I wanted to give this place a chance but kept getting put off by the location which is not on the most glamorous part of Granville and always has people smoking right outside... but I finally braved it, and no problems with the environment inside. It's just small. The menu is all basic Indian dishes. The lady who took my order was so nice, I kept changing my mind while I was ordering and she kept smiling through it even though it was probably frustrating. They didn't have me pay until after I ate and I almost forgot to pay because I'm so used to paying when I order. I ended up ordering a chana masala rice bowl and a mango lassi. The portion for the bowl was very generous, a little heavy on the rice proportionately, but there was still plenty of curry so I just had some rice left over at the end. The chana masala was very good. I saw some pictures online that looked soupy but this was a nice rich and tangy tomato gravy. Medium heat was substantially spicy! The mango lassi was also surprisingly good, it really tasted like fresh mango. Really the only downside is that the food all comes in plastic bowls. I normally at least use my own cutlery in these situations but the spoon was already stuck in the bowl when they brought it out... oh well. The food was good at a good price. Went here to order Butter Chicken on rice in a bowl along with naan bread for lunch today. There was only one dude working here. Dude heated up some rice in the microwave and touched my naan bread without washing his hands. He then accepted money for an order for a homeless dude. Then touched my naan bread without washing his hands. Called the dude out on the hand hygiene and told him I won't eat the naan. He just took it out after saying okay. I left with the butter chicken on rice. Chucked it out in the garbage bin after a second thought and walked into KFC across the street. Would not go back here again. I just ate the samosa and the butter chicken combo for dinner, and I immediately felt the urge to Yelp it because it was so good! The naan bread was flaky, soft, and moist in an amazing way. The samosa tasted very fresh and homemade. The butter chicken had big chunks of good quality meat, and the lentil soup was spicy and full of flavour. The menu has many options for both vegetarians and meat eaters. The place is better suited for takeout because it's very small and it's a bit dark. I think the price is very fair for the quality of food. I live close by, but I did not discover this place until now probably because the location is a little sketchy on Granville street. Came here on a recommendation of a friend. He mentioned the Indian food here was VERY good, and that his Indian food cooking instructor recommended this place. Maybe I came in with a bunch of expectations as a result, but it definitely wasn't as stellar as I had hoped. Wow, this place is kick-ass GHETTO. There are 4 tables (8 seats in total) with mismatched chairs. The front is open (patio-style) so if you're sitting with your back facing the front of the restaurant, be sure not to accidentally fall backwards through the open window and break your head open on the sidewalk. There's a (ghetto) plastic utensil holder nailed to the wall, and you know the place is authentic when there are black specks all over the spoons and stuff. Awesome! The staff were very quiet. It looks like a husband + wife (or cousins) team. Today I went all out and had the lamb curry with samosa upgrade. The food came somewhat quickly, and it was brought to us.. in the cheapest plastic trays I have ever seen in my life. The plastic was so thin it was almost transparent! The flimsy containers you find in bags of cookies are thicker than this. As for the food itself.. the curries were quite good. Unfortunately, the dish was cold. As in barely lukewarm. So was the naan bread. Good thing I'm used to eating cold leftovers at home, or I would've sent it back. The samosa tasted.. creamy? But this is not a bad thing. Normally they're way too dry. Yay for good affordable Indian food downtown! I haven't started eating Indian food until recently. All the curries have different flavours, all which are wonderful. The butter chicken combo ($11) includes a small salad, rice, daal and butter chicken. It's not a lot of pieces of chicken, but it really is filling. It is a slightly sweet tomato sauce. Chicken tikki masala is good as well, but I cannot comment as it was a tad too hot for me. Lamb curry was also nice, not that gamey. Bought the paneer and chickpea wraps. The naan was baked fresh and super delicious. The filling was a bit over spiced in the paneer one which is why I've docked a star. But overall great portion size and enough for 2 meals if you're not a big eater. Will upgrade to garlic naan next time. read more

Hadn't been back here since early 2020 when the pandemic hit, until recently. Enjoy the food here once in awhile but sadly the value is no longer there. Used to be able to get a proper curry rice bowl (in a bowl) for around $7-$8... now it's $10.45 + tax!!! Approaching rip off territory for what used to be a reasonably priced special. During a recent visit, noticed following: - Curry on rice special no longer served in a bowl -- it's in a small plastic tray w/ 2 sections (1/3 curry, 2/3 rice). There's hardly any room for the curry/meat, and the rice takes up most of the tray. This tray reduces meat & curry portion significantly, NOT COOL! - Meat portion is STILL SKIMPY! I raised this in 2014 in my first review, sadly nothing has changed 8 years later... if anything they've reduced the meat you get even more via the new tray! In my chicken curry there were 4 tiny pieces of chicken, the rest was just a little bit of curry sauce, and mostly rice!!!! WHAT A RIP OFF!!! Really pissed off with the constant downsizing of portions here and the constant increase in price. Why should we pay more for less??? What a slap in the face... felt like a fool paying what I did vs. the tiny portion received. Looking at other low-rated reviews here and on Google, I see the small portion sizes is a CONSTANT COMPLAINT from many reviewers over the years. Sadly will no longer be coming here anymore because of this. To the owners -- bring back the $7 curry on rice bowls in a BOWL, and give customers what they are paying for which is MEAT (at least 6-8 pieces)! Another late night, we were on the hunt for food. We didn't want hot dogs, fries, or hot dogs. We walked by this place and it still looked open. We peered inside, and spotted butter chicken on their menu. "We could use some butter chicken.." Then the lady in the shop came to the door and unlocked it for us to enter. She offered us a butter chicken & rice combo for $5.95. We were sold. We took a seat at one of the tables. This place is small, with only 8 seats. Within minutes, a bowl of butter chicken on top of rice arrived. Verdict: Butter chicken wasn't bad at all. Smooth creamy sauce, but lack of chicken pieces. It was a bit more spicy than I'm used to though. The rice was fresh. This was seriously the perfect late night eat!! They also have lots of other options on their menu. I absolutely love Indian food and I don't think that fact skewed my opinion of my experience at Crave India. I visited this establishment a couple of nights ago and intend to go back tonight. It's the best causal dining Indian food establishment I've been to in Vancouver. It gets a solid five stars from me. If you read my previous reviews you'll learn that one of the things I am consistently looking for when I review different restaurants is value. Crave India has tremendous value. I truly felt like I got my monies worth in visiting this establishment. The restaurant itself isn't one that allows for you to sit and enjoy your meal. It has about three small tables inside, so the idea is that you get your food to go. This isn't a deal breaker for me. I will say that I had to reheat some of my meal when I returned home, but it didn't negatively impact the taste. My favorite thing about this establishment was the gentleman making naan bread from scratch! That was a big deal to me to see that the food was being freshly prepared right there in store and not being warmed up out of a plastic bag that was bought in bulk at Costco. The taste of the food was great. I ordered the chicken tiki masala and it was absolutely delicious. The meal came with jasmine rice, salad, naan bread and lentil bean dish. It was flavorful and filling. I loved that the masala had fresh peppers in the dish; again proving the freshness and quality of their food. I also had their chicken stuffed naan bread. This, too, was a delight! All this and I spent under $20CAD. Treat yourself to Crave India. It's not a suit and tie kind of establishment, but it's damn good and the value is impeccable. read more

Definitely not as authentic as other Indian restaurants, but it satisfied my craving for Indian food. The restaurant itself is quite tiny. I recommend Crave India for takeout, not for dining in. The staff is very friendly and my wait time was next to none. Chicken is always tender and moist and the curry flavor is spectacular. Go here!! It's also extremely affordable and you get big portions. Yum. This place is legit! I got the palak paneer combo, which can be risky at fast food places, but it was delicious. The dal was great too, although I didn't get to enjoy it too much on its own (explained below). What dal I did try, was creamy with lots of lentils and beans (not too watered down). I'd love to give this place 3.5 stars if I could, but it's not quite at 4 stars for me for two reasons: 1- I wasn't able to specify spice level. I like things on the spicier side, and when I asked to get medium spice I was met with a blank look. It ended up tasting great, but for people that need something milder or like a bigger kick, you might not be able to get that here. 2- I ordered take-out and unfortunately on my 10 minute walk to the office, my entire meal had mixed together. The combo comes with salad, rice, dal, and your specified dish, and it is all on one cafeteria-style platter with different sections. Because it was packed in a plastic bag, it slowly started to go vertical and my palak paneer went into my salad (totally covering it, so I didn't even realize I had salad until I ate a sauce-covered cucumber) and the dal went into the palak paneer. I visited the place on Friday evening. This was the first time I tried Indian food and wanted to find a no frills, authentic restaurant so I can take my time with no hassle from a waiter or waitress. Thanks to Yelp I found Crave India. I didn't except to find this kind of place in the middle of Granville st and super happy I gave it the chance. it is a super small place ran (probably) by an Indian family. They have limited selection of dishes, all of them looks tasty. It is suggested to arrive in the slack hours as there are only 5 tables which accommodate 2 persons each. The dishes are big and tasty. the one thing I really loved was that you can see from the counter how they prepare the dishes and the bread. If you are looking for a cozy, tasty and cheap place to get your Indian food, I'd highly recommend this one. don't let the appearance fool ya. read more

Usually if you're a late eater you have to settle for what was average several hours ago. It's 1053pm on a Thursday. They close at 11pm. I am getting freshly rolled and tandoor-baked naan and it's not greasy. The lamb curry is on point and well the daal isn't terribly special but it obvious they like rajma (it's a bit beany). And I would say it's slightly overpriced but we are talking downtown Vancouver, and for the hour and the care to make something rather than reheat, and the tastes are there. I don't like my food too spicy to begin with, however, the other people I was with didn't seem to enjoy themselves as they've experienced far better. In other words it's very subjective. Hangover Prevention = miracle naan from Crave India? We've all had pizza, tacos, hot dogs and ofcourse poutine to satisfy our late night muchies, but I discovered a new guilt-free "healthy" late night snack, which I swear has hangover prevention properties: freshly made, delicious butter naan (if you're really nice they might give you a side of butter chicken sauce for dipping). I've only tried the naan but my friends had their chai which they actually steep for a couple minutes which is a lot of effort for 2:30am in the morning! The owner? is super friendly and welcoming, especially with all the Granville Street characters one might find after a Saturday night out. There's nothing fancy about this tiny Indian take-out joint on Granville Street-- but they serve up generous portions of tasty curries, samosas, naan, and such quick and cheap. Just what we were looking for! After being out and about in Vancouver all day, we just wanted to pick up something easy before heading in for the night-- and preferably not from a typical fast food chain. We were fortunate enough to find Crave India just a few blocks from our hotel. The restaurant itself is underwhelming, to say the least. It boasts a minuscule dining room with a few small tables, but you can tell right away that this is NOT a fine dining establishment! The smells of simmering curry and fresh-baked naan coming from the kitchen, however, told me at once that we had found the right place. We had a couple of samosas while we waited for our meal to be prepared: yum! When all was said and done, we departed with a large sack containing two entrees, a huge order of naan, and rice for less than $30 (including the appetizers)-- less than I would expect to pay for each of us at one of the 'fine dining' Indian places in the Seattle area. I'm not gonna lie-- this was far from the best Indian food I've ever had, and both the quality and presentation were severely lacking compared to most of the more upscale Indian restaurants I've been to. You ever bite into a big mouthful of Butter Chicken and have it be a hard candy still in it's wrapper? If that's something you want to experience then eat here because that's what happened to me, more on it later. So I saw the sign go up before it was open and I was happy because I live in the area and I love Indian food and the closest place to me before then was a bit of a walk up Davie St. a few blocks. Few months after they are open I stop in for what I'm hoping to be a delicious meal and boy was I wrong. I give my order and it was suggested that I get the combo instead because it would be cheaper and little did I know they'd be talking about the food and not price. I added a can of Coke to my "cheap" combo meal and no joke it came out to almost $20, so at this point I'm thinking it better be good because I could have walked up to India Bistro on Davie and had a great all you can eat buffet for $12. Well they serve your food in what looks like a jail house plastic tray with the cut out area's for your food which makes it look highly unappetizing and add to that the portions are insanely small. The plastic forks, spoons and knives are dusty and needed to be wiped down with my napkin. I'm eating this food which wasn't really anything to write home about already and I just had a feeling like I've been taken or cheated, "Almost $20 for this crap!" I'm thinking. I finish in about 5 minutes because like I said the portion sizes are miniscule at best and I go to take my last bite of butter chicken and bite down hard and to my utter disbelief it's not soft chicken at all but A FREAKING WRAPPED HARD CANDY IN MY BUTTER CHICKEN. At this point I'm in just too negative a head space to even say anything to the people working there and I just leave. The one positive was the Naan bread but I mean what Indian place doesn't have good Naan bread. Nice place to stop for a quick take-out meal. I've had the butter chicken a few times now and it's decent. Not earth-shatteringly good, but decent. What makes this place for me is the naan. I know that Indian places should have good naan but a surprising number don't. This naan is made to order in the tandoori oven, and it is delish! In the interest of full disclosure, I've not tried anything but the butter chicken. Oh, and it's not fancy, it's ghetto. A $4 chicken thinger from donair spot probably sports about twice as much meat. And you know it comes down to meat. This lil hole-in-the-wall India place is nestled between some bigger restaurants on Granville. I came upon it by accident. There's literally 4 tables in the place. It's very small. But the food is reasonably priced and you get lots. I usually get the lamb curry combo and I always have to take some home because the portions are too much for one sitting. There's a side dish that comes with the combo that has lentils in it. Usually it tastes like dirt but once it was actually yummy. Everything else though is great.
