A subtle hint had been dropped before that a couple's event, like painting and wine tasting, was of interest. There was a shop offering that experience, along with one that appeared to pair photography with alcohol?!? After further investigation however, I found 'the one's, Wigenton Candle Co. The experience they offered was much more intimate; creating a candle together. Said candle, would of course be used in the future, and each time memories of its creation would come flooding back. I ducked into the shop for an overview and spoke to the owner, Stephanie. After confirming that it was ideal, I made a reservation for a bit later that evening. Come 7:00, my SO and I arrived for our candle-making session. Being Halloween, most people were interested in far different activities, thus we were the only partipants. Stephanie explained the process to us, then had us sit at a crafting station, which had the ingredients we'd need laid out already. Stephanie provided a thorough explanation of each potential fragrance, including its benefits, and popular fragrance combinations. After testing different fragrances, and combinations, we now had all the ingredients necessary to make 'OUR' candle. Stephanie led us through the process of assembling the candle, and explained that it would need to cook for a number of hours before it could be moved. She also recommended that it not be burned for at least 3 days. As we wrapped up, Stephanie shared candle burning tips including making them last, their optimum placement within a room, etc. I asked what the inspiration was for the store. Come to find out Stephanie suffered the ill-effects that many so when burning commercially manufactured candles. They often include harmful ingredients which can negatively effect one's health (short and long-term), and exacerbate asthmatic symptoms. Needless to say, the candles you make in the store, as well as the pre-made candles and other items, such as diffuser oils, contain none of the 'bad stuff'. As we made our way out the door we learned that it's possible to bring one's own food and drink to a couple's session, adding another layer of intimacy. The reaction to the experience from both me and my SO was outstanding. It blew away all the other couple experience options available at the National Harbor, and left us both looking forward to the day (more likely night) that we would first light 'OUR' candle. These are the scents you'll be choosing from in the class. The candles are made upstairs. You'll see a sign directing you up there, OR somebody will come down and ask you to wait until some people leave. They book back to back, so people are always coming and going. The two employees stayed busy the whole time we were there. I gotta give them props! It's BYOB so make sure you bring something to sip on while you're making candles. They do provide glasses or you can bring your own. Once upstairs you'll choose your vessel (which style of candle do you want to make). Then you'll choose your scent. They had fall scents when we went. You can mix two scents, but they explain the pros and cons of that. AND you can choose your ratio. Then, you can choose a color if you'd like. I won't go into everything because they'll walk you through it. It's pretty straight up. It was a fun experience. You can even title your candle. They'll provide a label and colored pencils. You can place the label on the side or top. Pretty cool. Lastly, you'll have to come back a minimum of 24-hours later. It needs to set. I've had mine home and got around to burning it. I was hoping the scent would be stronger (or that I could at least smell it). Perhaps my mix settled or something. I'll update this review if I find the scent stronger as I burn it. That's the main thing I search for in a candle; one that burns as strong as it smells. Still, it was something different to do.

Unfortunately, the manager's response was, "They'll be okay, they need to wait." What made the situation even more frustrating was that the manager then remained off to the side, laughing and carrying on with a group of employees rather than assisting with the long lines or helping the cashier manage the situation. I found the overall response to be dismissive, unhelpful, and unprofessional, particularly coming from a manager who should be setting the standard for customer service. I have rarely encountered that level of indifference from a manager, and the experience left a very negative impression of the store. I hope this feedback is taken seriously and that appropriate steps are taken to ensure customers are treated with greater courtesy and professionalism in the future.
