I / We have used Craters and Freighters before for shipping , but did not think this task /job, was in their wheelhouse. Boy was I wrong. Okay, I was in a jam with a piece of equipment (a tool room Lathe) that needed to be moved by a deadline of 12:00 pm. I called 6 equipment moving companies in the By Area. Out of all of them, one said they would be there the day before, and never showed up or answered his phone, the following day, and he texted me saying he'd call, never did. (Shame on you, you know who you are) As time went on, I called another one and could not do it until the following week. I did not think (Crathers & Freighters) Will's team did this type of equipment work, I call at 9:30 that morning tell him my situation, he sent his team over show up right at the time they said they would. I received a bequest for a valuable Wurlitzer Jukebox and a Jacobian desk from an estate in Pacifica, CA. I searched the internet for a shipper to get the two pieces to me in Iowa. Craters and Freighters in Hayward went to the residential location, carefully packed and wrapped the two pieces, then built custom crates and packing for both, and handled the freight choice to get them to my drop spot in Iowa. (I then hired locals to get them into my home) When they arrived in PERFECT condition the care taken to insure their safety was terrific! BOTH pieces were crated and cushioned to an incredible safety level. I felt like I paid for the BEST and I GOT the best! Crater & Freighters shipped an antique dollhouse for me to Brooklyn NY. The price for airfreight delivery was just under $3000, including extra $500 for "White Glove" delivery service. For the extra money, Craters & Freighters agreed to arrange special handling in New York to uncrate the dollhouse and place it into its preferred location inside an apartment. I was required to pay the full amount in advance. The pickup and air freight shipment were prompt and the item was well crated. HOWEVER the agent at Craters & Freighters neglected to contact the white glove delivery service which was to transfer the dollhouse from the airport to its destination in Brooklyn. Contrary to our agreement, the precious dollhouse was simply picked up by Craters & Freighters and given a "tailgate" delivery by one person, who left it on the sidewalk in front of the apartment in Brooklyn (with rain immanent!). The recipient in Brooklyn, unable to move or uncrate the heavy item herself, was forced to make numerous phone calls to San Jose and to the intended white glove delivery service in New York -- without any assistance from Craters & Freighters. Eventually, the white glove service located its own contractors to perform the intended delivery. I asked for a rebate from Craters & Freighters because they had neglected to fulfill the white glove delivery I paid for. After I called them twice, they offered me ONLY $50 to compensate for our trouble and their complete failure to make arrangements for white glove delivery. Because of their failure to fulfill our contract and failure to compensate me adequately for their poor service, I would not recommend Craters & Freighters! read more

I have used Craters & Freighters twice recently - once to ship furniture from Florida to Brooklyn, and now to ship family heirloom furniture cross-country from Oakland. Pricing and appointments were easy; guys wearing masks picked up items; everything arrived very quickly. Most importantly - they did EXCEPTIONALLY careful and professional packaging and protection for my precious items - custom-built crates, tons of styrofoam and bubble wrap padding, even an extra empty box to make sure the crate was full and stable, the whole thing stapled to a pallet. I've worked with Will C. and the rest of the C&F crew for two shipments now and I simply couldn't believe the wonderful job they performed on the major crating assignments we gave them. We occasionally have the need to move large pieces of sensitive scientific equipment several hundred pounds to a ton in total gross weight and C&F have had no qualms taking our business and helping us out as we have no dedicated logistics team. I have to say, their crating and vapor barrier bagging skills are probably the best in the area bar none. Their servicemen are friendly, punctual, and work as hard as they can to get your shipment ready as quickly as possible without sacrificing any of the crate's structural integrity or ability to keep their contents secure. Great customer service. I really felt that they were trying to get me the lowest possible price. I just moved across country. I only had a few boxes worth of stuff, so a POD or big truck moving service were not cost effective options. To make matters more complex, I was also moving a large plasma TV. The correct way to ship a flat screen TV is to put it in a custom wooden crate (which Craters & Freighters can do!), but that would add a lot to the cost of the shipment. I spoke with Steve P. over the phone and we decided to compromise by building a custom pallet so that my TV's box (original from store) could be surrounded by my other boxes. I dropped everything off at their warehouse and they wrapped it up tightly on a pallet. I shipped over 750 lbs for much less than the $1.2k that the second lowest option had quoted me. They were really nice about holding onto my pallet until I had gotten a new apartment to ship to. Once I gave the word to ship, though, my things arrived in less than a week (BTW, the TV survived without a scratch)! If you are moving and have too much to mail but too little to require a whole POD, I recommend you give Craters & Freighters a call. read more

The artist contracted with Craters & Freighters to crate it and they did a very good, professional job. The crate was almost 6 feet long and weighed about 100 pounds. After I had uncrated the painting, I was not sure what to do with the empty crate so I called Steve in San Jose. He immediately offered to have someone pick up the crate the next time they were in Redwood City. I called to get an estimate for a couple of crates. Steve suggested that his movers can move all my fragile items and my household items. He mentioned he had openings for next week and not to worry. I asked him for an estimate. He gave me one over the phone and set up an in-person estimate for me as well. The person who came over seemed a bit inexperienced (Steve insists that he has 20 years experience). The guy who did the estimate didn't look over my household items thoroughly. I had to call Steve back and asked him to add the "big plants" and "sofa." The estimator didn't discuss how he would wrap my furniture especially the all glass and lacquer pieces. At this point, I was losing faith in what this company can do for me but I thought to give them a chance and see what they would come back with for an estimate. A couple of hours later, he emailed me the estimate which wasn't broken down to the specifics such as the hours it would take for the move and the cost of the insurance. I was disappointed but I felt I should discuss with Steve. I called the next morning. I told him that there seems to be a huge discrepancy in the estimate. I also shared with him that I questioned the estimate due to the estimator's experience. Rather than addressing my issues, he felt he had to defend his employee and the higher estimate. Then Steve, all of a sudden mentioned that he may not have enough movers for next week because they were unable to fit all 4 movers in one truck and that he would need a second truck. All of these things were not mentioned until I questioned the estimate and voiced my concerns. This seems to me like a bait and switch. At this point Steve said that he would have to check his schedule. After the phone call, I politely wrote him back and said that I have decided to stay with the previous mover - Pedro's Moving. Steve should know that most people with whom I have worked with in the past would be very close to the estimate over the phone as an in-person estimate. Also the last I checked this is still a soft economy I doubt Steve's business is booming for him to even try to go back on his word. A lesson for Steve - in business, if you can't stick to your word then you don't have much. I called and talked to Pedro's Moving and I stated my concerns. I spoke to Jill she addressed my concerns and mentioned that they would make sure that the movers would wrap all of my fragile items in a newspaper wrap, wrap them in blankets, shrink wrap them, wrap them in blankets again and shrink wrap once more. This is what I call customer service and I didn't get the BS that I got from Steve and his crew - high estimate, distrust and unprofessionalism. On top of that the estimate I received was $700 less. I wish Steve success but I don't recommend his business to any of my colleagues or close friends. read more

I was back in McAlester, Oklahoma and needed to get my father-in-law's antique dentist cabinet shipped back to my home in Saratoga. At first, the only quote I could get was from a local North American Van Lines, for $1,460. I began to try to give the cabinet to a local friend instead. But then I found Craters and Freighters, who came to the storage unit where the cabinet was, picked it up, "palletized" it and protected it, and separately wrapped up all of the original porcelain trays from the drawers, and delivered it to my California home (faster than their estimated time of delivery) for $590.
