If you're reading this - just do it. I was in the same place as you, wondering if it would be intimidating, scary etc. The first day I went, Coach Joe made sure to ask if I had any injuries and started me in a place where I could work on my form safely and continue to improve my strength and health. It's almost been a year now and it's the best decision I've made in a very long time. I've truly seen how strong I am, and even when I doubt myself, the team here believes in me and it's very powerful. I see and feel the changes. Plus, the hours are extremely accommodating to almost anyone's schedule - no excuses. I have too many nice things to about CrossFit Shokunin say so I've been finding the time to write it down. It's taken me too long to find the time but Joe deserves it so I'm putting him first before my homework I have been to 4 CrossFit gyms in the 7 years I've done CrossFit. I went to some in Yuma, Oceanside, Chandler and now Mesa. CrossFit Shokunin has been my favorite in the last 7 years. It took me a minute to figure Joe out. He's one of a kind. He's strict, sassy and talented everything you want from a coach and everything you need to be a better athlete. He's also patient, caring and encouraging, everything you need to be a well rounded person and to keep your motivation. In the 7 years I have been doing CrossFit, this year, something is different. I have finally seen consistent progress in myself. Having an autoimmune disease. I thought I just wasn't meant for CrossFit. Year after year, I kept going and kept being consistent. But I wasn't getting better. Some of that was because of my autoimmune disorder and although it still affects me today. I have noticed a huge change in my physical and mental health. I have had more progress in the last year than I have in the 6 previous years I've done CrossFit. This is because of the dedicated coaches at CrossFit Shokunin. This is because Joe is inspiring. His motivation keeps me motivated. All the members are so kind and inclusive. Previous CrossFits I have been to were cliquey and intimidating. Yet I still continued to go but was scared to grow with the fear of looking dumb. Now, I look dumb all the time and Joe corrects me I am okay with making mistake and trying new things because the atmosphere is so comfortable. I've had many family members join me for class as well because I enjoy it so much I wanted to share it with them. Recently, Joe was super smart and decided to make Saturdays free to bring a friend. So smart and definitely worked as my sister later purchased a membership. I have been so happy to see her grow as well and she also thinks so highly of Joe and the gym. She also had been to previous CrossFits and did not continue due to the intimidating atmosphere. Most recently, I have struggled with my mental health as we all do at some point and something clicked in me where I started seeing going to CrossFit as a privilege not a chore. By increasing the days o was going from 2 to 6 a week, I feel amazing mentally and physically. Less anxiety, more energy, excited. I always feel amazing after a workout never regretful. Even when I don't want to go to class, I still force myself to go and it makes me so happy and makes the rest of my day productive. I could honestly go on and on about all the things I love about this gym but I should do my schoolwork at some point. Thank you coach Joe and all you do for CrossFit Shokunin and the community. I have been at CrossFit Shokunin a little over a year now and happy to say it's my hobby for a girl who never liked hobbies. I encourage all of you to try a class at Shokunin even just once no matter your fitness level. There is a scale for everything and the coaches are so patient and supportive. No-nonsense here. For a while I kinda got used to gyms where it's either bro-dawg o'clock all day and there are footprints of spilled protein powder all through the bathroom - where someone may or may not be able to get a new tattoo - or - it's 5am and some interdimensional door opened between real-life and instagram and everyone walked out wearing like - 6 pack ab filters, brand new lululemon, and airbrushed makeup ready to "work out". But then there's this place and it's a gem. I'm so glad it opened in our neighborhood - I would recommend it to anyone. (Also - while the gym itself bumps an expectedly more rachet selection of motivational music, the bathroom features easy-listening radio and a variety of soaps and air fresheners - because Joe cares about cleanliness, and our feelings.) read more

CrossFit Family Coaches and members together are a great support system. Everyone is there to support, encourage and push each other. Super clean, new equipment, comfortable and motivating. Coaches are very attentive and won't let you slide on slacking or poor technique. We did a drop in class while on vacation in Arizona. This is a very well set up box. We loved all the new equipment and the very personalized coaching. They have an awesome schedule with lots of options. It was a great work out, my arms are Jell-O. Lots of great tips and nice scaling options. We were impressed! This is a fantastic gym! The owner and coach, Joe, is very dedicated and awesome at what he does. The people are all so fun and welcoming and not intimidating. I had never done Olympic lifts or barbell work prior to coming to CF Shokunin so I like that there is a big chunk of each class dedicated to learning and practicing the movements before you start the actual workout. This gym is amazing! I got in a car accident not too long ago and the coaches have helped me continue to work out while still recovering. The stretching, light core work and modified workouts have all really helped in my recovery! The wod's are carefully planned and the coaches truly care about you and your fitness. Joe not only guides through workouts focusing on good form but can also inform you of good nutrition to maximize your workouts, if you so desire. The coaches are all great at giving me the motivation to succeed and really listening to what my goals for Crossfit are. There are people of all fitness levels at this gym; elite athletes, intermediate athletes, and people brand new to Crossfit. Everyone is treated with respect and Joe does a great job of scaling or enhancing wods to your fitness level. The facility is amazing!! It's very spacious, clean, and safe. Plenty of room to socially distance and plenty of materials to clean your workout gear/space. Joe does a great job of keeping up on deep cleaning of the gym along with enhanced Covid cleaning protocols. There's even plenty of room and equipment designed for mobility and stretching.
