I don't write reviews but this time I have to. I know their prices are great compared to many places but TERRIBLE customer service. The guy Tanh or Tom (he uses different names) he got my hair wet, made me sit on the chair and then told me he can't cut my hair and that I should go to another place. I just showed him some examples of layered hair cuts for a minute. He was very rude and I was in shock after he got my hair wet and then told me he can't cut my hair. I think he is very moody and aggressive. He basically kicked me out. Like I couldn't believe. I've never seen anything like this. He cut my hair before. I went there because another friend of mine goes here because of their reasonable pricing but this was how he treated me on my second visit. This was 4-5 months ago. I couldn't even bring myself to write down this review. I felt terrible. You may get a cut or you may be kicked out just for showing how you want your hair to be cut. This review has been long overdue... Ba has been cutting my hair and my families hair for 20 years! I've been going there for so long before Yelp came along that it never crossed mh mind to review them until today. When we started going there we only had two sons. We had our 3rd in 2000, so I think we started going there in 1999. It's not a fancy place, but it has served it's purpose well for us through two decades. We used to go get 4 haircuts at the same time, so we would have Tracy also. It goes without saying that if we were not happy w our haircuts, we could easily go elsewhere. Ba knows my hair well so I just sit down and chat. I just started w Ba, so stuck with her throughout. She is very 'smiley' and likes to laugh - she is always smiling and laughing. Maybe this is the secret to anti-aging or she discovered the fountain of youth, because she looks almost exactly like she did when i first started going there. It's almost uncanny. I wish i had a picture of her 20 years ago to show you. The reason I am not giving 5 stars is because the decor and pictures could use some renovation. They could maybe add a TV in the waiting area. Reasonably priced haircuts. I recommend making an appointment. I arrived on a weekday right when they opened and there was already a line. Granted it was a Friday on a holiday weekend so maybe that was the reason. I asked the staff about their busiest times and they said its random and that is best to just make an appointment just in case. I've had my hair cut twice, each time by a different person. I showed them a picture and they replicated it pretty well. For men there is only one male hairstylist, Tom, but all of the staff can cut men's hair. This is the worst haircut I've ever had in my life. I got one of the guys, and he came really recommended and so I figured it was worth a shot. I myself am a licensed cosmetologist and so maybe I'm a little harsher in my reviews, but let's go ahead and review this place. 1. He did not give me any sort of consultation. Did not ask me what I wanted, and at the shampoo bowl did not use any conditioner at all, did not explain which shampoo he was using. When he brushed it out, he brushed from the roots to the ends, which is a big no no with someone who has long hair. It tears the hair out. 2. He cut my hair the absolute wrong way. The techniques he used are also a big no no in the industry. You cut vertical not horizontal, he cut so unprofessionally and it creates holes in the haircut. It was uneven because of this. I wanted bangs, and I didn't even get bangs at all. I wanted to keep length, and he cut it to my shoulders all while promising me he could keep it long. I have a mullet now. My entire thickness is gone, and it's extremely thin, emaciated. 3. He TORE OUT MY GREYS like he was pulling up weeds. Also a big no no. Literally, tore them out by the root. Pulled them out. I love my greys, and he did not ask me if I wanted to keep them and you DO NOT EVER pull a clients hair out like that. 4. He used no heat protectant when blowdrying and it fried my ends that were just freshly cut. You could get better haircuts in a Russian prison. read more

Tom is a very skillful barber but the problem is his co worker women, who seems not getting as many customers as Tom because most likely she is not as skilled but now I understand another reason. She is rude and seems unhappy that she has to help her coworker Tom's appointment while she is not getting any customers. I visited there to make an appointment with Tom and then wanted to change it to another time. Tom was busy and this Asian lady had to help. I've been here three times and I love it! Where can you get a precision, stylish cut nowadays.. for $12? This place may not be for everybody, but if you're looking for no-frills, clean, cash-only facility, this is it! I always ask for Tracy and she always does a great job. Been going here for the past year since one of my best friends told me about Tom. Dude is great and can cut men's hair ! I have a weird head and I seem to always have a hard time getting the right cut especially being a veteran. People always somehow end up with a high and tight even when I show a picture of the cut I want. Went thru 20 people (men And women) before finally trying his service last yeAr. I say this because.. 1) I asked her to only dye my roots to a shade darker (medium brown) than the rest of my hair to achieve a more ombré look 2) I asked for a few layers The result? I had almost black hair all over, many layers which I wouldn't have minded if it wasn't so asymmetrical. I pointed out the dark hair and the obvious (1inch, no exaggeration) difference from my left to right and asked for a redo or discount. On my quest to find an "affordable" hair salon, I came across reviews for Cutting image on yelp. I really can't see myself spending $35+ (plus tip) on haircuts, especially in this economy. I still believe that I can find bargains for comparably expensive products or services. Eh, maybe i'm delusional but it doesn't hurt to save a few bucks. I got my hair cut by Ba, they squeezed me in right before closing. Phew! I asked for layers and side swept bangs. Layers were not bad, but I think she thinned out my hair too much (I have thick hair so 95% of salons I go to LOVEE thinning out my hair). I made a mistake asking her to cut my bangs though, but it's no biggie - i'll just grow them out and cut them myself. I find that only 2 hairdressers I've been to over my life have actually cut my bangs to my liking, so I didn't expect much from her. Cut was $14, before tip - LOVE the price! She was texting while cutting my hair and sometimes would step away for five mins just to text. i wanted a simple trim. my previous style was short and asymmetrical on purpose and now that i want to grow out my hair i just wanted the two sides to be even again. While she did make my hair even, she also decided to layer my hair. which i explicitly did not ask for. while she was cutting my hair she spun me around so that i could not see the mirror so i wasnt really sure what was going on. i have heard people with decent experience with thanh but the lack of quality and service consistency makes this place a risky place to get your hair cut. read more

Excellent place to get a men's haircut. I've been going here for quite a while now. I had other places cut my hair and have had many bad experiences with them. I don't change hair styles and that is the thing I am particular with. The last places I went to were inconsistent even after describing and showing a picture of how my haircut to be like. One place (which I won't mention) cut my hair in a military style even after I specifically told what I wanted. I know San Diego is a military town but everybody doesn't work in the military, you know. Now even if I live up in North County I drive down to Mira Mesa just to get the best cut I've ever had. I came in today for a haircut around 12:30pm and the place was totally empty. There wasn't someone at the front table, but there was a sign-in sheet so I added myself onto it. I looked around and saw that all three ladies were in the corner eating lunch, and they said that I had to wait a few minutes. So I sat down and waited in the waiting area, but a few minutes turned into 15 minutes. They all took their time chatting and eating away while I waited and played on my phone. Finally, one of the ladies finished and started to cut my hair. She did a good job and gave me a few pointers on how to style my new layers. She took the time to layer, thin out, and blow dry my hair - which came out to be $17. I'm the type of girl that gets up in the morning, takes a shower, combs my hair, and then rolls into work. I believe in maximizing my sleep. I look presentable and cute, but it's obvious that I didn't spend hours in front of the mirror in the morning extending my eyelashes. Cutting Image is a perfect place for me. I don't believe in paying over $30 for a haircut. I've been to a couple of $60-$80 places before , and quite frankly saw no difference between those haircuts and $20-$30 places. The difference is in the treatment -- an expensive stylist will talk to you and make you feel pampered. The cheaper places will be silent or talk to the other stylist. But seriously, if I wanted to have someone to talk to I'd call up a friend or covince my PPO to cover therapy so that I only have to pay $10 / hr for a person to hear me ramble. I got a good haircut for $12. TWELVE DOLLARS. My stylist made some suggestions, some of which I took. They're not very rigorous about getting all your little bits of hair off you afterwards, but whatever, the cut is good. I am totally returning here. I live 20 miles away and even after taking into account gas, this place is still cheap. (Also, there are a bunch of Vietnamese stores nearby to check out and eat). This is sooo much better than Supercuts because the stylists there are there to stay -- so you know they're going to give you a good haircut to get your return business. read more

I think I had the same experience as Grace C. I just wanted to keep my length, but have my hair relayered and bangs done... Basically I just wanted my hair to get cleaned up but more got chopped than I wanted and my end cut is really not me at all.... I made the mistake of not going with my regular haircutter because they couldn't take me as a walk in so I went to yelp for help!!!! How could 4 1/2 stars be wrong!? Their store is facing Mira Mesa Boulevard directly across from a Jack-in-the-Box, so you should park in the east parking lot. I'm going through all the trouble to tell you where it is because I don't want you to give up trying to find it. (It's a little frustrating walking around on a hot day trying to find the storefront) Before I start with everything I want to let you know they only take cash or personal check. That being said, my husband loves this place! It only cost him $12 to get his haircut and the guy there (Thanh) does a very nice job. He really makes sure to get the sides even. Hubby has never had to to go back and get it fixed since he's been coming here as opposed to when he used to go to those chain stores when he would constantly come home dissatisfied and disappointed. As a matter of fact, the last time I put down that much money on a salon visit, I came out with the worst haircut I've ever had in my life (can we say Asian mullet?). With this in mind, I decided to visit Cutting Image, a small barber shop located behind the Mr. Wasabi on Mira Mesa with a prominently displayed "Haircuts: $12" in the window. Much to my surprise, I came out with a cute bob for under $16 (with tip) that was much better than what you can even expect at Supercuts for $20. Thuy was the stylist who cut my hair, and she managed to replicate the photos I brought in for her pretty well. I wouldn't come here to try out that hot new hairstyle that all the fashion mags are saying are the rage, but they do a pretty decent job cutting and maintaining relatively safe hairstyles. The lady I approached looked at me and said bangs would not be a good fit and it would be too much work to fix them everyday. I ended up not getting anything because I was annoyed by her statement. About 4 days ago I already had my hair cut from another salon, and didn't like how it turned out. I wanted to fix it, but the people I normally go to are either gone or just too expensive so I looked around on Yelp for a good affordable place. Lo and behold, I came across Cutting Edge. The reviews were all good, so I tried 'em out. First of all, while this might not appeal to other people, I loved the fact that it was just a walk-in, sit down and wait your turn kind of place, not the fancy schmancy place where you have to wait days for your appointment. The nice lady (I wish I got her name) called me, asked what I wanted, and went on to do it. Less than 10 minutes later, I had a fabulous cut that I knew would look good days after the salon visit because there was no shampooing/blowdrying involved at all. She fixed the blunt edges from my previous hair cut and even added a nice texture to my hair. The best part? $12 + $2 tip! read more

I was told yes, but they "don't cut [MY] TYPE OF PEOPLE'S KINKY HAIR" and to "GO TO A BLACK HAIR SALON SOMEWHERE DOWN THE FREEWAY". I was desperate to have my hair trimmed for an upcoming event, so I continued to beg them to trim it. I explained I did not want it styled in any way other than a quick trim with their scissors because I cannot see the back of my head to be able to cut it evenly myself. I am very upset! I understand their reservations due to a lack of experience with "my people's kinky hair" if I had walked in with my hair not straightened. Yes there are people who complain they felt a non customer service vibe here. To be honest, all of the staff, ainglish ain't their mommy's tongue. Cut them some slack. I asked to cut my layers a bit shorter; however, after the cut was done I found that my hair is shorter and in a different style than it was originally was. i've had the pleasure of coming here twice to get my hairy underarms waxed. I was literally in&out of there in 12.5 minutes flat. It took me longer to find parking in that mega-mini mall than it did to get my pits waxed. the lady even took the time to pluck all the stragling hairs. my waxed pits would have made a bald man look like he needed a haircut. i was tired of paying $50 for a hair cut when half the time i leave the salon feeling 'meh' so i decided that i would rather risk having that feeling if i was paying $20 or less. i was specifically looking for a place that cuts asian hair. after looking on yelp, i decided to make an appointment with the male stylist. i walk in, there are only 2 people working, both asian, and i'm the first customer. he wets my hair, asks me how short i want it (5 inches off), if i want layers (a little) and proceeds to cut. given that i was paying $14, i expected him to spend like 15 minutes, but he ended up spending around 35 minutes and asked me how i liked it along the way. his English is not perfect, but i was certainly able to communicate what i wanted to him. he trims my side bangs and proceeds to blow dry my hair. afterwards he rings me up on the cash register and i have to ask him where to put the tip. by the time i was done, there were a few people waiting for a cut. will definitely be coming back here for all my cuts. read more
