This park is located in a triangle along Colorado Blvd., Alameda Ave., and Leetsdale Dr. It's always nice to have parks and green areas in the city! This 13 acre plot of land was donated by the Burns' family in honor of Daniel C Burns in 1940.
It took some effort to get here along Alameda Blvd. I didn't know where the parking was going to be, so I ended up driving around the triangle of the park before properly entering the parking lot.
I didn't really feel comfortable being here at the parking lot off Alameda Blvd. I parked, walked a very short distance, & took pictures. There were people at the park, but not necessarily park goers near the parking lot. There are not that many parking spaces, maybe 15-20?
I wanted to see the sculptures here. They are spread out in the park. I just zoomed in with my phone to take the pictures. I saw other sculptures as I drove around the park on the main roads. The park itself was maintained, was freshly mowed and nicely green.
I'm not sure which ones, but four sculptures have been here since 1968. In that year, there was the one-time-only Denver Sculpture Symposium here. Those sculptures were made using plywood coated with fiberglass. They need to be maintained regularly. At the time, these sculptures were supposed be in place temporarily.
The first piece I saw was the Red & Black Sculpture (Untitled- vertical black and red). This is an original piece from 1968. "This sculpture by Wilbert Verheist is of two monolithic abstract forms, one black, one red." - per the denverpublicart website. It's located pretty close to the corner of E. Alameda Ave & S. Colorado Blvd.
The arched sculpture (Untitled - Yellow Semi-circle) was created in place starting on 6/12/68 and finished in roughly 4 weeks. It's made out of concrete. To the left of this sculpture is one called Jazz. It's been here since 1999. It's made using Steel. There's controversy about whether this should be there with the others as people feel this piece is not minimalistic like the others.
I'm glad I saw them. I enjoy viewing Public Art! Denver has a wealth of public art!
