Abysmal service from Amber, the store manager, whose rambling, defensive monologues would qualify her to play the part of Hysterical Store Clerk #1 in a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode. Except this is real life. And unfortunately, Larry David wasn't always exaggerating. My husband and I spent quite a bit of time selecting the lamp shade to accompany our vintage 1960s lamp. (I won't even get into the issue of Amber not honoring the lamp shade discount promised us upon using D&W's lamp rewiring service.) Let's focus on what happened after we placed the order in AUGUST, paid for it upfront, and were told we'd receive a call to pick it up when the shade was delivered to their store. *3 and a half months* passed and no word from D&W. The staff clearly accepts no accountability for their merchandise or customer experience. A buttoned-up, professional place would proactively identify unfulfilled orders from three months ago, investigate shipment delays, and proactively reach out to customers to let them know what's going on. But alas, we're talking about D&W. So, it took my several phone calls in NOVEMBER to prompt them to check on the order with their supplier *for the first time*. Instead of being apologetic about the poor customer experience and inconvenience the delay caused me, Amber actually had the tone-deaf audacity to be defensive when I called to check in on the lamp shade. 1) She launches into an indignant over-explanation of how I am just one of 30 customers with this issue (not doing yourself any favors by mentioning that, girlfriend) and how the issue is with the supplier and D&W is just the middle man and knows nothing (thank you for literally explaining how retail works - this would be like a Target employee deferring 100% responsibility to their supplier for an unfulfilled order I placed on Target.com). Then she pressures me to simply accept a refund (no doubt to absolve her of further responsibility.) I tell her multiple times that I don't want a refund, as I have been waiting for the lamp shade for over three months. 2) I ask Amber to provide the shipping tracking number (so that I would no longer need to deal with her for updates), and she agrees - asking for my email address so she can send the info. After I give it to her, she repeats out of nowhere, "I'd really prefer that you get a refund." I once again reiterate that I don't want this option. And this is when her hysteria ensues. She starts rambling about how the delays are not her fault and DW shouldn't be expected to call me every day (no, sister - the issue was that you never once proactively contacted me and are now defensive about my follow-ups on a product I pre-paid for 3 months ago). I'm stunned by her behavior and simply ask her to email the tracking number. And she says NO. ...And HANGS UP ON ME. 3) I promptly receive an email from Amber saying she refunded my order. This disturbs me for several reasons, not least of all for the fact that she extracted my email address under the guise of sending tracking info just to turn around and force an outcome against my will. Delays suck but they happen. And it makes a world of difference for a retailer to proactively keep their customers in the loop and show a little courtesy. And perhaps not lie to them and disrespect them. Needless to say, I'll be taking my lamp and lamp shade needs elsewhere and hope to limit future exposure to the Ambers of the world to television. read more

I was 100% ok with all pricing. Your employee became short tempered and agitated when I would not agree to leave anything overnight. I was willing to bring my lamps and materials back the next day NOT leave anything overnight. It Further, what good is a phone call going to do when you are clearly going to back your employees 100% rather than acknowledge their behavior? You have cameras right? Not only did they repair the connection, they also repaired the wobbly base and arranged the wiring so that, for the first time since I bought the darn thing, I'm actually able to get the two halves of the lamp to connect smoothly. I needed to rebuild a lamp that hangs in my stairwell, but I wanted to pick up the parts before taking it down. I sent a picture to D&W, and they assured me by email that they had the necessary lamp sockets. When I went to pick them up, the person selling the parts only wanted to know the length that I needed. It would have been helpful if the response to my email had raised this question, but I soldiered on. I admitted that I didn't know but had hoped that if I got the wrong parts, I could exchange them for the correct ones. At this point, she chanted her mantra (which would be repeated twice more before I left), which is, "once they leave the store, they are yours". I offered to show her the picture of the lamp, but she wasn't interested in looking at it, suggesting that it was my responsibility to tell her what I needed. Not wanting to make a return trip to the store, I bought the 3 sockets. It turned out that I needed longer ones, which I was able to buy from Amazon for about half the price D&W charged. The ones I bought from D&W are now gathering dust in my electrical parts bin, even though they were never used. When I got my credit card statement, I saw that I was charged a bit more than the amount shown on the invoice. Upon closer inspection, I saw that the invoice specifies that there is a "3% sur charge (sic) on all credit card transactions". Although this is not uncommon these days, most reputable stores will call this to your attention prior to completing the transaction, and if there is a sign to this effect in the store, I didn't see it. It really didn't amount to much, but, combined with their "no returns" policy, I think that it demonstrates a certain pettiness. With employees whose demeanor can best be described as "brusque" and policies that are biased against even honest and fair-minded customers, D&W Lighting epitomizes many of the reasons that consumers are turning away from brick and mortar local enterprises and are giving their business to online retailers like Amazon who, at the very least, understand the basics of customer service. read more

i brought in a lamp i'd bought at an estate sale that had no shade, was really old, had a broken side panel, was extremely dusty, and had an old power cord. i needed help. my sister referred me to these guys, so in i went! the people working there were super nice, friendly and attentive. they worked with me on getting the lamp up and working: they asked me what i wanted to have done with it, they gave me recommendations on lampshades and the things that go on top to hold the lampshades in place. loved all the help because i know absolutely nothing about lamps. they had originally quoted me 2-3 weeks to get the lamp done, which was fine by me. no rush. it's a lamp for god's sakes! however i got a pleasant surprise via a phone call from them only a few days after i dropped it off...the lamp was ready!!! Not only was what we found made in the 1930's it was reasonably priced and in perfect condition. The selection of items is researched and from varied sources , and the shades available come in all shapes , sizes and colors. The last item we found is a wonderful twin Griffen headed lamp which had been in a Chicago hotel in the early 1900's . If you have any lighting related repairs needs, this is the best place in town. A quick note, for those who are confused as I was, this location sells the parts and provide repair services while the "showroom" is right across the street. I was trying to replace the base of a ceiling fan in my new house but wasn't able to find the right parts anywhere. I went to all the big box stores and they said that the ceiling fan is too old (7 years) and they don't carry the parts anymore. I contacted some electrician as well and they said it might be easier to just replace the entire ceiling fan, which would have cost me a few hundred dollars for the unit and installation. However, one thing they all said is to go check out D&W Lighting as a last resort. Their tone was like "if they don't have it, then you're out of luck". And lo and behold, I dropped by the place one afternoon and they had exactly what I needed!!! For a mere $12, I replaced the base myself and now we have light in our living room again! I was housesitting at a home I have stayed at on a regular basis for several years. There is a lamp on the bedside table in the bedroom I use that I think is ugly. A couple of stays ago in the middle of the night when I reached to turn the lamp on I knocked it off the table. Thankfully it didn't break. This time I wasn't so lucky the finial broke when it hit the floor. I went to one of "those" two big stores which a lot of stuff and very little service and walked out very frustrated with out what I needed. I started worrying, I needed to fix this lamp and my clients were to get home the next day. I got on Yelp and looked for stores that sold lamp parts. D&W was the closest store that was open on Saturday. I went in, didn't wait but a couple of minutes before a woman offered to help me. She looked at the pieces I had and said no problem. She looked around in some bins for a minute and handed me the part I needed. When I asked what I owed her...she said nothing. Again, walked in the store and less than five minutes later I walked out with exactly what I needed, and wasn't charged. There is not enough of this kind of customer service anymore. Having someone who knew what I needed (instead of faking their way through it) was refreshing. Please support this business that knows what they are doing and how to treat people. read more

I will start by saying they are very nice people. I remind myself that the reason for reviews is to tell people about good experiences as well as poor ones. My experience with D&W was a poor experience. I purchased a Mid Century Modern hanging light at an estate sale for an insanely cheap price. I was thrilled! I took it to them to have it rewired to be safe. I called first, was assured on the phone that they could do it but it would be best for me not to bring in the glass shade (which hangs at the bottom). I took in the fixture and was told it would be 2-3 weeks and $125. At 2 weeks, I called. No, not ready. At 3 weeks, I called on Monday. Yes, they could have it ready by Weds since I'd be close by. On Tuesday, they called to tell me they didn't have a part which was a small switch on the light that would allow me to turn on/off on the lamp itself. There was a big story on that part wouldn't be available until November. Could I go without that and just turn on at the wall? You bet! When I got there to pick up, I said it didn't look like the new parts were going to jive with the glass and the finial that I still had at home. They looked at me like I had spiders coming out of my eyeballs. "Oh yes," they all said..."it will. We measured it. It is standard" blah blah. I felt very "little ladied" as though I was stupid. I am not. Turns out I was right. I got home (way across town) and it didn't fit. The innards of the fixture were too long so now the glass shade didn't meet up with the metal part (it's like a clam shell or flying saucer). I called. I was very upset. "Bring it in. We will fix it while you wait." I took it. They took one look told me I'd have to leave it. Why didn't they see as easily as I had seen that what they took off in no way resembled what they put back on? I was so upset, I asked for a refund. They apologized and refunded my money. They had already thrown away my old fixture so I now didn't have any guts that worked for my lamp. They called, felt bad, and asked if I could just make it work for my upcoming dinner party. I don't think they ever understood that what they did rendered the entire lamp unusable because the shade and the lamp did not meet anymore...(it's like a flying saucer). I was really excited about this lamp and I am unhappy at the experience I had with D&W. Anyway, I took it to Tipler's Lamp Shop on 5th this morning. I felt 100% confident in my experience there so far. They assured me that they could see where the other place went wrong and that they could certainly take care of it. read more

I think something must have been in retrograde because after I found the perfect fixture, things went awry. The LED bulbs were not included when I picked up my order, as the employee had indicated. The next day, I went back and was given the wrong bulbs. And, it was extremely frustrating when I was not allowed to return the wrong bulbs as the receipt was under my name but had an incorrect address. (See what I mean...?) Finally, it all worked out but not without three trips back to remedy the issue. Our new fixtures look fabulous and I will return to shop here when ever in need but I'll check the Mayan calendar, astrology report and Aunt Louise's crystal ball before going. read more

I give three for my previous good experiences with this shop. Good, competent employees. Lots of help, good parts. Today was a mess. After navigating the door with my delicate glass shade in a box without being offered help, I had to wait for the woman at the counter to communicate her friend's phone number to whoever she was chatting with. Yeah, maybe it wasn't but it sounded like a personal call. So I finally got to talk to her. I need a fairly basic and well known part for a vintage hanging glass shade. I get that she had no idea what I was talking about, but she just sort of made stuff up and blew me off. Suggested having a custom piece made (which wasn't even in the realm of necessary). No help at all. I would have been ok with her asking someone else, with telling me she didn't know, with telling me she'd get back to me. This place is super cool! I'm so glad to know it's in the neighborhood. I have a really interesting lamp and the shade was damaged in a move a few years ago. I tried to find an appropriate fix at Lowe's, Target, Home Depot and the like but there was nothing that looked modern or remotely high end. I took the lamp into the D&W Showroom and voila -- an awesome shade, a new harp to make the lamp taller and a different lamp finial to pull it all together. The lamp looks like new again, or maybe even better than when it was new! The cool thing about this place is that they make lamps out of almost anything from almost any time period so there are so many cool and interesting choices that are truly unique. I wish I knew about D&W when I redid my home a few years ago. I'll definitely be stopping by for my next few design projects. read more

These folks explained my repair options, gave me a choice, finished early and under budget. And having the lamps home now for at least a week ... I can tell you they did great work! I was shopping for an entry light for my son's new house, but found so many choices that I can't wait to re-do my own entry light. It is 22 years old and so outdated - I am ready for a change. This Allandale location is considerably smaller than the N Lamar location, but still manages to pack quite a bit into such a small place. The gruff older guy who appears to run the place chatted with us at length about our various lamp projects, then directed me to N Lamar to have a custom lampshade made, as the best lady to discuss it with works there (I have a review detailing that experience as well for those interested). So while this location didn't meet our needs, we appreciated the time the shopkeep spent discussing our options with us. He also offered a fair analysis of what our options were for replacing a lamp cord and lampshades, even going so far as to suggest materials that might work for making a homemade lampshade, like Japanese rice paper, and where I could find it. This place is great! I wanted to swag a fixture from West Elm and it was looking like it might be impossible... But the folks at D&W had it handled! It took about 2 weeks but for $75, I had a new swag lamp with 20 ft of wire AND matching chain. A totally fair price of you ask me. Also I wanted a new shade for a vintage brass lamp and found a beautiful shade in a heather/textured grey. The shade was definitely on the pricier side ($65) but it's unique and the shape is not easily found at the Targets or IKEAs of the world. Also, their curated collection of vintage lamps and fixtures is INSANE. In summation: great folks, great prices, quality craftsmanship, and unique pieces. read more

They have come to my rescue more than once. Fixtures were sent to me not painted as requested and required someone to take them apart and paint. They look awesome!! Second time was when the artist sent me 5 pendants that were to be used with a huge disc but the electrical cord was the wrong kind. We had high hopes of finding some unique lighting for our home here. They do have a lot of interesting lights, but nothing really grabbed us. A lot of it looks junky. Maybe its the way everything is packed into this small space. Very hard to shop with kids. They did explain that they are a vintage light store all the prices included having the fixture rewired so it would be safe for use. The fixtures aren't fixed yet, they'll work on them after you make a purchase. That said, the prices seemed pretty high for what they had. You'd really have to want that specific old light to go for those prices. But if you need a lamp shade, they have tons of new shades and stuff to fit antique lamps in stock. Fun to look, but we've always walked out without making a purchase. read more

Dropped off my lamp part for repair and they said it would be several days. 3 weeks later and after a handful of phone calls where I was told they'd check on status and call me back (never did return one of these calls), I told them I preferred to come get my lamp part and take it elsewhere. While on the way to their shop got a call from them and they had misplaced my lamp part and just found it, unrepaired still. Mistakes happen but they handled this poorly over a 3 week period. Do yourself a favor and go to Brady's at 1807 W 35th instead. A much better option. read more
