Two years ago, we hired D'Ambra Construction to build a second story on our existing home. They did an amazing job, and I would highly recommend them. We were able to live in our home while the remodel was going on. They were professional, clean, and shared my vision of what I wanted to accomplish. D'Ambra did a room addition plus opened up our kitchen. We had an excellent experience. They: - were very clean. Everyday cleaned up. - were on-time. Our project had no delays. - were very professional and easy to work with. The owner and his son checked in many times to ensure everything was going well. They are pricey but well worth it. Our neighbor did a similar addition with a less expensive contractor and that guy cut a gas line which had to evacuate our street and didn't do their floor level - so they had to put in shutters instead of closet doors in their bedroom addition. We chose D'Ambra for a small addition (about 200 sqft). We extended two bedrooms and added a bathroom. We also added an attached patio cover (260 sqft)-which turned out beautiful (like those ones you see in the home improvement magazines you get in the mail every week)! We worked with Bill, who listened to our ideas and then designed it. We began the process in December, they had the permits done by the end of December and we broke ground at the beginning of January. They told us three months for the construction, and they were done and gone in exactly the time frame they promised. We had quite a bit a rain during these months, but everything was handled. They tarped our house and eased any of our worries about damage from rain storms. I was pregnant with twins at the time of our project. I delivered at the end of February and the babies were in the NICU for 5 weeks in the middle of the remodel. I mention this, first, because even being pregnant, this project was stress-free. We lived in our home the entire time. Second, we are not the kind of people who leave workers at our home when we are not there, but there were too many situations where we had to. Chris D'Ambra, the project manager, was there daily to check in with us and on the progress of the job. All of the workers were not only friendly but very trustworthy. They were very clean too. We were also preoccupied during a lot of the finishing touches, so on a few occasions I showed or texted Chris pictures of what I wanted and he made it happen. The biggest example of this was in our new bathroom. I wanted the new bathroom to look like a beach cottage. He coordinated everything from the beadboard to the subway tiles and fixtures to look just like a picture I had found. The custom made cabinet in the bathroom is also amazing. I wish all of my cabinets were of the same quality! The drawers glide smoothly and close with a gentle push. They delivered on everything promised and even helped us find people to complete a few projects outside of the remodel. We are very pleased with the work done for us by D'Ambra. I normally don't go out of my way to review companies I do biz with because many times it's too much trouble. However, because of my personal experience with D'Ambra Construction and the fact that I used reviews in helping my wife and I make our final decision to go with D'Ambra for our remodel, I felt it almost required on my part to do this to help others who might be fighting with their own decisions. We were planning on building a roughly 800 sq ft addition plus a kitchen remodel. We knew of D'Ambra for years having lived in the area for awhile. We decided on getting four bids from D'Ambra and three others. The funny thing about our experience was that our neighbor was in the market also. It was our projects that actually got us to get to know our neighbor whom we're now close friends with. But they didn't go with D'Ambra because they said they were about $9k more in their proposal than the guy they ended up going with. However, although D'Ambra was in fact the highest bid of the four, about $21k more from the closest bid (on a nearly $300k project), we went with them. Now, this is where it gets interesting and why it's important to really pay attention to who you're hiring. From day 1, Chris D'Ambra, the project manager who we worked hand in hand with throughout, held our hand and had some truly amazing ideas that we incorporated into our final product. Little things like wired audio throughout the house, camera systems installation, remotely controlled TV centers (the DVR equipment is in our main closet so the TVs throughout the house have no equipment to look at or make room for), surround sound placement and install, etc. He and his helper did all that for us for no cost. We just bought all the equipment he recommended. We really didn't know what we didn't know until we got into the building phase. There is so much that has to be done ahead of covering everything up that requires the eye of a true professional that cares about us and how our home ends up being. Chris and the entire D'Ambra team did that. What kind of price tag do you put on that? He personally walked us through tile and flooring decisions, not to mention paint colors. If we had an issue, even on a weekend, I just called him on his cell and he was there within an hour if needed. Now, our neighbor went with another local guy who promised the world. Well, all I heard was how the owner of the company just wanted his checks. Anything and everything was an extra. He told me once he was afraid to call him because he might be charged for the call. In the end, that $9k would have been money well spent he said. We were done in a little over four months, while our neighbor's project being half that size and scope took almost 11! And still to this day I hear how crappy some of the work was on his, all while admiring ours. He says his tile allowance was $2 a square foot. Seriously? Ours was $7. Go shop for tile and remember to add in the edge or trim pieces to that total. All of a sudden that $9k difference gets eaten up really quick. I can't tell you how important the things like these are that you don't even consider when you're looking mostly at proposal price differences. Things cost what they cost if you want it done right. The final bill came as a shock, not because of D'Ambra, but because of us. We did in fact request certain things throughout that were above and beyond our contract allowances - which were generous. D'Ambra had no profit markups on any of the extras because they gave us all the bills they incurred showing the cost. It really is amazing what things in the industry cost and justifies why these projects are so expensive. So, trust me, and all the others that you read (all are positive) and spend the money to do it right because you'll end up getting more than you think with all the help to truly make your home and home, not just another project for the company you hire. read more

My husband and I used D'Ambra Inc. (D'Ambra Construction) to add 1,280 sq feet to our one story home. It consisted of a hugh master bedroom, walk in closet, bathroom, Guest bedroom, another bathroom, lawndry room, den, wet bar with sink, cabinets, place for refrigerator. We have to say that this company deserves an A+ Rating. Their proffessionism was well beyond what I could have ever expected. You hear horror stories on contractors...well not with this company. I would recommend this company to anyone and everyone if you are planning on adding on to your home. From the very beginning they were on top of it. I always had a response to my calls or emails immediately. Chris was our project manager and you could not have asked for anyone better. He was amazing. Like I said, anything we needed he was there or on the phone. The people that work for D'Ambra were also fantastic. Again, I have to compliment the framers Tony, Ben and Able; they were extremely curtious and anything that I asked of them was taken care of. Jeff was another employee who was on the job to make sure everything was taken care of and areas where cleaned at end of day. When you have a hugh project like this it makes it so nice to be dealing with super nice people. I have to say...I miss all the people that worked for us. We are extremely pleased with the finished addition and if anyone would like to see or talk to us we would welcome phone calls or having you come by to see the workmanship. If you are looking to do any kind of home contruction improvements, or to build a home from the ground up, we highly recommend this local, family owned company. 7 1/2 years ago, we decided to do a large addition to our 1965 Huntington Beach tract home, which would include a spacious new guest room, bath, and kitchen. We interviewed at least 5 local contractors, which included going out and looking at work done, checking references, etc. After doing many hours of research and homework, we decided to go with D'Ambra Construction. When we told our friends and family the plans we had for construction and remodeling, they all had their own horror stories to share about their remodeling experiences. We were a little anxious even though we were confident that this company would meet our needs better than the others. That anxiety was quickly put to rest as our project moved ahead. We were told it would take 3 months to complete, and they delivered our new home in that time frame. Our project started early in 2005, which was one of the rainiest winters on record. Each and every day, we had someone working on our home, no excuses, no delays. At the end of each day, a clean up crew arrived to clear debris and sweep clean the construction site. Our workers were all very considerate of our neighbors, did not yell and blare their stereo music like we have seen on other sites, and always left our home in order as the project moved ahead. We were promised that if there were any "surprises" when they opened up our walls, the bid amount we had agreed to would be honored, and they would not be asking for additional money to rectify the problem, which is a common practice by those other contractors who give lower bids. Well, turns out, this old 1965 tract home had alot of "suprises" and D'Ambra stood by their promise to deliver what they had promised. This involved bringing in structural engineers who were able to re-configure the joists and venting so everything would work perfectly, which was I am sure, a great additional expense that D'Ambra absorbed. Chris D'Ambra, the owner's son, was our go-to guy for the entire process. He was at the site every day to make sure the contractors were completing the work in a timely and excellent manner. I must say that they only use licensed and top rated electricians, plumbers, framers, etc. on their projects. Their attention to quality shows, and many have worked for D'Ambra for years. Our cabinet maker for the kitchen and bath was a true artisan, and listened to us completely, delivering some beautiful custom accents that we just love. The city of Huntington Beach building department also knows and appreciates the level of work that D'Ambra delivers. That was obvious when inspectors came out each time for the permitting process. We love, love, love our home now, and have loved it for the past almost 8 years. One final note, a few days ago we had a small electrical issue, that would not at all be uncommon after heavy use over that period of time. We did not know of any reputable electricians, so, knowing that D'Ambra only uses the best of the best, we decided to call them, just for a reference, so we could get it looked at, at our own expense. I was immediately put through to the owner, Dennis D'Ambra, who told me that he would be sending Chris out to look at it. Chris not only came out to see us that day, but he arranged for an electrician to come troubleshoot the problem. After checking all the breakers and possible issues, he identified an issue with a socket and replaced it. This would have been hundreds and hundreds of dollars for the time spent and work done, but D'Ambra took care of it, no charge. We can't say enough about this company. They have been in business for over 50 years. They have a permanent office/ showroom in Huntington Beach, and with this kind of service, commitment and integrity, they will be around for another 50 years to standby and guarantee everything they touch on the job.
