    My old classmate, Fiorella, still lives in AA and has been teaching us about true Peruvian cuisine. She's cooked for us several times now and I'm starting to understand the true power and flavour of authentic Peruvian fare. Our original exposure to Culantro was not very long ago in Ferndale. As it turns out, all of our takes were inaccurate. Something that was confirmed on today's visit. The empanadas were like biting into a pastry filled with only mild meat. No Black olives, egg or raisins. Disappointing. The ceviche (tilapia) had little flavour and zero spice. A boring waste of money. Is it possible to dilute fish? We've learned this is a dish that requires fresh fish. Today definitely was not. The atmosphere is pleasant and comforting and the only thing netting this place 1 star. It's bittersweet. We assumed on our earlier visit to the other location and sampling this food, bland as it was, was authentic. Having several sensational meals since, Culantro pales in comparison to actual Peruvian food. 11/24

    The experience here was phenomenal. I had a nice conversation with someone I assume is the business owner. This restaurant deserves any attention it can get, as it's one of the only genuine Latin American food spots in the area. The ambience was nice and modern. A good layout, for ordering your food and sitting down. The staff was very friendly. Most importantly, the food is absolutely delicious. Having eaten Peruvian cuisine multiple times, I can say that this is one of the best that I've tasted. We tried multiple things, and I can't say that they have anything bad on their menu. If you are in Ann Arbor, even if it's like me, where I come for a yearly retreat here, you need to make a stop in this place. You can thank me later

    At the heart of Ann Arbor, this place stands out in one of its corners. My Lomo Salteado was super delicious and tender with a side of ceviche great combo. The three milks dessert was superb as well. Service is fast and cordial. Recommended A++

    Meh. I visited a friend in Ann Arbor, and we wanted to try the new Peruvian restaurant that opened up. I've had a good amount of Peruvian food in the DMV (definitely no expert) and this was my friend's first time. You can order up front at the register and they'll give you a number to take to an empty table and bring you your food when it's ready. AJI DE GALLINA - 13 This is my third time having aji de gallina, so I definitely don't know what is authentic and what isn't. I personally didn't like this one as much as the two I've had before. I found this one to have way too much sauce, which had the consistency of clotted cream (dense and thick). The creamy yellow sauce had a strong onion taste, but I felt like it was lacking in the pepper and nutty flavors. It didn't really elevate the chicken, which were shredded in big pieces. Overall, I didn't like this and neither did my friend. The bed of rice on the side was lightly seasoned, which I enjoyed more. YUCA FRITAS - 6 My friend got an order of these for us to share. Their shape and coloring were pretty sad, like they've been left out for more than half a day and forgotten. The flavors were fine, but the yuca fries were a bit stale. The aji rocoto sauce was OK. My friend got a POLLO A LA BRASA for himself and was pretty unimpressed. He thought this wasn't too much better than the rotisserie chicken from Costco. The chicken was pretty dry even though it was dark meat. He did say the skin was crispy and well-seasoned. Overall, pretty mediocre experience. I would give it 2.5/5 if possible, but since Culantro is a pretty new establishment, I'm sure it will continue to improve.

    I can't speak to the authenticity of this food since I've never visited Peru or had it before. My friend who dined with me lived in Peru while serving in the Peace Corps and was impressed and said the food here was better than a lot of what she ate there, for what it's worth. I ordered the Chicha Morada drink hoping it wouldn't be too sweet, but only ended up drinking half of it. It kind of tastes like a Christmas punch, with a cinnamon and slight fruit taste but no alcohol. The beef empanadas were the star here; I could have eaten a ton of these. The beef was well seasoned, the dough was crispy, and the sugar on the outside gave it a nice sweet vs. salty balance. The Aji de Gallina was good but I was a bit underwhelmed. I'd like more chicken ideally. It had a nice flavor but the sauce was kind of an odd color and glossy texture. Maybe that's how it's meant to be with the type of peppers that are in it, I'm not sure, but it looked kind of artificial. I'd order it again, though. While I was at the counter ordering my meal I think one of the quarter of half chicken meals came out and looked absolutely amazing. I would certainly return to try out more of the menu and get the empanadas again.

    We've always been interested in trying more Peruvian food and came across Culantro as the top option. We finally decided to visit this past weekend for lunch and when we arrived, we found the restaurant to be pretty empty, which was a bit surprising. Culantro is fast casual, so you order at the counter, take a number, and find your own seats. They do bus the tables for you after you leave. We perused the menu for a bit and eventually went with two of the items that seemed the most interesting: Aji de Gallina ($13) - On one side is a large serving of rice with salty, toasty, meaty notes, seemingly first toasted in oil, then cooked in a rich chicken broth. There's a large serving of the Aji de Gallina on the other side. This consists of chunks of shredded chicken breast and sliced potato rounds in an amarillo based sauce. There's plenty of chicken in the dish and you can tell that it's been boiled, leaving it kind of dry and chewy. There are only two small potato rounds underneath all of the chicken. The yellow sauce here is quite interesting - it's extremely thick and viscous, almost like a goop. I guess thickened with ground walnuts? It mainly tastes of sweet vegetal pepper with only a very slight spiciness. The taste overall is quite mild and the dish seems like it could easily be considered a comfort food to eat when you're sick. The best comparison I could give is that it's like an extremely mild version of a hatch green chile sauce, not nearly as flavorful or spicy and without any smokiness/char. The dish is garnished with a black olive and a quarter wedge of hard boiled egg. I read up more about the dish afterwards and discovered that this dish is supposed to be very flavorful and very spicy. I can't really say that Culantro's interpretation meets those criteria. (3/5) Sandwich de Chicharron ($13) - This sandwich includes pulled pork, similar to carnitas, that's been deep fried to impart crispness on the edges. It's very tender and juicy and shreds easily. It's topped with a tangy red onion salsa criolla. There's chipotle sauce, which is smoky, sweet, and slightly spicy, that drenches everything and starts dripping out as soon as you lift the sandwich. The bun is big and dense, but not very fluffy, which doesn't allow it to encapsulate the ingredients very well. On the bottom bun, there's a layer of thinly sliced sweet potato - you can't really taste any of it through all of the sauce smothering the sandwich but it does impart a chewy texture. Unfortunately, the sweet potato also makes the bottom bun extra slippery and it makes it impossible to keep the ingredients from sliding out onto the plate. By the time you're a quarter done with the sandwich, you'll find that half the ingredients have slid out onto your plate. Not good construction in my opinion. In addition to the sandwich, you get commercial steak fries on the side. They're fried decently with a delicate crisp on the exterior and a fluffy interior. They aren't seasoned so you'll have to add salt or eat with ketchup. (3/5) Again, I'm not too familiar with Peruvian cuisine, so I can't say whether I don't like these particular dishes in general, or whether I don't like the dishes at this particular restaurant. Everything I ate was just okay, making Culantro a restaurant I'm not in any hurry to return to. Bathrooms: One all gender single room. Very modern eclectic decor. Overall rating of the food this visit: 3/5.

    I have been to the Ferndale location many times, so I was thrilled to see this spot in A2. It is every bit as fabulous. It's a small Dinning area, but is managed well. Beautiful, green plant decor and modern tables. They have take out boxes accessible, and you will need them! We loved: carne Ala plancha, , plantains, black beans, fried yuca, paella, Lomo saltado, jugo de maracuya, Inca cola and chicha morada

    Had the Lomo saltado and it was pretty good. Very salty but quite good and flavorful.

    La Bodega is a small Dominican store with groceries and prepared food. There are 3 small aisles of…read moregroceries - one with mostly drinks and refrigerated proteins, one with sauces and dry goods, and the last with some cleaning supplies. Towards the rear, there are racks of spices, a very small frozen food section (one freezer) and some produce. I'm guessing they don't actually sell any of the produce - it's probably just there as storage until they cook everything? The real magic of the store is in the back, where there's a small counter serving all sorts of delicious goodies. On a Saturday for lunch, there was a steady stream of customers picking up orders and eating. Just be aware that this is a family owned establishment that takes time to prepare food - lunch was supposed to start at 11:30AM, but they didn't have most of the menu ready until around 12:30PM. For people who are less patient, there is a prepared food counter with various meats and stews and a display with some fried foods. We opted for a couple of items: Fritura Mixta ($18.50) - Wow, this is a giant plate of fried meat and tostones. Deep fried beef, pork, chicken, longanisa, each one seasoned and drained well. Not greasy or oily at all. This is seriously a meat overload, in retrospect, we should have ordered a couple of additional sides because, to be honest, we aren't huge meat eaters. Still delicious. It took about 20 minutes to come out because everything was fried fresh. Cheese Bollitos ($2.50) - Think of a fried mashed potato croquette with a slightly different yucca flavor profile. These fried pastries aren't fried to order - instead they are probably fried in the morning and stuck in a heated display cabinet until they are ordered. They don't have the best crisp exterior and aren't exactly piping hot, but they are still good. Chicken and Cheese Empanada ($3) - These were definitely differently shaped vs. other empanadas I've had. Quite a long half moon filled with well seasoned chicken and rich cheese. Similar to the bollitos, these are not fried to order. We went back a couple of weeks later for some of the items on the dinner menu (only available after 5PM) that aren't served during lunch. It took around 25 minutes this time for the food to come out. Chimi de Pierna ($13) - This sandwich consisted of pulled pork, red cabbage, onions, and tomato on a super pillowy bun. The ingredients were heavily seasoned with a sweet and somewhat vinegery sauce that was quite similar to a bbq sauce. Be careful eating this one - since the bun is so soft, the ingredients start spilling out with every bite. Mofongo ($20) - Super garlicky, pretty classic mofongo mashed with chicharrones. Our meat of choice was additional chicharrones - super well fried with a great crisp and chewy fat. It came with two small containers of sauce that was not a normal mojo de ajo. It was limey, porky, very fresh, and paired perfectly with the carbs and proteins. I would definitely get this again. As a side note - they charge a 4% credit card fee. La Bodego is a great addition to the area. Definitely stop by to get some good Dominican food!

The feel inside the shop is welcoming and feels like home. It is clean and bright. The location is in a nice friendly neighborhood. You can tell the meals are prepared with love and aren't made with bulk ingredients instead they are all fresh and savory. I would highly recommend supporting small businesses and especially this one! Go in today to get authentic Dominican cuisine you will not be disappointed! I recommend the empanadas they are great!
