I took in an antique chandelier and replacement chain, asked for 2' to be added to the chain length. I was told it would be 4 days and $30, and they would call when it's done. Great, right? I called them on day 5: not done, would call with new estimate. Called again, as they didn't call back, told it would be done on day 7, and they would call. Called on day 8, told it wasn't done. Then they called back and said it was done and I was supposed to pick it up yesterday. Points lost for communication and overcommitment. When I pick it up, they say it's $45 and always has been. And they wanted to charge me for the chain I brought them. Points lost for poor organization, and maybe lying. As I'm leaving I realize they removed and didn't replace the bulbs, and the hanger I bent up to hold it in the car is gone. When I go in to ask about bulbs, the guy wants to make a call to find out more. Went next door for bulbs, tired of arguing the point. When I get home, it gets worse. Instead of adding 2', they added all the chain I gave them. Now I have to shorten it. And the nut at the base of the stem has been replaced with a cheap looking black part. Worst of all, the main part of the chandelier looks like it's cross-threaded onto the stem, so now it's tilted pretty severely. I'm worried about taking it apart again as crossed threads rarely go back in straight. Bending it seems like an even worse idea. This was, I thought, an easy job that I could ask someone else to do for me and save myself some time. Quite the opposite. D&W Lighting had the answers to my lighting problems, and they could not have been more helpful. I just needed shades for sconces. Should be easy, right? Well, it wasn't. I had been everywhere. D &W had so many shades that it was hard to choose. Also, they let me take several home on approval, things that I had thought would be perfect, but they didn't exactly work--but I brought them back, was never charged for anything. Then I brought in the actual sconces, and D&W were so unbelievably helpful. They fitted my unusually large fixtures with lighting hardware (harps, ok) and showed me what they would look like. They sent me home with 2 different shade sizes, different colors, so that I could see what would work in my own home. My wife bought an antique light, and I couldn't figure out what kind of bulb fit in there. I took the lamp here, and the lady immediately knew that the lamp was from Europe and I needed a little adapter so I could fit a standard American bulb. I also picked up a nice bracket to put it into the ceiling. When I left to go next door to get a bulb at the Light Bulb Shop, I guess I dropped the bracket out of my bag. OK, one of my rotten little scraps of fur cats chewed the cords on my lamps. Yes, I could have rewired them myself, but I didn't really have the time. So, I schlepped them to the The Fixture Shop. For $13 plus tax, they will rewire your lamps in less than a week. They have a choice of cord colors. They also carry lamp shades and other lamp fittings. I would have rated them 5 stars except for the fact that they are selling stuffed dogs and cats in their shop, which as an animal lover I found quite repugnant. I guess a lot of people don't know that they kill domestic cats and dogs in China for the fur to make these abhorrent objects d'art. Maybe if no one buys them, the shop will stop ordering them. The store is literally packed with merchandise, so if you aren't really careful, you'll soon find yourself bumping into something or someone. read more

Super friendly ladies that know their stuff. Took a $5000.00 antique lamp in to be repaired. Within seconds they had a look and determined it was a faulty bulb. I had done this but turns out the whole package is faulty which they reported was very common. Cost to me was absolutely nothing. I definitely will go back for my additional repairs. First, please be aware that D&W has a lamp/shade shop that is outstanding. However going to the repair shop only leads to disappointment and an empty pocketbook. I took a lamp to have it fixed as a nut was stripped and I could not remove it. I was told it would be $15 to fix and $20 to fix if it needed to be rewired. As the lamp had only been rewired initially because it needed a longer cord it did not need rewiring. I was told it would take a week to complete it. I got a call two days later. When I went to pick it up, I was charged the $20. I told the gentleman that it didn't need to be rewired and he said he didn't rewire; however, the previous cord was clear and very durable; it now has a green soft plastic cord. Once I got it out of the shop, I could tell they hadn't even bothered to dust it. And the socket is now chipped and discolored. I only give this business 2 stars because the store on the east side of Burnet is very good; the repair shop on the west side of Burnet is a scam. read more

I walked in to D&W with two lamps and thought it was going to take a long time to find the shades I needed. Nope! Amber ran all over the store and found some great shades and I was out of there in less than 45 minutes. Only a couple of people went in and out while I was there so I can't speak to what the experience would be like with a crowd, but I am very pleased with the helpful customer service I received. I could've gone to a big box store and bought a couple of ill-fitting shades for cheaper, but if you need a specific shade to go with a non-standard size lamp then D&W is your place. You'll pay more but you're getting good quality shades (mine are made in the USA) and great service. read more

We bought a gorgeous mid-century light fixture from Uncommon Objects for a steal of a price. Then we realized it needed to be completely rewired. Everyone said to take it to the guy at Breed & Co, but the guy at Breed & Co so we needed to take it here. He was dead on. The rewiring took longer than anticipated, but they did it well AND fixed the pulley system on the fixture. All in all, we made out like bandits and still spent less than half of what we would've on a brand new low end fixture from a big box store. read more

HIGHLY Recommend D&W Lighting to everyone! Here are two of our experiences: My wife and I were in a local vintage store, when I heard her say 'look at this!' A wooden floor lamp for $65 labeled 'Oak Floor Lamp' with an ugly rose colored fabric lamp shade and CFL bulb. But it wasn't oak, it was TEAK (though very dry, in great condition) and clearly mid-century! Before anyone else realized what we had, we took it to the checkout, bought it and told them they could keep the bulb and the shade :) Back home, we gave the lamp a good wipe down with Howard's Orange Oil and it came back to life! Now to find a shade. I read reviews of D&W and we live in Crestview, so we popped in and met Amber. She was very friendly, took one look at our lamp, checked the wiring and confirmed good condition, asked about our decor (mid-century modern) and disappeared. A minute later, she arrived with 4 shades and harps of various sizes. From there we narrowed the search down to drum shades in linen fabric and chose the perfect one with a walnut finial! In very short order, we had the perfect lamp for our living room and began singing praises of D&W! Our next lamp adventure started with the purchase of two mid-century modern teak lamps for our family room on eBay. The day they arrived, we cleaned them and took them to D&W. Once again, Amber was fantastic, demonstrating various harps and shades. She REALLY knows her lamp history, showing us what the lamps would have looked like in their day. This time we found the size, shape, fabric and rolled edge that we wanted, but all on different shades, so we had to custom order. While looking at the lamps, Amber noticed that one of them had a short in the socket. Being that these had aluminum sockets, we opted to get them both rewired with brass fittings. Typical re-wiring would be about $45, but we opted for the cloth-wrapped cords for a high end look. We were told it would be about 5 weeks for the shades to arrive, but four weeks later, Amber called to say the shades were in and the re-wiring was complete! We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them! We cannot say enough great things about D&W Lighting! Their service is unbelievable and their selection fantastic :) A must for anyone looking for lamps and accessories! read more

I just wanted to give a big shout out to D&W Lighting. Not only do they have a wide display of lamps and shades, they have GREAT customer service. I was looking for a large shade for a hanging light. They had a wide selection and I narrowed it down to two. I couldn't decide which of the two grey colors would match best in the room. They let me take both home to try before I bought it. They were able to install a light kit into the one I picked. However, it was months later when my project room was done and I went to install it, that I realized the installed kit was lacking several feet of cord. I no longer had the recite either. Somehow, the measurement was not conveyed right but the important thing is, that they not only fixed the problem, they did it immediately and without additional cost to me. They were able to look up my purchase and take care of right then and there. I was able to complete my room by adding the last touch of my lighting that day and it fits perfect in the room. Horrible experience. I dropped off 3 large vintage lights and was told they would be looked at and 6 weeks later, nothing. I called over 10 times and was told by the owner he would call me back in 15 min, on Monday, blablabla. Very unprofessional. Very disappointing. ...Obviously these other people who wrote reviews went to D&W Lighting during the week. My experience with the young man who works there on Saturdays has been anything but satisfying. I went in almost two months ago to order a fixture. Counting me there were three people in the store: he was completely overwhelmed. When it was finally my turn, I told him about the fixture I needed to buy. He looked helplessly around the store then said he didn't think they had anything there, but they could order one and call me when it came in. I asked him how much it would be, but he couldn't give me a price...so he just guessed. Then he wrote my name and phone number on a scrap of paper and said that they would call as soon as it came in. I called today, almost two months later, and got the same guy. When I asked if my fixture had come in yet he said he didn't have any record of it. He then went on (and on and on) about how he only worked there on Saturdays, etc. etc. If he is their only choice for a weekend employee, they would be better off just staying closed on Saturdays. read more

Is there a way to give a -5 star rating? I took a lamp to D&W 2 months ago. Asked for a conversion with 25' of cord for a hanging lamp. Asked for a specific chain (they had in their shop) and for the in line switch to be located 6 ft from the plug. After 4 trips and a lot of frustration -- I'm home to find the switch 6" from the plug. The chain? they 'couldn't find it'. So they substituted, without contacting me, and offered to paint it. Really? Further, they never called with changes, installed the diffuser on the TOP of the lamp, and never called to inform me that the lamp was ready for pick up. Don't go there unless you want to have a truly frustrating experience. read more

Needed some parts to do a customized repair of 3 pendent light fixtures, and I had pretty much given up hope of finding what I needed after searching the Web and a couple hardware/big box stores. Turns out I needed a couple special "hickies" (which I've probably spelled wrong), and they had some special candelabra bulb sockets that adapted nicely to what I was trying to accomplish. Staff was very knowledgeable and they had a huge collection of parts to make this work. Unfortunately, I left my wife in the lobby while I was working in the parts room, and they have a nice case of customized stone jewelry for her to look at. That cost me more than the fixture parts, but my wife assured me she got a great deal on what she bought. On the bright side, I don't have to shop for a Valentine's Day present... read more

Great job D&W! You've fixed a couple of lamps for me over the years--my favorite one is the "touch me" dimmer kind, and it is pretty much irreplaceable, as it's not made anymore. I brought in my expensive cut glass lamp that I needed to have a mount repaired for the "hurricane" style glass shade. I was told by the clerk at the front counter that I needed a 7" brass ring to hold the shade. They ordered the part and repaired the lamp. As they did not have a shade in stock to fit my lamp, I ordered one online. When it came in, I seated the shade onto the lamp "ring", only to find that the supports on the ring were mounted too high, and would not allow the shade to fit into the ring far enough to look good, and to be safe. I took my lamp back to D&W, asking what could be done, and their response was that this was the only ring available and nothing could be done. No repair, No return, No solution. I am out my money and have a lamp that is worse off now than when I took it in to them. I had asked them, the "experts", what could be done to fix my lamp and this was what they suggested to me. If it didn't work, it should be on them, not me, to be out the money, or at least offer a solution. They just said nothing could be done and showed me the door. I recently purchased a vintage iron chandelier. As the fixture needed rewiring and other small repairs I set out on a Monday morning for a local shop I had used previously, only to find it closed on Mondays, as was my second option. I discovered D & W lighting by chance and decided to drop in a take a look. I found the eclectic stock interesting and the friendly staff (Anna, in this case) immediately helpful. We discussed what I had in mind and looked at some of the materials that would be used for the needed repairs and I decided to leave the fixture in their hands. Within a month (this was during the Christmas holidays) I received a call that the fixture was ready for pickup. I was delighted with the result and felt the cost to be fair based on what was needed. Their recommendation for an electrician to hang the fixture turned out to be excellent as well...a shout out to Jason Hurley with Hurley's Electrical Service. I am so disappointed in my experience with D &W that I wanted to make sure others are aware to ask lots of questions before asking for custom work. Apparently I did not ask enough questions. In late August I took a floor table lamp in to make some changes. The lamp had 3 lights on a 3 way switch and I wanted 2 of them to become directional with gooseneck arms. It was well into September when I checked on the status and nothing had been done. They did not seem to have a clear picture of what I wanted and never bothered to call and ask. I was assured they would get right on it now that they understood I was also assured that this was an easy, quick, inexpensive fix. I called back three additional times to check status waiting several weeks in between calls and each time I was given a new excuse. It is now the middle of November and I have my lamp back but they removed the 3 way switch. One of the previous times that I called I was told they were waiting on a new 3 way switch. In addition, there was a glass shade that was on the lamp that was not returned. I never gave them permission to keep the glass. Before taking my lamp back I called to ask why there was not a 3 way switch and was rudely told to just bring it back in. I have also left a phone message asking for an explanation and they have never returned my call. Apparently I paid $90 to have 2 new sockets and my original 3 way switch removed but the switch was never to be removed. If you decide to have D&W work on your lamp make sure you have a firm price and exact description and time frame. They are very polite in the store so I felt I could trust them on their word but my advise is to get everything in writing!!! Better yet, if you want quality custom work done at a reasonable price, and in a timely manner go to Tipler's. read more
