So..I've passed this place a few times and decided to try. I should have walked out once I heard the tone an employee used with a customer. I waited a hour and 15 minutes for food that was horrible. I ordered cabbage. The employee knew it was sold out and did not tell me. She also knew the turkey wings were sold out and instead of letting me know so i could change my order, she took payment and never bothered saying a word! We came here because we had ventured all the way up to Lawrenceville to get food from Who's Got Soul, but they were not open! We ended up going home and remembered this was nearby. We ventured in. Their food was decent. I got the turkey wings with rice, smothered, Mac and cheese & cabbage. Mo got baked chicken with rice, Mac and cheese and candied yams. Both meals come with corn bread. Food was decent. Sides were on point. Corn bread was also on point. I wish they had oxtails! Turkey wings with gravy was missing something, I didn't get the flavors I thought I would. I would probably come back and try their other dishes. They have made to order and stuff that's on the line/hot food. Well the restaurant was very clean and smelled fresh. The Mac and cheese, cabbage, and black eyed peas were good. The tea and lemonade were way too sweet along with the corn muffin. My mom had ample servings, which she enjoyed. The cashier was very rude. She did not want to get off of her chair to hear my order. I was standing on the side that housed the good so I could see what I wanted. That really bugged her. When I did come over to the side where she remained seating, she still had trouble getting my two-person order correct. Usually no problem, but she was so rude and acted as though everything I did and said was a problem. I was surprised by her negative attitude. When she brought our plastic plates and miniature plastic forks and knives to the table I noticed that I had half the amount that my mom had. Not wanting to endure her again, I didn't mention it. We tried this restaurant Saturday after having driven past it many times on hwy 78. We decided on take out and I'm glad we did. The place is small and has seen better days. No ice machine, instead an employee scoops ice out of a cooler with a cup. Their health inspection score was 97 so that was comforting. But the two chairs in front of the counter looked so bad I stood up the entire time while waiting for our order which took longer than we were told it would. The cashier said 15-20 minutes once we placed our order. This was not a surprise because many of the items were listed as CTO (cooked to order). However we waited 30 minutes. We ordered wings and several sides (greens, mashed potatoes, yams, black eyed peas, okra, mac and cheese). They were out of squash. I enjoyed most of the food especially the fried chicken. The mashed potatoes were a little bland and the yams dry. The mac and cheese was just so so. The buffalo wings were also very good. All meals were around $10. Considering the location, pricing and certain items I like, I would maybe do take out again. read more

We found this hole in the wall spot venturing to Hardee's, had a discussion about how Soul Food restaurants had gone down hill, and wanted to see if things were different up here in Lithonia. My first impression was they had No Soul since word about them hadn't spread to our neck of the woods, but my family was leaning towards giving them a chance, so in we went. Line was to the door, and upon entering, we weren't greeted by neither of the two female cashiers. Strike 1 in my book. We ordered to go, paid, sat and waited. We were gonna eat in to soak up the atmosphere, but it was riddled with loud music and a TV playing on what we thought was a giant flat screen, but was just a projector reflecting it onto the wall, giving you the impression. Very laughable! So we chose to go... I remember thee food not being anything to write home about, and the patrons all looked like they needed a wake up call to what real soul food (and Southern Hospitality) was. It's more than a crummy name and crappy service! Strike 2: The food. Again, this was a few months ago, so things were hazy, but it left no impression for me to come back there. Strike 3, was equivalent to how I wanted the food: OUT, of my stomach...and Soul for that matter. We haven't been back since, but their greens, Mac and cheese, black-eyed peas, and baked chicken... Please hold your saliva back... Was all bland, and tasted microwaved! That health department rating should've served as a much better greet, and wake up call. I asked for two sides of collar greens. Each side was about 2 tablespoons each!! Cashier said that's the size portions and I would need to talk to the owner about it. Portion size for the fried whitings was also small. They were two pieces but small pieces. This ain't a French restaurant this is Soul Food we like large portions! Made a special effort to support a black owned business. This one not so good, today. We all have room for improvement, myself included. The worse service of my life I ordered 3 meals and paid for my food online for it to be delivered and after 2 hrs still nothing has Arrived. Upon moving to GA, my initial order of business was to find an AUTHENTIC soul food spot... nothing commercial (won't mention any names... yet) I was looking for AUTHENTIC! Living in Stone Mountain, I tried several in the area and neighboring cities, and none did it for me. One day, a neighbor had to tell me about this spot, because it's tucked away and doesn't get much visibility from the street. On my initial visit, I had to go with the traditional BBQ chicken, Mac and Cheese, yams and cornbread. Although I wasn't over the top impressed with the meal, I could tell the chef could cook (food was flavorful) and the owner (who was there training some new employees) had passion. Since then, I gave up on the BBQ chicken and usually default to the fish or lemon pepper wings. The Mac and cheese is a hit and the wings (yet small) are super flavorful. I'm HUGE on customer service and they try REALLY HARD HERE. If you can get past the generic welcome shout from everyone that hears the door chime, you'll see that the staff (yet young) really do care and genuinely want to serve. The food is good but the service is confusingly bad and blame the owner/ management. The wait times were so long that I saw at least 2 tickets get thrown in the trash because people had left after having ordered, paid and waited; the workers only had "well, that's stupid" to say. I wondered what happened when those customers returned. The staff was using a single iPad to place all orders (dine in, call in, carry out) which caused the back up. There were 8-- I had time to count-- tickets/orders waiting to be made and with only 3 workers (the cook, a waitress to the 2 people dining in and the cashier/runner) there was no one making orders. I waited for 6 minutes to completely order. I started and the cashier/runner answered and placed 3 call in orders while I stood in front of her-- with no apology. The sides are all cafeteria style on display. When I saw a young man walked up mad because he had waited over 20 minutes to get a side order of Mac & cheese TO GO; I should have taken that as a warning. I tried this place via UberEats. I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to order the veggies that I like because they would be cooked with meat (as is the case with most "southern" restaurants). So I called the business and asked which veggies were vegetarian-friendly and not cooked with meat or meat broth. To my delight, the lady informed me that all the veggies were vegetarian-friendly including the beans! Even though I was very happy to hear that response, I was then worried that the veggies would be bland. I order the fried green tomatoes appetizer and 4 veggie plate: mac n cheese, cabbage (they gave me collards instead), garlic mashed potatoes, yams and cornbread. The portions were nicely sized, and everything was seasoned well! Cons: I would have appreciated them informing me that they were subbing collards for cabbage, and the mac n cheese could use some pepper. As soul food places go, this place has a more polished or upscale decor. It is very clean. The health inspection score was 91. The staff was friendly and efficient. They do have quite a few menu items that you dont typically find at soul food restaurants, such as pasta, sandwiches, and fried cheese sticks. Some of these items are made to order. They also sell domestic and import beer and wine, by the glass or bottle. As much as I wanted to really like this place, they lost one star because there menu items are a bit overpriced given the portions. I ordered the shrimp alfredo, which was very good. For 11.99, it had only 5 medium shrimp,with no garlic bread or salad. This is not a great value, in my opinion. The desserts must be pretty good. A woman came in just for chocolate cake. They didn't have any chocolate cake that day. They "didn't have time" to make it. There is nothing like having a taste for a certain food and find out that they are out for whatever reason. This place is just ok. I was excited to see a Soul Food restaurant that was convenient to where I live. I have to say I'm a little disappointed with this place but it's definitely not the worse. The restaurant itself is really tidy and comfy. The staff are always friendly and it makes you want to return. As far as the food goes it's just ok. It's not mind blowing or something you would feel like you have to have. It's just an alternative to getting what you really want. I've ordered the BBQ chicken and fried chicken and they were alright, just a bit over priced for the portions. They have fries which have a garlic kind of taste to them which are also alright. As far as sides go, the cabbage is delicious and so is the macaroni. The macaroni is their signature as nobody makes it the way they do. I enjoyed that and to be honest I feel like it's their saving grace. The collards are a bit undercooked and the yams were tasty but left a bad after taste in my mouth. Oh and they have squash on the menu yet they never have it when you order it. The green beans are really delicious as well. The desserts: I've had the banana pudding and the peach cobbler and they were....ok. The banana pudding would be really good if they incorporated more vanilla wafers. I mean that makes the dish so very delightful. Their pudding tastes very boxed (I doubt it was homemade) and you can barely taste the wafers because they're like little tiny crumbs. The peach cobbler is really good, I really don't have any critiques for that. Again it's not something I'd go running out the door for but I wouldn't turn it down if it was offered to me. After my husband went inside to look at a menu we decided to give it a try since it was black owned and the staff was very nice. I hate to write this review because I really wanted to love this place. The staff is so great! They even gave me a free side of yams because they ran out but it's my duty to review with honesty.....The little food we got was TERRIBLE! The mac and cheese tasted like it was Kraft mac and cheese from the box, the mashed potatoes tasted like paste, the string beans we're too salty and swimming in water. The rice was tasteless and dry. My son got the kids chicken leg which I didn't let him even eat because it was covered in grease and has absolutely no flavor. We actually got him chick fil A instead because we didn't want him eating such awful food! The best was the small piece of cornbread and the kind staff. We dined in. The seating is limited but we didn't have to wait. I think that will change as the place grows in popularity. The menu choices were good. Meatloaf, pork chops and fried chicken or turkey etc. A good choice of appetizers and side vegetables too. The fried green tomatoes were excellent!
