Gluten free empanadas? Say less! We were wandering through the San Ramon farmers market when we spotted Crazy Empanadas, and the long line instantly felt like a good sign. We grabbed their 3 for $14 deal and went with one veggie, one beef, and one chicken. Our order came out quickly, complete with a couple of hot sauces. The first thing we noticed was how hot and fresh everything was. We didn't realize all their empanadas come with potatoes mixed in with the protein, it was delicious! I was working at the Dublin Police Services Trunk or Treat event at Emerald Glen Park when the hunger pangs hit. I walked over to where there were three food vendors set up. Two of the lines were long and one was practically non-existent. My general rule of thumb is that if there is no one waiting, there might be a very good reason. However, I couldn't stay away from our display long enough to wait for the two busy vendors to get my order out. Fortunately, sometimes looks can be deceiving. The service was fast and friendly. The Empanadas are cooked to order so there is a short wait. The pricing was $5.50 for one and there was a special of 3 for $14. I got one Chicken Empanada. It was hot out of the fryer. The exterior was crispy and delicious. The filling was a bit too well ground for me. I would have preferred something more to chew on. But the pastry itself made the meal for me. A gluten free empanada??? What?!? I was very skeptical but loved everything that I ate. The empanada was made with a corn flour dough and it was very good and filling. The prices were good too. Found this food truck at the Sazon Latin Food Festival in SJ this past weekend. Got the 3 empanadas for $14 deal, and tried the chicken, beef, and cheese. The cheese was my fave, keeping it simple. The beef and chicken ones came with potatoes inside, and though I'm not a big fan of shredded meat, they had decent flavor. Not too fond of the yellow corn dough either, but it was cooked to a nice light crisp which I liked. Service was standard, and the wait was reasonable, less than 10 minutes... These Empanadas were just alright, nothing quite to write home about. The beef Empanada didn't have a ton of flavor or spice, pretty thick crust and lots of oil. Same with the Chicken Empanada as well. The Hawaiian empanada was the unique one of the bunch, lots of cheese, big pineapple and ham chunks making it a unique treat but I couldn't eat more than one. We have several food allergies and the lovely people in this food truck helped me find something to eat (the fries!) that was amazingly delicious AND was safe. The meat(s) are well seasoned, the fries compliments the dish, the avocado, cheese, and special sauce top it off just right! The portion size to the price is just right. Saw the loaded fries coming off the truck - gut busters for sure. Office peer got the chicken empanada. It was of decent size - 3 normal bites or two large chew like a hamster bites. It's the same chicken that was in my arepas. She said it was a 7/10 with it being on the doughy side. I think $5.50 for an unknown amount of protein could be holding people back, but what do I know. This truck parked in front of shadow puppet brewery. My boyfriend ordered the cheese, beef, chicken, Hawaiian empanada, and the salchipapas with "sausage", cheese, quail egg, and pink homemade sauce. Out of all of them the one that had the most flavor was the beef... or their salsa. For some reason the chicken was mostly full of potato's so you could barely taste the flavors of the chicken. (I.E. not even sure how the chicken was seasoned or what was used to season it because the potato's were bland and overwhelming. My expectations from the Hawaiian empanadas were that the filling would have been evenly distributed however, all I tasted was cheese and one piece of pineapple. Later on, I found the ham but after numerous bites. There was 2 empanadas that we had were SUPER hard. Like an old person can loose their teeth off of... I've had plenty of empanadas before and they were never like this.. The one saving grace of this place was their salsa. It has a great balance of flavor, acidity, and heat. I ordered the crazy arepa Which has fried lechon (cross between bacon and chicharron), shredded beef, shredded chicken, cheese, and topped with avocado and 3 little sauces on the side. With tax this cost over $17. Arepa is considered a street food in Venezuelan so this was really pricey for a sandwich. It was also very stuffed and came in a small box so kinda hard to eat because you can't really pick it up like you are supposed to. Being that there was almost no place to sit it made eating it super challenging. All in all I would try this place again but I might stick to one of the more standard arepas that can be held. read more

Truck menu online shows empanadas, arepas, patacones, etc. Menu on the truck has perhaps 15% of the items, a very scaled down menu with only a few empanadas choices. I wanted arepas. So I walked away. I understand limiting menus for practical reasons on a truck. Can't be angry, which is why I gave 4 stars. But do something to manage expectations, post current menu online, or at least post a notice when offering a limited menu. read more

I saw this truck while visiting the Fremont Art, Music and Wine festival and wanted to give it a try because I saw they had Arepas which is something I haven't tried before. I ordered the Arepa lechoncita which comes with thick cut bacon, plantains, corn and avocado. While I liked the composition of the ingredients together, the bacon was HARD. Not like a nice crispy with some chew, it was straight up hard. At some point it kinda became annoying to chew. Maybe the bacon was left sitting out for a while or was over cooked, but the texture of the hard bacon didn't do it for me. Crazy Empanada - 2. Arepa Lechoncita - Food Trucks Near Me - San Ramon, California

Got to try them from a local Street Eats event. They specialize in Colombian style empanadas and arepas. Since I've never had an arepa, that's where I had to go. Nice truck in a festive bright yellow with their logo. Arepa Antioquenita ($15/3.5*) So an Arepa is a South American street food that is similar to a Pupusa (El Salvador) or Sopes (Mexico). I say similar cuz the main base is a masa dough cake. Same corn flavor and texture as a fresh corn tortilla, just much thicker, thus more substantial. Not sure how other arepas are constructed, but this one, the corn cake is thick and flat, then rolled into a cone. Then they stuff this cone according to what you choose. Very interesting and unique presentation but was cooler in appearance than it was easy to eat. This particular arepa had Columbian style Bacon, Beans and Rice, Fried Plantains and Avocado. It wasn't listed but it also came with 3 sauces, which was cool but a bit overkill. Since I only had one item here, I'll break it down with a little more insight. The Corn Cake: Very nice. Quite soft but not as soft as pupusa dough. Quite thick made for nice meaty bites. Good corn/masa flavor too. Seemed like it was lightly grilled much like a tortilla or pupusa, but almost no brown blotches. I liked this part of the dish. The Rice and Beans: This was almost like one dish. The redish/purpleish small beans were mixed/mashed with the rice. So one scoop of this went inside the corn cake cone. Very bland but I think it is supposed to be that way, as everything else has good flavor. A good Hispanic base that I always find comforting. The Columbian Bacon: Basically just small diced pork belly pieces, well salted and deep fried. Like deep fried to almost chicharon status, so quite hard and a bit dry. I like chicharon but usually not as is. I usually like it rehydrated in some sauce or topped with some sauce or salsa to give it some moisture. I liked the flavor here, but it was just too hard/crispy that some pieces were like eating hard plastic. I just ate the ones that were softer. The Plantains: I usually love fried bananas and this sounded like a great add. But the plantains were a bit too sweet for me that it reminded me of a dessert. I usually just like the natural sweetness from the banana itself, this had an additional sweetener added to it. The Sauces: Came with a greenish mayo which was okay. A very onion-y tomato salsa that also had a decent heat. Also a bit sweet for a salsa, so maybe some ketchup was part of the equation. And this pureed pineapple sauce that was really unique, great wallop of sweet and tang, almost like a chutney. So pretty filling dish as the double carb of griddled corn cake and a scoop of rice and beans is a super hearty base. And even though I liked the presentation, I found that eating it as a cone proved quite difficult. So I just ate it with a fork still in it's container. That way I can get different things in one bite. I wouldn't mind in trying more things from this truck, if I ever do run into it again.
