Went to lunch with my Dad. I haven't had BBQ ina while. It was great! The frito pie was unlike any type of pie I had ever had and I should have gotten it for the meal instead of the side! The BBQ sliced beef was tender, moist and perfectly done. The sauce went nicely, but the meat didn't really need it. The owner came out and said hi and checked on our meal. He was very laid back. It is a great place to eat, when Larry is there during the day, but try not to go at night; due to the horrible service provided by high schoolers. I really question if they could even spell "Quality Customer Service." It's probably not a good idea to hire friends of the family. Back on subject, the frito pie isn't bad or the chopped beef sandwich, but really--- maybe you should rethink everything and just make your own frito pie at home and save 10 dollars. The food was excellent and we were served plenty. Decoration was on point and I love that it's a family business where the mom and dad and sons cook, which were all kind and generous. Which is more, we come from New York and have been on a cross country road trip eating in every state from California to New York, and this has been one of the highlights. This was the worst dining experience ever. My wife's chopped sandwich looked and tasted like beef jerky. I ordered the bbq frito pie which had the same dried meat on it. It was terrible! I don't know what that sauce was, but it was not bbq sauce. To top it all off, it made me sick; and I didn't eat that much of it. Its a shame that is place uses the name Texas on it sign! This place knows how to make BBQ. When I say "BBQ" I mean the real stuff -- the kind that doesn't have to be drenched and cooked in some weird honey-molasses-cinnamon-apple-pie concoction to have some flavor. I'm from Amarillo and now live in Dallas. When I come back to visit family, I ALWAYS come here at least once!! One time I flew there and and before going to the airport, I got 6 chopped beef sandwiches to go and all the sauce on the side. Since I had to carry it on, I went to the trouble of putting all the sauce into about 6 3-ounce containers! My husband really enjoyed dinner when I got home! The owner is the sister (I think) of the person who owns Doug's bbq in Amarillo. Before Crazy Larry's opened, that's where I went. They started to go downhill, but the stuff at Crazy Larry's is how Doug's used to be.....the sauce is my favorite!!!!! Get the half-order of frito pie and add extra sauce.....oh yum! I've only been to Amarillo once in my life but, if I ever return, I will be dining at Crazy Larry's Pit Bar-B-Que. This place has everything: meat, mullets, and inspirational messages on signage. First, let's talk meat: they got all the cuts and slabs you could ask for. Frito pie seems to be the local favorite. It's a premium choice if you're looking to transport some old-fashioned, artisan chili meat into your stomach at a high velocity. I ordered the sliced brisket sandwich and was not disappointed: they take some handcrafted brisket meat and place it in-between two slices of a golden, lightly-toasted bun before adding some Crazy Larry's "Slam-Ya-Face" sauce. Fantastic execution! Props to Crazy Larry for pioneering a game changing meat consumption formula. Now, mullets. I know you're thinking "Woah woah stop. Mullets in a Yelp review?" Yeah. Mullets in a Yelp review. When I visited Crazy Larry's Pit Bar-B-Que, Crazy Larry himself was present in the establishment. While I didn't have direct contact with him, he made an impression upon me that will last a lifetime. His majestic and slightly poofy mullet commanded my attention as soon as I entered the seating area. My gaze was disrupted only to coordinate the aforementioned meat transfer from my sandwich to my gullet. Citizens of Amarillo should seriously consider petitioning the City of Amarillo to name Crazy Larry's mane as a city landmark/treasure. A ruling like that would be a home run for both Crazy Larry's Pit Bar-B-Que as well as the City of Amarillo (Can you say tourist trap??). Finally, I want to say a bit about the prominent sign that marks the location of Crazy Larry's Pit Bar-B-Que. Most Bar-B-Que establishments have signs that relay the name of the restaurant and, maybe if you're very lucky, the tagline or slogan. Crazy Larry's Pit Bar-B-Que takes restaurant signage to the next level: they have the name, slogan, AND AN INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE. This is unmistakably a game changer. Why would you ever want to go to any other Bar-B-Que establishment when you can be motivated by a Crazy Larry aphorism while gorging your body with Crazy Larry approved frito pie? When I visited, the adage that greeted me was "We Live By The Choices We Make." This is an invaluable little reminder that our destiny is ours to command. I commanded my destiny by shoving greasy meat into my body (ha ha). Since my visit to Crazy Larry's Pit Bar-B-Que, I feel more confident and my performance is notably enhanced. Coworkers stop me around the office to ask me what's different. I grin and shrug my shoulders but I really know what's behind my new self-image (Thanks Crazy Larry!). If you love, love, love pepper and don't mind having your mouth set on fire then this is the place for you. I would try to give you an idea of how the food tasted but all you could taste was pepper. My wife and I were driving on I-40 on our way back from a skiing trip in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was in the Amarillo, Texas area around dinnertime. Since we were in Texas, we thought we should try some Texas BBQ. A quick search on Yelp gave a few suggestions, but Crazy Larry's came up with 4 stars out of 5. It was a little bit out of the way, but we wanted some good BBQ. We were greeted by 2 guys who were very friendly and helpful. My wife had the sliced beef combo that came with sliced brisket, ham and sliced sausage. I had the sliced beef and Hotz combo which was sliced brisket and a spicy hot link studded with peppers. Both combos came with potato salad, coleslaw, beans and bread. There is a relish bar complete with peppers, pickles, onions, relish and sauce. While ordering, I noticed alot of the customers ordering frito pies, so I had to find out what the hype was about. I'm glad I did. You gotta try the frito pie: Frito chips topped with chopped brisket, beans, sauce and lots of cheese. My wife and I devoured the 1/4 plate. The Combo plates were good as well. We were driving cross-country on US-40 with the goal of hitting excellent barbecue places, and I have to say that Amarillo looked dubious. Could there be more here than the Free* 72-oz Steak Place you keep seeing on billboards? The answer is yes, Doug Henks! Excellent ribs, smokey and spicey, although a bit too salty. Brisket was amazing. I had no idea what a Frito pie was, but had to try it. That is about the best thing you can do with Fritos - crunchy Fritos with meat, beans, and sweet sauce. And you can't beat the price - much better than a fancy place for tourists. The only think we didn't like was the Texas link sausage. It was more like a soft patty, not the snappy spicy sausage we're used to. Looked like a local's place, and we were worried about having a jukebox-scratching-to-a-stop moment when we walked in through the door, but everyone there was super-nice, asking where we came from and how we heard about the place. first time here and I will be back! I am usually a Tyler's fan, but as he is closed today, I decided to give Crazy Larry's a try. I pulled thru the drive up and was met at the window by Larry himself! He is very friendly and recommended the frito pie. I got that with some extra sauce to go. Let me tell you, this meat was very tender and not chewy at all. I could only get thru half my frito pie as the portion is huge! This is not even BBQ!!!! No smoke ring or smoke flavor whatsoever. Nothing here is made from scratch - the freshest thing might be the fritos in the frito pie. The ribs are almost certainly boiled and briefly thrown on a grill....not even long enough to get a slight char. The BBQ sauce leaves a lot to be desired. I was incredibly disappointed, to say the least. If you happen to be driving through Amarillo, please for the love of god, don't make the same mistake I did. I thought it was among their family restaurants but the taste is different from my favorite Bar b Que hut on Grand Street. That one's name is Henk's so I just failed to notice that the names were just similar, only a little change (like the recipes!)
