My wife and I have used Crown twice this past year and had great experiences both times. First we consulted with the owner about buying a sewing machine and got good advice about current models and a good price on the model we chose. Then our Miele vacuum cleaner, which we bought 25 years ago at Gracious Homes, started making an annoying whistling sound that we couldn't figure the cause of. The owner correctly diagnosed the problem and fixed it at a good price, which saved us from having to buy a new one. The shop itself is not to be missed; on a block that has lost too many recently (Absolute Bagel, Garden of Eden, etc.). read more

The kind of Old New York Fixit place you can't hardly find anymore. Mark has kept my sewing machines and vacuums out of the landfill for years. You have to go along with his quirks: cash deposit, for which you get a ticket (lose it and you lose your appliance), then you pay the balance, with cash, when he calls to say your item has been fixed. The tiny shop is piled high with broken small appliances and electronics waiting their turn to be repaired, but also with new ones, mostly quality brands. Mark does not suffer fools gladly; I've seen him get pretty sharp with demanding customers. But when there's an attitude of mutual respect, he's a pleasure to work with. I had a great experience with Crown Machine. I was struggling to find a place to service my vacuum and didn't want to contribute to so much consumer waste by just throwing it out. It was $40 cash to evaluate the machine and was told I'd receive a call the following week letting me know the results. I received a call exactly 8 days later letting me know they had located the issue exactly and that the repair would be $98 cash plus tax. The $40 for the assessment counted towards the final charge as well and I was told I could pick it up later that day. There is usually a small line but I find it's because this is one of the last shops on the UWS where the owner has natural demeanor in customer interaction and chats a bit with each customer. He even quipped when a patron went to produce the instruction manual that if a repair shop needed one that was a red flag - and I believe it. Impressed by the diverse knowledge in sewing machines, typewriters, vacuums of every manufacturer and happy to have my machine back. Removed one star for cash only but really didn't bother me in the end because I've found a place to do reliable repairs now. read more

Something has changed. I recently called to ask about repairing or replacing parts for irobot roombas and shark vacuums. I was shouted at and phone slammed on me. Apparently they only service Miele vacuums now. Thought it was just a bad day but a few months later called about a lamp repair and had the same yelling and slamming phone result. I'm afraid to call again or walk in. Ive been a customer for 30 years and it's a huge loss for the neighborhood community if service continues this way. If I hadn't had such wonderful service for so many years this would have been a zero star review. read more

The inside of this place is a mess! It feels like an old beat up garage that has not been swept or cleaned in years. There are old machines, vacuums, you name it hanging around on shelves all over the place. My mom brought in a sewing machine machine to be fixed and they needed a down payment in cash to assess what needed to be done. Luckily the area has every bank you could think of, within walking distance: Bank of America, Chase, Citi Bank, Santander Bank, and TD Bank. Upon our return from one of these banks, Mark mentioned that they also fixed computers, old VCRs, Stereos, Vacuums, and I basically got whiplash because once I heard computers, I thought about my old HP computer from college that needed some TLC and a hard reset but no one has been able to help, not Geek Squad, nor computer savvy folks I entrusted it to. So we left the old computer, an old stereo, and a limited edition singer machine in their care to be made brand new. My computer has been laid to rest and the stereo was not worth the repair price. However, after months of back and forth my mother's machine finally got fixed. read more

Just to be clear, and we can then consider the matter closed; I did not bring the machine back a year after repair. I brought it back a year after I originally brought it in to be fixed. It took four and a half months for you to return the "repaired" device to me. And that four and a half months went by with an equal amount of unreturned calls from you, after leaving multiple messages. Additionally, I visited your shop, which is nowhere close to my home, on three separate occasions during open hours as shown on your website, only to find lowered safety gates and a closed shop on each occasion (as other reviewers have pointed out as well. Local small business and INCREDIBLY kind owner. I had a brand new Miele vacuum that I spent a ton of money on and I was freaking out when I bumped it into my coffee table and a piece fell off. I spent over an hour on the phone with Miele customer service where they offered no help outside of recommending I take my machine to a local service center which is how I found Crown Machine Services. The owner was super efficient at fixing my vacuum and even offered tips for how to keep it running in top shape to avoid future issues. I will 100% bring my vacuum here for servicing when needed and will highly recommend Crown to clients & friends as well. read more

Got my receiver to the shop to fix a wonky selection knob - the knob where you select CD, Radio, Aux etc. The LED flickered and sometimes didn't light up at all. Anyway, they "repaired" it and were nice enough to drop it off at my building but it started flickering again a couple of months later. $200 wasted. read more

If you need a vacuum cleaner or one serviced, a new blender or part, vacuum cleaner bags, someone brought in a 55-year old stereo to be fixed or updated, sewing machines can be bought or repaired, even lamps can be repaired here. Explained the problem of plastic gears in the old Singer machines (before fixing further to make decorative stitching - that I don't even use -which would cost far more than the machine is worth.) I have a lot of old stuff and I'm happy that crown is around. This guys shop is really old school New York. There's a tiny path that leads to his check out/in counter and a small desk which looks like it's his work bench. The rugs are thread bare from being walked on. There is stuff tucked into every open space. It may not be everyone's aesthetic, but I like it and it reminds me of how many shops used to be and this guy knows his stuff! I've taken my vacuum cleaner there and it was serviced and came back working well! My sewing machine was brought there for repairs too. That took a little longer to fix but they found the part that was needed. And when it was finally time to put my vacuum cleaner out to pasture they recommend the Miele over the Dyson, (thank you for that). There are not many shops like this left here in NYC. In this disposable society folks are too quick to just throw something out and replace it rather than trying to fix what broke. And I know it's usually more to fix it than to replace it. But we should all consider it. They also have a great selection of vacuum bags & air filters. read more

The tip of an audio jack from one of my speakers got stuck in my subwoofer. So there were two problems, (1) tip of the audio jack was stuck in the subwoofer (2) my speaker needed a new audio jack It costs $40 (non-refundable) just to have them figure out whether or not they can fix the problem (although that $40 goes towards the repair). Ended up costing me a total of $70, which I think is ridiculously overpriced. They never called me back when they were finished, so I had to call them asking if they were done yet. So then I picked up my subwoofer and speakers and lugged it all the way back to my apartment just to find out that the speaker still wasn't working. Apparently they had put in a "faulty" audio jack. Are you f*cking kidding me? He ended up fixing it in the end (the only reason I'm not giving them 1 star), but I will probably never go back to that place again. read more

My external hard drive crashed with a LOT of data on it (~400GB). Crown told me it would cost at least $300-$400 to recover the data because the technician would have have to use a "clean room." I got a second opinion at Best Buy on 62nd St. They guy took it in back and checked it, was able to read the data. I was prepared to pay at least $169 for data "recovery" but since he could read the drive, he just charged me for transfer -- $99. When I told the Best Buy guy what Crown did he got really mad. "I hate people who take advantage of knowing more than other people about tech stuff," he said. I couldn't agree more. read more

I went to this place because of all the positive Yelp reviews. I had a very different experience. When I walked in, a very unpleasant man was arguing in the phone with an apparent customer. "I have no time to think of your problem." I thought that was odd, but I waited until he finished. I brought my vacuum cleaner to be repaired. "It will cost you $40 for the pleasure of my just looking at it." Okay, I thought, and handed over the cash. I told him what was wrong: the fan belt slides off the peg immediately and the brush doesn't turn. He said he understood and I left. Three weeks later, no word. I called to remind him that it was there. Two weeks later he calls to say its fixed and I should pick it up. The cost: an additional $89.50. More than the vacuum cleaner is worth, but I agreed. I took it home and began to vacuum, the exact same thing happened. I called to say so, reminding him about his own guarantee if 3 months of working service. When I brought it back an explained it's doing the same thing, he got angry. He said, "I don't know what wrong with that! I never saw a problem like that before!" But that was the reason I brought it in. He said he understood. This man did nothing but change and charge me for a new belt. He took $125.50 from me and did NOTHING to the vacuum cleaner. It turned in, so it was fixed. "Are you sure you didn't vacuum over a rough service?" I was sure. He has had the vacuum cleaner for over another three weeks and I heard nothing. I will call again, but I don't expect anything. This arrogant, nasty man took my money with no intention of fixing my vacuum cleaner. He was mean and rude to me. I paid him, I was pleasant, but I expect service if I pay for it. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this place. I thought because it was old and neighborly business it was good. NO. He's a nasty con man. And I regret walking in to that place. The anxiety this caused me is almost worth walking away. I don't want to deal with him again. Stay away. Buy a new vacuum. Don't get caught like I did. 12/22/17 I received the vacuum back. It still doesn't work. If the machine can't be fixed, just say so. Here's my story, take it for what is worth. My e-bay bought $46 vintage stereo turntable amp died and I brought it in and paid the $40 diagnostic fee. Few days later Crown called and said it needed a new power supply and the cost would be $190 (minus the diagnostic fee). I said no and bought the same amp on e-bay for $80. Picked up my original amp from Crown and brought it home thinking I might sell it on e-bay for parts. Decided to plug it in. IT WORKED PERFECTLY! AND STILL DOES. I now have two of the same amps. Rip off ! bought a vacuum from them about a year ago. They said there was a 1 year warranty on parts and 7 year warranty on motor. When I brought it in to check out , he asked for 39.50 cash ! Before even touching the machine or bothering to check if I still had the warranty for parts. Wouldn't plug it in or give me any idea on how what possibly could be wrong , until I paid then cash up front. These guys are not to be trusted I will never buy a vacuum or go there for service again. They said 90% of there customers pay cash. Sounds like something the IRS should look into read more

We just received our Dyson vacuum back from Crown. Upon delivery we were told he didn't have time for us to look at it. Ok fine no problem. We brought it in to find that it was still full of dirt, dust, and residue throughout the pieces, canister, and head of vacuum. We called to speak with Mark (owner or manager) who was probably the rudest manager I have ever spoken to. He legit wouldn't let us explain, didn't want to see the pictures, didn't care what we were upset about and proceeded to hang up on us. He said he didn't have time. They had this vacuum for a week an charged $175. Insanity for the condition it was returned in! I would bobber use them again or recommend them to anyone. Beware! read more

What a gem to stumble upon! My 1978 vintage Singer sewing machine had been acting up, and after several attempts to rig it myself, I knew it was time for a professional to take a look. They took a look, I paid a deposit and o week later I had my machine back with a repaired clutch, sounding much better, plus it would once again wind my bobbins! I've been using Crown Services for Miele vacuum repairs and service for years. That said, I bet it took me 2 or 3 years to walk into their store because of the visual impact when looking from the street through the windows. The place is not spanking clean (far to the contrary), is filled with machines in various stages of repair, and reminds me very much of an old time TV/Radio repair shop that fixed broken TVs, radios and yes, phonographs. Yes, those stores actually repaired broken equipment, just as Crown, and were totally disheveled, just as Crown. But if you want a piece of equipment repaired in a reasonable time, this is the place. And if you're looking for a new vacuum (I can vouch for Miele), their prices are very comparable (I mean very) to other shops. Ambience 1 star, service and knowledge 5 stars. Your choice. read more

I have used Crown before, didn't have great experience, but was willing to try again. Big mistake! I purchased a Miele Vacuum from them several years ago and have been replacing filters as needed. I recently required a part that connected the vacuum to the bag, which they were out of, so they opened a used and dirty, vacuum and removed the needed part, took it to the sink to wash off the dirt, and handed it to me wet. I said that at least I wold save a few dollars since it was a used part and was told,'no, you will pay full price'. When I objected, I was told essentially, to "take it or leave it!" Because my housekeeper was waiting for it, I paid full price for this used and dirty part, and left. I later called Miele and was directed to another shop in my neighborhood for future purchases and maintenance. Not only will I not use Crown again, but I strongly recommend against them. read more

I brought my decades-old Electrolux vacuum to be fixed at this amazing store. It cost $40 cash for an estimate. I left it there, and they gave me a call to say they could fix it and it needed a cleaning badly (who knew?) and the entire thing would cost $135 (less the deposit) Pricey? I'm not sure, but all I know is I got it back and it works like a new machine. It's twice as powerful as before, and the faulty on-off switch is fixed. For a machine that would cost close to $700 to replace, this was money well spent. These kinds of stores proliferated on the UWS years ago, and now most of them are gone. Thank goodness Crown is still around. Caveat Emptor: all repairs are cash only! (but are guaranteed for at least a month, maybe more). read more
