For the price, it's yummy and a good portion. People don't seem to understand basic business principles. Berkeley raises taxes and rent goes up constantly. D'yar was one of the first places I ate at in Berkeley when I first arrived as a freshman and I have gone back at least once a month ever since, sometimes once a week. Their falafels are warm and cripsy and their chicken kabob/shwarma plates are so good and they give you a really big portion. I've liked pretty much everything I have tried, but my go tos are the falafel salad, chicken shwarma plate and the falafel deluxe wrap. Prices have gone up a lot in the past few years.... it's not as affordable as it used to but there's some cheat codes. Chicken shawerma salad and ask for extra pita bread, thats $11 but it will last you 2 very filling meals. After eating nearly every type of food you can imange on this trip... The bf suggested having Mediterranean for dinner. Found this cute little place just down the way from where we were hanging out at. When we walked in, the place wasnt to busy (which was nice, who wants a busy restaurant when you are hungry). After looking over the menu i decided on getting the Chicken Shawarma Wrap(Chicken, wrapped in a pita bread with veggies), pickled vegetables on the side, and a drink (Only draw back on getting a drink from here is they only have a soda machine and no ice tea or other kind of drinks, which is a total bummer for their customers who dont like soda) total for that was $4.99 plus tax. If you wanted to add fries or rice it was an extra $1.99. The person who took our order was nice, he gave me our receipt and said our number would be called. Found a cozy spot by the window to sit and people watch on Telegraph Ave. (FYI watch out for the sharp edges on the sides of the table, my poor elbow and arm got attack several times!!). Even though this is a Mediterranean place dont expect to hear that type of music, instead one of the food preppers busted out his ipod and was playing a mix of hiphop and contemporary music. At one point he even got into a song and was singing as he was cooking, which i thought showed another side of this place. They know how to have fun while working!! They really take the time to make everything fresh and right the first time it seems like. Finally, our order was up and ready for us to pick up. The warp was pretty good (on the larger side). Only thing was, they are kind of stingy on giving you alot of chicken. All in all, this pita filled me up along with stealing some bites from the bf's yummi looking plate too!!! The "Chicken Shawarma Snack" is one of the most delicious affordable meals around. Their fries are perfect, the garlic sauce is amazing, and the chicken/wrap is juicy and tender. I don't even normally like pickles in wraps/sandwiches, but it works, and the hot sauce makes it even better. The atmosphere isn't nice (really small and doesn't feel very clean) but I'm rating them five stars anyway based on the taste/affordability/quality of the food. Plus, it's Telegraph -- I wouldn't expect any kind of upscale restaurant at Durant & Telegraph, and it's a good deal for the portion sizes. OK, so we came here pretty late, kind of close to closing time, which may have affected the service we received, which was kind sucky, and the food that we got. All I wanted was some tabouleh and pita bread! Although the tabouleh was pretty good compared to others I've tried (my hometown has LOTS of mediterranean food to compare to), they TOTALLY skimmed me on my pita bread! Help a sista out and give me some darn pita bread! They only gave me like 6 slices... which I had to share with two other MEN! and ladies you know that men can eat a lot! so can we, but damn that was not enough pita to go around! :( Sadness.... my friends got some other meals like gyros and etc etc... but at that point I was just sad I didn't have more pita bread to finish my tabouleh. Maybe I should've asked, but I felt bad cause it was close to closing time OR maybe they should've just given us LOTS of pita bread! haha, well hopefully I can give this place another try, maybe during the day time and normal business hours or something. But another thing was they charged my credit card for food I never bought! (long story short, I wanted to pay in cash, changed my mind, used card, then changed my mind again to cash) Plus, there was some language barrier between the guy taking my order and me. This place has a really nice atmosphere, pretty good food, and reasonable prices. Food definitely tastes authentic. I always go here for falafel dishes. It doesn't seem to be much of a sit-down restaurant due to the lack of space. However, it is definitely not good for to-go. One of the reasons this place only gets 3 stars is because food takes FOREVER. I go here whenever I'm craving some good Mediterranean food, but every time I've had to wait a good 30 minutes! :( read more

This is my newest favorite place to grab an afternoon snack close to campus. The Mediterranean foods (falafel and gyros being my favorite) are excellent, and affordable here. Get a falafel wrap with fries! Or, my secret, I will order only a few falafel a la carte (at .50 a piece). I have been here twice and each time severely enjoyed the falafel plate. It's kind of a magical experience. The falafels are crispy, warm and delicious. You also get some wicked good fries, hummus, salad and pitas. All for about $6. My only grievances are the pitas are too small to open and stuff ingredients inside of. Also, they could throw in a little more hummus. Overall though, this meal tickles my palate in all the right ways. read more

I had the lamb and beef gyro plate last night. I was pretty cheap for thte portion I got. The fries were very delicious. However, I thought the meat was very salty. The first few bites were good, like "mmm this is pretty flavorful" and then it just went downhill from there. It was so salty by the end of my plate I was like "oh my god this is so salty". Have been coming here for a while because it's in our neighborhood, but the last few times the people behind the counter have been extremely rude. The food is good but the portions have been shrinking....When my husband and I paid for our 2 meals together, they refused to stamp our "buy 10, 11th is free" card twice because we paid together. After already shoving several dollars into the tip jar, we asked why he wouldn't stamp our card twice, which seems like a reasonable question. The gentleman was so incredibly rude and demeaning, we almost left on the spot. Why was I paying for this guy to be such a jerk to me, over a stupid hole punch in their stupid card?? IF we ever go back, I guess we'll stand in line separately, and pay separately, because for some reason this restaurant does not recognize lunch dates as a equal customers. read more

I used to really love D'yars, it was my favorite restaurant in berkeley, but one day, I was eating a stuffed grape leaf from their mediterranean plate, and bit on something hard. They had somehow managed to get a staple inside of my stuffed grape leaf. Not even a normal staple either, it was one of those thick, industrial staples. I am so glad I caught it in time, because that could have torn my esophagus or something. The bottom line is, their food could have literally killed me or caused serious harm, and when I confronted them about the staple, they just stood there and said nothing. They wouldnt give me my money back or even give me a new stuffed grape leaf. I am very disappointed in their lack of care for their customers. read more

When the size of the plates, the price, and the quality of the food are all added together, Dyar is a tough spot to beat. In an area packed with good restaurants, almost all of which are catering to student budgets, Dyar was hands down my favorite lunch spot when I was a student at Berkeley (I admit that my love for Middle Eastern food makes me somewhat biased). For a light and quick lunch, the shawarma wraps are perfect. If you want something more filling, the shawarma or kabob plates come packed with meat, your choice of rice or French fries, salad, bread, humus and a small side of yogurt. The food is very good and I seriously don't know of a place with portions this big and prices so cheap! I never ordered it, but friends loved the vegetarian plate, a mix of humus, dolmas, falafel, salad and bread. First impression: yet another Mediterranean place. I could've just gone to Sunrise Deli. False. I had the falafel plate. 4 falafels, salad, pita bread, hummus, fries (??). Cool, cool. The sides were typical salad and hummus. The fries looked like they had some seasoning on them. It wasn't enough to give a unique flavor, but it was a start. Fries are fries in enough ketchup. But the falafels. The surprise of the lunch. Though there was only 4, they filled me up and were the sizeable, delicious highlight of the afternoon. Gyro plate. Fries. Extra tahini sauce. $8. Done. The place is small so seating is very limited. Order first and keep your receipt for your number. When your plate is ready, dig in. The gyro was a tad saltier and greasier than I expected it to be, but it had all the flavors there. It did, later on, create a huge amount of gas in my stomach. I was really uncomfortable throughout the day. Honestly the salad on my plate wasn't necessary since it kind of got mushed up with my fries and hummus and ended up being a cluster of hot lettuce . It's nice, however, that your plate comes with your choice of meat, choice of rice or fries, pita, hummus, and salad. The pita is nice and soft. Definitely warm as if it just came out of the oven. My biggest concern was the soda machine. The coke was definitely not coke, a clear carbonated liquid more so. It was unbearable to even sip on it.
