This is one of Denver's smallest parks with 80 acres surrounded by the Capitol Hill neighborhood and the Denver Botanic Gardens on the east side. There is both a paved and gravel path around the outside perimeter and a large grassed open space inside. There are 4 walk-in entrances on the west side and 3 entrances on the east side. No parking inside. A part of the former loop road which closed in 2020 is open to cars on 12th Ave. No car access from 8th or 13th Ave. Plenty of porta-potties including handicap accessible. No other services. I walked around the park from the southwest corner in 35 minutes, about 3500 steps.There is a marble pavilion on the east erected in 1907 with rose gardens on both north & south sides and 3 fountains fscing west when Spring returns. I had difficulty in finding street parking on the west side. During my walk, I saw plenty of spots to park on the east side. read more

Cheesman park is always a good time. During the warmer months this place is full of life! Great spot to spend the day!

A terrific place to walk, run or bike around. This 100 acre park borders the Capitol Hill area of Denver as well as the Botanic Gardens. Its inviting lawn offers a place to stretch out or play volleyball. The fountains and pavilion and rose gardens are sights worth seeing. There a running track around the perimeter and a road for biking as well. Look off in the distance and see the mountains. A part of Denver no one should miss. There's a play area for kids as well as a cafe with indoor and outdoor seating on the north side. Dogs on a leash may visit as well. read more

Once you are close look for street parking. There is no dedicated parking lot for this park. This is a popular spot to bring your dog. I saw other people running and going for walks. I did not see any other people with kids, but I'm sure in the summertime more families are here. I may just be one of the few crazy people who still always brings their kids outside in the wintertime. For those with kids there is a playground here. Also in one of the corners of the park there are tons of squirrels. They are quite friendly. There was construction going on on the fountains while I was there. As spring is now here, going to parks in Denver is becoming a bigger part of ways to spend your time. Cheesman park is very walkable to those who live in Cap Hill. Parking can be a bit touch and go on very beautiful days. Street parking is the primary option around here. There's tons of open space to walk around or just sit in the park and relax. You'll often find a volleyball squad, dogs on a stroll, and more. There's not too much for permanent work equipment or a playground from what I've witnessed. It's a great open space with nice scenery and space to mingle. read more

Cheesman Park is pretty great. Lots of activity there, especially when the weather is warm or nice. It's pretty relaxed, you can bring games, snacks, beverages -- keep it clean! There are dumpsters around. And people mostly are very good with being clean & respectful. The bathroom situation isn't the best. I guess maybe it kinda has to be that way with so many houseless around, but wow would it be nice to have some real bathrooms there... I wish we could have nice things! Lots of puppers being walked and well, you might see me with my lizard on a leash :) :) :) It's a good spot to get some exercise with various different paths to choose from. Sometimes the big building with the pillars (the pavillion area) has music one time I saw a DJ... I don't know what was going on or when that happens. Interesting as always, Denver! read more

I love how this is my neighborhood strolling spot. It is popular with sunbathers on the weekend no matter the temp. It is "vanilla" in visual interest. Large open field with a solitary pavillion and paths which run the perimeter ( a mile?). Mostly closed off to traffic. The botanic garden is adjacent, admission applies. When it starts blooming, maybe it will add a splash of color to the landscape. read more

Saturday, March 25th, 2023 late afternoon Cheesman Park Free street parking surrounding the entire park (read all signs/certain months/times of year may not permit parking) This park was on our list to experience during our week in Denver. We easily found free street parking, we enjoyed a nice park stroll in the cool weather, plenty of people around walking, jogging, conversing, playing with their dogs, singles, couples, families, duo and small groups of folks. We saw some roller skaters having the time of their lives and a whipcracker practicing their skill both intriguing to watch. Porta potty bathrooms but empty hand sanitizers. The entire park was perfection, beautiful, inviting, safe, relaxing, scenic views, very cool vibes that puts you in an instant good mood. Plenty of benches and space. We throughly enjoyed our time here and we'll be back when in Denver. read more

I agree with Larissa (previous reviewer); this is a very crowded park with too many dogs off leash. We normally go to City Park (big, beautiful, lots of space) and walked the pups at City this morning but decided to try Cheesman in the afternoon - boy, was that a mistake! First thing, there was no street parking (this was on Sunday, they block off some of the streets around the park). We did the outer perimeter of the park to avoid all of the off leash dogs and also had to dodge cars during some sections because the sidewalks had not been cleared. Walking on the pretty broad street within the park, we also had to move aside for runners and bikers who seemed to think they had the right-of-way. It was not the peaceful, beautiful walk we had hoped for. If you live across the street, this is probably a convenient location - but for everyone else, go to City Park which has: ample parking, lots of paved paths (cleared of snow), you can walk for over an hour without repeating the path, big, beautiful trees and ponds, and lots and lots of space. read more

Cheesman is my favorite Denver park. I'm prejudiced--if I go down the staircase behind my townhouse and open the gate, I'm standing in the park and just steps from the jogging path. The path is about 1.4 miles with a clinker base, although it is wearing to dirt in many places. It provides a pleasant walk or run and is quite popular first thing in the morning and after work hours. The park is 80.7 acres and dates to 1898. It is surrounded by homes, apartments, and condos on three sides (Humboldt, Race, and 13th Avenue). The fourth side is 8th Avenue which is quite busy and has no parking, so the park is almost private to the neighborhood. There is a lot of parking on the ring road that runs through the park. Much of the park was originally a number of different cemeteries, divided up among various faiths and ethnicities. Most of the cemetery was vacated in 1890 and the City gave 90 days for families to remove the remains of their relatives. This did not work out well and Denver hired a contractor in 1893 to remove the remaining burials to Riverside Cemetery. It's never a good idea to hire the low bidder and to provide no supervision. The removal process was a mess and the contractor was finally fired, but the project was never completed. Bones and bits of coffins continue to turn up today. A highlight of Cheesman Park is the Cheesman Memorial Pavilion which was built in 1908. This is a beautiful, neoclassical temple of Colorado Yule marble, surrounded today by extensive flower beds, rose gardens, and reflecting pools. Unfortunately, the original raised platform with a grand staircase on which the Pavilion sits was regraded and covered with a sloping lawn during a restoration in the 1970s. The Park lost a number of its original features over the years. A 2008 master plan called for extensive replanting, rebuilding of the original figure-8 interior path, and restoration of the base and surroundings of the Cheesman Memorial. Much of this work has been completed, except for the Pavilion project. The Denver Botanic Gardens abuts the central east side of the Park. You can get a glimpse of the Gardens from the jogging path. People with a Gardens' membership can get a dongle that activates the rear gate to the Gardens which is directly accessible from Cheesman Park. This is very convenient for those of us who live on the west side of the Gardens. read more

The park currently has roads that are closed to vehicles so that pedestrians are safe and have more space to walk, run etc. freely. Parking can be tricky as there is only street parking and the streets in this part of town are narrow. read more

Really great park in Denver! I was surprised by how ginormous the park is. I did just one loop that was a mile, but I'm sure walking around the entire park would be at least 2-3 miles. There were great views of the city and there's a pantheon type structure where an event was going on so maybe you can rent it out (?). After spending an afternoon at the Denver Botanical Gardens, I strolled my way to Cheesman park which is a few blocks away. It is located near a quiet residential area. The park has lots of green space. Great for picnics, playground for games. There's a jogging trail as well. You'll also find a pavilion area - great to stay in the shade especially since I came in a sunny Monday midday. read more

This park is the perfect place to relax on the weekend. The park is 80 acres and includes trails -some shade- and a huge lawn that is perfect for picnics, games, or just laying down to soak up the sun (which you can tell is what I did from my picture!) On the weekends you'll find several wedding parties taking pictures (usually near the pavilion) but the park is so large that there's plenty of room for everyone! There are bathrooms. When they close seasonly, they do still have Porta pottys. This park is close to the zoo and the botanic gardens. read more

"There's so much room for activities!!!" That's right there's so much room, because you are transported to nature in the city. This park is my go-to when I want to get out and about and just relax while enjoying some sun. This is the perfect park to just come and chill. Unlike City Park and Wash Park, Cheeseman is not quite as popular so you pretty much have your choice of where you want to plop and take up some room in this ginormous area! There's paths that surround the entire park so you can get your workout on or just enjoy the sights as you saunter around and see all that this tree encircled Park has to offer. If you're into historical things, this park is a very different kind of historical location. If you look it up on the internet, you will see that this park was actually once a graveyard back in the 1800's. I actually didn't know this until about my 5th time when I was there and passed by a plaque with all the information and a photo of what it used to look like. I think that fact makes it more unique and cool that there's such rich history still involved. There's also the beautiful Pavilion to look at as you relax or if you're lucky you might catch a wedding happening there because it is such a popular wedding location. There are also art festivals there, I actually just attended the Cheesman Art Festival last weekend and it was the perfect location to just walk the road and take in all of the art. They do have a play area for children to hangout and enjoy themselves. Dogs are allowed everywhere in this park so bring your pups. The only problem is the bathrooms are not clean and do not have toilet paper most times. They have a few outhouses, but they also aren't clean and are with out toilet paper. So I suggest going to the restroom before you come for a day at the park! read more

I've been to the Cheesman Park neighborhood, but until this past Memorial Day weekend, I hadn't actually been to the park. With a friend throwing her traditional hang-at-the-park birthday the BF and I made our way here for some grilling out, games, and chill time at the park! ++ There's lots of trees clustered about and the lawns seem to be well kept. Lots of space for cornhole, sauce toss, even volleyball! ++ Tons of friendly people and dogs. Our party ended up joining up with another party that was happening. The more the merrier right?! ++ A great loop for walking or running. Whatever your fancy! ++ Great oasis in the midst of downtown Denver. Only negatives: -- The bathroom situation needed some serious TLC. The one closest to the gazebo was LITERALLY overflowing! Ick! -- Parking in this area is a bit tough and there isn't enough signage indicating where not to park. Several of my friends had to move there vehicles. Given that this is a tradition for my friend, I look forward to our annual returns to Cheesman Park and perhaps even a few summery picnics thrown in too! **Pro Tip: As other reviewers have mentioned: Cheesman Park used to be a cemetery. Gorgeous park in the middle of the city. I always do the large loop around the park and it's a little over 2 miles when I make it back to my apartment. Cheesman hosts a variety of festivals and fun activities. You'll also find lots of friendly squirrels that will come up to you basically begging for food. Yikes. Plenty of people watching to do here and lots of them have cute dogs too! It's beautiful in the summer and the park itself is kept up very well. I want to like this PARK in a big good way, BUT, its freaking HUGE to my stand point, err, walking points, mind you... Oh well, it can be "daunting" for some, and I just hope its lighted in appropriate places. Some came to exercise, some even have photos taken for their beautiful Wedding day, some walk their dogs and even have picnics when the weather is good. But what intrigues me MORE about Cheesman Park was especially when the time for SUN DOWN or SUN SET or DUSK time. Heard from a couple of my friends, this place is SPOOKY. Especially at the playground. Heard or read somewhere about DEAD Bodies used to be buried everywhere... I know its PAST Halloween... but with several paranormal investigations, and some solid evidences capturing "stuffs", I dont mind returning to Cheesman Park to investigate when time and schedule permitting. Was here recently Friday October 14th 2011. Come equipped for any season of the year, if you want to picnic at the park, make sure dont be alone AFTER DARK, and who knows if you are like me, bring a CAMERA to explore of the Unknown Paranormal that lingers in this park. read more

Friends that we were visiting that live in the neighborhood suggested that we check this place out. We were able to walk through the park on the way to dinner and it was full of dogs, runners, and people on blankets lounging and hanging out. When we finally had the chance to come check it out, we pitched up our hammocks and relaxed in the shade. The trees are a nice addition. But, even with that hammock experience, I can't say that it was anything special. Maybe we just went on an off day? Maybe it's usually full of events and other stuff going on? Look no further for an urban park in Denver. Surrounds with trees, buildings, downtown and mountain views. The park is centrally located is the neighborhood, walking distance from downtown, great place to play volleyball and frisbee. For dog lovers, here you can have your dog have the time of his life, but make sure of leash policy first since rangers not going to be happy with off-leash dogs. Great place for running as it offers diversity of views as well as up and downhills. there are couple shell building masses in the center of the park. If you are into Photography, just try to shoot some around sunset near these masses. the park lacks trees but I count that as a good thing to have wide open space to play freely. read more

Very nice park located near the botanic gardens this was the first place we came to when we arrived in Denver on vacation. We wanted to get some fresh air and exercise after being cooped up in a plane for hours. The park itself is beautiful. Tons of wide open space to run, let the kids play, or for adults to play games/picnic/whatever. My only qualm is the lack of parking and bathrooms. We spent a bit of time roaming the residential streets nearby, trying to figure out where parking is allowed. And the only bathrooms we could find were less than desirable port o potty's. Overall, it's a great place to get air, sunshine and exercise. read more

We booked an air b and b a street over from this park which was probably the best decision ever made when choosing the location so close to down Denver. The park is massive and has a paved loop that borders the perimeter as well as lots of little paths through the park connecting you to different areas. It's backed up to the Denver botanical gardens and zoo as well but we didn't even touch that part of the park to really enjoy it. Bring a blanket to throw down and pack a small cooler for picnic under one of the many shaded trees and just sit and people watch at all the groups and walks of life there are! People were roller skating, dancing, meeting, at the monument part which is absolutely beautiful and great picture setting. Every time we came we gravitated towards the play ground area so my 6 year old could wonder over and play while my older boys and boyfriend played soccer and ball close by in a huge grassy field off the main grassy area of the park. 10/10 recommend if you're visiting this area looking for something family oriented and free !! read more

This park is gigantic, and right in the middle of Denver! There is always something to do, and you will definitely have a great time people watching. Whether you're having a picnic or grill session, playing volleyball, cornhole, sunbathing, exercising, throwing frisbees, whatever you want, you can do it here and will (hopefully) have a blast. Bring your binoculars (or don't because that's kind of strange) because the people watching is where it's at. Oh, there are always a TON of dogs running around, which are cute to look at. Unfortunately, I am allergic to dogs, so I try not to interact. But if a cute puppy dog plops itself down next to me as I'm chilling in the park, I can't just shoo it away! And I am sure that you know that this place used to be a cemetery. Like where they buried dead people and stuff. Apparently, the graveyard was supposed to be moved elsewhere, but work stopped halfway through and not all of the goblins and ghouls were moved properly. What to do now? Well, you build a park right over it. No big deal, right? I ain't afraid of no ghosts! But I am afraid of the coppers, so hide yo booze (no glass bottles, although this is common in most parks). Careful about drinking in the park. Just trust me on that. Thank you to Denver for letting me have a carefree time close to downtown. read more

Been a fan of Cheesman since before I lived within walking distance. I have visited in all seasons and never had an unpleasant interaction with a living person or restless spirit from a desecrated gravesite there. I learned more about Denver history from reading a sign at Cheesman than I learned in any history class during my early upbringing in the area a hundred years ago during the Reagan administration. Besides being green beautifully manicured, with lots of mature shade trees and a view of the city, there is an incredible amount of positive energy at this park from all of the people and dogs enjoying themselves. Walkers, joggers, bikes, volleyball players and frolphers. I love it. What makes not quite a five star experience is needing to use the bathroom--pretty gross. Especially avoid the one with the juggalo graffiti. Hopefully it is better now but I unfortunately had to use it twice and the urinal section was overflowing with pee. The other one nearby was somewhat cleaner, even had toilet paper but the door did not lock. read more

Cheesman Park - old, well established, and also newly renovated, that is, if parks can be renovated. There are now cement paths that run through and around the park, which are great for those of us that need a smoother, more even place to walk. The park is very well maintained, and highly used. I love that it sits up against The Denver Botanic Gardens, which also a great place to visit too (but that's another review). BIG, beautiful, and spacious enough to just be, even when there are lots of people there, you feel as those you and your companions (furry and not), are the only ones there. The view - gorgeous! It's nice to be in the park, and know the city is right there too! Walking trails/paths, are maintained, and it's just nice to "be" there. The city is also implementing "no drive days," where cars aren't allowed in the park. Kudos to the city for doing this every so often. Thank you to the city for updating the park, and not letting it go. We love our Cheesman Park! Go, enjoy, and "be" at Cheesman Park. read more
