I really wanted the Taro Cake but whimped out when considering the taste of who I'd be sharing it with, but did get to try it. It taste, both in profile & texture, like a sweet potato. Purchased a Vanilla Strawberry Fresh Cream Cake. It was light in texture, not terribly different from Angel Food Cake, but absent of other flavors. Less sweet cakes often have overtones of almond or citrus that shine through, but this tasted like a vanilla cake minus the sugar. When I sliced into it I was hoping for more of a strawberry puree inside, but it appeared to be just sliced strawberries & a whole lot of unsweetened whipped cream. A little 1 dimensional for me. It was packaged beautifully w/ a lady finger & birthday candle. The gentleman working the counter was super helpful & I look forward to trying the Matcha & other flavors in the future. This one was a miss for me. While I barely have a sweet tooth, I need a little more going on than what was presented. That's a preference, not a criticism.

I stood there for approximately seven minutes before a young man finally came out and asked how he could help. I explained that I was there for a pickup but also wanted to purchase mini cakes. At that exact moment, two white customers walked in, and Emily immediately appeared from behind the counter, eager to assist them. The young man told her that I was waiting, that I had a pickup, and that I intended to make a purchase. Emily responded by saying that "paying customers are the priority." That statement was shocking, especially considering I had already been waiting and had clearly stated I was also there to make a purchase. Good customer service prioritizes people in the order they arrive not based on assumptions. When I spoke up to clarify this, Emily came over and said she doesn't know when orders come in and offered me a complimentary water. I declined. By that point, her demeanor had shifted noticeably once she realized I was not who or what she had assumed based on the color of my skin. Her surprise at my professionalism, politeness, and articulation was evident. When I asked for her name, she understood the weight of the moment. I am deeply disappointed to have experienced such dismissive and racially biased treatment. Racism whether subtle or overt has no place in customer service or anywhere else. Women like me take up space in this world, and we deserve the same basic respect, kindness, and service as anyone else when we walk into an establishment.

I met some of the most wonderful people running Baker - Turk Thatcher (retired), Beth Tiewater (no longer there) and of course the power couple who started this non-profit - Weezie and Charlie Baker. The Bakers founded this non-profit in their garage 45 years ago as a way to allow their son born with difficulties the opportunity to find satisfaction and achievement through work. This concept expanded to their Malvern location and downtown Philadelphia location. They've been the hand up to 100's of people from disadvantaged beginnings to earning a living wage and becoming productive members of society. They accept no federal or state funds and that is an amazing fact. With Weezie's recent passing I hope and pray that they will continue to be a force for good in their community.
