Barbell 4:13 has all the cardio equipment and machines a new gym goes needs but also has a full row of monolifts and competition benches and accessories like bands and chains for a competitive athlete. Chalk is not only allowed but provided and the equipment is all top-notch. The owner, Matt, took time to welcome me to the gym and show me around, and all of the regulars here have been really friendly. I like being able to jump in with the groups training here but it'd also be a great place to get a workout in and not be bothered. Definitely worth checking out and it's been worth the 30 minute drive down for me to train here.

After hours and hours of work and eating very healthily, I just wasn't seeing the results I wanted. I was considering hiring a personal trainer at my (old) gym but hesitated because they were all rather unseemly and I didn't want to have to spend much one-on-one time with any of them. Not when they seemed to think that my face was about 9 inches south of where it actually was whenever I talked to them. Family members had been talking up CrossFit for years and it had always fallen on deaf ears. "Blah blah blah ..CrossFit" I was completely turned off by just the thought. I had read plenty of people's anti-crossfit blogs and was quick to say "See, CrossFit is just a bad fad." Then there was the expense. But after looking at what I would be paying to hire one of those meathead trainers vs paying for a month's membership for CrossFit, it was actually considerably cheaper ($150/mo). What was the harm in trying? It can be hard to find if you don't know where you are going. 630 is located in the same large business complex as DeEtta's Bakery, but in one of the industrial buildings in back. Behind Naperville North HS's baseball field. I walked into this "box" at 630 and from the moment I stepped foot, I knew I'd never return to a standard gym again. No meatheads walking around pumping in front of mirrors. There were no women wearing makeup and jewelry, walking on treadmills while they watched TV and yacked on the phone(major, major pet-peeve). In fact, there were no treadmills at all. No TVs. No mirrors. No glitz. Just a few row machines, bar bells, pull-up bars, ropes, kettle bells, jump ropes etc... no fancy equipment. It felt like a nearly empty room comparatively. It wasn't empty though; it just lacked distractions. The people are supportive. They cheer you on. Give you high fives. Push you to do more. And they notice when you're not there. It's a community. The first week, I was doing things I'd never done before at standard gyms. And every day, there was a butt kicking workout (WOD) planned out for me. I just show up and do it. People are at all levels. From college age kids to retired individuals. It's literally for everyone. I'd always read stories about people trying to lift too much and then getting injured doing CrossFit. It was always one of the negatives I clung to before trying CF myself. That was not my experience here. They watch your form. Sometimes I'm told to increase my weights but sometimes I'm told my form is off because it's too heavy and to drop to a lower weight. Nobody wants anybody to get injured; nobody is being irresponsible with my health and wellbeing, but ultimately that is up to the participant. I love that there's no yearly contract to sign. No sign up fees. It's just your flat monthly charge. Once you sign up with them, you can pay online or make adjustments to your account. CrossFit ruined me from ever joining a regular gym ever again. I honestly find them to be completely repulsive now. I still keep a membership at a regular one, in case I want to have a run and the Chicago weather doesn't welcome it. I'll use an occasional treadmill, but walking into the standard gym always gives me an immediate reminder for why I'll never again be that girl who goes to spin classes, only working the same few muscles. It's all so mind-numbingly boring to me now. Boring, yet distracting. I don't miss the women in the locker room putting on make-up and perfume *before* they head out to the floor to pretend they are going to workout. Or people who are more concerned with how they look while they exercise rather than how they're performing. I don't miss working out with TVs surrounding me. And I certainly don't miss the spin classes where I had to listen to Nickelback!! Joining CrossFit 630, was the best decision I ever made.

Corey has a monster 800+ deadlift and has played football at a high level and knows what it takes to get athletes to perform better. Kristen Miceli has had 4 kids, (please don't kill me) somewhere over 40, and walks around all day with abs and looking great. Definitely someone who knows how to help a woman look and feel better. I hate when I go to a gym and can only tell who the trainers are because they have a polo on that says "trainer".... these guys actually know what they are doing and live it themselves. Way better than the overpriced and under-performing corporate gym people.

Anyway, I am a former athlete and by former I mean I am now a dad of two that found myself stuck in the same routine of running and light lifting. Light lifting of beer and food that is. I needed something new and motivating and found myself on groupon. I didn't want to join a cross fit (not my style) and didn't trust the large group fitness classes at the huge corporate giants (xsport type) just looking to get your money. So I thought I would give this place a try. After all, it was only 200$ to start for 3x a week for the first 2 months. Jump on Groupon now if it still there and if not I promise whatever you pay will be better than a gym membership. Onto my experience so far. The first week I found out just how bad my form was and how much of a difference it makes on your core and body when you do lifts and exercises correctly. It was a motivating atmosphere without the pressure of a competitive environment where you are injuring yourself. All I care about now is my form and my results which is why I knew after day one I have found my go to place. Chris who runs my class adapts to each individual and doesn't let you cheat anything. With my gym membership I would of stopped after a certain set or taken an extra rest. Having the motivation of Chris pushing you makes you push harder. Pro Force has trainers and an owner that care about each individual and their outcomes. I have been in the xsport classes that the instructor spent more time looking in the mirror at his arms rather than my form. Anyway, I am only 3 weeks in but feel great and am improving. The class consist of many different exercises that work too many muscles to name. Some I didn't know existed. Trust me I feel it today :). There are many different options for classes and individuals of all levels. However The best part about this is knowing my dollar is going to a family of a gym that is locally owned. The owner also invests time and energy back into my community. I only wish this place existed when I was an athlete as most of us at my age relied on pure athletic ability. Bonus note is they train numerous professional athletes. Knowing these pro athletes train with pro force means it is definitely good enough for me. I have been going here for 3 years - prior to that I worked out on my own, I swam, ran did a little of the old P90X. I wasn't in bad shape - but I wasn't in great shape either. I would work out "hard" for a month then lose interest for a month or two then start it up again. I started at ProForce in my late 40s - when my age was starting to really catch up with me - I was waking up with back aches and was sore after yard work and now - I'm almost 50 now and I am in the best shape I have ever been. There are three reasons to go to ProForce 1) Chris is a fantastic trainer - and he along with his staff - really know what they are doing. I had no idea that I was doing most of the exercises wrong or with very poor form. The way I was doing the exercise really wasn't working the muscle groups in the right way (or worse working the wrong groups) and I was suffering because of it. It's really like working out with a personal trainer every day! They watch your form and when it breaks down they correct it - so you don't hurt yourself. They also get you to think about which muscles should be working for a given exercise to really help you focus. They also really work on flexibility and movement - something I had never even considered. Also they treat you like a professional athlete - and sometimes you are working out next to people that were or are professional athletes - which is really cool. At the beginning focus on form - that's the best advice I can give anyone starting here. 2) Variety. Workouts are varied and we rarely do the same workout twice - over three years. This has kept me mentally engaged and interested. Sometimes you work with weights and sometimes it is body weight and they do a lot of good cardio as well. 3) The competition and people in the classes. I enjoy their company - we laugh, we work (hard) and we motivate each other - sometimes you don't feel like working out hard - everyone has those days - but when you are working out with a group - particularly this group - you will find yourself working harder. It doesn't matter what shape you are in right now - there is someone else at your level - to push you and to work with every day.
