Sauerbraten was tender and tasty, weinerschnitzel was outstanding, spaetzle delicious as always and perfect potato pancakes! The pretzel was soft and delicious and the beer is always a bonus! Friendliest warm staff- this time we had Laura who is efficient, helpful and so very sweet! Penny stopped by to say hello- another outstanding server and so happy to see her back for a new season! If you're looking for a bit of Germany in the Catskills, this is your place to go. The restaurant's decor pulls you straight out of the states and instantly in the Deutchland countryside. The waitresses are very kind and dressed in traditional German dresses and the live music is a great touch. To start, I ordered a Long Island Iced Tea that had a bit too much punch to it. The alcohol ratio was quite off and was very hard to drink. I asked for a soda to try and dumb it down, but was only able to get about half way through it. Though this was my fault for not ordering a beer at a German restaurant, I still would have liked the drink to be a bit tastier and is unfortunately the only thing keeping this review from being a shinning 5-stars. For my meal I ordered the sauerbraten which did NOT disappoint! The beef was very tender and the vinegar mixed with the gravy was the perfect level of sour and hearty. The red hot red cabbage was hot and flavorful and the potato pancakes were perfectly cooked. The side of applesauce put on top of the potato pancakes added the right amount of sweetness. A friend got the special rouladen which I got a taste of and was very delicious. The pickles inside were flavorful and the meat was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The menu is a bit pricey, but the portions are deceptively filling. I definitely expected to be hungry after but I finished my plate absolutely stuffed! Overall, this was a great experience and would recommend anyone looking for a taste of Germany to give this a try. read more

I have a LOT to say about my stay here at Crystal Brook Mountain Brauhaus Resort. I came here for a solo weekend getaway to explore the Catskills and I would absolutely return here every time. When I checked in with Wendy, I could tell my stay would be very welcoming. She was very friendly and informative as to what the resort offers and she even gave me suggestions for nearby hiking trails. The lounge area is neatly designed, with a piano and photos littered all over the walls. It almost feels as if you're in someone's home. Very cozy. When I got to my room I was a little surprised with how small it was, albeit being exactly what I wanted. This may not suit everyone, so just be sure you understand what you're paying for. It's a bit antiquated with a nice charm and simplicity to it. I had no problems with the setup (especially considering how clean it was) other than having to drink the water from the faucet. Wendy assured me that it was clean and that's the way it is there, and it tastes fine, but I want to just put that out there. The wifi can also be a bit spotty, which personally I didn't care because I was there to get away from it all. But for those of you who absolutely need a strong internet connection, bear that in mind, especially since cellular service can be limited in certain spots out in the mountains. There's a pool nearby available for use, alongside the fantastic Mountain Brauhaus restaurant and some small trails only a walk's distance away. Breakfast is provided every morning from 8 to 10 and the food is cooked per order. You can get as much as you want and best believe I took advantage of that . The food was very tasty and had different offerings each morning to keep it interesting. The restaurant (not included) is the primary dinner offering. It's German styling is wonderful and I really liked that the staff also wear German outfits. I had gotten one of the German beers, their special which was a Rouladen, and a Plum Cake for dessert. The beer was crisp and refreshing. The Rouladen and the Plum Cake were FANTASTIC and I cleaned my plate fully. Portions were very fair. Overall I absolutely loved my stay at Crystal Brook Resort. The only thing that threw me off was the drinking water situation and the iffy WiFi, but even that can be overlooked considering the cost to stay here. I think everything was affordable and proved to be worth every penny. Definitely going to return here when I come back to the Catskills. read more

I have a special place in my heart for Crystal Brook and first want to say the staff have been so incredibly warm and kind to me every time I've have visited - they have treated me like family. The live band is so much fun to watch, and the atmosphere is on the whole wonderful. Great beer, great time and worth a visit. The food does not rank for me. It's edible and scratches the itch if you're craving some German food. But it is objectively not the best. The last three times I have come here there has been a patron dressed in full German WWII attire, and some may find this triggering. In Germany this would not be tolerated. I remain open that I've misunderstood something but for this reason and the quality of the food it's enough for me to look elsewhere for my German food. read more

I recently spent an evening as I had friends staying nearby. It was so quiet and so beautiful. I wish I could have stayed longer. I booked a room for one and it was teeny-tiny. Room for dresser, TV, chairs, etc., but small, and it was great. Clean and cozy. A door led out to a shared balcony which was a peaceful and relaxing. Having a table set for me and a personalized breakfast was also terrific. Delicious and generous portions. Loved it. Lots of the owners' family around which made it more like a B&B. The only thing I would say in the negative was how empty it was. They had many rooms available and, frankly, this strikes me as the type of place that should be booked up. Not sure if it's a hidden gem or not, but I encourage you to give it a try. read more

Owner Wendy is a very friendly and accommodating person, as are all of the staff I encountered. The Brauhaus at the resort is a fun and worthwhile place to visit and grab a drink. The food was mediocre in my humble opinion. The daily breakfast at the resort is quite good. My only complaint is the odor in the room. It was a bit overwhelming, although the price of the room was quite reasonable compared to other resorts in the area. read more

Overall I was very disappointed. There were 4 of us that decided to try it out since we've tried most of the other German style restaurants within 40 mile radius. First, we ordered the pretzel as a appetizer, we received that after we were done with our meal. The meal itself was nothing fantastic. I had the Schnitzel, it was beat so thin that I probably could get a thicker piece at any store deli, being that it was so thin only made it dry and not at all enjoyable. We also ordered the black Forest cake, again I've never received a thinner piece, you could almost see thru it. The place is very comfortable and I'm sure more enjoyable with the live music that they provide in the evenings. Not a place that I'm eager to return to. read more

If your looking for authentic German atmosphere , come to this place and be transported. Of the many German restaurants I have been to outside of German, this one reminds me the most of being there. They have communal tables and serve authentic in-house made everything! Our waitress was Penny. She was amazing! We stopped in on a rainy day, to have their schlachtfest dinner which was great. They do offer a full menu with homemade desserts and a full array of German beers. The restaurant is located as in the grounds of their resort. The grounds are beautiful and we even got a chance to explore a trail and see an amazing waterfall nearby. As much I wish to keep this place a secret, the worlds deserves to know about it and they deserve many many many new customers. read more

The atmosphere was very authentic, the service was great and the live band plying polka music was fun. However, the food was nothing to write home about. We live near Saratoga and was looking for a German Restaurant for our friends birthday. We decided to take a ride and give it a try. We are so glad that we did. We had a fabulous time. As soon as we walked in, we knew that we had come to the right place. The atmosphere was exactly as we had hoped. It reminded us of a true German beer garden. All of the staff were very friendly, especially our waitress, Patty. Very down to earth and helpful with any questions that we had about the menu. They had a large selection of German beers and we weren't disappointed. All of our meals were absolutely delicious. Two of us ordered the special pork dish with homemade noodles and red cabbage. Our other dinners were the sauerbraten served with potato pancakes and red cabbage and the knockwurst served with homemade noodles and saurkraut. Everything was excellent and the Servings were large but we all cleaned our plates. We finished with coffee and two of their homemade desserts. Again, delicious. A very good band played throughout our meal and definitely added to the ambiance of this wonderful place We will definitely be back again soon before winter rolls around. Tried the hungarian goulash which was 7 small cube of meat with watery tastless sauce over what appeared to be store bought or badly made spaetzle for $24. We just had a family reunion at crystal brook About 20 mostly Italian Americans from Brooklyn NY, in a mostly German place. How did that work out you say? It was AWESOME. The food incredible Fresh, plenty and tasty. And you know how critical aunt Lucy straight from sicily can be about the food . Wow, Crystal Brook is tons of fun! Although the clientele are mostly card carrying AARP members they know how to party. We were there until 1am and danced the night away (Live band!) with old people while drinking delicious but super cheap beers. The Mountain Brauhaus is THE place to be for great german food, music and beer while visiting the Catskills. They are open from May to November, Wednesday to Sunday, but it is Friday and Saturday nights that are the best. First time I was here was in 1983 and I've never forgotten. My friends father lived in one of those trailer parks near there and we escaped to the Brauhaus. It was a Saturday night and the place was packed, the band was mediocre, the beer was cold, the women were cool and I was hot under the collar. It was a moment in time, gone forever. It was an invincible summer and everything was right with the world. It will always have a special place in my heart. We went today, 7/20/19, for the 4th Annual Mountain Brauhaus Fest. We have been here a few times before but this is a first for the fest. This is the Catskills and most places are a little worn. What's presented to the customers is what makes up for anything that you might find a little worn. The fest was set up with a very large tent that had 4 long rows of tables, was well decorated with Hofbrau Haus paraphernalia, had a bar inside the tent at one end and a large stage at the other. When we got there about 6:00 PM the Jimmy Sturr Orchestra was set up and getting ready to play and were booked for 6-10. Great music. The food was the same as served in the restaurant. The beer on tap was Hofbrau Haus. A good German beer. Prices were very reasonable for food and beer. A full souvenir stein for $15 and refills for $12. A 12 ounce cup was $7. We may go back tomorrow and will go again next weekend. read more

A family owned, authentic-as-they-come German restaurant and dance hall. Decorated as if you are in the black forest, the place features live music, traditional dancing, even bell ringing on the weekends. Beer on tap, late night snack platters and an assortment of German specialties. The staff are super friendly, even if somewhat slow because they do everything themselves. I used to come here as a child, back when the Catskills were trendy to go to. Now, unfortunately, there is a certain "dying out" feeling at any of the resorts, and the Brauhaus is attached to Crystal Brook resort. As such, you have mostly old-timers and on the weekdays it's pretty dead. Oh, and if you're vegetarian, they have added a veggie burger to the menu. This place is AWESOME - totally kitschy in a good way! I had a meetup with a large group here the night before my nearby wedding and everyone had a blast. There was live polka music and dancing (though all of the dancers were defintely in their golden years) as well as German beers on tap. CAUTION - They will not refund cancel reservations! I get it that this is a mom and pop operation and they don't take credit cards for reservations. They require a $50 deposit for a room, which I sent. I had to cancel my trip (with plenty of advanced notice) and they told me on the phone they will send back my deposit. I have never been to the resort so this review is only for the mountain Brauhaus. We went there late September 2020 and granted, the Covid crisis was still going on, but the dining room was fairly empty and service should not have been an issue. First of all they had no record of my reservation that I had called in at least a week in advance, But they did find us a table for our party of six. We waited at least a half hour just to receive menus, and this was after I went up to the bar three different times asking if we could have our menus. The service throughout the night was terrible. After we did receive menus we waited another 10 to 15 minutes for her to come and take our orders. 15 minutes later we got our drinks, and appetizers took a good 20 minutes to come out. The band was excessively loud and we were shouting to be heard by each other. When the food came out it was mediocre - certain things such as the potato pancakes were very good, spetzle was very good also. We think that next time we are in the mood for German food we will go elsewhere. read more

I stayed here on a pair of weekdays and I found the service good and friendly. They have a nice little tennis court and pool which are good for leisure. I enjoyed the whole scheduled meal thing, so you know exactly when to show up and do not have to wait long for your food. Scheisse, this place is awesome! Awesome in an "everyone here is over 80 years old but having the time of their lives" kind of way. This starts off like a bad joke: A jew, a german, a black guy, and an irish chick walk into a bar. There were strange looks and I'm pretty sure the band came to a screeching halt. But seriously, $2.75 .3 liter beers (good beers!), a live band, everyone dancing, super friendly staff and helpful staff (one woman gave my friend a dance lesson), and the fact that this place is in the absolute middle of nowhere and it was packed with really old people dancing (and dancing with us!) and having a genuinely great time made it a sincerely fun and awkward night out. The only down point is the food. It wasn't very good, although the potato pancakes reminded me of exactly how my grandfather used to make them, which is, kind of soggy, but I enjoyed them nonetheless, if only for nostalgic reasons, and the sausages were boiled instead of grilled. When we left at 1, drunk for around $20 / person (so awesome), there were still people dancing. I hope I'm like that when I'm old. Totally my old people role models. read more

I loved it! I was just looking for a place to stay near my friend's house so I could visit and have a place for my family to stay. And boy, did I pick the right place! Not only was it clean, the food good, the pool and games great, and the staff wonderful, but the Brauhaus was awesome! I was there for a long weekend, and all 3 nights were spent there, even though I could have mixed it up a little. But we all had such a good time, I didn't want to chance going anywhere else. The decor and outfits really enhanced the experience. But the best part was Saturday night when the schuhplattler dancers came out. Two couples (the men were the owners' sons), gave us quite a treat with their traditional dance. I wish I lived nearby. We're definitely going to make this an annual tradition. Great atmosphere, beer and food. The food is authentic German but the goulash was a little tame. Everything else rocked. Their food is very tasty and plentiful. My husband's only complaint was wanting German mustard and not Goulden's mustard. The service was good and very friendly.
