I've been there on various nights and have had a good time, each time. If you are not sitting at the bar, it can be very difficult to get a drink when it's packed. You are going to rub up on someone if it's crowded. You can't help it because the place is tiny. Actually, they only get three stars due to its size. There is usually some fun, pop music playing from the jukebox. You will definitely leave happy! Be careful when passing the bathrooms when it's crowded. Pretty decent. Good prices during happy hour and the bartender was nice and attentive. My friends and I stayed a while. Word of advice, don't waste your money on the jukebox. The staff (or quite possibly the owner) keeps jamming up the jukebox with their own music (pretty boring selections in my opinion...like the same Robyn song and typical 90s hits) and you never get to hear what you paid for (literally was there for hours and we did not hear our music). But this is a really small complaint. Generally, this is a good place to hang and drink. Would have gotten a higher rating if they accepted credit cards (it's cash only) and if a staff member (or the owner) didn't yell at the whole bar because someone spit in the sink (that was pretty unnecessary and interrupted the vibe). read more

I've been a regular at the Cubb for about five years and it's easily one of the best neighborhood bars in NYC, if not the best. I think of the other regulars and the staff as friends and almost family. Yes, it can get really crowded but that's because it is such a great place (and a tiny space, be prepared for a crush if you come on a Saturday afternoon/night.) The staff are generally warm and friendly although they aren't afraid to boot out a&&holes if necessary. I've seen only one fight in five years and it consisted of yelling and shoving, no fists or feet. One important note: it is a fusion bar and although it caters primarily to lesbians the crowd tends to be a mix of gays, les, straight, the occasional trans, and rarely unicorn hunters (a straight couple looking for a woman to join them for sex.) I think it's sad that there are so few lesbian bars in NYC but you should understand that the owner, who I know and who is a lesbian, has always maintained it as a fusion bar. As a cis male, I've had a few angry stares and the occasional rude bump from some ladies but by and large everyone is in good spirits. In my experience the staff are quick to toss out rude cis males who hassle the ladies and I'm happy to see them go. I've never seen a bar where you can walk in alone and within 5 minutes be engaged in a friendly conversation with someone by simply smiling and saying hello, almost all the time. The decor is a fantastic display of kitsch, the drinks are reasonable (especially considering you are in the West Village), and the atmosphere has a kind of beach party feel. Watch his eyes as he sees the small dive bar full of happy and fun loving women and relatively no guys in sight. Now it's up to you how long you'd like to let this carry on, obviously how oblivious your friend is will account for a lot. Now you can choose if you'd like to be cruel as you watch your one-track minded companion continually strike out with girls claiming they're not into men or if you could immediately break it to them that Cubbyhole is a lesbian bar. If your friend is upset, he shouldn't be your friend, but if you insist on keeping this person around, make him stay here and enjoy the bar. He won't be sore for long, Cubbyhole is awesome as long as you're not coming during prime times when the place gets so packed you won't be able to move, let alone get a seat (or so I've heard). Joking aside Cubbyhole is a cool place. Yes it's primarily a lesbian bar but even when I walked in and didn't see any men at the time (a few gay guys came in later), no one gave me dirty looks or an attitude (true, I was with a girl at the time). Yes the bartender could have been more attentive and the mixed drinks were a little watery but she treated everyone the same. The atmosphere here is cool, lots of festive decorations hanging from the ceiling, but as others have mentioned, this is a very small bar and gets packed. If you're a horny lesbian this seems to be a great hookup bar as it wasn't long before I saw a couple of girls going into one of the single occupancy bathrooms for a while. Cubbyhole has some of the cities best drink specials. I didn't memorize or photograph all the specials but just know that no matter what day or time you come here you can drink as much as you want for very very little. They usually have different specials depending on the day. They also have awesome things going on all the time. When I came they handed out free pizza and there was a drag queen going around making free balloon animals (G and X rated) of whatever you wanted (of course we tipped). It was just a blast here. My fiancé and I were out-of-towners visiting for the first time and we were immediately greeted with smiles. Not only behind the bar, but the other patrons as well. This was immediately comforting as we had visited Stonewall Inn right before and it was the opposite experience. So smiles were great! The service was pretty quick and the drinks were great. It's a lesbian bar and you'd better respect that when you're there, but you won't be made to feel out of place at all if you're a man, gay or straight. Aside from that, it's like a friendly local bar that's always packed. The decor is a bunch of colorful crap artfully and densely hung from the ceiling and looking great against the all-black walls. There aren't many places women can go to be around other women so with that being said I was surprised when I dropped in on Saturday that there were so many men there. It's a OK, place to go to have a drink or two but you must go early because it gets ridiculously packed and quick too. The smell in there reminds me of a boy, like a sweaty boy after he is done with a athletic practice and prior to showering. My g/f and I came to NY for the first time over Easter vacation from Chi-town. We stopped by at Cubbyhole the Sat. night before Easter around 10pm...the place was packed! Not much room to roam around but it seemed like a nice atmosphere. The bartender was pleasant and the crowd seemed like a decent, middle aged group. Again though it was a little too crowdy and cramped! Yes, it's crowded, like, I'm sorry I'm squeezing past your tits to get a drink and I know you have no where to back up because there are too many people behind you I swear I'm not a creep ice-breaker crowded. Yet it still manages to be like Cheers for lesbians (and lesbian friends - the clientele is actually pretty eclectic), it's charming decor - a ceiling stuffed with colorful, hanging paper decorations - and consistent drink deals (there is a hard liquor special every night of the week) have kept me and pretty much every other gay I know coming back to competitively romance the jukebox. Everyone is so friendly you may find yourself making the extra late-night stop and braving the crowd for a Whitney Houston dance-off even after experiencing a sardine-tin Saturday at this never-ending pride parade. read more

Music from the jukebox was hit or miss, ranging from the Beatles to rhianna. Bar tender was distracted so it was hard to get a drink, but they were reasonably priced. The crowd started to thin out around 1130. Oh, and the crowd was all women except the bar tender ranging in age from 21 to 40s. I can't believe that such a tiny place could hold so many people! You couldn't even breathe let alone touch your itching butt! I was not really looking forward to going here. I'm a gay male, and a room full of lesbians sounds like a breeding ground for fights lol, but this was far from the case. Crowd was super friendly. Very welcome to any and everyone with a great mixed crowd, and the jukebox made the music excellent (and very loud, but not so loud you can't have a conversation with someone new). We met a lot of people and had a great time. Bartenders were fantastic and drinks were great! Only downside is it's a bit away from the rest of the W. Village gay bars. It was raining, so a walk was not fun, but as a whole I loved the place. Would definitely come back here when I am back in NYC. read more
