Four years ago, I had a o-k experience at Paddywax, so we decided to revisit it for a date night, especially with their Black Friday/Cyber Monday promotion offering $10 off the regular $45 per person candle-making experience. Unfortunately, this visit was disappointing in many ways. First, it was freezing outside, and as someone recovering from an injury, it took a lot of effort for me to get to the store. Upon arrival, we discovered their bathroom was out of service, being used for storage because they won't fix the hinges--an inconvenience for all guests. The biggest letdown was the lack of instruction. What used to feel like a guided experience, is now completely self-paced with step-by-step cards. The "instructor" was absent for most of the session, and was missing in action for any questions. This left attendees relying on each other for guidance if they were further along in the process.they also don't allow you to mix any scents now, so personalization is useless. Overall, the experience felt disorganized and lacked the personal touch that made it special. The value just isn't there anymore--it's simply not worth the $45 (or even $35 with the discount) for the wax we poured. You're better off saving your money and purchasing a quality candle elsewhere or a dyi kit off Amazon. read more

Upon entry, we were warmly greeted. After all the party groups came for our time session, we were given directions to pick our candle container. Disclaimer, the container options for the candles are vast and can be used for multiple purposes, which is pretty cool. Then, we picked our fragrances, which there appears to be an option for everyone. Needless to say, it was hard to make a decision. Afterwards (which didn't quite go as expected), we were directed to a notebook that guided us through the process. For this portion of the experience, we were actually expecting that the candle making session be a guided experience, rather than a "read and do". However, even though that was the case, we still had a really great time. After we completed our candles, we had to wait for approximately 2 to 3 hours for the wax to dry. Then came back and picked up our beautifully scented candles. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. FYI, the cost for this experience was approximately $47. read more

Leaving a one star because if they're going to reserve this place for a work event at least have the decency for people to pick up their candle still. I drove so far to pick up my candle at 6 o clock before they closed and turns out they closed earlier for some stupid work event. Refused to have me pick up my candle, even when the worker told us the day we made the candle we could pick it up the next day. There are a couple cons..1 we had to keep getting the attendants to bring over items we needed while following the directions. Made a reservation for 5 to make candles for our friends birthday celebration. We weren't sure what to expect, but we are trying to do more experiences for our "birthday club" instead of just gifts and lunch. The birthday girl mentioned Paddywax so I set it up. It was all set up very easily online. When we arrived our station was set up and one of the workers came over to explain what we were going to do. You basically pick your vessel...great variety and all can be repurposed in other ways, several are food safe. Then you pick your fragrance, and measure. Depending on your vessel you will get 1, 2 or 3 wicks. Once you are all set, one of the workers brings you over some hot wax for pouring and measuring. You measure, mix in your fragrance and pour. Once done, you leave it there to cool and they will text when done. The 5 of us had a good time. For the price point we would've loved options like making the candle wax a color! Cute shop with some cute things for purchase ranging from candles (of course), accessories, water bottles, and more. The class was about $43 and booked online. They had us sit at a table, shared with about 6 other people. The station is set up with a scale, beaker, instructions booklet/easel. They had us pick out a scent (if you arrive early, check these out in advance because the line can get long and they have a lot of options). Of note, they said we weren't able to mix and combine scents. You can pick out a vessel (the container/vase) you put the candle in. They have lots of options and some can be used as other things (e.g., planter) when the candle runs out. You also can bring it back for a refill. Overall, it was fun to go through it but it was very much self paced rather than an actual class taught/led by a staff member. It was actually pretty simple. My friend took me here for my birthday, and I had a great experience! I loved the idea of making your own candles. The workshop was well run by the staff members and I liked that it was supervised and assistance was extremely accessible. Aesthetically, Paddywax is very colorful, bright, and modern. Each wall consisted of a station in the workshop as well as candle and merchandise display. There were a variety of scents and fragrances to choose from, and they were also categorized. The process was very simple, from beginning to end. My favorite part of the experience, was that you could pick any kind of container/vessel you wanted for your candle. Their business model revolves around the reusing of the candle vessel, which I thought was very eco-friendly and a great idea! Each vessel you could pick, had a specific use for it after finishing the candle. Some could be used as containers for other things, as food bowls, plant pots, and etc. The finished candle takes about three hours to set, so they gave the option of picking it up at a later date or shipping it to your house for $8. My party arrived a few minutes late to our 11:00am session. We weren't greeted, welcome or instructed where to sit. After we sat ourselves Malia, who I believe is the owner, checked us and others who were already there and had also arrived late. Though, our party completed the waivers prior to our arrival several of us were asked to complete the waivers again as they didn't save to the system. After we got settled in and started to figure out next steps Malia impatience and unfriendliness seemed to grow. However, she still provided us with steps to move forward in the process. We were instructed to pick a vessel, which is included in the $45 price, which was a nice. We were then told from that point on the rest of our hour experience would be self-paced and on our own which, if indicated when signing up wasn't clear. This was a completely self-paced no guidance experience. There were about 20 different vessels to select from, however, sometimes the only difference was color. There were approximately 16 different scents to select from. Once a scent was out apparently that meant there was no more of it, or at least that's what I was told. As we moved through the experience we realized we were missing several tools necessary to complete some of the steps. When we asked Malia she did got them for us but she again appeared annoyed by us asking. There were also several other participants asking for tools and assistance throughout and it would have been nice to have multiple staff to assist instead of just having to rely on one person for questions and concerns. As the session wrapped up the activity Malia thanked the group for coming and arriving on time and then looked over at our group seeming to direct the time comment towards us (there were other participants that also arrived late and after our party). We waited 3 times to retrieve our candles, which was a bit long but we knew in advance was the required waiting time. One thing to add, a member in our party did accidentally knock over one of the vessels which was stacked high on the top shelf. We fortunately weren't asked to pay for it. However, Malia appeared clearly annoyed by the incident instead of being a bit more understanding that accident can happen especially given how the vessels were staked and how close they were to the sitting area. Overall, Malia wasn't very friendly and didn't create a very welcoming atmosphere. Though, it was nice to have the vessel included in the $45 price I wouldn't want to return to somewhere I feel welcomed. read more

Once we were there they had the tables set up with the supplies and instructions. You get to pick out your candle vessel from a wall of options. All of the vessels can be reused once you've burned all your candle. They even had vessels that are food safe. Then you get to pick your scent, they had a good amount of scents to choose from, about 20. They even had color options for coloring your wax. They don't guide you through making the candle, but each setting has the detailed instructions. They also give you measurements based on the vessel you choose. Overall, the experience takes 30-45 minutes depending on how long you look at vessels and scents. I would recommend coming here and then going somewhere to eat in Reston Town Center while you wait for your candle to harden. We went here for a girls date. The place is sooooo cute !!! They literally have so many vases in different colors and shapes. It was so hard to choose one. The people working there were really nice as well. One thing to be aware of is the place is kinda like a self serve candle making. They give you instructions on how to do everything, but it's not like someone walking you through it. One downside I will say was you aren't really able to mix fragrances and there fragrance section is pretty limited compared to other places I've gone. I did however choose a sent and I was scared it wasn't going to give me that strong aroma in the house but to my surprise it smelt sooo good AND strong ( how I like it). The experience wasn't terrible, but it was also a bit boring. After everyone is seated they explain the history of Paddywax, explain every type of candle holder (out of order) from the flip chart in front of your seat, then due to COVID restrictions send one group at a time to the wall to pick your "vessel" and scent. The actual candle making portion involved following instructions from the flip chart in front of you: place the wicks, measure out the specified amount of fragrance, measure out the wax, stir together, then pour. For $40 I was expecting a little... more. The part where you make your candle took maybe 10 minutes out of the entire hour. I like getting to pick the holder and scent combo, but it almost felt like you should get to make two candles for the cost! Also, this may be a little nit-picky but you pay an $8 uncorking fee, yet still have to uncork your own wine. They have one corkscrew which is the cheapest of the cheap and they don't sanitize it between patrons use. It's also very difficult to maneuver and actually open your wine. Essentially their "uncorking fee" is you paying for the privilege to drink wine you already paid for after you open it yourself. I think the price is a little steep for that. Overall, it was a decent experience, but I don't know that I would do it again. Majority of the class (I would say at least 30-40 minutes) was listening to the instructor talk about the company and the vessels. The actual candle making portion was very short. I've been to Paddywax twice now for their candle-making class. I'm giving three stars for my overall experience the second time. I wasn't aware that the class went from instructor-led to self-guided while reading instructions. For the price and distance I would have just paid for the at-home kit as to not waste an hour both ways for a 15 minute experience. At the time, shipping was no longer available so we had to choose a different day and time to retrieve our candles. Upon retrieval we realized mine was missing. I appreciate the staff checking all of the drawers and areas and eventually I was told I could have them make and send me a new one. I didn't want that option as the original container I chose was not available so I retrieved one from the display, but not before some brief pushback of course. I was told a refund was not an option and they'd have to inquire with management. Why would a refund not be an option for an item that was not present? Eventually I received a call that the candle had been found and would be shipped to me. Imagine my disappointment when I opened it to see the lid was missing and I was just sent the plain base without it. Ill likely never visit again but would still recommend it for anyone who is local and wants the experience. Outside of that, save your money and just buy a kit. read more

I went to a candle making place in Philly and had a wonderful time so I decided to try the candle making experience again in the area. I can honestly say I wasn't impressed. You pay in advance (perfectly fine) and the shop is super cute. You have to pay $8 to drink your own wine. My wine was $8 but okay whatever, no big deal. You're not necessarily making candles here, just following instructions. At the candle making place I went to previously, you were allowed to mix your own scents. Here, scents are premixed. You get a sheet, get to smell your scents and mark it on your checklist. There were maybe 24 premade scents in total. My date and I ended up picking the exact same scent because we weren't allowed to really get creative. Next you get to pick your canister. This might have been my favorite part because there were so many cute options. Last step is to pour and wait. The entire experience is about an hour which I also really didn't like. It didn't seem rushed per-say, it just didn't really seem like a full experience. I also did not like how you don't get to take your candle home same day. The website says your candle will be ready in 3 hours. My candle began solidifiying while I was sitting but the instructor was adamat about not letting me take my candle home. At other wax places, you get your candle same day but are instructed not to burn for 24 hours. Here, you can come back the next day and pick it up or pay $8 per candle to get it mailed to you. I have no problem spending money on experiences but the nickle and dime feel of this place is a turn off. My suggestion would be to roll up all of your expenses into one price instead of having to charge for every little thing. And let people take their candles home same day. read more

Reservations are easy to make and they take care to socially distance. There are coupons online (up to 25% off) to cut the cost for a reservation to make your own candle, which is a bit pricey. While the process has a lot of instructions it is very uncomplicated and super simple. A container costs around $18, so I'm not sure why the class costs so much. I wouldn't have done it, and wouldn't recommend, unless you use a coupon. It seems unnecessarily pricy for how simple and fast the class is. Most of the class is hearing about the history and sitting and waiting for more simple instructions. Due to covid, you have to take turns picking out containers and fragrance, so that also takes up a lot of time. I came with a friend after brunch and was happy they have a corking fee and you can BYOB! For $8 they'll let you bring in a bottle and provide plastic glasses... you uncork your own bottle. The instructor gives very clear instructions and walks you through choosing a container, fragrance, measuring and pouring wax. It's super super simple and kids 10+ are able to join and would have a blast. I love that you can bring the containers back for a refill of your favorite fragrance, or you can try a new one, for a discount. I also love that the containers can be repurposed and some have holes for plants! There are many fragrances and containers to choose from. Know that candles take a while to set, but if you book a noon class they'll be done by 5pm. If you're traveling they offer shipping and/or you have a week to pick up. read more

My family and I throughly enjoyed our visit here for Mother's Day. We booked a candle making session for Mother's Day which was reasonably priced and included complimentary rosé to celebrate the occasion. The session was interactive and informative. One thing I'd change is the pace in which the instructions were given -- our guide spoke very quickly which was hard at times for me understand, let alone my immigrant parents! I'd still give this a 5/5 and I'm in love with my candle. We were given an additional 20% off anything in the store which was a plus. Always love getting to "make" candles here, however I've now had the issue multiple times in which we've come to pick up our candles within the next couple days (because they typically need time to dry and do so overnight if you have a later session) and, low and behold, the store is closed several hours before their scheduled closing time. I've even called ahead only to show up 2 hours before closing for them to be closed. It's fun, but it's unnecessarily pricey and they can't seem to stick to a regular schedule to save their lives. I am sitting outside of the store right now, when they are supposed to be open for another hour and 10 minutes (the hours on their door, even on Yelp say they should be open)... they are closed and I can't pick our candles after making the 30 minute trip out here. read more

Though the staff was knowledgeable, high energy, and nice, the experience was less enjoyable because the staff makes it clear there's no room for customization or experimentation. They are there to ensure that you follow every step precisely, even if you were willing to accept whatever consequences come with experimentation. I won't fault them for following the rules, but honestly the class was boring outside of choosing your fragrance and vessel (which was selected for us in my case - but hey - we did get two for one!). In total, we spent about 10 minutes doing anything that felt like we had a choice in. Simply put, going to this class is like looking forward to a Bob Ross painting session and walking in to find a Paint by Numbers book in front of you. But it came with a smile! And a pretty nice smelling candle. Pro-Tip: if you save some of your wax, you can mix wax fragrances, buy a vessel and pour it yourself before leaving the class. Much more fun. read more
