It's clear that this place needs improvement. But it's hard to do that when they are consistently understaffed. I feel horrible for the staff because they are overworked, they are juggling a huge location, and none of the customers here are ever satisfied. I usually come here on Sundays in the morning. It's usually filled with about 10 customers and be maybe two staff members. I'm not sure what the crowds are like on Saturday night but it always seems like they ran through the store. Products aren't always stocked. Things are generally placed all over the place. So finding the things you need is somewhat of a hunt but generally always in the same area that it is supposed to be. So naturally that brings some frustration but the store is huge and spacious that they have a lot of alternatives to keep you happy. You'll also find some very niche items like firewood, knee braces, elder care supplies, at home testing kits and more. Lastly parking is fantastic. They have a lot which they share with a couple of side businesses. read more

*** BEWARE: THIS PHARMACY MESSES UP PRESCRIPTIONS *** my doctor prescribed me a medication and at first, I got a text message from CVS saying they were out and I would need to wait for them to get it in. This seems normal and it does happen sometimes, but it took days to get a very basic med. then I proceeded to get text messages when it came in for about four days and I waited because there was a second prescription that I wanted to pick up at the same time. The text messages were incessant and they said that the prescription would be available until 11/11. I went in today, November 1, and they did not have the prescription. Further, they have my home address, incorrect, even though dozens of orders at this point have been placed by providers for my current address. Just don't go here. SCAM ALERT - DO NOT BUY GIFT CARDS FROM CVS! CVS knowingly stocks gift cards that are compromised by scammers. I bought $250 in gift cards at this location, only to find out they were fraudulent and unusable. CVS took my money, charged my card, and then refused to refund me - even with my receipt and proof of purchase. The store manager even admitted this is a KNOWN ISSUE and that other customers have been scammed, yet they still refuse to secure their gift card section or take action. CVS is complicit in this scam by continuing to sell compromised cards while hiding behind the card issuer. They will not help you. They will not refund you. They will let you lose your money. I'm moving my pharmacy and all purchases elsewhere. If you shop here, NEVER buy their gift cards unless you want to burn your money. read more

They don't know how to confirm insurance policies and had the audacity to tell me I was "kicked off" my employer paid health insurance I've had for over a decade and couldn't get a med filled. Typical CVS store, I mean who would come here and buy anything else besides prescriptions drugs and maybe beauty products, but yes they do sell a little bit of everything, not a lot comparing to bigger size CVS locations, their ice cream fridge is small and very limited on brand, they have nothing at toys, they do have a larger liquors section, I guess people live here just love to drink and party, well that's OB for you, anyway the parking also not free, only 45 minutes due to their location near the beach, people will try to take advantage of their parking lot, that makes sense, other than that you can always spend less than 45 minutes to get in, maybe not to pick up your medications, or it will be $10/hr read more

If I could give this location zero stars I would. The pharmacy is a joke. For the past 6 months they have been late on refilling my medication (that I can NOT AFFORD TO NOT HAVE). They say they are ordering it. It still doesn't come in. My symptoms start to become unbearable. They offer no substitute of any other brand that is suitable. They send me to another location that had an error in the system so they also don't have it. In order to prevent this I ask the pharmacy to call the other location to ensure I don't go through the same thing. I wait about 20 minutes and she's telling me the locations not answering. After I told her I was told my medication would be coming in this Monday and it didn't. I was asked why I wasn't contacted and she said it's not our job to contact you. You should have called us....but they don't answer the phone!!' Quite ironic and terrible customer service if the pharmacist can't even get a hold of each other!!! I transferred all of my prescriptions to Rite aid. I walked in...they were super helpful!! And while they didn't have my brand they offered an alternative and filled it same day!!! It requires you to leave a voicemail where it states that it will give you a return call within an hour, but I've called four times about my insulin pen needles and I'm completely out and this pharmacy makes me feel so unsafe, I am so confused why no one is returning my calls read more

God forbid the auto checkout doesn't understand that you're trying to make a purchase, you'll be hearing "please wait, an employee is on their way" repeat like a broken record till the cows come home. They may employ one single person. If that person happens to be doing anything remotely resembling a task, chances are low they'll stop to help you with anything else. This is the opposite of how a business should be run, and a shining example to why Ocean Beach generally turns its back on large corporations. This is the worst pharmacy I have ever gone to. The pharmacist and the rest of their staff look unhappy and as if they are being tortured to work there even though pharmacists make over 100 K a year. I came in with my prescription, the rude asian American pharmacist (wish I knew his name) mentioned it will be 30 minutes. I walked around OB, got a coffee and came back 40 min later to hear from a tech that the pharmacist went on his lunch break and hasn't even completed the prescription. If you are going to lunch then why in the world would you tell me 30 minutes??? On top of that, their unorganized staff only saw one of my prescriptions, and lost the more urgent medication for me "lying that they only received one order". But somehow they send me a text that my prescription magically appeared the next day. Try to avoid this location at all costs! read more

Avoid this if possible! Went in for a passport photo for my baby and they just keep me waiting. I waited patiently because the line was pretty long. After 20 minutes and once they told me there were only two of them and they would help me when they could (for the second time) I knew no one was ever going to help me! I mean if they were going to assist me once there was no line, we'll that was never going to happen. At the end I had to go home and I couldn't even try other places because baby fell asleep. Up! Up with people! You meet 'em wherever you go Up! Up with People! They're the best kind of folks we know. If more people were for people All people everywhere There'd be a lot less people to worry about And a lot more people who care. I usually hate walking into a CVS. I was always more a Longs Drugs or Walgreens kinda guy to begin with. In most CVS pharmacies that I've reluctantly (usually) walked into - I might have heard a "hi" as I walked into the store but that's about it. Not this location. This one is special. The first time we walked in here everyone greeted us. I mean every employee said at least "hi" if not offering to help us with what we were looking for. And when we did have questions the employees were very helpful - even far above and beyond. At first I was almost kind of creeped out by the level of friendliness this place had - like maybe it was part of a weird cult where they all drank the magic kool aid that made them super shiny happy people. But I've been there again a few times since and find it pretty cool that there is such an uplifting environment here. Not sure if it's corporate policy decided back at CVS HQ that all employees need to put out this level of friendliness and positive energy or not. I figure if that IS the case then when the memos went out to all employees - most locations just got the policy handed out to each employee on a little sticky note whereas these folks here each got the giant full-sized wall posters. The store itself - pretty much has all the usual CVS pharmacy suspects but they also have a number of OB related t-shirts and touristy knick-knacks perfect for the out of town friends that want something OB related to bring back home. This store has an unusually huge parking lot (for this part of town I mean) that also offers paid parking for five bucks an hour. Yeah - pricey but I usually hoof it over here anyway. Right on the corner of Santa Monica and Cable streets. I think next time I'm really feeling down in the dumps I'll hit this place FIRST for a candy bar or whatever and hope some of that cheer rubs off on me instead of heading straight for the bars on Newport. read more

I moved back to ocean beach in April and have frequented this cvs on a regular basis for shopping needs and for all my prescriptions. That all ended as of today. Cvs is too cheap to hire a security guard and apparently now expects their employees to take on the role despite being severely understaffed as it is. I was acosted and harassed while shopping and when I stood up for myself was offered nothing even close to an apology or even an acknowledgement of wrong doing. Poor CVS employees have to put up with snobby Obecians, like myself, who love to turn our noses up to big businesses. And, yes, we're putting our money into corporate pockets that are already bursting, but, hey! If CVS is going to move in and try to be good for the neighborhood, these employees are totally doing it: - They left the character of the building intact: weird mural on the wall on Santa Monica Ave and kept the huge windows! It's actually pretty nice looking and CLEAN inside! - Most of the employees are genuinely nice. And unlike Rite Aid close by, when there are a few people in line, they actually put in effort to call up another cashier to help out. - They have deals on some things and a point system if you shop there enough to keep your business. - Parking is free while you're there (to the person who wrote the review above - if you are just going in, I don't think you have to check in at the meter thing, I think you just park and go right in; it's a separate company than Rite Aid which is probably why the employees didn't know). Best of all: I bought a 12 pack of beer there. We drank 4 of them (it was a variety pack - had to try each one!) and each one was bad. I've never done this, and was kind of embarrassed, but after spending $20 on a good beer (Stone!), I didn't want to just throw it away. I brought the rest of the beer back in and we found that some were expired and others were expiring soon. I didn't keep the receipt, but they STILL gave me a gift card without any grief (and would have just given me credit back with a receipt). I paid CASH, drank 4 of the beers, and they STILL took responsibility since we found some expired. Then later as I was shopping, Carol (a manager I think) found me in the store and offered me ANOTHER gift at the same value of the beer because she recognized that I was in the store often. I don't have many prescriptions but somehow two of the pharmacists know my full name, I appreciate that. When I have urgently needed a script they do what they can to help, and are thorough in counseling if it's a new script. If you need to call the pharmacy there is sometimes a bit of a wait but I partially attribute this to the fact that the nearby RiteAid is an absolute disaster, so I'm happy to wait on their service. Store is clean, staff is friendly, and dogs are allowed. read more

This new CVS pharmacy has a few kinks it still needs to work out. For example, the parking situation. The lot is paid parking, but you get one hour free if you shop at CVS. However when you put your stall number in the machine, there's no option for one hour free at CVS AND it's prepay. When I asked an employee inside she wasn't sure how it works either. Secondly, more often than not the employee (although very enthusiastic to help me) didn't know where stuff was. I've asked something as simple as a thermometer to something as complicated as dermal gloves. I still have no idea where the simple thermometers are located, only the child ones. And for the gloves, they got me to the right aisle, but then told me they didn't have it when it was right in front of us, just in a different box than the picture I showed them. Lastly, I've been disappointed in the pharmacy. One pharmacist wasn't familiar with their computer system and accidentally froze my insurance account because she picked the wrong insurance on her computer. It took me 2 hours to get my prescription in because I had to wait on the phone to get my insurance account unflagged. They have great intentions, but still a lot to learn. This is still my go to drugstore, and I'll update the review when I see improvement. read more

I used to go to the target pharmacy but target switched to cvs. this location is really close to my house and very convenient. When I switched my prescriptions over to this location, there were some issues but they were promptly resolved and the pharmacist was extremely apologetic and helpful. I think he even called me twice after I left for updates on the medications! I recently stopped by to pick a medication up and the pharmacist was so helpful. I was having some other issues (hives) and she was very informative with suggesting otc medications for it. She really took the time to explain things and was genuinely interested in my well being. I also stop by here a lot to grab small grocery items and other necessities and the staff is always really nice. **update** came back with empty bottle because it was my only option--it being the weekend and no way to get my prescription. They told me my dr denied it (she just didn't accept it yet--very different) and they couldn't give it to me. So here I am, two days without vital medicine to my health. Awesome. read more

I am extremely disgusted with this pharmacy. I call to refill a prescription and am told by Veronica that it expired on 8/20/16. I explained I was having an asthma emergency and need an inhaler. Instead of being helpful, Veronica continued explaining how illegal it was to fill this prescription. I asked if they could contact my Dr.'s office for a second time, she rudely replies, " like I told you before, I already faxed it over to your Dr." I then asked for the pharmacists name. She said Katie. I asked her for a last name, she placed me on hold. While I was waiting for Veronica to get me Katie the pharmacists last name, she hung up on me. When I called back, I asked for both names. She said Katie would not give me her last name and I need to call her back in 30 minutes when she's back from her lunch if I want it. I re-stated what she told me and she said that was correct, if I want her last name, I have to call back. Unprofessional. It actually calmed my asthma symptoms down. Veronica got me worked up. She and Katie are extremely unprofessional in my opinion. read more

I was actually pretty disappointed when I found out that CVS was going to take over this abandoned building. I was really hoping for a Sprouts or Trader Joe's... or really anything else since there's already a Rite Aid a few blocks away. But man, this new CVS is sooooo much better than the old Rite Aid -- possibly because of the "new is better than old" factor (seriously, OB, you need more new stuff). But it's also cleaner, has a better selection for similar prices, and better looking employees! Only thing Rite Aid has over CVS in OB is longer hours. read more
