than once, there's a good chance the owner, (who wanders and hangs out with your table if you talk to him) will get to know you and might even send out some free treat for you to try. I've been here numerous times over the years and I usually always enjoy myself. They have a pretty decent menu to choose from although last time I went it was different. I think the restaurant might be under new ownership or something. I really think their food quality and taste have gotten a lot better. The last time I went I tried something new; the gnocchi. I was a little skeptical because I said it came in just a olive oil sauce which is different since most gnocchi has a red or cream sauce. I was so pleasantly surprised. It was delicious!
