It's not a gimmick if they have good food…read more Handsome Dan's has been on my list to try for months, but I've been on a keto diet most of the time, so a bunch of restaurants have been put on a "someday" list. Last week I was on a break from keto, and my husband read my mind. He took me here as the first stop on a rainy Friday night date. I know they have good sandwiches, but they also have their "bait shop" schtick. They're not near any significant fishing spots, and I didn't see any evidence of bait, but whatever. Their sandwiches are good, so they can get away with it. While I ate my sandwich on the patio, we discussed the novelty nature of many Austin businesses, and which ones can hold up and which ones are pure hype. I ordered the Club sandwich. It's not a true triple-decker club, but it was the sandwich that had the best variety of fillings in my opinion. Everything you'd expect in a classic club, but easier to eat because it wasn't stacked absurdly tall like other clubs. The sourdough bread was very crispy, and the meats, cheese, and vegetables worked well inside. On the side I got potato salad which I like more than their other option, which was chips, but the potato salad wasn't anything special. Their patio was the perfect spot to enjoy a rainstorm. They have some glider chairs off to the side that are good for lounging on, but when it really started to rain we moved in to the center of the patio. I'm glad I got a chance to try Handsome Dan's. I doubt I'll be back anytime soon because huge sandwiches like this need to be an occasional treat for me, but if you're in the Springdale area looking for a satisfying meal, this is it!

Handsome Dans was on our list because of all the online and social media hype. It's tucked away in…read morethe back next to Stargazer in a brewery/ warehouse off Springdale and Airport area. The parking is shared and gets packed in the evening or you have to pay to park if you are unable to find anything in the lot or on the street. Handsome Dans has a sign directing you to the back where they are located. The vibe is true to a bait shop/diner it's casual with a rustic feel, they have a large covered patio adjacent to Stargazer bar. I highly suggest sitting outside if possible because the inside does get a bit claustrophobic and smokey when it's packed and they are smashing paninis on the press with no proper kitchen overhead vents. The type of greasy smoke you get when you are making super buttery sandwiches on a hot press. The sandwiches are ok but not something I would go out of my way to have ,our kids liked the hotdogs and Frito pies which were also kind of "upper class" gas station quality. Most of the stuff here is food that probably tastes way better after drinking several beers. It's like any normal sandwich you could make at home and toss in a panini press to be honest. Really good beers on tap and friendly staff who seemed to disappear to the back quite a bit and came back confused. They didn't know if they had already given me my food because I was ordering and paying for extra food after more people in our party arrived. They literally saw my food I already had on the table from my previous order and thought they gave me double of what I ordered hahaha. I can't make a judgment because I have no clue what they kept dispersing to the back for but can just say the confusion was real, LOL. All together if I had to come back it be because someone I knew wanted to try it. Otherwise for me it's a one and done. I got the pictures I stood next to a sign ,I had the Signiture sandwiches, now I'm moving on. I can say I've been there done that. I'm guessing that a college crowd or just being a single person who just wants to be amongst people that this is the type of lowkey place to go if you're not into the typical Longhorn hangouts. You stop in ,have some beers, eat a low budget ingredient expensive panini sandwich and chill till you have to call yourself a Waymo cause the beer is good and strong.

This is both those visits together…read more Holiday has hopped on the girl dinner/adult happy meal trend (fine by me) with their Wednesday adult happy meal. It's a smashburger and fries with a choice of either a mini cosmo or a mini beer type cocktail for $15. What was good: The burger and fries were good, I like the price point, and this runs ALL night- not just happy hour. Very much appreciate that. What could be better: The bun is dry- not a lot of toppings on the smash burger and the concept of a 1.5 ounce drink is weird. Just make it a normal cocktail and charge $20. We also came on Sunday for the half priced martini day. This just can't be beat- especially because I had a total of 3 dirty martinis across those two visits and they were delicious every time. So paying $7 for a good martini is INSANE in this city. I ordered their normal double wagyu smash burger with fries for $21- definitely was bigger (and i dont just mean bc of two patties) and better dressed than the adult happy meal but those buns are just not it for me. I love the huge front and back patio, service was good. Will be back for both of these specials.

I loved Holiday so much that I went twice in one day lol…read more My friend and I walked in on a Thursday night and got seated inside. Before 6pm they do half off their frozen martini and fries. My friend got the frozen and fries so I tried some. The fries were AMAZING!! I will say for an $8 fry it better be good lol. The seasoning, texture, and the sauce were perfect. I ordered the chicken schnitzel and spiced appletini. The schnitzel was really good and big. It came with a gribiche (cold egg sauce) and small salad with anchovies which was unique and flavorful. The martini was delicious too. I hate a martini that's too sweet or too strong. This was perfect. Afterwards, my friend and I went somewhere else, and at the end of the night, we came back to Holiday for a night cap brewski. I ordered a Coors. This time we sat outside in the back patio and the weather was perfect. The atmosphere is beautiful and the workers felt hospitable. The parking lot is not that big but I got lucky and found a spot.

My list of places to try in Austin is a never-ending backlog. About a year ago, I had a friend…read morerecommend Lil' Easy for dinner. Since it was this new and poppin' restaurant on East Cesar Chavez from the team behind De Nada, we had over an hour wait that we didn't take up. Its vibe intrigued me, and I think Cajun food is top five like Tatum with a cut. I decided to prepare only slightly this time. While getting dinner with a friend, we were discussing places when I suggested Lil' Easy. I threw a reservation down for an hour later at one of their numerous dining options. Upon arrival, parking at that little strip of restaurants on East Cesar Chavez is a bit treacherous. If you're not afraid of getting your steps in at 6 pm on a Friday, don't sweat it. Anyone else, good luck. There are a lot of different seating arrangements at Lil' Easy: the true outdoor patio with fans and umbrellas, the climate-controlled outdoor space that still brings the sun while still pumping A/C, and the traditional indoor space. Plenty of seating. The entire place was decorated with Mardi Gras beads and colors. Off the rip, we had to set the tone: I ordered a Pimm's Cup while my friend got some secret frozen swirl. We had to throw down an order of the Crawfish Queso as well. The food and drinks were served so quickly, we questioned if it was ours. The queso was De Nada's signature queso with Crawfish Étouffée mixed in. There are no tortilla chips on the side, but instead toasted bread. It's kinda like a DIY Crostini. The crawfish's flavor is a unique and savory balance to the cheesiness of the queso. Very delightful. We crushed it. My friend wanted to go wild. Another appetizer?? Their Shrimp Cocktail was thrown down immediately after ordering. The shrimp was great, but those house pickles were sneakily one of the best things they served us. Living the high life. Speaking of that, I ordered a High Life Pony as we made our main orders: a Fried Catfish Po'Boy and Fried Oyster Po'Boy. Both cut down the middle so we could have a little this, a little that. I think the bread, the catfish and the oysters, and the fries served alongside it were all incredible. My only issue was that the catfish po'boy had horseradish in it. That is a me issue, and I don't know why I can't stand horseradish. I don't know if it was hiding in their coleslaw or their rémoulade, but something was horseradish-y! I'd get the oyster po'boy again and again though! We closed the night with me being fun as I ordered their Frozen Espresso Martini with sprinkles and whipped cream because some other lady sitting nearby had that, and I WANTED TO BE FUN TOO. My friend got herself the seasonal nonalcoholic Arnold Palmer that was spiked with some Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka. Hers was great, but mine was basically a milkshake. I looked like a joyous kid with my drink. I was so very happy. They do give you lids for your drinks if you want to take them with you, but I planned to finish mine then and there. The gimme cups are also a nice touch and have their cute alligator mascot on them. Throughout the night, we could not believe how fast the service was at getting our meals and our drinks to us. Our waitress was absolutely on point the entire time we were there, constantly checking in on us and being extremely friendly and helpful in making sure we chose the right things and had a good meal ahead of us. Lil' Easy is casual, fun, and absolutely delicious. They have some of the best frozens in Austin, and their food is some of the best seafood and Cajun food I've had in Austin, hands down. Get over here. RIYL: crawfish and cocktails

When we arrived, we sat outside since it was such a nice day. There was plenty of seating and it was a Sunday where they were having a crawfish boil. The service was nice. The waitress is very helpful and nice. I came here because I kept hearing good things about the crawfish. I have to say the crawfish was OK. There is nothing amazing about it, but it was good. I will say the corn and the onion were beyond spicy, but that was a nice kick. We also got the oysters. I have to say that the oysters were delicious so I give them that. The gumball was definitely missing a lot of flavor. It was it that good. The deviled eggs were mediocre and nothing special to them. We also got a meat. Patty empanada kind of deal and that was OK. It was a little overly greasy. And for dessert, we got the banana rum cake, which I have to say was nice but again nothing special. As for drinks, they had quite a variation. One of us got the espresso martini, which was OK. It was too sweet for my taste. And then I got the spritz which was nice. It's very hard to mess up a spritz. Not sure I would've come back just because the food was OK if I did come back, it would be for the oysters cause I do say that was really good for them.

I went to Whisler's and had one of the worst bar experiences I've ever had…read more I had one drink. I was completely sober for all intents and purposes. The bartender claimed I was drunk and cut me off anyway. I was at the bar talking to a girl while waiting to get a drink (the wait was long because the service is very slow, despite the bar not being very busy at all). She was clearly into me, and the bartender kept jumping in trying to talk to her too (instead of doing his job making drinks). He was doing all sorts of things to try and flirt with her and make her laugh: pulling out and showing her buckets of pre mixed cocktails, running and sliding under the bar, etc. She was engaging with both of us , and right in the middle of that, I get cut off out of nowhere. No explanation other than claiming I looked drunk, which I very clearly wasn't. It felt very clear what was going on--he wanted me out of the way. I left and asked the bouncer on my way out if I seemed drunk. This was literally two minutes later. He said no, not at all, and asked me why I would even ask that. I then told him exactly what happened and asked him to let the owner or whoever was in charge know about this extremely unprofessional conduct so they can discipline the bartender. His response was that the bartender has discretion to cut anyone off, and let me know the bartender is supposedly married so he couldn't have been flirting with any of the customers. Well, sounds like his logic is flawed--not only COULD he flirt with his customers, he WAS, and was therefore cheating. I hope his wife finds out. This is perfectly representative of Austin customer service lately and not normal in other places. I was in Tampa for an entire month earlier this year and this would've been unthinkable there. I'm not coming back.
