I stopped by here a few Saturday's ago with my girlfriend for lunch. We were looking for a place after a morning at Stone Mountain park and I happened to find this place on Yelp. The "restaurant" itself looks like it was the caboose car from a train which is pretty cool and only housed the kitchen. Then beside the kitchen is a big smoker which was on the day that we were there which allowed us to smell some of the smoke. There are also a number of picnic tables around that you can enjoy your meals on if you choose to eat it there. For my entrée I decided to get the jumbo chopped pork sandwich and also told my girlfriend that I would help her to finish her chopped pork platter with sides of mac and cheese and greens. My chopped pork sandwich was large as promised and had a good amount of BBQ sauce on it. The pork was tender and I could taste the smokiness in it while the BBQ sauce tasted great as well. The mac and cheese and the greens tasted nicely as well and ultimately I was glad that we stopped here. The bottom line for me is that I would definitely head back here again in the future. Even though it did not look like a spot that I would normally frequent, I loved the location and thought that the food was pretty dang good as well. read more

One thing that I've been craving for a long time is good Southern barbecue. The moment I got to Georgia, I started planning on my first barbecue expedition. Crazy Ron's is a terrific example of good road side barbecue. The restaurant is an unassuming hut behind the gas station. They offer many barbecue favorites. I was dismayed to not see pulled pork on the menu. There was masking tape covering some items, and let me tell you, this tape was quite good at masking. So, I assumed they ran out of pulled pork and went with the chicken breast plate. My friend got the chopped pork sandwich. Most menu items come with 1-2 sides. I went with mac n cheese and baked beans. I'm not sure what I thought chopped pork was, but I regret not trying that. Chicken Breast The chicken breast plate comes with a breast and a wing. The chicken was cooked perfectly, with a strong smoky flavor. The meat was moist and complemented well by barbecue sauce that was not overwhelming. This is top notch barbecue chicken. The one thing I disliked is the fact that they chopped up the chicken breast without deboning it. Like the new KFC ads, I actually had a moment where I realized I ate a bone. They should either debone it or not chop it up. Baked Beans These looked like terrible, like school cafeteria-caliber. Fortunately, they tasted a lot better than they looked. I think they could've easily given me more beans, and less broth, but any fan of baked beans should be able to enjoy Crazy Ron's Baked Beans. Mac n Cheese This was more of a disappointment. While there wasn't anything inherently wrong, the places that execute mac n cheese perfectly make me expect perfection from every place. Crazy Ron's didn't reach this standard. 4 stars - I will likely return to try the chopped pork and find out what the chopped beef is like. Crazy Ron's provided a great meal at reasonable prices. They could easily provide greater attention to detail to their sides. I'll have to try the Tipsy Pig next to figure out which is the local king. read more

This place was great. We had just arrived to the area, staying for a quick vacation in Stone Mountain. Starving, we were looking for a place to grab a quick and tasty bite. After driving past once, we turned around and gave Crazy Rons a shot. With just the simple look of a roadside BBQ stand, who knew what we were in for. His smoker looks brand new, as well as his log splitter, generator and even the picnic tables! Ron himself greeted us at the window and convinced me that I could surely handle the famous "lunatic" pork sandwich - 3/4lb pork that has coleslaw and pickles on top. I couldn't back down from the challenge of course!! I have to say that the sandwich was absolutely fantastic and I definitely rose to the challenge to finish every bite! When I pick the turkey up from crazy Ron's I went home and unwrap foil from turkey it was black and dry! The turkey looked burn and taste very dry. What a waste of money. I usually dig little roadside hole-in-the-wall places. Sometimes you find a gem. Sometimes you find a petrified turd. This was the latter. The "homemade" mac-and-cheese was a greasy mess; the cheese had broken, and the pasta was a watery mess. The meat was, at least, edible. The sauce was okay. Found this place on our way to Stone Mountain via the Yelp app. t's in a structure that is one step above a trailer. For the record that is A+ in my BBQ book. I don't need ferns with my BBQ. "Dine in" is a couple of picnic tables. You order at the window; the lady taking the orders and money was pleasant and efficient. As is our routine with any new BBQ place, Hubs and I got pulled pork, mac and cheese, baked beans and collards. The sides were tasty - nothing to gush over, just good. The meat, however, was very good. Nice smokey flavor, not too fatty or gristly. I liked the sauce - it is not as sweet as a typical Georgia sauce (i.e. thick and sweet). This one is a little thinner and slightly peppery without being spicy or hot. Good balance all around. Tip - ask for the sauce on the side. They serve the meat already sauced. and they use a generous hand. It was a bit much for even Hubs, and he drowns his food. Portions are generous. With drinks for 2 we spent about $23. read more

I first tried Crazy Ron's BBQ over 13 years ago when it was just the train. They were amazing back then. Today is mine and my husbands 8th wedding anniversary and we decided to start the day with a hike up Stone Mountain. We skipped breakfast so by the time we got down to the bottom of the mountain, we were really hungry. I suggested Crazy Ron's to go since it was right outside of the park. Ron's place is very covid19 compliant. We get home and yes! It is still just as good. We got a rib plate with cole slaw and collard greens and a sandwich with mac and cheese on the side. The sauce is some of the best sauce I've had on my BBQ and I am very picky about my sauce. As husband was eating, he said Babe, you need to write a good review for this place. This is a really interesting place to go. There's a little bit of eating space out in front - on basically picnic tables. However, in general I would recommend you go here to pick up your food and bring it back home. If you happen to be visiting Stone Mountain, this would be a good place to order food in advance and take you back to your hotel room. You can definitely re-create a feeling of a family picnic experience with this particular place. In general, the sides are not all that good - but the meat/barbecue is fantastic. Crazy run his clearly figured out just the right recipe for his barbecue sauce, to make this place a really enjoyable smoked meat experience. The baked beans seem to turn out a lot like what you would expect from McCann - but if you add some of his barbecue sauce to the mix it's really good. The green vegetable dish of the day is always a good selection, but I would recommend not getting the coleslaw. I really didn't enjoy it and there was nothing you could do to it to make it taste any better. It certainly is a health side, but not that yummy. read more

I'll give them a star for effort but I'm new around here and I'm from the city but I also used to live down south from a young age. No smoke flaavor at all the baked beans seemed like no flavor. Mac & cheese there was no cheese no seasoning it was just awful, chicken seemed like it was just sitting around all day. It's hurtful for me because I'm pregnant so when I want something and hoping it's good then I dOnt eat it. The sweet tea just taste like tea and waTer.. Shack? Yep. Kind of in the middle of nowhere? Uh huh. Was it good?....Absolutely. Since we happened to come by this spot on the Saturday before the Super Bowl, they basically were out of their normal spareribs because folks had pre-ordered already. They just had their rib tips and their pork sandwich left , so we got those. Rib tips- Even if these guys weren't swimming in the spicy sauce provided, they would've stood on their own. The smoke flavor (some kind of sweetness involved) went all the way through the meat. It really made me wish I had pre-ordered some of the spareribs. Sigh. I guess there will have to be at least one more visit, despite the distance. Chopped pork sandwich- Tender, juicy, just right. Dude, yes. Crazy Ron is not crazy, but his barbeque is crazy good. Everyone is completely right about it being a little dubious looking; it's a little shack (decorated to look like a train engine for some unknown reason) sitting on a lot next to a gas station and an abandoned hardware store. The smoker just sits in back, chugging away. You have your pick of the standards: pulled pork, chicken, ribs, and at least when we were there, brisket. We both had the sandwich plate, which was true to form, a pulled pork sammich, slathered in sauce, with a smallish side. It didn't look like much, but turned out to be the perfect lunch portion. It's four and a half hours later and I'm still quite satisfied. The Q itself is pretty great. Meat is smoky and a good consistency. The sauce is exactly what my wife likes, a sweet and thick sticky mess (I tend to like a little more vinegar, personally). Definitely worth driving out to Stone Mountain for. Crazy Ron himself (I'm assuming it was Crazy Ron) is a really nice guy who obviously is serious about his work, and his daughter (who took our orders, rang us out on a desk calculator, and gave us our change) is about ten and adorable. There are a few caveats: The only seating is a couple of picnic tables and they're cash only (although the gas station has an ATM). I used to work for Dekalb Co. Fire department and stationed not far from this place. I have driven by it about 1000 times and never stopped. Don't ask me why. I don't have a good answer. Today was the last time that I will ever say to myself " I should try that place sometime" as I drive by at 45 mph. I had just gotten off work and it was a little bit out of the way but I was committed to getting some good BBQ. The thunder and lighting were in the air. A storm was on the horizon and I knew I didn't have much time before I was getting wet. As you can see from my pictures this place looks like the front of a train locomotive. There is a huge smoker outside and huge pile of wood used for the smoking. Crazy Ron's sits in a gravel parking lot next to a run down old gas station. There are a few uncovered tables out front that look a little warped from the hot Georgia sun. During peak traffic times it can be a challenge to get in and out of the parking lot. My first impression was not a great one but the lady working the counter was able to change my mind for the most part. When I walked up I asked her if they had any brisket. She explained that there was a beef product but it was a roast and not really a brisket. I am usually turned off by the idea. If I get chopped or sliced beef I want an actual brisket. So I asked her if I could get just the smallest smidgen, the smallest little taste, the smallest little nibble of a taste just to make sure that I wasn't going to be wasting my money. She immediately made this weird face that would indicate to most people, myself included, that she was saying no. As I turned to look at the menu again I said "well that's your loss of a sale" meaning at this point I would probably just order a few ribs and not the rib / beef combo that I wanted. WELL..... I saw her, she heard me and then she said "wait a minute I was going to let you try it" and from there on all wounds were healed. I ordered the chopped beef and rib combo with stew and potato salad. Since I have not had their sauce before I asked that it please be put on the side in a cup. When I got home and sat down I opened the main container to find a pretty healthy portion of chopped beef. It had a nice flavor to it and was fairly tender and juicy. There was also 3 fairly large dry ribs that were easy to pull off the bone. Had a nice dry rub that added a little hint of spice to it and a flavor similar to the beef. I wasn't able to finish it all by myself. I had to share with my boys ( the 4 dogs, who are all at least 75 pounds each ) The stew was "almost" good. It had a lot of meat and veggies in it but the flavor was a little off for me. I have a theory why. There was okra in it. As much as I love okra and as much as I love stew, the two mixed together don't jive in my opinion. So I think if you take out the okra and add a little more of your BBQ sauce, the stew would be on point. The potato salad was definitely a little different. It was different in the fact that it was absolutely homemade fresh. It had a very smooth velvety texture to it but lacked just a little bit of that mustard taste and maybe a little extra salt / pepper. Other than that it was really good. The meal did also come with three slices of white bread. The sauce seemed to be a familiar taste but I can't say for sure from where. I'm not going to say that it wasn't their recipe but it seemed more commercial than homemade. It was good though. The real downside to this experience was the cost. My meal WITHOUT a drink was $25.00 That is a little pricey for me. If we could have gotten the price down to about $20 I would gladly pay that for again. The price is the ONLY reason that I would not visit Crazy Ron's again. I'm sure there are probably a few options that might be more economical but then I could not have gotten the meal that I wanted. read more

Let me be clear: You should eat here! While on vacation, we found Crazy Ron's on yelp, and since our goal was to eat anywhere except a chain restaurant, we headed over to Ron's. Seeing a little shack made me raise an eyebrow, but I figured between Yelp reviews and the fact that the best BBQ comes from roadside stands, we would be OK. WOW!! Amazing food, friendly owners and patrons, we really scored! Even though we wanted to eat at many different places, we went back for more the next day. We would've gone again on Sunday, but he was closed. I have no idea when I will be back in the area, but I will be SURE to stop at Crazy Ron's!! I asked if he sells bottles of the sauce, and he broke my heart when he said he didn't. Yummy, yummy, yummy! I finally pulled up to the shack, and the food did not disappoint! Ron has an expansive menu, especially considering the size of the place. I surveyed the shack to be approximately 8'x4'. Where do they store all of that food?! Smoke billows from one end. I had to ponder, then re-ponder whether my engine was overheating. Whew! No, it was simply Ron doing his thing! The menu offered a hundred "plates" of this and that. You know, the meat, the sandwich, the combo, the combo and 1 side.... Being that this was my first visit, I ordered a breast sandwich with a side of baked beans for just under $6.50. It was terribly hot outside, so I asked how long it would take. Just 10 minutes. That was fine, especially considering the line ahead of me. You get three choices while you wait: hover under the shade of the shack, sit at the covered picnic table, or wait in your car. Given that it was about 100 degrees, I sat in my running car. When my plate was ready a guy stuck his head out and waved me over! He was so precise with that gesture that I think most folks opt to sit in their car. The food was very good. I think this is the first time EVER that I've contemplated DRINKING BBQ sauce! The delicious chicken was sitting in a small pool of sauce and it was enough to feed two people---- and I'm talking about a SANDWICH, folks! The 2 slices of white bread were kept separate by wax paper. The baked beans were to die for. I don't know if they make 'em themselves, but wow! Ron MUST know how good the beans are because he served them in a small 1/2 cup container (I thought it was for extra sauce). Aw! Give me more, Ron! What a marketing genius! Are we in Chattanooga? Choo-Choo With all these BBQ reviews I have in a row, I knew I was missin' one from the past couple weeks of gluttony. And a good one at that. Crazy Ron's serves some of the best spare ribs in the Atlanta area, and they got the thing I look for most.....bbq heart. Heart in the meaning of love of serving people, which can never be measured outside of how they make you feel through soul food. You can feel the love these guys put into the BBQ just by taking into mind the small outpost that they man daily...like Atlanta's version of a street vendor. Come rain or shine they huddle in their small make shift shack producing food that they want the people to love. There is no big restaurant glory clap at the end of the day or magazine covers waiting them. Just the hope that the right amount of customers will pass their train station and help the engine keep movin' down the road. I will give high scores for their ribs medium scores for their pork. low scores for their side items. The side items just seemed salty or congealed...like they have been held and reheated on steam tables. These practices are usually acquired from great backyard cooks that find problems in producing quality food day in day out. I'm sure his s'''t is good when first made, but it is probably done in large batches and held all week. But the BBQ is worth stopping for..no doubt about that. When I tell someone that I can remember Crazy Ron's ribs...that means they are good. I am from nyc and have never eaten bbq before! We went hiking at stone mountain, and after, we decided we earned it! This was the closest bbq place and we were not disappointed. We both got the pulled pork sandwich with macaroni & cheese. It was delicious. My only complaint is that the roll got very very soggy so I couldn't even pick it up. I ended up at Crazy Ron's after passing by with co workers. We could literally smell the BBQ smoking as we drove by. I had a sample of the rib tips and they were outstanding but ended up ordering a pulled pork sandwich which was great as well. Their MAC N CHEESE was absolutely to die for. This place is a treasure. It's literally a red stall with smokers next to a gas station; don't allow that to dissuade you. Picnic tables encourage friendly banter with other guests. Within our group we tried all the sides and everyone was delicious! Ribs were tender (I'm told) no one would allow me a bite. Pulled pork and bbq chicken also very tender, well seasoned and yummy!
