I brought in my Pfaff sewing machine which had died on me. I really thought it was beyond repair because I had been using it daily for 10 years. I called Crown and Mark said, "bring it in. Have just dropped Kenmore vacuum off for repairs. Crown is always helpful -- we've gone to them before for typewriter repairs, vacuum repairs, to buy vacuum bags, to use their notary -- but one thing to note: Although Yelp says that they take credit cards -- and they do -- they only do so for SALES. For repairs, you must pay CASH. Found this out today when they wanted $40 down toward the repair and didn't have cash on me. So worth remembering... read more

I've dealt with Crown Services for many years and have been more than happy with their service. They are an old time shop with an old time work ethic. They've advised, repaired, and extended courtesies on a regular basis. I just wanted to let my neighborhood know these are folks who can be trusted to do good work, alert you to the possible problems and consult as to solutions. Their work is guaranteed for 90 days and they truly stand behind that guarantee. I have a 50 yr old vacuum cleaner that they have kept in great performance with their minor repairs. I do not mean to discredit anyone's personal experience in any way, but I, for several years, have always found Crown Services to provide excellent service. In the past, they have fixed several of my appliances (vacuum cleaner, computer, etc.).They are friendly, honest, considerate, and they can fix just about anything. Rip off don't go here!!!! You need to give a 39.50 CASH ONLY deposit to drop it off that goes to towards the total. I was first told it could be finished that same day (Saturday) or Monday MORNING at the latest, I called at 6ish at night on Monday because they didn't call me and they said it wasn't ready and then told me a price that it would be when I came to pick it up. Wasn't ready until Tuesday night and they called me half an hour or so before they closed... Not enough time to even get there so I had to wait till Wednesday (today) after work to pick it up! Then... They told me that tax wasn't included in the "total" they gave me before even though it's a cash transaction and when you say total that should include tax... In total paid $98 (they wanted to charge $111, I could've bought a new stinking sewing machine) to get my sewing machine fixed.... He tried to rip me off again and say that the light bulb wasn't included in the total either and that I had to pay $4 extra on top of the 98. Such bull crap.... It was a simple fix... Do not go here take your services to another more reliable place you'll be so much happier if you do.... The one star is because it is fixed but for the price I am extremely disappointed. read more

A gem of a place. Lovely service. Exceptional work. Results above & beyond my expectations--in addition to the repair, they cleaned both the inside and outside of my vacuum--it looked new! In this sometimes brusque world, it was refreshing to find people not harried, not rushed, who patiently explained beforehand what might be needed and what the cost might be--and also, upon return of item, explained little intricacies of caring for it going forward, things I didn't know. The people that run this shop have no idea what they are selling you and are short to deal with. They charge 20$ just to look at your vacuum and the service is not timely. I ended up spending 50$ for not even store credit on a vacuum that didn't work. The store is also disorganized and untidy. read more

Have previously bought vacuum bags recommended by staff at Crown with no problems. However, went recently to purchase a new filter for our vacuum and was told that we didn't need anything as fancy as the (old, used) filter we brought in -- that Crown uses a "very good quality" filter material for everything. The staff member cut a piece from a sheet of filter material, stuck it in a paper bag, handed it over, and then quoted the price as $6.98. Got home, removed it from the bag, and discovered it's a piece of thin blue foam about the size of a sheet of paper, cut raggedly. It does not appear to be in any way different from the kind of foam that is used in packaging that you can buy at a hardware or stationery store. Recommend examining your purchases before you leave the store if it's not a packaged product. read more

I've been going to this place for years. It's a real gem and also one of the few Mom & Pop (or in this case Pop & Son!) places left in the 'hood. Their prices are fair and they can repair almost any appliance. For example, the electronic metronome (you'll agree this is an odd item!!) given to me by my Mother broke and they figured out the mechanism and repaired it. In these difficult financial times, it's comforting to know that, when when something breaks, we often don't have to spend the $$$ to buy a new one. My stereo stopped working. Everyone said just throw it away and buy a new one. It will cost the same to repair it. But I really like my stereo. It is only 8 years old. I couldn't find a new one I liked better. Besides I try to live as "green" as possible and sending it to the landfill didn't seem right. I stopped by Crown. True there is a diagnostic fee. Pretty standard in the repair world I think. They fixed it (it took a couple of weeks, I had to call to check in a few times.) Two weeks later it stopped working again. They honored their 90 day warranty and fixed it right the second time. It appears to be a father - son operation. Not cheap but 30% cheaper than a replacement would have been and now several months later it is still working like new. I'm not sure how they survive but I hope they will despite increasing turnover on this stretch of Broadway. read more

I want to like this place as it is very convenient and I appreciate small family businesses however I have always felt that they were somewhat a ripoff and now I'm sure. Their policy is a $20 nonrefundable fee for an estimate on repair. I took in a very new Kitchenaid standing mixer where I had burned the cord and needed it replaced. They told me that the estimate was $20 and I said that I wanted a ballpark sense of what it would cost before I invested $20 to find out that it was too expensive to do. They explained how much time it would take the mechanic to totally disassemble the machine in order to figure out what was involved in the repair and when I said I really didn't want to spend more than about $30 or $40 for the repair they told me that I might as well take it home which I did. I then looked online for another repair shop. I came upon a web video that showed exactly how one could replace the cord at home. Before I ordered the cord (for $11.25 from another site) I followed the directions to remove the old cord to see if it was really as simple as they said. I am not a mechanic and don't have all the right tools but managed to remove the old cord and replace the back (while I wait to receive the cord) in less than 7 minutes. I realize that a mechanics time costs money but any repair shop should have known that removing the back would let them know exactly what was involved in about a minute and that the repair would have to take less than 15 minutes (and probably way less) for someone experienced. I hate to have to say this but I'm never going back (and I wonder about how much I overpaid for work I've had them do in the past.) Well it is two days later and I received the replacement cord already and it has taken me about another 5 minutes to replace it following the instructions in the web video. I am now thoroughly convinced that Crown is preying on the public's ignorance of machinery....By the way, the mixer works perfectly!! read more

I have an old Singer "Redeye" sewing machine from 1921 that stopped functioning properly a day before a huge sewing job was due. I had to make six 10 foot by 10 foot basketball hoop "drapes", tablecloths, and curtains for a gymnasium. I called Crown and Mark told me to bring the machine in immediately. I took it in; told Mark that I needed a new belt, and I had to have the machine back in an hour. He examined the machine and said that the belt was fine, but he would have the technician give the machine a more thorough examination and call me to let me know what the problem is. I got a call in 30 minutes and was told that the machine needed cleaning, maintenance, oiling, a few adjustments and that I could pick the machine up in an hour and a half. I picked up the machine, paid what I thought was a fair price and the machine worked like a wiz, a brand new machine! I finished the job on time and took the machine back a couple of days later to deal with a bobbin issue. This time, George examined the machine and gave me tips and insights on how to more properly operate and care for a machine that I have had for more than 40 years. I am so fortunate to have such knowledgeable and accommodating repair people like Mark and George in my neighborhood. I highly recommend this repair shop. Dara H. read more

This is a fantastic repair place. They are honest, quick, friendly and above all, their work is excellent. On Monday, my old (very) Bernina sewing machine stopped working. I took it in and had it back in perfect working order within 48 hours. Happy to say that I brought in my Hoover self-propelled vacuum in very challenged condition. One part needed ordering, but all 3 issues were resolved within about a week, and the cost was about a third of a new one. Gets my vote. read more

Dropped off my old stereo receiver for repair, they diagnosed the problem and fixed it. But when I hooked it up, it still wasn't working properly. After a very thorough examination, which usually takes no more than a few days, they tell you exactly what the problem is. I adore Crown Sewing! I've been taking my broken (but still loved) appliances here for years. Recently I brought my mother's old VCR in for repair. My mother loves her VCR and just isn't ready to move over to DVDs or BlueRay. They were able to fix the VCR which is astonishing because that thing is OLD! You want a pretty, neat shop with bright lighting and high-tech trappings? Don't come here. If you want your poor, old, broken appliances fixed so they work like new, this is the place. Most recently they took apart my ancient, non-operative sewing machine, diagnosed the problem, found the parts and did the repair in the time promised. Even cleaned it and gave the fancy stitches a test run, leaving the test fabric for me to check. They have also repaired vacuum cleaners and other small appliances for me over the years This is a messy, crowded father-son operation -- it looks like a store from the good old days when people actually got stuff fixed instead of throwing it away and buying new stuff. They are not masters of public relations, but they know their business, they have the parts and they add years to the life of your beloved old stereos, sewing machines, electronics and small appliances. Can't really comment on the prices, but they seem all right for the skilled work involved. $125 to overhaul a sewing machine that was not working at all and cost $500 twenty years ago -- seems reasonable. read more

I am disappointed in the service and treatment I received when I brought in my vacuum cleaner for repair. After paying $32 cash for investigation of why the hose wouldn't stay in the canister I was called and told that an inside part had been taped on and needed to be replaced to the tune of $89. I reminded the father in this father and son shop that I had bought this Miele vac from him as a reconditioned machine, he said "we don't sell machines with taped parts" No one in my family or the housekeeper taped parts in this machine. When I picked up the machine today, the son opened the machine, removed the tape and tossed the part on the floor saying "You'd be surprised what cleaning ladies will do" As I left the shop the father said"don't you want us to fix the machine?" After the rude behavior and shifty practices I won't be returning. This is disappointing because it's hard to find a repair shop in this neighborhood. What's their problem? read more
