Rocky Mountain Watch Repair

Downtown

Rocky Mountain Watch Repair is a kiosk-like business that lives on the second level of the Gateway…read moreShopping Center. Its primary business is selling silver, costume, and body jewelry, and some low-end watches. But running the business is Robby -- a guy who actually knows watches and knows how to repair them. I brought in my Hamilton Jazzmaster automatic watch because the rotor had come loose. Robby examined the watch, told me about the problem, candidly advised that he needed to take the watch home to work on because bearings and screws might come out in disassembling the mechanism, asked me about replacement if necessary, and gave me a quote for a time that it would be done. He was able to do the repair, and it cost about $35. The watch runs very well now, and I would trust him to do this sort of repair on expensive mechanical/automatics in the future. Based on that good experience, I returned to have a few new watches, with L-bar bracelet link pins that I couldn't get out at home, replaced, and 1 spring pin replaced. Robby was out, but his assistant, Sam, was there. He was extremely friendly, and though perhaps not as expert as Robby--I had to help him hammer in some of the pins while he held them in place-- he was competent. They charged me about $25 to size three watches, with lifetime resizings for free, and to replace the spring bar. It was not an insignificant amount of time, and I feel like it's good value. Though I wish Sam would have polished the watches when he was done. The one negative that causes RM to lose a star is that they only staff with one person at a time, so if a customer comes in to, say, buy a chain, the repair gets put on hold while the employee sells the jewelry. This causes some slowdown, particularly if you have to be in the store while the repair is taking place -- i.e. you have to try out the watch sizes... I was there for over an hour. But my situation was rather unique, and I wasn't in a huge hurry. Just know that you should probably drop off the watch if you can rather than stay around and wait for the repair. Good, friendly people. Quality work, affordable prices. You may want to go to a jewelry store and pay too much for some of these services, but don't let the small storefront and slightly sketchy inventory fool you, Rocky Mountain Watch will satisfy.

I called three times, couldn't get the guy that fixed the watches even after leaving voice messages and regular messages. I finally called and got him on the phone...he'd screwed up the name and number. I gave him my name and number again. Another month goes by, no word. I resumed calling him, leaving messages. I finally went in and cornered him again. He lost the name and number and promised the watches in a week. A week goes by and....yup, same drill. Two and a half weeks later I corner him. He promises the watches by the weekend. I arrive on the weekend and...he left the watches home. Three hours later I come back...again. The watches were cleaned and set correctly. Total time elapsed, two days less than three months. The guy does good work, but his business habits are atrocious.
