They are extremely racist. My husband and I went to get some dinner our first night in Winthrop. We were seated quickly and then waited for 15-20 minutes. While waiting, we watched a couple who arrived after us get their order taken by an older brunette woman with a ponytail. I went up and asked the hostess about it and she was nice and assured me someone will be out. No one came out. In the meantime the same brunette woman ignored us and served two other couples that arrived after us. At that point the hostess came to us and took our orders. By that point we were extremely disturbed by the service and blatant racism/discrimination. We waited a few more minutes and then left. It was a terrible first dining experience in Winthrop especially considering that this restaurant is highly rated. Do not be fooled. Do not go there! read more

While searching for a place to eat on a journey to Deer Island, I stumbled across this little gem. This is authentic Italy, from the most delicious bread to one of the best meals I've had. My husband and I had a lay over in boston and this was just down the street from our Inn (Winthrop Beach Inn). We had the recommendation from the desk staff to go here only a 8 minute walk. So glad we did, I wanted seafood being in the area and it was delicious had the clams,mussels,shrimp with linguini. So fantastic hit the spot. I am really confused. How did this place end up with so many stars? After the horrid Antonia's experience, we took a ride up the road to Winthrop and stopped at D'Parma. We had been there once before, many moons ago, and we couldn't remember how we liked it. So we took a chance. I will regret that meal forever... Let me start with a couple OK things... 1) It's BYOB. I kind of like that. It's cheaper and you get to drink what you actually want. 2) There's a bunch of weaved baskets all over the ceiling. It's a nice effect. And that's where the good stuff ends. We ordered the eggplant rolls to start. Mushy and flavorless. Waitress brought us over a basket of bread. I tore a piece in half to find a very long blond hair in the middle. (insert retching noises here.) John got the gnocchi which was undercooked and just bland. I got some linguine with this creamy sauce and chicken. BLAH. Gross. I took one bite and I could feel it on it's way to my stomach where it sat like a rock. No flavor. Just a bunch of creamy noodles in a bowl. I couldn't eat it. Oh, but here's the best part! The waitress FINALLY came over to check on us and we said we were ready for the check. She took one look our plates and said,"You didn't like the food?" And I said, "In all honesty, no." That's when she got mad. She said," why didn't you tell me that when I came over to check on you the first time?" That's when I got mad. She never came over to check on us a first time! Went here first time Saturday. When you first walk in you get the feel of loud, suburbian dive, but then...by far and large one of the best Italian food I've had in a long time and and most excellent service. The salmon/chevre bruschetta, antipasto plate were incredible and all authentic. I can't compliment trout w puttanesca sauce enough. Delicious! All the ingredients are crafted together to create these tasty dishes,accompanied with warm crust bread. My boyfriend had veal Marsala which was good, too. Quantty of side pasta was on the small. However, we will definitely be going back to try the other dishes! I would recommend this restaurant to all my family and friends. I have been going to D'Parma for years and I keep coming back, even though It takes me about 35 minutes to get there, and there might be a line when I do! I recently introduced my boyfriend to this place. He was quite impressed, and that says a lot coming from him! Let's just say, he went home with leftovers, and a day later, he actually ate them! He NEVER eats leftovers (I'm serious...ok, maybe pizza, but that's it!) Thus I finally decided to add my review to Yelp! To be honest, I frequently get the same exact thing almost every time I'm here, but I can't help myself....it's just so good! D'Parma's style is to not have everything buried under mounds of cheese or heavy sauces. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but if you frequent the place as much as I do, it's probably not the best idea! Their red sauce ( a definite marinara) is flavorful and compliments a meal instead of covering it up. The alfredo sauces are good as well and don't taste overly "sinful." The eggplant rolls topped with cheese and marinara and are my favorite appetizer, with the mushroom appetizer a close second (served over fresh spinach with a cream sauce and bacon bits!)! The debate in my mind sometimes goes like this...."am I in the mood for red sauce or cream sauce?!" My entree choice is usually the Chicken Sorrentina, a classic chicken cutlet lightly sauteed and then accented by mozzarella and marinara with fresh basil. It is served with a side salad and a side of pasta. Neither of these are huge, but that's ok with me, because at the end of the meal, I'm completely satisfied, and don't feel like I'm in a food coma! I am so incredibly glad I discovered this gem because of Yelp. The staff was attentive and the food was amazing. We were provided with hot, fresh bread and side salads prior to our appetizer arriving. My chicken saltimbocca was absolutely amazing, and you cannot beat the price for this quality of food. If I were to split hairs my only complaint would be that our sautéed mussels came with several empty shells and their prior inhabitants were not present in the broth. I did not mind because they were absolutely delicious, and the leftover broth was perfect for being soaked up by the aforementioned bread! read more

I know there are a lot of good reviews on here, but we've tried this place 3 times since moving to Winthrop 2 years ago and have been very unhappy and disappointed every time. One time we had a server who treated us like she was doing us a favor just to wait on us. The food was mediocre at best. Tonight we ordered a chicken parm sub with extra sauce on the side and a turkey and cheese sub for take out. The turkey and cheese was actually very tasty, but the chicken parm was the worst sub my husband has ever eaten. First, we didn't get the extra sauce on the side, in fact, there was barely any sauce on the sub at all. The chicken was actually thin dried out strips of chicken, covered by thick breading. This is yet another GREAT BYOB establishment. When you walk in, it's very warm, cozy and feels like home. There's a wide variety of salads, entrees and pastas. Upon arrival, you are greeted with warm slightly toasted bread, and the oil is infused with something rather tasty too (maybe crushed red pepper??)I had the grilled shrimp entree which was rather tasty. It started out with a little salad (not way too much, but not too little) with Italian dressing, then the entree came with marinated shrimp (medium sized) and raw spinach with balsamic vinegar atop. The main entree is also accompanied by your choice of fettuccine, ziti or linguine. It was all pretty tasty. Only down fall is that the pop is by the can, and it's 1.50/can. read more

D'Parma's has excellent Itallian sandwiches -- far better than what you can get in the North End -- and the prices are excellent. $5 for a sandwich with fresh-sliced prosciutto and mozzarella is a steal. The people at the counter are really nice on top of it so it's a pleasure going there for take-out. Dinner is good and very reasonable also. Lobster ravioli is so-so with a heavy breacrumb filling and too much cream sauce but a lot of the other choices are very, very good. Again, the people there are super-friendly, the atmosphere is relaxing, and the prices can't be beat. Can't go wrong with D'Parmas. read more

EDIT: I think they have a new chef/cook, or something. The last time I was here, just about a week ago - the food was dredful! There was nothing redeeming about the meal. I tried the previously really good "D'parma Salad" it was no good. I tried my sister's 4 cheese gnocchi, not good. I tried my other sister's special of the day pasta dish. It too was salty and not very good. All the pasta seemed overcooked and the sauces were not what they should have been. ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ I adore this place for many reasons, some of which shall follow: 1) It's a short walk from my Grandma's house. When we are having any sort of family gathering, this is the place we wanna be. It can fit all (sometimes 15 people) of us at one table. 2) It's a BYOB type-a-joint. I love that. Lots and lots of love for that reason. They also don't rush you to get out of there at all, so if you want to sip on your wine and chat (as my family does) it's cool - stay a while. 3) The food is REALLY GOOD. (Perhaps I should have named this reason number one?) Don't fill up on the bread and oil when you get there, you will have a hard time finishing your meal if you do! I have had several dishes from here, usually ordering something new and my sisters and I all share. They have amazing salads and pasta dishes that are not only huge, but really good. 4) If you tell them it's your birthday they bring you a nice slice of Tiramisu and have this recording of the most embarrassing song ever. Just WOW. I honestly have never been to better place than this for Italian food. SKIP THE NORTH END and just come here. They have two locations, and we decided on this one because the other one was packed (apparently). We called beforehand to make sure we had a table and parking was a breeze on a Saturday night surprisingly. First time in the area so I can't say much. We were seated immediately and I noticed that the place was PACKED. It was very homey, but fancy at the same time -great vibe. Our server was patient with us, and I admired that she was very honest when we asked for her opinion on the menu! And I loved that she left us a pitcher of water at the table too!!! Anyway, we ordered four entrees: gnocchi with four cheeses, tortellini with pesto, lobster ravioli, and shrimp scampi. Each entree came with a side salad but the BREAD in the beginning of the meal is already so good! But save your stomach for the entrees because they are HUGE portions. I personally and extremely picky with my gnocchi. A lot of places that I go to, it just has the texture of...mashed potatoes which I really dislike but here, they do a fine job of making it tender and chewy. (Not sure if it's suppose to be that way but it was good!) The tortellini with pesto sauce was one of my favorites of the night. I love tortellini so if you screw this one up, it's over. The sauce was a cream pesto sauce, pungent and flavorful, the tortellini was the perfect texture and the flavors blended beautifully. I think I appreciated and was excited that there was even the opinion for this! My absolute FAVORITE of the night was the lobster ravioli. It came with six pieces, six LARGE pieces I should say. It's a bright orangey red color, like a lobster which was very interesting. When you bite into it, you taste the wonderful filling and a ton of LOBSTER. yes you actually get a lot of lobster in each bite. DEFINITELY recommend it! I think my "least favorite" of the night was the shrimp scampi. A lot of people at my table loved it, but I'm a little biased with lemon flavoring and things. But it was good still! We got dessert also: Coppa pistachio, Coppa mascarpone, and cappuccino truffle. The pistachio one was okay, not my favorite but it's a lot of gelato. The mascarpone one was really good if you love amaretto! Super rich and creamy. The truffle was my favorite! So good with its coffee flavors. Overall this place is a hidden gem for me. Definitely recommend it here, definitely coming back service is great, food is AMAZING, and prices are even BETTER. read more

Really nice neighborhood trattoria that serves up traditional southern Italian food. The food is freshly prepared. The eggplant parm is a huge standout. Very reasonable prices and BYOB! There's a nice liquor store right across the street if you need to run out and get more. I've probably been here 20 times. My only negative comment is that the place is starting to look a little worn out and it's overdue for a face lift. read more

A friend of mine chose to go D' Parma's for his birthday recalling the Lobster Ravioli he used to get there with fondness, as we've been coming here for 5 years we have a sense of what to expect. We hunt online for coupons and make sure to call ahead and confirmed with the restaurant if they accepted it. The gentlemen who answered assured us that they would. We are seated at a table next to a icy cold wall with a draft and behind an espresso machine to boot. The waitress has the appearance of a stand in for the movie Blade-Runner and an attitude to match. We tell her of the coupon and she instantly contested it's validity to us but said she would have to call the manager at the Boston location to see as there was no manager on staff at ALL! (this is unheard of to me btw.) She comes back from the phone call and says that "you spoke to a dishwasher who shouldn't have said that and no they will not accept it." We decide to stay and then order the Eggplant Rolls that were mushy and cold, and a very interesting version of stuffed mushrooms. Then comes the en trees. The lobster raviolis were sized a mere quarter of what they used to be, not only that they were the frozen, pre-made kind with the fake coloring in a rather thick looking cream sauce. The chicken parm was doused in a heap of crushed tomatoes with a very tinny taste to them and not a strip of basil or chunk of garlic in it. The chicken marsala was so full of brown sugar and hard muchrooms that we thought we got the wrong dish. And my chicken broccoli ziti was covered in an insipid gelatinous cream sauce with again not a strip of herb. Meanwhile as we get a load of the array the unfriendly waitress put in front of us, a flock of the new Brazilian team was viewing us from the archway to the b.o.h. I get her attention and say that this food was inedible and then I was accused of trying to get a free meal and that because my friend had eaten some of his ravioli that he enjoyed it. I then asked for the manager and she responded "there is no manager here tonight." I reply. "get me a head chef, shift sup. anyone?" "no... I can get you the phone number for the manager." "you do that" I said. We wait 5 min and she decided to just make the call for me. She then comes back and said she spoke with the mang. and they will now accept the voucher for 25$ off! " I say oh no, 3 people didn't touch their food. We ate your appitizers and they were cold." She says" why didn't you say anything then, huh? Don't take it out on me because you didn't like your meal. Look, he ate the raviolis!" Which were still more than half there on the plate. My intention then was to only pay for the apps. because we ate them crappy things at least. It went back and forth like that for several minutes until a male waiter came and just charged us for the appetizers like we had asked for. This was hands down the worst dinner I ever had with the most rude and lazy staff housed in a freezing cold, uninsulated, relic box of a structure decorated with raw lattice, dusty silk flowers and an out of place bamboo fountain. There's a reason they keep it so dark in there. so you don't notice the slack and all the tin cans they had to open! PS: and the parking is horrible for this place. read more

At 7:30 Saturday night the wait was too long so we ordered.to go. The best eggplant parmagiana (sp) hot sub I ever had and I have had many. Rich, tender juicy and fresh. An interesting tomato sauce, mild and tasty. I also ordered.the ensalata de casa. Beautifully arranged with lettuce, cucumber, tomatos, roasted red peppers, basil and sliced circles of mozzarella. The guy who answered was very rude and said that they are already closed. My husband said that he thought they are open until 11 and the guy says no and hangs up. Great atmosphere, nice menu selection, but short on flavor. Again, ethnic recipes whose seasonings and ingredients have been homogenized and lack the flavors that you would expect from an Italian menu. I had the tortellini soup which was excellent, and the Veal Picatta. The veal was prepared perfectly, but the sauce had little to no flavor. A little lemon juice goes a long way in a picatta sauce. read more

So I've been a couple of times in the last few weeks. Met an old friend who lives in Europe with her boyfriend, staying a few blocks away for dinner a few weeks ago. Weekend nights are crowded and lively, the food was very good and the service efficient. Weirdly they had eaten a large lunch in the city -- so they shared a meal and that wasn't problem. They were sad to hear they were out of cappuccino but we all had tiramisu which was wonderful. Today went for midday lunch/meal with my mom and some of her friends, one with serious dementia. The waitress was very nice greeting us, I gave her as heads up, and she was very sweet and understanding. The food was wonderful and their bread which is always tasty, was toasted and warm.
