I had a whole house fan timer switch break on me. The HVAC contractor quoted me ~$900 to replace the switch and have a surge protection device installed. Looked around for an electrician since this seemed like an electrical problem and not a HVAC problem. CRKT quoted me a price half of what the HVAC company quoted me. When they got here, they also informed me that I don't necessarily need a surge protection device either but did tell me utility companies/the state now require it so it was ultimately my call. Ultimately went with it since it won't hurt to have. They arrived on time, had blankets and plastic sheeting to cover the areas being worked on.
