French Quarter Grille - Stuffed Catfish

We had to kill time in Austin so hubby decided to try the French Quarter since it was on his list…read moreand close to our destination. It did not disappoint! We did not make reservations, I'd advise you to do it. However it was worth the 40 minute wait. The restaurant is very cozy with low lights. Great for a date or dinner party. We skipped the appetizer since we were running late but we will try one the next time. They bring you large flakey rolls and seasoned butter. Hubby had the catfish ponchatrain with red beans and rice and carrots. I had the beef and shrimp pasta with a brandy cream sauce. The food was so good! Our server Brooke was great. She made sure that we had everything we needed and our experience was good. Hubby ended the meal by getting the blueberry cheesecake and key lime pie to go. However, as we waited, another customer told us that the bread pudding was excellent. Then another customer told us that the chocolate cheesecake would give the bread pudding a run for its money. But as we sat and watched, several tables had the blueberry cheesecake brought to them to go. So I'd say leave room for desert!

We tried to go to happy hour with my partner's parents, but that was only available in the bar area. Given they have some health problems to consider, we could not move over and hover over teeny tables to have dinner so had to handle full price. At full price, I'd give it a solid 3.5. Bumped to a 4 because this is hard to find around here. We got: - shrimp yoli (if you only order one dish, get one with this SAUCE. It's to die for. The shrimp had too much seasoning that it was a little choke worthy and I NEVER complain about flavor. Just lighten up a little!) - escargot (the butter was broken.. so it was kinda rough) -catfish gumbo (solid portion) -redfish add lump crab (while we enjoyed this, it was pricy for what it was) -shrimp and crawfish pasta (good) -orange crème brûlée (light.. not my fav crème brûlée ever but fun to try) - chocolate cake brownie with ice cream

I'm certain I would have dozed off in one if we weren't called up. We sat outdoor alongside several other families with kids. The music wasn't super loud and the tables were generously spaced so we weren't close enough for other peoples' conversations to distract from our own. We then ordered the following: Smoked Fish Dip Maine Crab Cakes Brussels Sprouts Fish Sandwich Lobster Grilled Cheese Lobster Pot Pie The smoked fish dip was good but nothing crazy. My sister had suggested the fried calamari instead, but my love of bread overrode my familial devotion. The dip itself was moist with no excess liquid and spread easily onto the provided cuts of sourdough toast. My only critique is that the dip seems like it's missing something, but I'm not food-smart enough to know what. However, because of my bread bias, this is still a 4/5. The crab cakes on the other hand were amazing. There was no excess oil soaking the fried crust and the crab meat inside wasn't over-salted, as I've come to expect from most crab cakes. These were highly enjoyable with bites of avocado and mandarin in between to balance the fried elements. 4.5/5 The Brussels sprouts were well-roasted, with a nice vinaigrette coating their crispy outsides. I expect this level of quality for Brussels sprouts from American restaurants at this point, so no surprises, just good in general. 4/5 Skipping the fish sandwich as unfortunately I didn't get to try them, but it looked and smelled great. I had one bite of the lobster grilled cheese, so take this particular review with a grain of salt. The smokiness of the cheeses sits on top of everything else without overpowering, while the lobster, bacon, and tomatoes provide a great mix of fat and brine. This is a lowbrow surf and turf between bread, and it's perfect. 5/5 Finally, we come to my own order, the lobster pot pie. Unfortunately, I shared this with the aforementioned sister and didn't get the full experience. The dish came piping hot and fresh, and the puff pastry was flaky and not overbaked. Internals-wise, I could see myself eating just the cream sauce like a chowder. It was perfectly flavored with veggies and herbs, with regular chunks of lobster. Not too salty and absolutely decadent, would not share again. 5/5 Overall, this was a highly enjoyable experience with fast, not rushed, service and an amazing spread. This is an easy recommendation for a family-friendly restaurant with lowkey vibes, and I'll forsure visit again when I'm back in town.

I don't care what anyone says... this is the BEST SEAFOOD BAG BOILS around Austin... yes I know…read morethis is Round Rock but we live in Austin & have tried EVERY place here so we started surrounding areas. The service is top tier! The staff comes by to make sure you're good constantly so you never go long waiting for refills or to get some attention for an issue. The vibe is great, TVs on & the place is always clean. I read a review complaining about the napkins & buckets that's STUPID af. Don't come to a seafood place if tha bothers you. I love that they had the whole roll of brown paper towels so we don't have to keep asking. The buckets are super helpful to clear out the soft shells of the shrimp instead of piling on a plate. The FLAVOR is ALWAYS ON POINT!!! We even tried the other location but the Round Rock location beats it! We always go for date night. It's much lower priced than @Boiling Crab & taste 100x better than their soggy shrimp! Hook & Reel is just a hard pass... it's not flavorful. LA Crawfish is not good & Krab Kings is overpriced for mid food. I make my own seafood boils & ppl would rather buy from me than go to the other locations. Surfin Crab is the only one who beats me! Most times I can't even get a pic because we dive in! Oooh & food is always fast!

I walked into Surfing Crab hoping for one of those unapologetically messy seafood boils -- the kind…read morewhere you're tying your hair back, rolling up your sleeves, and mentally preparing to smell like garlic butter for the rest of the day. Sadly... this wasn't that experience. I ordered the boil with a pound of crab, head‑on shrimp, squid, corn, and those thin little sausage slices you see at most Cajun spots. The seasoning landed squarely in the middle -- not offensive, not impressive, just sitting there like it was waiting for someone to give it direction. I asked for hot, but what I got tasted more like a medium that didn't want to commit. And the shrimp? Head‑on and not deveined. That gave them a gamy, muddy undertone that took away from the whole boil. At this price point, deveining shouldn't be a luxury add‑on. We also tried the appetizer sampler -- calamari, egg rolls, cheese sticks -- and everything tasted suspiciously similar, like it all took the same little swim in the same fryer without a break. Nothing was terrible, but nothing had personality. These were the kind of appetizers you can find anywhere, and not the kind you remember later. My partner ordered the shrimp po'boy, and while the portion was generous, the breading overwhelmed the shrimp. He ended up peeling most of it off just to get to the actual protein. When the breading becomes the main character, that's a sign the dish needs editing. Now, the mixed drinks? Those were actually good -- balanced, not overly sweet, and honestly the highlight of the meal. And I have to give credit where it's due: our waitress was attentive, friendly, and checked on us consistently without hovering. She did everything right. The food just didn't match her level of service. And look... I'm not trying to be dramatic, but I've had better crab at HEB during crawfish season for a fraction of the price. When your grocery‑store boil is hitting harder than the restaurant version, that's saying something. Overall, Surfing Crab wasn't a disaster, but it wasn't memorable either. For the price and the concept, I expected more depth, more spice, and more care in the prep. This one's a pass for me -- especially when I know I can get fresher, better‑seasoned seafood elsewhere without the premium price tag.
