My Lolo (grandpa) had really good hair when he past away so I want to make sure my hair is healthy because everything else about me is not that great =P. Cash only place. Been like that for soo long, you would think they would update on that, but yeah. what ever works for them. I know other people might have bad experiences, i had a couple of friends come here when i told them too and they didn't like it. So just test it out. Came in to get my layers to be cut shorter. I was content with the style and length of my hair. I asked to cut my layers a bit shorter; however, after the cut was done I found that my hair is shorter and in a different style than it was originally was. The lady who helped told me that she cutted textured layers in my hair and made my hair shorter because it suits me. I found this place using yelp. My first time here and there wasn't much of a wait so I just gave my name and waited to be called. The manager Dee took good care of me. It was nice to see more Hispanic people in this area so from one Latina to another. She did a great job at what to do with my hair. She gave me suggestion that gave me a new look I'm enjoying now. She put some leave in cream that I wish I could remember but it's doing wonderful for my hair now. Price was right and gave her a good tip. I would recommend anyone to come here. When my hairdresser missed work for many days and I needed a haircut really bad, I decided to try Thanh at Cutting Image based on Yelp's reviews. He was both methodical and meticulous, first cut my hair section by section, then textured it section by section. (Wow! I haven't had this done to my hair in a long long time.) My hair looked nice immediately after the cut, but didn't look as good after being slept on. (I don't shampoo my hair every day.) Now, a few weeks later, it's grown out a bit and started to look good every day. For the price, I've never found anyone who did better than Thanh. However, my regular hairdresser, though she charges twice as much, still makes my hair more manageable and more stylish. read more

For me, a $12 haircut meant that they didn't wet my hair - just spritzed it here & there - and it meant that the gal didn't take the time to listen & discern what I was requesting. Wound up with a pretty awful way-too-short cut that's still lingering these months later. At some point during the process, she turned me around and I said "wow, that's pretty short!" I have been going here for my hair cut for the last two years and have been happy with their service. They charge me $12 to cut my hair and layer it and I style it myself at home. Other saloons have charged me as much as $35 for the same hair cut. Once I did not have cash with me and I asked her if that would be okay to bring the money during the next week and she agreed. I came here about 10 minutes right before their closing time, they were somewhat nice about and let me come in. I thought these people were nice. But my haircut was so rushed they finished in 5 minutes. It didnt look very nicely. Then i had a friend who runs a barber shop in another area look at my hair, he said they ripped me off. This was better than I expected, to say in short. I had an appointment at 10 when they opened and I had to wait behind a walk-in, but I was in no rush so I didn't mind. Another stylist came in, apologized for the wait, and quickly sat me down. For $16, for long, thick hair, she spritzed my hair with water (no shampoo wash), and efficiently cut my hair back into long layers. She answered the phone several times while cutting my hair, but it didn't affect the outcome. Not the best haircut you'll ever get, but definitely a good find for bang for your buck. read more

I've been coming to get my haircut at Cutting Image for about 10 years (off and on - when I'm not attempting to cut my own hair). Great service and they do an excellent job for the $12 price tag. I usually go in on a Sat/Sun and rarely have to wait more than 5-10 minutes. Between the 3 women and 1 man stylist I would have to say I have enjoyed my experience with all. Some converse more than others which is nice. Give them a try, I've seen them give great female cuts as well. read more

I've been coming here for about three years and every time I don't come here, I regret it. The atmosphere is really quiet and they tend to just talk to each other, but for me that's fine. I don't like having the tell-me-your-life-story kind of thing. But they take care of me for my hair. I have typical really straight and thick asian hair and they really understand what my hair will do with certain styles and cuts. They just know what's best for my head. I usually bring in a picture reference and that always helps. I have also gotten my eyebrows done here. They're usually pretty good about cleaning you up and stuff but they tend to do my eyebrows a lot thinner than what I like so I just do it on my own now. read more

my experience was horrible. Do not go here. it may sound like I am overreacting but I'm not. here is why: -first the haircut they gave me was horrible. I even showed them a picture of what i wanted it and what they gave me was nothing alike. -they gave me a bowl cut!! I did not even ask for this and its uneven. some strands are longer than other. -They also cut it too short -their costumer service was horrible. While she was cutting my hair, she was talking to the other stylist about my hair. They won't stop giving "judgy eyes." I have been a loyal client to this salon since 2003 and always enjoy getting my haircut with Ba/Catherine. When I relocated to Washington DC and Philadelphia (2008-2010), I still returned for a haircut on my visits. Now that I currently live in Los Angeles, I return once a month. If the stylists' are eating, so what? If they take their time, who cares? If there is no professionalism, big deal. If the salon isn't that clean, so let it be. For $12 a cut, what do you expect? Keep in mind that this is not the John Dellaria Salon in NYC, the Giuseppe Franco Salon in Beverly Hills, nor is it the Hair By Danyel Nicole in Chicago. The stylists at Cutting Image are not veteran stylists' to the movie stars, the San Diego socialites, nor do they make the rounds in Beverly Hills, NYC, Miami, and Boston. But they always have a fresh perspective as hair seems to be their complete passion. I'll give nothing but compliments and don't think you will be disappointed. I've been getting my hair cut by Thanh, the male stylist, for about seven years now and he's ushered me through a couple different hair styles now, each of which I was more satisfied with than the last. When I sported the obligatory pre-pubescent Beiber cut, he really knew how to layer it. When I wanted to cut it short, he gave me a better-looking style than I ever expected, one I didn't even know my thick straight hair was capable of. I've recommend Thanh to a few of my friends, all of which are now regular customers. I dread the day when I move out of San Diego and have to find someone who is even half as good. Since I a m in a hurry, just want a simple haircut, and never been there, I just stayed until they told me it's my turn. When I sat down, the lady shampooed my hair like just she don't care. When it's time to have my hair cut and asked what I want, I said I just want straight cut and have just little layered on the front only. She cut my hair but she pay more attention to what her mouth says and the next co-employee next to her! Arrrg! Duh? She cut me hair so fast like she don't care how it looks like! Chop! Chop! Chop! She layered my front hair so fast and she did not even do my to just do a small layers. When it was done the first time. It did not look right. So I asked her to make it even. She asked me again why and then made an about face like she does not care about my answer. While she keeps on insisting. She did the same thing of cut, kind of choppy at the back. When she was done, or I thought it was done, I said that's okay now. In my head I had enough of this. Before I could put my hand up and said, lady stop!, she started butchering my front hair to have even shorter layers. I have never encounter this kind of butcher lady. When I was about to pay and wanted to leave. She did not even say sorry no credit. She just irritatingly said, "we only accept cash". I feel violated and I feel like I paid someone to butcher my hair. I told my close friend about it and she had the same experience. She chopped her hair. But she gots the guts to say stop. She only allow herself to made it halfway and made it correct it to another hair shop. Within thirty minutes yesterday after the haircut, I went to another one. And they said that it's botched up. They can tell the hair at the back is butchered work. They said they can't do nothing about my front hair layers cuz it's already layered so small. There's nothing that I can do but wait for two or three months to get my esteem back. I'm warning you guys. They should put a sign there at the door says "Have your hair butchered at your own risk" . They should fire they employees, especially that cut my hair. And oh, she did not give my receipt and just took my cash. Now I can't get her name. For the longest time they gave great haircuts, great blow outs afterward. i was very happy with their service, however the past three times, they have given terrible haircuts, no shampoo, and left my hair wet. I have a phobia of hair salons because almost every experience i have had has been a bad experience. So decided to try this place out after reading some yelps. I went in with no appointment and waited for about 15-20 mins. I asked for a layer trim and a change in my part. I guess i wasnt specific because he gave me long layers which is what i hate. I was expecting short layers to keep my length. Instead i got a thinned out "rachel shag". i gasped when he showed the back of my head because it was really choppy layers. I paid $15 and left very regretful. this has only increased my dislike of hair salons but i try again next time with a 3-d picture of the specific haircut that i want. read more

I wish I could give a better review because the people at this place are nice. This was the second time I came here. The first time was quite a while ago and I almost forgot how it was. My husband really likes Tom (the only male stylist), he has been coming here for a while. I am going to start a new job in the new year, so I decided to have my hair trimmed. I told Tom to keep my original style with layers, trim my hairs but leave 1.5 inches below my ears. When he finished the cut and blow my hair dry, my hair is very short, just below my ears, and the entire style looks like a mushroom. It was neat, but with a very unnatural looking. All of a sudden my memory of the frustration from my 1st haircut came back to me. I regretted so much that I came to him again. I believe he is very good in cutting men's hairs, but for women, it seems he only knows one style and he will cut everyone the same style regardless of age. After I washed my hair in the evening, even the mushroom shape is gone, the hairs are below my ears without any style. I look like an old woman barely having any hairs on my head. I hate my hairs each time I look into the mirror. Now I have to go to the new workplace with this straight down hair without any style for a few months before I have a chance to redo. If you're a woman, and wants to have a haircut with some styles other than mushroom, you really do not want to come to this place. Find some places that's more expensive but have more skilled stylists. read more

Came in as a walk-in for a wash, trim, & flat iron. The "salon" is more like someone's home with 1990's fashion prints on the wall. I was accepted immediately so 2 stars for that, but everything else was kinda gross. There was hair EVERYWHERE!. I mean not just your normal sweepings, but hair in corners, on top of the electrical outlets, on the chairs, & stations. That place had not had a good detailing in a long time. Also, no sanitation bar at any stations. I did not see any disinfectant solution anywhere and combs were not being placed in soil bins just back in the container with all the other combs. There were 3 employees working and the male employee trimmed my hair then asked me to blow dry MY OWN hair before it was to be flat ironed by another employee. I get multi-tasking in a "salon", but never ask the customer to do the job you are paying them to do. I was taken a back and took the hair dryer he handed to me and started blow drying my own hair while he left to cut another customer's hair. While I was blow drying my hair all the hair he had thinned at my ends was still stuck in my hair and got all over my hands...now I was covered in cut wet hair. At that point I just put the blow dryer down and waited. When the other female employee came over she seemed a little bit frazzled & asked me to move to another chair (3rd chair I had moved to btw). Then started blow drying my hair and asked me to help. I asked her, "You want me to blow dry my own hair?" and she said it would be faster if I helped. So I helped begrudgingly. She straightened my hair and did a decent job. It looks nice, but I do not recommend this place if you are used to a higher level of sanitation and service. The wash, trim, & flat iron cost me $37 + $5 tip. I will not be going back. read more
