The sandwiches are good and come with a lot of meat. I had the brisket sandwich the first time and "The Boss" the second time. Both times the spicy bbq sauce was the star of the show. It is some of the best bbq sauce in Springfield. The fries were a little too oily/greasy for me but the rest is a pretty solid meal. It is kinda nice to have the smoke of the bbq in the building. While the owner was extremely nice; everything else that was "BBQ" wasn't. Also good luck on finding a table that's stable in this place! I haven't been here for years. I hate giving local businesses a bad review but this guy is just behind in the BBQ game. I'm lucky I didn't order BBQ I got the catfish; which was pretty good I must say, but it's not a fish place it's a BBQ place. My wife and child weren't so lucky, my kid with her smoked turkey sandwich and my wife with a sample platter.. My sides, slaw and potato salad definitely was store bought. My wife's pit beans were gross; a combination of beans and his signature sauce which taste like vinegar and catsup my kids fries were soggy and greasy. Now for the "BBQ meat" I didn't taste an ounce of smoke on any of the meat; from my kids turkey to the brisket and ham on my wife's plate. It seriously looked like deli meat that was sliced and when I say dry I mean "jerky dry!" If you live close and want some catfish and maybe some fried okra you could hit here, but as for BBQ absolutely not. We have always enjoyed crosstown, we even drive further to get it. Tonight we were very disappointed with the quality of the food. At the price of $48 (without tip) for two meals, that's not a mistake we can make again. The burnt ends are not brisket, it's dry chunks of roast. They just put normal sandwich bread in there UNTOASTED. I guess Bubus is the better choice now, at least I know their burnt ends are melt in you're mouth amazing . read more

I will start by saying that I have never been to Crosstown BBQ. hahaha. BUT! It is now on my list of places to check out. I moved here from NYC not too long ago and am still discovering the Springfield "Gems" I received a ham as a gift for Christmas from my employer and I was VERY impressed. So much so, that I could not wait to get back to work to find out where it came from. Crosstown BBQ Typically, I'm not a huge ham person, don't hate it and I'll eat it, but it's not something I crave. (I'm going to change that to past tense. "Craved") Hands down, no exaggeration, this ham was the best I've had. I am pretty sure because of this experience, I will now crave ham. If nobody gave you a ham for Christmas, or you have never tried ham from Crosstown, please do yourself a favor and treat yourself, you will not be sorry. ;-) read more

Burnt ends were dried, and tasted old. The sides were presented in little plastic containers, barely enough as side dishes. The service was just okay, not friendly server. The ambiance was very old and passé, a broken loose table top. Lots of friends + associates raved about this place about the great barbecue meats, which was contradictory on the day I ordered a very overpriced meal that was very disappointing ! I don't mind paying for a expensive meal if it was delicious, the barbecue meat moist & succulent with substantial portions of 2 sides. Really enjoyed my first visit to Crosstown. My favorite part was Steve's warm welcome and hospitality. I watched him greet customer and customer by name, asking them about their friends and families. When the crowd slowed down, he sat down next to me, shook my hand, and asked about my trips/travels. Steve told me quite a bit about how the restaurant started, and the decades of service by his family in the Springfield community (see attached photos). Our conversation alone made the trip worth it for me! The food was great and fairly priced. I would highly recommend the Big Papa (~$15), which comes with a heaping of beef and pork options and two sides of your choice. As someone who cares a lot about quantity in addition to quality, I thought everything I tried was on par with the best I've had in the city. The ribs were probably the best pieces on my plate, and I'm a sucker for crispy okra! The only thing that may turn a few folks away is the age of the restaurant. It's a bit worn and seems to be in need of a renovation. Steve mentioned that he's planning some renovations, and as a history buff, he plans to add cultural/historical prints to sit alongside how the place has changed over the years. No thrills, not fancy but good food dive BBQ place. They get a lot of regulars and all seemed to be bring new people with them. If you are willing to take friends to a place that the staff knows you its probably a good place. The cook / possibly owner was greeting everyone and even came out to talk. - Friendly staff. My general rule when hunting for place to eat in a new area is to look where city vehicles are at. If city employees eat there its probably pretty good. I say this as a former public employee, that had nothing better to do or at least not more important than find the best lunch stops. read more

I love BBQ and have tried several BBQ joints in Springfield. When my family and I got out of our car we could smell the smoke from the pit, and we could tell that the meat was smoked on-site. When we walked inside, we were greeted by a lovely woman who told us to sit wherever we wanted. After a couple of minutes she took our drink order and then our food order. I ordered the PaPa meal which consisted of, Fall off the bone ribs, a hot link, and brisket. The ribs did fall of the bones, the hot link had a nice kick to it, and the brisket was very well seasoned and needed no sauce. The fried okra I got as a side was very tasty, but the BBQ beans were a little to sweet for my liking. Overall this lil BBQ joint was worth the trip and the money. I have never submitted a restaurant review but felt compelled to share our experience. We had a regular and a large sandwich special with fries. The fries were burned, cold and soggy. The worst fries I ever had. They tasted like they were leftover from the lunch rush. The barbecue was average at best. The large sandwich was smashed between three slices of soggy white bread. Like a small town barbecue experience out of the movies! After a long morning of travel from Texas to watch Drury basketball all weekend, we were ready to grub, and grub we did. We were immediately greeted by Steve, the jovial owner, who joined us for some friendly conversation while we perused the menu. This man has all sorts of pride for his food, as he couldn't recommend one outstanding thing because "it's all good!" For me, the barbecue standard is determined by the trifecta: brisket, ribs, and sweet tea. Naturally, I love me some homemade sides, but any purist will tell you that noteworthy sides are just an added bonus, right? Well, they've got that bonus too in their secret recipe beans - thick, sweet like brown sugar, and tangy. I could've eaten only those and been happy. The Four Rib dinner plate is served with a generous drizzle of their sauce (spicy for me, but they have a mild version). You never know when you might get bamboozled with a measly portion of crappy ribs, so I was thrilled to see thick-cut, juicy, and meaty ribs hit my table. A bite of brisket from my boyfriend's sandwich and it was affirmed that Steve knows a thing or two about smoking meat. It's an unassuming spot, with a hidden back parking lot, paper plates, newspaper clippings and school flags on the wall, and seating for about 40 people. I wanted to try some Missouri Barbeque and my Daughter found Crosstown Barbeque, so we came and ate some of the Best Barbeque Ribs, Beans,Potato Salad, Coleslaw,Smoked Ham and Beef Brisket in years! This locally owned BBQ joint has been here since 1970 and the founders son still works in the kitchen! If you want good authentic Missouri BBQ go to Crosstown BBQ. The waitress poured tea from an old mustard container which didn't bother me, but my wife didn't like it. Also, the whole place filled with smoke every time they opened the pit. I've been to hundreds of BBQ places in America during my lifetime of almost 60 years and I am going to rank Crosstown Barbecue in a neck and neck tie with the Salt Lick in Driftwood, TX and that's saying a lot! During my visit, I observed that the service was amazing as owner Steve Williams and his team were hospitable and attentive to the customers. My wife and I were in our way back to California and I searched YouTube for the best barbecue along the way. I discovered Crosstown through my research and I am glad that I did! The Ribs, Brisket, and Pork were out of this world Pit Master excellent! I guarantee that if Crosstown was in any part of Texas that it would be getting the notoriety that Franklin's in Austin receives. I used to be quite in love with this barbecue place--until I found better ones. The people are very friendly, and it has a great atmosphere. The story behind it is kind of fascinating, too--the founder was a black dump truck driver who struggled with segregation when he founded the place, and actually had to sleep in the restaurant at the beginning because he couldn't find any housing in Springfield. But friendliness, atmosphere, and stories don't fill your belly. The barbecue is decent, but only decent. Their ribs are all right, but their sandwich meat is a lot drier than it ought to be. For better barbecue, head south to St. George's, west to Pappy's, or east to the Rib Shack. read more

Yeah, my first 4 star rating EVER. This is a solid place. Yeah, you're eating on paper plates and wiping your mouth with paper towels, but since when is BBQ fancy? Everything about this place stands out as BBQ. Hell, the toothless cook really put things in motion for me: if she can eat it, then it must be good. Price is skewed. It is too expensive. In actuality, the price is only what it supposed to be because it is a mom-and-pop shop. Ketchup-based sauce. Spicy. I'm at a loss for words right now. I'm actually drooling. The only reason this gets a 4 instead of a 5 is because I'm not an idiot. BBQ can never earn a perfect 5 because that would mean that BBQ can be narrowed down to a science rather than a fine art.
