I live in an apartment building with a preferred vendor list. When my unit's HVAC started having problems, I went down the list--the first vendor worked on the HVAC, but the problem persisted. That's when I called Custom Air Systems for the first time, and I will only call Custom Air Systems from now on. I am one of those unlucky or lucky or, however you want to view it people that seem to get bizarre technical issues with things like HVAC units. The problem wasn't an easy fix in that a lot of troubleshooting went into actually diagnosing the problem. This company is terrible. Not sure where I even start. They have made many visits to a home I'm renting- I can't recall how many but they've been out at least 5 times for issues with either AC blowing hot air thru vents or sometimes there were vents that didn't blow any air. There is a lady named Denise who is the person who always answers when you call ( I'm assuming owner). She will ask what the issue is then remind you that the AC won't get to 60s. I remind her that is not what the issue is, but I think it's reasonable to assume it should get to below 80 degrees. Each time a technician comes (it's a new person every time except once) they have given a new diagnosis for the same problem. A few months ago, the technician told me the vent wasn't blowing air because of faulty duct work (the tape came off). He said he couldn't fix at that time because he couldn't fit it that part of the attic. So they had to send another technician a couple days later. He fixed the issue. 3 months later (2 days ago) same issue occurred with the same vents- no air was blowing out the vents. He also said the duct needed to be taped- I told them they just did that a few months ago and questioned why it would happen again. He said he didn't know. So the same work was performed twice and I'm guessing the owner was charged twice. Another time they told me there was no Freon in the system and there was a leak. A temporary fix was done (they filled the Freon) and they told me that the owner didn't want to fix the leak (which I found out later was a lie). The most recent time they came out (2 days ago) for the system blowing hot air and some vents not blowing air at all, the technician told me it was again a ducting problem where he had to tape it again. A couple months ago I purchased portable units to get thru the hot summers since this company is so unreliable and I didn't want to keep complaining to the owners about the AC issues. But this past week we have been having an extreme heat wave and at night the portable units I have just can't cool down to a comfortable temp, as they aren't made for large homes. So during the day it gets to 78 but by night it's 87. So when the technician came (2 hours late) he took a picture of the thermostat that showed 78 to send to Denise. Even though this was not with the central AC on, it was with the portable unit which he was aware as was Denise. I told him I would shut off portable unit and put on central AC so he could see how much the temp would rise. When we did this, as I stated the temp rose to 82 degrees by the time he left, and continued to rise. So the issue still isn't fixed (home gets to 89 degrees downstairs when it is only running central AC without the portable units). I will not be complaining again about this issue to the owners as they have been great with attempting to fix the issue using this company and I don't want to cause anymore frustration. It's not the end of the world to have to sleep downstairs for a few nights to avoid the unbearable heat upstairs at night. If there is another big heat wave in which my portable units don't suffice I will be paying another company myself to have them diagnose the issue to save the owners from wasting more money on this issue. I don't know if the company is taking advantage since they are dealing with a renter and tenant and telling us both different things or if their technicians are just incompetent be it seems to be the former - Denise taking advantage of the situation. I will say that all the technicians have been friendly though and I feel the actual technicians haven't had bad intentions. I would avoid this company at all costs. I am always hesitant to leave bad reviews and rarely do as I am a business owner myself. But this company has been given several chances. And since I recently found out that different things have been said to me and the owners by Denise that was the final straw. read more

We have a day care at our home and can not be without A/C. The service man Matt was there on time,found the issue and fixed it. I will use them again and again. Just want to say that I have nothing but good things to say about the folks at Custom Air. Martin and his crew installed a brand new central AC/Heating system in June 2012 and yesterday it wouldn't turn on. I called and they scheduled service for today. Alex was the tech who came by to service the motor/compressor in the attic. He was friendly, knowledgable and efficient. He made an adjustment to the blower in the attic and the unit powered up. I was afraid it would run about $1000 just from the worst case scenarios I spoke to people about, but when he told me the cost, my wallet was happy as was I! It was only the minimum $110 service call rate. I have referred Martin and Custom Air to many folks over the last three years and will continue to do so in the future. Don't hesitate to call on them when your AC calls it quits. They will definitely take care of you with great service at a very fair price. Also, Matt in the service department, was very patient with all of my questions and "what ifs" with regard to cost and service. I'm happy he sent Alex my way and will call on them if I ever need them again. Hopefully it won't be for a long time! ;) read more

If I could put 6 stars, I would. I called Custom Air Systems as our 20+ year old heater had been acting up badly. The owner, Martin, responded to my call swiftly and scheduled an appointment early the following morning. He very quickly determined my heater's control board was faulty and it had to be ordered. Shortly after leaving, I received a call from Matt who scheduled a follow up appointment the next day. His tech, Rigo, very polite and professional was able to install the control board and - problem solved. Rigo also did a Preventive Maintenance on the unit, cleaned it, oiled the bearings, washed my filter (its a washable filter, yes). I HIGHLY recommend this company. No drama, no BS, just very honest and professional service. read more

What was asked for ? During a remodel this company was suggested by my General Contractor. We asked them to find a way to quiet down our roof-mounted air-co unit since it was a tad too boomy and produced a low loud hum in the room. Martin, the owner said -verbally- they would be able to do this for $5000 and get it "really quiet". Seemed pretty pricey for this, but I agreed to the amount since we were in a bit of a rush, and I didn't want to have to worry further. The work would include moving the unit to a different portion of the roof, adding sound traps and new insulated pipes. This conversation happened before June 2014. He was going to get hired through my General Contractor. He promised they'd get on it within a week. What happened? After some calls they finally started the project 2+ weeks after initial verbal bid. Never was their a formal bid send out. By this time our General Contractor was pretty much done already on the interior of the remodel, so a next wave of dust and noise would start. The initial part of work was completed within 2 weeks, but the results were far from "pretty quiet". In fact, it was almost identical to before. We let Custom Air know their solution had little impact. I have to say that Martin was responsive to this and said he was going to find a way. At this point I suggested several methods to fix it (since my background is audio engineering) and he let me to believe he explored those options. On August 15 they send me a bill for $6,800 dollars. With the work not completed I wasn't going pay them. This was also $1800 above the verbally quoted amount. They came back repeated times to try to "Fix" the problem. Note that they never did the "proper" fix, only mainly quick hacks. None of their solutions had much impact, except for the last one which lowered the noise-floor in the room by 4db (the verbal request had been 10-20db of reduction). I let them know this was still far from what we had talked about, and I suggested that we look at a new AC/Heater unit, for which I'd pay for. No response to this. The current noise-floor in the room is 39-40dB. It started at 44db. On Feb2, he came in un-announced, threatened to sue us, even questioned why I wanted to have it quiet including verbal insults etc. I gave him the $5000 of the original quote and asked him to leave. I'll bring in a new company to properly fix it. By all means stay away from this company. It's a "hack job" company at best with an owner who's unprofessional. Maybe that's why there's no reviews on Angie's list. I'd have never hired this company had it not been for our G.C recommending them. Please note that our G.C also no longer uses them. read more

I can't recommend Custom Air Systems enough. Recently we reconnected with Custom Air Systems for in home service. We are of the age that makes it difficult to climb into the attic to replace filters. Custom Air Systems sent out Brandon, who was efficient, friendly and knowledgeable. He answered tested the units, changed the filter, etc.and answered all of our questions. We have renewed a long history with this company. About 15 years ago the gas company mandated that we had to replace our heater located in the attic even though it was only 10 years old. It had been identified as the cause of house fires starting in the attic! Our long term professional plumber (whom we also trust completely) recommended Martin Fray at Custom Aire Systems. After getting several bids we selected Custom Aire Systems. Martin replaced our forced air heating unit in the attic with one that was more energy efficient at reasonable cost including having the asbestos ducting professionally removed. As we have learned with all of his work, the project was done quickly and efficiently without leaving a mess. He also drew out plans needed to add central air at a later time when we could afford to add it. Well it took a few years before we were able to add the central air but thanks to his preplanning it was a snap and the unit he recommended for our size home was the perfect investment. We have had the air conditioning unit for 6 years and the heater for almost 15 years along with a digital thermostat that Martin installed with the heater. We live where summer temps regularly exceed 100 degrees and our house stays cool in summer, warm in winter. Our gas and electrical costs remain low and reasonable especially when compared to our neighbors! We highly recommend this company! They know their business! read more
