Sauces for the kebab
Rebecca T.

Their food was amazing!!!!!!! Given with so many choices of eateries in Amsterdam at 11pm on a Thursday night, which made it hard to decide what we wanted to eat as our first meal in Amsterdam, we decided to walk into this place because it smelled good and the photos looked good. We sat down and later found out it got a pretty good rating on Yelp! Although it looked like you order at the counter, there's actually waiting service in the restaurant so we were seated and offered a menu. We got the mixed plate to share between the 2 of us which included kebab, salad and rice for 18€. It's one of the best middle eastern meals we've had! Everything was perfectly seasoned and the meat were perfectly cooked with tenderness and flavor. Because they used halal meat, the quality was also significantly better. To make it even better, their chunky tomato sauce, spicy sauce and white creamy sauce complemented the dish very well. Service was efficient but nothing friendly in particular, but the food was so good for a decent price. It's 5 stars for sure!

Falafel and Salad Bar

They offer a nice hot meal in a comfortable dinning room. Their prices are better than other restaurants in the area. I went to to restaurant multiple times on a trip to Amsterdam. I always got the falafel and salad bar.

kapsalon with lamb

1 word drew my attention to this restaurant - KAPSALON. Service: Quite lacking! I waited 5 minutes to get a table even though the place was empty. Didn't get a menu, had to ask to place order, but food srrived pretty quick. Ordered a drink, but later was frowned upon for asking for tap water. Other restaurants in Holland were not as unfriendly considering that I ordered at least 1 drink. Food: Holey moley, delicious! Kapsalon is shawarma meat (chose lamb, but can get chicken) dressed salad, melted cheese, spicy red sauce, and ranch on top of Belgian fries. Taste is reminiscent of a New York halal truck - except the meat/salad/sauce combo goes on top of fries instead of rice/salad. Can't really go wrong with the combo. Bottom Line: 4 star food, 2 star service. Would return to order to-go. If you aren't counting calories, try the kapsalon with lamb.

Crystal is a great little spot to get some local and meditteranean snacks. The place itself is really nice and so is the staff. It seems like everything is done with finesse. I ordered a simple Shoarma Pita but what really made it special was the condiments it comes with. They give you a giant serving of 3 really tasty homemade toppings that really allows you to be creative. You should really stop in and try it out.

The menu has photos but they do not do the food justice. Here are the plates we had : ) delicious!

Excellent food!! We were very pleasantly surprised with both the quality and the flavor of the food here. Prices were reasonable for Amsterdam and the workers/cooks were all friendly and helpful. We will definitely be going back!

Stopped in for falafel and fries. The toppings bar offered several choices. Food was fast, hot and tasty. Portions good.

A tasty lunch

Everything as far as I can tell is made to order (other than the halal meat), but their Kip Special was pretty damn good.

I walked in, and the guy behind the counter seemed a bit pushy, but I mean what halal place isn't right? Good thing is, you can see them grilling and preparing your food. So after all that I've seen and smelled, I decided to dine in. I had to sample everything, so I went with the Mixed Grill Plate. Sorry as I don't recall the price, but I don't remember it costing very much. The plate consisted of a tasty ground lamb kabab, another skewer with beef chenjeh I believe. Or basically a skewer of marinated sirloin beef. Very tasteful in my opinion. There was some slices of chicken shawarma as well which was also full-flavored and delish! All of it sat on some mixed greens and a side of fries. Talk about stuffing my face in hunger! The whole plate was totally filling, and pretty much put an exclamation point to my eating night. As for dining, there were larger tables in the rear of the restaurant, and tables meant for two in the front. Service, I had no issue as the manager (possibly owner) presented my plate and made sure I was fully attended to. He came back several times to check if I needed anything. There really wasn't anything super fancy about this place, but I didn't mind it. It was fast, simple, and filling to say the least. I totally recommend giving these guys a try. They even have other plates, grilled chicken, falafels, and various wraps. as well. Something I'll try on my next visit.

The people running this place are crooks disguised as middle eastern people running a restaurant!…read moreThe amsterdam police should shut them down. They offer pieces of bread as if they were free of charge - but when you are about to pay they add it to your bill even when you have taken only a small sample of the bread. And with their fries, they will offer you some sauce (as if it was included in the set price) - only to be billed $1.95 for a very small packet of sauce. Too bad Netherlands got them as immigrants -- these people should not be allowed to exist as they only give amsterdam a bad name.

This is a surprising place... and an eclectic one. When I saw the mixed-up cuisine-focus on the…read moresign I was a bit confused at first. Touted primarily as an Indonesian Restaurant, it also qualifies itself as an Indian eatery, as well as presenting the cuisine of Suriname - and doing it all under the umbrella of being Halal (which may also mean "Pradesh"). Now that's a lot of cuisines, all from different corners of the globe. But then I recalled my week shooting a movie in Belize a decade ago, and there was the connection. In Belize there seems to be an unwritten rule (or tradition) that was proudly announced by our liaison from the film office. And that was that ALL OF THE GROCERY STORES (the country only had small mom & pop places) in Belize City were owned and run by Indians from India; and the most popular food, being Chinese steam table take-out joints like we have in America (fried rice, spring rolls, noodles, sweet & sour chicken/shrimp, spicy saucy stir fried meat & vegies, etc...), and these places were always packed with lines around the corner. They were also ALL OWNED AND RUN by Vietnamese extended families. And the Vietnamese community mixed very well with the Indian families, having similarly imported ingredients from afar, as well as exotic flavors, similar spices, rice based cuisines, and they both cooked curries. Now for Suriname and Indonesia and how those two food cultures fit into the menu profile at Restaurant Riaz. I have eaten a lot of Indonesian food in my day, and its flavor pallet is very similar to India, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, all using coconut milk, peanuts, chili-peppers, potatoes, green peppers, fish-sauce, vegies, and similar meats and seafoods, plus blends of sweet and salty and spicy and sour; and all of them use rice. Now the thread that sews Suriname to these others is that it was also a Dutch Colony, as were Indonesia and parts of India (like Sri Lanka [Ceylon at the time]). So the Dutch created huge incentives for the Indians in their empire to relocate to the sparsely populated Suriname; and these Indians brought their food with them. So when I ate lunch in New York City at a Surinamese place in The Bronx, I was surprised to see the menu filled with Curries, Chutney, Samosas, Fried Pakoras, and everything was served with rice and Indian Roti, (an oily flour tortilla-like bread), often accompanied by a small bowl of rich brown Curry-Gravy to dip into. The food from Suriname was Literally INDIAN FOOD. Thus the culinary story of Restaurant Riaz and its diverse menu started to make a lot of sense. The Indonesian food complimented the Surinamese meals; and the Indian dishes blended seamlessly with the other cuisines. And the Roti and Curry-Gravies went perfectly with everything. Restaurant Riaz is a big success story in my book. I can't wait to come here again - and this time I am going to bring a whole bunch of friends.

The restaurant offers a varied menu inspired by classic Indonesian dishes and promotes a relaxed welcoming atmosphere with the option to request specific dishes in advance including lobster or seafood with prior notice. We were seated without a reservation which was convenient and appreciated. The service was a bit grumpy and not the warmest but still attentive and functional throughout the meal. While the hospitality did not fully match the restaurant's stated philosophy it did not ruin the experience. The food itself was good and satisfying with rich flavors that felt true to Indonesian home style cooking. The rice table in particular looked absolutely delicious and tempting though our group ended up ordering more selectively due to picky eaters at the table. It is definitely something I would want to try on a future visit. Overall SAMPURNA delivers solid Indonesian food and a genuine traditional approach. Despite imperfect service I would return especially to try the rice table next time.

We ordered the Kuning Rice Table, the smallest of the three tasting-menu-style options. Despite being the smallest it came with an unbelievable amount of food! I loved getting to try so many different indonesian dishes, everyone loved something different! The service was very fast, and the food was brought out on hot plates to keep everything warm. They are also very accommodating for vegetarian/vegans - they were able to swap out the meat dishes for the vegetarian in our group while still doing the full-table tasting menu.
