The food was so bad I'm rethinking my admission decision. I went to Otter Express with someone and got a quesadilla and tenders with fries. Main issue is that quesadilla comes with salsa and sour cream. I told the cashier that it didn't come with food and she goes "oh we ran out so we didn't add it". No warnings beforehand, no discount, no apologies. Another thing, all three orders came IN ONE PLATE? It's reusable for Christ's sake this isn't even an environmental thing. Pretty sure we're missing an order of fries but kinda hard to tell when it's all tossed into One basket. Also the quesadilla came as whole tortilla, not even cut up. What, did they run out of knives too? No wonder so many students look so depressed, if they really cared about student health they'd invest in better food and better student workers. The DC is one big Russian roulette for food poisoning. CSUMB obligates students in certain buildings to take a meal plan because there is no kitchen. However obligation people to pay over $3.000 per semester for this shitty food is insane. I've had molded hamburgers & bagels, rotten tomatoes & raw chicken, just in the past week alone. I've contacted CSUMB multiple times about this situation but until now still no response. CSUMB takes 0 responsibility for this place. read more

first day of school and guess what I wake up violently ill. Had to go to HCOM worrying that I would have to rush to the bathroom at any given moment. The only edible thing here is the cookies and the salad. I shouldn't have eaten that sausage yesterday for breakfast. the amount of money I'm paying for a meal plan is not worth it when Starbucks and the otter express are right next door. I can't believe I'm writing a review for the DC. I used to go here everyday freshman and sophomore year. I'm graduating this semester. It's tempting to get pizza and fries twice a day everyday, but I suggest switching it up by going to the vegetarian station and taqueria. The taqueria can make you a burrito, taco, nachos, tortas, or burrito bowls. It's definitely not chipotle, but it's nice and convenient. Also just a block for unlimited buffet. The salad bar is dope. There's quinoa and tofu now (or at least in 2016).They're bagels by the salad bar too. Omelet bar is also a must try after going to a shitty party in East Campus. They're super greasy, but they're bomb! Don't forget to take a piece of fruit to go! I don't know what else to write. I love the DC, but I could just be easy to please. read more

Actually, we had lunch at the Otter Express two restaurants under one roof. Pretty impressive, but difficult to find. It's an order-at-the-counter and our food was well presented.. delicious, fresh cold crispy salad. The sushi was very tempting, however, we chose some standard American fare. We were not disappointed. Very eco-friendly, nice staff, clean, crowded, but not over-crowded. read more

This place is pretty decent. I usually come during lunch time. Their taco/burritos bar is my favorite spot. The variety is good and they have healthy options as well as fun food like pizza, burritos, grilled cheese. They also have a soft serve machine which is super fun! read more

For a university cafeteria, this place is top notch. It serves the student body very well, and there are rarely any lines longer than one or two people. It is all-you-can-eat, so you just pay at the door and get after it! I recommend the burrito station. The only knock I have is that the menu doesn't change often enough. The dining commons is not ask that great. Sure they do occasionally have decent food, but it is really hit or miss. This review is actually being written in the dining commons. Came here for brunch and my stomach is hurting, which is pretty common to happen since I have been coming here for about four years. Sudexo has a monopoly on this campus and you need a meal plan when you live on campus which in turn gets you stuck here. Go somewhere for food. read more

I have attended CSUMB since I was a Freshman, I spent four semesters eating the refuse they pass as food here so I believe I can write a truly fair review of the University Dining Commons (or the DC for short). Fist off, I want to say I recognize half the people who left 4 star+ reviews as either employees of the DC or the University, its not really fair to write reviews praising your own workplace. Secondly, the staff here have generally been very helpful and I can not think of a single time when the person who PREPARED my food was rude (this will come in later with the manager). Now, I understand how people would think this is a okay place to eat when they visit or after a month eating what they serve, but after some time, everyone I know becomes sick and tired of their food. While it is all you can eat, the meat is often cold and dry because they either left it out too long or because they are trying to serve meals the students did not eat yesterday. This is a common theme here and I have seen it hundreds of times where they serve chicken one day and the next day there's sliced, dry chicken on top of the rice bowls they serve. Worst thing there is the pizza though. IF YOU TRY THE PIZZA, EXPECT TO BE SICK THAT NIGHT. Fortunately I am not talking about intestinal parasite sick, but leaning over the toilet throwing up sick. I've seen how they make some of their pizza, its by taking separate ingredients which are scheduled to expire or have already expired and using them as toppings. I have seen them serve hamburger pizza with mustard used instead of tomato sauce multiple times (they list it as that on the menu)! I have made the manager aware of the complaints most of the school has against the pizza and he basically attacked me saying they use the same recipes that you will find at dominoes or round table (absolute lie! the hamburger pizza is proof, and even dominoes doesn't use week old meats or vegetables) and "unless you have proof from a doctor, it was not the pizza that made you sick". The entire time he raised his voice and was absolutely menacing. I was only trying to make him aware of the bad experiences many of the customers and I have had, but I was immediately attacked and shut down, I can not imagine how the employees feel working under him. I don't blame the servers or the food prep for the bad meals they serve, they all try their best to make a appetizing dish. The problem is the corporation SODEXO, which ships ingredients, recipes, and menus to the DC. Like all corporations they are in the business to make money leading to them using the lowest quality ingredients and are responsible for the practice of reusing old and expired food. Unless they radically redesign the way they operate I will not buy from them again. You may think: but John if the food is so trash why did you eat there every day for four semesters? Good point. The way the school is contracted, SODEXO pushes buying blocks and flex which are put on an account tied to your student ID. These meal points are only usable on campus, which is entirely run by SODEXO (minus two coffee shops which operate with their permission). In addition, if you live on campus in the residence halls, excluding four buildings you only have access to a public refrigerator and shared kitchen. Excluding those four buildings, if you live in the dorms you are REQUIRED to buy a meal plan. At the end of a semester, the blocks (points worth $5, worth one entry to the DC for a student) expire and there are no refunds or rollovers. This way they can serve terrible food and will always have customers. For every meal they have between 4/6 stations running serving food. Some meals it will all be bland, dry, and tasteless, while others will have 2-3 stations serving decent food. If you take a plate and it tastes terrible, you don't need to eat it. Its a buffet so you can just walk back and take something else. Some days students will come in and measure how much food students throw away and they will definitely shame you for wasting food.
