Im taking it to another shop to reinstall the whole thing correctly, out of pocket.... they lied to me about just about everything which really makes me mad... If I could give ZERO I would!! I've brought TWO vehicles to Custom Sounds, and both times were a disaster. This last visit was the final straw. I dropped my car off on Sunday for a simple radio and backup camera install, and days later, it's still not done. That's not just inconvenient--it's unacceptable. They even broke my AC vent, and no one took accountability. No fix offered. No apology. Just excuses and delays. What's worse? I personally witnessed techs lounging around, laughing, playing on phones, while one poor guy did all the work. Others were nowhere to be found for long periods. If this is how they run their shop, it's no wonder nothing gets done. They've made me drop off, pick up, and return vehicles multiple times, wasting gas, time, and patience. I'm not a car expert, but I know it doesn't take 3+ days to install a basic radio and a camera. This is pure carelessness. At this point, I want my money back. Took it back and they redid the tint but it looked like they didn't touch the back and there were still bubbles on the four windows after another month. So there is good a then there is great a that is what comes with Dustin at customer sounds. I went to the research blvd location an met Dustin. From the jump he was very forward an honest about what I was asking and what my car could handle without sounding like I was trying to compensate for something else. He never once pushed on me to buy but educated an informed me the best route to go. When all said a done he hit me with two options both I liked but the price on one was definitely more my range. So I gave the run down an asked if there was a way to make the two work in the middle. This man didn't hesitate to step back and do all he could to meet me at my budget. Nonetheless, still not quite there . Dustin got on a call with me a the head honcho an after they spoke Russian translation shop talk. Mike the owner stepped in to help see me through to the finish line an the first person in a long time to appreciate the sacrifice of military personnel an really gave me the best deal I could ask for. If only it ended there...Dustin proceeded to take a gander at my husbands truck that had previously been worked on at another location an was never quite right. Again Dustin turned his hands into magic and did his thing an sent us well on our way more than happy. This is for both the Fiesta and Burnet location but Burnet is the one who originally screwed me over, Fiesta just continued the incompetence. Bought a used car in Dec and over the course of a few months all of the speakers sounded like they were going out so I took it to Custom Sounds. I tried to call the location closer to me (Fiesta) but no one ever picks up so I drove out to Burnet. The rep said all four were blown, so I replaced them and went on a trip a few days later. Found that neither of the passenger side right door locks had been re-attached so one one could get out of the car, which was not just annoying but also extremely dangerous if anything were to happen where no one could get out. In addition, the speakers would disconnect randomly and fade in and out and the right speaker has a rattle that makes listening to music louder than a few volume bars useless, I'd rather drive in silence. Took it into the Fiesta location to fix the locks since they're closer but they couldn't get me in for another week. The manager at Burnet had called them to ask who had taken care of me so poorly that I didn't want to get it fixed there but he never bothered to call me to make it right. The Fiesta location was also told about the issues with the speaker and the rattle and just asked if I'd paid for the road noise dampeners when there's obviously an issue with installation only on that speaker. When I got my car back from them they had only done the driver's side and not the back passenger even though I'd definitely noted both multiple times. Geo said they should have checked all the doors. Had to wait another week for it all to get fixed. Spent dozens on ubers back and forth to my house dropping off and picking up this stupid car. In all between getting this fixed and having to go in person to schedule since no one picks up the phone I've had to go 5-6 times just for one GD speaker installation. When I got the car back from the Fiesta location he also asked if I wanted to have the back speakers replaced. No, you guys had LITERALLY JUST DONE THAT. He said oops, they were super quiet so he couldn't tell. I ended up having to adjust the fade to the middle just to make the car sound even all around, as much as I want to get this and the rattle fixed I just don't have time to keep going here and not having anything done correctly. What a ridiculous and incompetent place all around. If anyone knows any legit audio places in town other than Best Buy when these speakers eventually die in a year DM me. read more

I should have headed the other reviews on here. I went in with a "no expense spared" budget and told them I wanted it to sound as good as possible without interrupting the usability of a brand new truck. Spent about 7k for the stereo and it sounds awful. Brought it back and got a load of BS and was asked to bring it back another day. at this point I don't trust them so got some other opinions. Looks like I bought the right stuff which is good. they just didn't bother to spend the time, or have the knowledge, to properly tune the very nice stuff they put in there which kinda defeats the purpose of buying nice stuff. For those of you who have read my previous review, I have made some errors. There were words fired on both sides, everyone had their hand in this. But as of today 10/9/2013, I spoke to the real CEO of the company, Mike. He had me bring the sub in to the shop and put JL's grill on the woofer. It did in fact clear by about .5", and that's the grill. In the end, the damage done to the subwoofer was mine and mine alone. I'd like to formally apologize to Custom Sounds for the mishaps and the negative attention that they have received from this. All I wanted to do was make sure that it wasn't a box error, and it wasn't. I'd like to thank Mike, because he's a real customer service oriented person. Even though the damage was indeed caused by me, he went ahead and pulled a few strings, got the sub refurb'd at no extra charge, and is including a grill so that problems like this won't happen in the future. I'd also like to shout out to Fadi at Custom Sounds off of Research BLVD. He's also a real customer oriented fellow and also helped me around while I was looking for a new 3 way set for my vehicle. Everyone at the Research BLVD store was extremely helpful and good to converse with. I'm not being paid or swindled to say these things, I'm not changing my review just because they decided to take care of me. I'm changing this review because the president apologized and got on my level. He knows things are tough during these economic times, and I wouldn't have minded if nothing was comped. All I wanted was reassurance that it was my fault, not theirs.. or vice versa. I got that today, and I want to let you guys know that there are some motivated folks in the Custom Sounds stores that are oriented with their customers. The last time I installed a new CD player in a car, I did it with some help from a family friend Dave who worked in the industry out in El Paso. This install was way more complicated with my GM car needing adapters for even the blinker and key in the ignition chimes to work correctly. Today, I left it up to the professionals at Custom Sounds. Forever ago, Brian Dorsey was my sales guy back in the 90's with him at the helm of various locations around town. Same top notch service today thru Kyle with me wondering if Brian has as much or more gray hair than I do. Did I get a deal by mentioning the now owners name? I'm really not sure; but in regards to me getting choices on the installation hardware and picking my own location for the bluetooth microphone CS did quite well. I picked what I thought was best for my needs. Bluetooth for hands free talk while driving, rear USB to keep the Ipod in the glove box instead of a cord draping the dash, rounding out the deck price at $189. I could have spent way more on a navigation double din touch screen; but I was realistic. Factor in the required conversion box for GM installation, another adapter to make the steering wheel controls work and I was just over $600. First speed bump was they didn't have or made a mistake in ordering my wiring harness. My two hour estimate now left me time to visit Shu Shu's and Modia just down the road. The boy and I entertained ourselves by sitting on the floor and watching Ironman on the video screens in the middle demo room, Chinese inspired lunch, and the cushy home theater chairs at Modia paired with an 80 inch Sharp Aquos Quattron just a few blocks away proved better accommodations than the floor and a few chairs at CS. More praise to Kyle and staff thanks to us comparing cell phones realizing that Little Rooster left is Iphone at knee level just under the main counter top. Finally, it was done. I should have insisted on more time in the car demonstrating the deck; as the simple treble and bass required more adjustments via a GUI than I was used to. Thirty minutes last night trying to adjust the sound to my taste. I'm settling on 4 stars thanks to me not having to replace Rooster's phone, and the quality of the installation. A fifth star would have involved a comfy waiting area with 2 month old Road and Track magazines. Stay tuned, my adventures in audio aren't over just yet. Next trip will be replacing the factory subwoofer with something that has a little more punch. read more

***BUYER BEWARE*** I had been shopping around for about 2 weeks and decided to finally tint my windows. I was quoted $99.00 online from custom sounds and tint at the 8241 Burnet Rd location. When I arrive for my appointment at 10am there was a line and the guy working the front was down talking his techs saying they called in and he is all about punctuality. We discuss my price he immediately tells me he doe not mess around with the cheap tint I was quoted and I need to switch to metal or ceramic tint. I decided to go with metal. I left the car there and receive a call around 4pm saying the car was donr, however they did not tint the back windshield because he doesn't have tint that length and did not want to cut it and overlap. He said he would deduct it from the price. I pick up my car and it looks like snot has been blown on either side of the car. Side windows tinted rear appeared untouched. Upon inspection I see bubbles on the tint. He assured me thats normal and should go away within 2 weeks. Bubbles are still there and have gotten worse over a period of 3 weeks. Scratches all over passenger rear quarter panel and some nasty greenish yellow fluid all over both doors. Charged me over $190 for coupe back windshield you guessed it untouched. No there was no previous tint on vehicle. who in the hell only tints side windows!? It was a scam to get me I'm the door and the less than professional installers don't give a shit about your vehicle. Take at your own risk read more

Do Not Go Here--I Repeat Do Not Buy or Have Them install any thing! On 5/17/11 I came in to the store at 9:30 am w/ a 10 am appt that was set by Aaron L. the manager. I explained to him the week previous what I wanted for my classic car--1966 Chevrolet Impala: 2 6X9 middlle of the road speakers installed- a hole would have to be cut in the back dash and I wanted the best tech he had to work on it. I was given a quote of $200.00 Once I got there on Tuesday--they had no speakers that met that quote and I was quoted $379 to do the job--almost double! Ok lets do it, I have waited a long time to have a nice sounding system (Focal 690CA1) and the speakers sounded awesome! It took a little over fours hours and I was waiting for the car so it seemed longer, but that's not really the prob. When it was done the first thing I did was look the install over and found that the chrome trim around my back window at the bottom and sides were now tweaked and pulled away. I pointed this out to the install supervisor and he stated that we didn't touch that area and did the install without taking the rear dash a part, which was discussed prior to the install as needeing to be done. Well guess what -- they did take it apart (I know every inch of this car)but denied it (i'm being nice) and refused to do anything about it. The manager Aaron called the shop as he was off. Heard he was on the phone and asked to speak with him, but he would not talk to me---he said come back the next day. I took off the whole day to have this done and I live 30 miles away from this shop. Misquoting and overcharging is one thing--but lying to the customer is another. A complete thumbs up! I don't know why people have been rating them so low. I own a Ford Mustang 2005 and wanted to get my stereo replaced with touchscreen, bluetooth, Aux and USB. The Shaker 500 system in 2005 Mustang comes with just basic radio. Following yelp reviews I figured Pro Car Audio was rated way better than Custom Sounds so I decided to go to them first. The sales representatives were not at all professional plus price that was told to me was exorbitant. Dissatisfied by the sales service I walked out. One of the friends suggested to try out Custom sounds anyway. So Burnet road's manager is James I guess. I forgot the name. I walked in and I was greeted very nicely and while I was waiting I observed they greet each and every person walking in to the shop. James showed me different options that I have, I ended up buying the Alpine ILX 007 and for Thanks giving I got $200 off on the market price. I showed up the day I was told for installation and within couple of hours my stereo was ready. I got a 2 year warranty for additional $75 and if anything goes wrong with my stereo they ll replace it free of cost , send it to Alpine and take care of everything until then. I was really happy with the entire installation and my car stereo looks like it came built in with the Car. Here one catch was James was trying to sell me a $120 warranty which lasted for 3 years but in the third year I would have to pay for uninstalling the car stereo etc. It was only when I showed disinterest in buying the warranty he told me about the 2 year option. Another complain I can have was service charge, brackets needed for installation etc, were costlier than I expected but I was told the final price before purchase and I can't really rate them less for a higher price. Overall a great store in terms of skillsets, knowledge and customer service. Just think about reducing your service charge etc a bit and you'll have more and more satisfied customers walking out. EDIT: After adding the image of customized home screen for apple car play by alpine ILX 007, I'm getting more and more requests on how I got that done. So instead of replying everyone individually I figured I'll just post the procedure here: You need following things for this. a. A pen drive, Size 1GB or less. b. The image that you want as the background with following specifications. 1. Resolution 800x480 (Can use MS paint on windows for this) 2. Format - 24 bit bmp (Bitmap image) 3. Name - openingfile.bmp Steps: 1. Format the pendrive on windows with file format NTFS or FAT32. 2. Make a folder inside the pen drive called OPENINGFILE. 3. Copy openingfile.bmp to this folder. 4. Connect your pen drive to the USB port on ILX-007 5. If everything goes well, your device should be recognized and you ll have a prompt on screen asking whether you want to change to custom background. Boom you are done. Each and every step here is as important as other. So pay attention to detail. If something goes wrong you ll get a message "USB device not recognized." Ping me back then. read more

Let me start off by saying that everyone has different standards. I myself have high standards and expect a certain level of customer service to go along with the quality of work when I pay someone to do something. I think it is very clear that this is not a business that you will be impressed with their quality of work by looking at their 3 star ranking. When I walked into the store there was an older lady, maybe in her 40's who was complaining about how she has been in there 3 or 4 times over the same issue from an install they had done. She explained for the amount of money she paid this should not be what she has to go through. Right then and there I should have walked out but I didn't. I understand mistakes are made but if you have to come back multiple times then the issue is the shop. So once I made my way to the counter and discussed everything I needed the quote was literally double the price I was quoted everywhere else. Second time I should have walked away but I didn't. I negotiated to what I thought was a inflated price but I was willing to pay it considering I needed the work done asap. They probably smelled my desperation and took full advantage of me. What was supposed to be a same day job ended up taking two days and if it was not for me reaching out to them I would have never known my car wasn't going to be ready at close of business like they had promised. That shows a lack of professionalism and the ability to run a business properly. When I showed up the next day to pick up my vehicle it still wasn't ready. I sat around for an hour or two before the vehicle was pulled out front and you can tell it was a rushed job. The carpet was not put back properly, some of the rivets were missing, the speaker guards were lose, the plastic was lifted in some area's and I could see exposed wiring. I mentioned it to them and they fixed it but that is another example of the kind of service you can expect from a shop who will not get it right the first time. I have had over 10 vehicles and all tinted. Not once has the tint shop not been able to match the tint to the privacy glass on the other windows but this shop was not able to. Not once have I gone to pick up my vehicle and had large bubbles in the tint that they said would go away once the tint dried, they never did. I should have known better than to pay them and drive off but I had no other choice since I was leaving the state the very next morning. There are plenty of other shops that you can go to. Stay away from this shop. Please! I'd say if you were short on cash and they were offering unbeatable deals then you can roll the dice and take your chances but for the amount of money they are charging you can take your car somewhere else for better service at a better price. read more

I will start by saying I've never written a review for any product or service before. So you know it must have been a really good or really bad experience. I think the one star gives it away. I even waited 24 hours before writing this review just in case I had a change of heart. Nope. I had Custom Sounds on Research Blvd. install a Kenwood head unit and remote, which I purchased elsewhere, in my boat. What a miserable experience. I thought I would be excited, but I'm just bewildered and annoyed. The first thing I noticed when arriving was a general lack of friendliness. It was as if I was inconveniencing them...no indication they were happy to be there nor happy that I was there. I arrived 5 minutes before they opened. Guys we're running around moving cars, opening overhead doors, etc...generally getting ready for the day. Not once did anyone acknowledge my existence while I waited in the parking lot. No "hey thanks for coming in, we'll be right with you."...Nothing. They asked me to back the boat into the bay. No problem, but it would have been nice for someone to watch and help guide me so I didn't hit anything (which I didn't). Then when picking it up the first thing I noticed were dirty shoe prints on my BRAND NEW upholstery and fiberglass dust everywhere from drilling the hole for the remote. Really?! Would it have been ok for them to walk on the seats of my Denali with their shoes on? Or leave a messy mess? Then why is it ok in a boat? My guess is I would have had the same experience with the Denali. Now to the actual installation. The bracket for the back of the remote which holds it in place was not installed. Tim explained that they have some super strong double sided tape for this purpose. Fine, but he also tried to convince me that remote didn't come with a bracket, which is 100% false...I even held the bracket in my hand. I would have preferred the bracket be installed. In addition, the carpet on the inside of the wall where the remote was installed was peeled back to provide access and was then not put back in place. It is just hanging there. Again, can you imagine this being done in a high-end vehicle? I had previously removed the old head unit myself. Under the lid of the glove box is a tray for storage and that is where the head unit mounts. I took 3 screws out to remove the tray and also took the metal strap loose from the back of the old head unit which helps support it. I'd specifically asked that the 3 screws in the tray be reinstalled and just assumed the strap would be connected to the new unit. Neither of these things happened. For crying out loud, this is a boat, subject to jarring in rough water. That extra support strap is there for a reason! I didn't say anything when I picked it up because frankly I didn't want to be an ass and it just wasn't worth it. However, I didn't notice the missing remote bracket, loose carpet, or the unconnected support strap until I got it home. That's when I went apoplectic! I called Tim and ranted for a bit and emailed Austen, the store manager at the Burnet Rd store with whom I'd had initial contact. Took my 2015 Highlander in about a month after I purchased it early last year for a nearly $6,000 system. All was well for a few weeks, then the problems started. Since then, it has been in the shop 12 or so times. Each time the discussion either goes... "we can't reproduce it" or "it's not our fault". Each time, there's something else wrong. So far our processor, 2 amps, and a speaker have been replaced under warranty. We lost our SafetyConnect from the start and IT STILL DOESN'T WORK. We lost Bluetooth calling at one point, they blamed Toyota, then ended up finding out it was in fact, supposedly, a faulty RCA cable. Faulty installation under the hood was "fixed" yesterday, and now my car starts itself, won't turn off, and has no functioning displays inside. The response? "We're confident we didn't cause that and Toyota will have to diagnose and fix it". Most of the employees are condescending at best and take it quite badly if you speak as if you know anything about electrical components. Dismissive, hostile, and unprofessional nearly across the board. The regional manager, Brandon, is the one exception, and it's only because of his patience and professionalism that this isn't in court already. read more

This place is great when you are spending money and buying speakers. The lifetime warranty is a joke. First, we made appointment and went to drop it off and we're turned away because there are no appointments just "first come first serve". We have gone to this store three different times, and left with broken speakers each time. Not to mention these speakers are a little over a year old and have broken twice. After being deleted out of the system and having to call corporate to get an order number, which still wasn't in the system. You're fucked if you don't get the warranty because they WILL break and you're fucked if you do get it because you will never get an "appointment". read more

First things first: Custom Sounds is not, by any stretch, cheap. ESPECIALLY for their installation. I had them install a new head unit, 2 subs, an amp, 2 in-door mids (with Dynamat) and 2 on-door tweets. For the head unit they had to run a microphone up to my rearview mirror for hands-free, and a USB cord to my glove box for iPod. This all added up to about $2,400. About $1,000 of that was installation. I also paid extra for the 3-year service plan. Cut to almost 2 years later and my head unit starts acting up. I took my truck back to them this morning, but did not bring my receipt. No problem. One of the employees (Drew) followed me out to the truck, I showed him what's wrong and he said "No problem, we'll get you fixed right up." They are swapping out the head unit today, while I'm at work, and Drew even gave me a (short) ride to work. They offered to swap it out for an identical unit for free, but I wanted to upgrade to the newer version. They let me pay the $100 difference between what I originally paid for my head unit and the current sale price on the newer, upgraded model. Again, no problem. Where these guys really shine is in their responsibility to the customer. Granted, the whole system has to be purchased from them and installed by them, but if you play by their rules then they treat you right. I expected car stereo guys to be shiesty and was both surprised and pleased when they were very agreeable and helpful. I still have a year left on my original warranty, but I think I'm going to purchase another extended warranty for the new head unit they are installing today. That way I know that if it goes out within three years they will have me up and running same-day and treat me with the same great customer service I received today. Oh, and I must say that the install job they did (2 years ago) looks top-notch. They had to tear several parts of my truck apart to hide wires, but everything is securely and beautifully mounted. They also solder their connections, which is a big bonus. TL;DR: These guys are expensive but if you have them do all of the work and you purchase the extended warranty then you are golden if any problems pop up. I, for one, would rather have GOOD work done to my vehicle than CHEAP work. So I am fine with paying more for that. read more

One of the nicest companies I have ever dealt with. I did not have my car audio installed at Custom Sounds in Austin Tx, however I bought the equipment at Custom Sounds at very good price and will have it installed locally in Tampa Fl. at an installation center that they recommended. Kat & Matt answered my questions expeditiously & I am sorry that I am not in Austin to have it installed by Custom. If their installation is as good as their customer service then it is a great place to do business with. read more

I am a previous Custom Sounds customer so I am biased towards their work. When I bought my first car in 1991 I had them install a CD Changer and have used them ever since. I scheduled an appointment yesterday to get a car stereo with blue tooth installed in the primary family car. So far everything is working great--the hands free is clear and the stereo components (CD/DVD, iPod/iPhone/SiriusXM) are top notch. I was in and out on time. Normally I would rate this a 5. However, initial inspection with one of the sales guys after the install was complete revealed that they had used the wrong kit to install the deck. The gap around the deck was glaring yet the sales guy acted as if that was normal. Knowing better I told him I was not leaving until it was fixed. He said he would talk to his installer and see if there was anything he could do. Fortunately the manager intervened. He looked at it, agreed with me, and had the installer put the correct bracket on--eliminating the gaps. I appreciate what he did because the other sales guy was willing to let it go. I rate this experience 2 stars because: 1: The installer should not have said the job was done when the quality of the install was obviously lacking. When you go to a place like this, you expect quality work and what I got initially definitely was not that. 2: The salesman could have made it right immediately instead of trying to "see" if there was something that they could do. If he cannot recognize that that the install was not indicative of the work that Custom Sounds is known for then he needs to get into a different line of work. 3: Manager intervention is the only thing that saved this review. I appreciate what he did and the immediate action he took. read more

I have to say I'm not happy, after a terrible experience at the south Congress store I was sent to the burnet store. I live south and this is not an easy drive.... so after multiple times taking my car alarm to the other location I was assured by Dustin this would be fixed. It lasted about 10 days and my alarm was erroring again.... took it back and again I was assured by Dustin this would be fixed and again 10 days later same thing!! How hard is it to install an alarm and or fix this issue! Is it because I'm not installing a 10k audio system or I don't have a lambo.... by the way that took the whole stores attention and all I heard was how quick they would get him in and out.... customer service based on the amount of cash you have or car you drive.... wow! At this point I'm not sure what to do.... you have lost more than just one customer. I will not recommend you all to my truck club and or any friends or Family. I guess I have to find another audio alarm place to fix this! Waste of my time, Gas and money!!! Ugh!!!! read more

Custom sounds is definitely not even worth one star. They have unlicensed techs, Anna that answers the phone is rude and acts like your a bother. Management is not into keeping customers apparently. The whole place is ran badly and it's a waste of money. Paid for a dash cam last year in June and still never has it worked properly and still no resolution. My advice. I worked with Randy, the manager, to have a new XM Satellite receiver put in that I had purchased from Amazon. He and Cody, the service manager, put it exactly where I wanted it and how I asked for it to be installed. A month later I returned because they installed it with the provided two piece mounting bracket which wasn't very solid. They installed a new single piece bracket at no charge.
