I specifically called ahead and asked for a stylist who specializes in short haircuts. Instead, I was paired with someone who seemed fresh out of school and specialized in highlights. I showed the stylist multiple inspiration pictures, but the final result looked nothing like them. Don't let the high-end atmosphere or great reviews fool you--they completely ignored my preferences. Not every woman wants long, highlighted hair. Some of us are professionals who prefer short, sharp styles, and we deserve to be paired with stylists who actually have that skill set. I believe Aiden refused to service me when he saw who I was (I have never interacted with him in real life, but we have seen each other on Grindr; I had no idea he worked here, and regardless it didn't matter to me, because I came to get my hair cut, not to interact with any human being in particular). I told her that the purple to pink ombre I wanted on my dark hair would be the first time I've ever done a dramatic change, and it turned out absolutely beautiful. I could not have asked for a better result! It took about an hour for the bleach to lighten my hair enough for dye, but Terra checked it frequently while kindly reassuring me the colors would still appear my desired shades. She patiently explained what she did at every step of the process, answering my questions about fading, hair damage, staining clothing, etc. She definitely knows her stuff; she showed me pictures of her hair dyed a HUGE array of colors--quite literally every color of the rainbow. Terra is not only a wonderful stylist, but also seems to be a compassionate and thoughtful person. I will recommend her to anyone looking for an excellent salon experience. Turns out most of the ladies from Hair Benders are now at No. 7! On my friend's recommendation, I drove from Decatur to Champaign for a wax from Tracy - So worth it! Not only is the price amazing ($50 for a brazilian), but Tracy is a skilled waxer. It took about 20 minutes and was pretty painless for getting hair ripped out by its roots. I enjoyed chatting with her and learned some places to check out on future trips to town, which was great. I am definitely making the trip out to the U of I campus again! Some cons: I waited 5-10 mins. past my appointment time (but again, it was so very worth it!), and when I got home I noticed some hairs that had gotten missed (no big deal - I often find thalt a few spots will have a few stubborn hairs). Also the salon has a glass storefront letting all of the afternoon sun in, so it was kind of warm inside. None of these things are a big deal to me - but may be for others. I asked for a one-length cut at just above my shoulders and he gave me a one length cut just below my ears. I figured what have I got to lose? I've been getting bad haircuts since I've lived in the C-U and the one good stylist I had in Champaign moved to Chicago a few years ago. I really needed a haircut so I decided to give Timothy John a try again only this time I was booked with Tina and she did a great job! She gave me a lovely one length cut just above my shoulders, which is exactly what I wanted. She styled it very nicely. It was smooth and bouncy. I think it's hard to rate an entire salon because obviously it depends on the individual stylist you get, and they are not all going to be good. If they aren't going to listen and you're stuck growing a haircut for a year then they're not a good stylist! I would rate Tina 5 stars! She knows how to cut and style hair and she listens!
