Sooo good. We stopped here as an included lunch with our trolly tour, and loved it. The California salad and sushi was fresh and flavorful. Staff was rather curt. We got takeout and they put all of our sushi rolls in one container. The edamame was already cold and the rolls were not good. We ordered two of the "avocado kappa" rolls (avocado and cucumber) and they each had more cream cheese (which was not listed on the menu) than avocado and cucumber combined. The brussel sprouts were the highlight of our meal, even though they could have been crispier. I came here for a bachelorette party because it seemed like the nicest restaurant in the area. Crate was smaller than expected but we were still sat comfortably. Our server was very nice and had good recommendations. However, I think it's ridiculous to charge $7.00 for sake drinks. It's rice wine and not even REAL alcohol. I'm from Los Angeles and they wouldn't even charge that here. If you don't offer hard alcohol you should at least advertise that you can bring your own wine and charge a corkage fee. I would have much rather done that. Also, our food took ONE HOUR to get to us. Which is ridiculous. Maybe I'm spoiled in LA but sushi is usually one of the fastest made meals. So that just means they must have been under staffed which should never happen on a Saturday evening. As far as the rolls go there were a couple good ones but overall I was completely underwhelmed, especially for the price. I would say I've been to much better sushi restaurants but if you're craving sushi avoid this place on the weekends because the service is apparently slow. read more

Service was terrible. Our reservation was at 7pm. We were seated right away. Restaurant wasn't even half full. We didn't receive our food for more than two hours. We were served at 9:15. We asked the waiter what the issue was and he said they ran out of prepared sushi rice. It would take more than 40 minutes to make another batch. Seems crazy to run short on sushi rice in a sushi restaurant and it also didn't account for the other hour and 45 minutes. Waiter forgot my drink. Food was mediocre. Lobster bisque had no chunks of last lobster in it and it was thick like paste. We will definitely not go back there. read more

We made reservations for dinner this past Saturday for my Hubby's 59th birthday. By coincidence, it was also the place we stopped for lunch on a wine/brewery tour earlier in the day. (Lunch was burgers -- nothing special.) We really looked forward to having steak that evening. From the get-go, our waiter seemed annoyed. He blew by us several times (and the place was not that busy). Gave a quick rundown of the specials. My Hubby is a little hard of hearing, and ended up ordering an item they were out of. Instead of just explaining that it was not available, the waiter -- obviously irritated -- barked "I told you that already." He then walked away to give us more time to look at the menu. When he came back, my Hubby told him that his comment and demeanor were less than professional -- to which he replied, "EXCUSE ME???" He stood over my husband, posturing like he was some sort of tough guy. My Hubby told him to walk away -- he asked, "WHY?" -- and I pitched in and told him to get me the bill for the one beer I had since we wouldn't be eating there -- at this point he got loud and belligerent with ME. Hubby called and spoke with the manager today -- who (without hearing our side) took the waiter's side. It's obvious that the lack of professionalism and poor customer service skills come from the top down in this establishment. BTW -- we ended up going to Trattoria Dal Santo -- which had the BEST steak I've ever had, AND fantastic service. read more

They said the chef was rolling our sushi, but then another person said there was still a ticket in front of ours... just be straight up with us. Our family decided to try Crate for the first time for our daughter's birthday dinner. Our server, David, was lackluster and was much more personable and energetic with the people at the table behind us. I am leaving 3 stars rather than 4 stars because the oysters were served too warm, they weren't on ice which is the standard way they should be served. In addition, my bacon grits served with the scallops entree were lumpy and thick, definitely over cooked and not grits-like at all. If I'm paying $35 for a dish, all of the components need to be well executed. The sushi rolls were very good. If I return, I will get sushi rolls and avoid other items on the menu. read more

We are staying in Sturgeon Bay on vacation and had dinner at Crate tonight. We did not have a reservation but they sat us right away at a table near the bar. Our server, Tom, was wonderful and answered all our questions about items on the menu. We started with the Crab Cakes that were delicious. David ordered the Lobster Bisque and we both enjoyed it immensely. My mouth was watering watching the sushi being served so I ordered a Philly Roll and it was fabulous. David had the Friday Fish Fry and said it was great. I had the Mahi-mahi with the blueberry reduction and it was terrific! We will definitely be back again. Booked a table for 6 for their soft opening. This place is solid. With a few tweaks it's easily 5 star. Pros: Our table was ready when we got there, the vibe is upscale and hip. Not what you would expect in Sturgeon Bay. Music in the background was enough to set the scene without stealing it. Easy to have a conversation. Low lighting but not dark and we found it easy to talk, whereas other reviewers thought it was loud. We did find it ridiculously hot but it seemed to get cooler after we mentioned it was uncomfortable. Wait staff and many patrons sleeveless in January. Food: Amazing! Our group started with the calamari and smoked salmon apps. The calamari was tender not chewy with a light tempura batter. Whatever the sauce was it hit a home run with the table. The smoked salmon amazing. Think smoky lox. Most of the table ordered the soup Plankintons Revenge. It's a cream based french onion with, home made soft croutons and CRAB covered in cheese! Outstanding! The salads were generous but not enough to split. The bacon and avacodo would have scored big except it came with no avacodo. (oops!) All of the entrees were on point with seared scallops and ahi getting high marks. The caterpillar roll and sake (smoked salmon) nigeri were also terrific. Great beers on tap and the saki cocktails were also well received. Cons: Although the wait staff was pleasant there are some holes to patch between them and the kitchen. Our order came out in fits and starts. People who ordered the soup got it first but salads came along with the entrees for two others. Yet another two didn't receive anything until the rest of us where half way through our meals. The sushi didn't come with soy sauce. When asked for soy sauce a tiny bowl of soy sauce was delivered and we had to ask for more and were give a standard small bottle. Appetizers were delivered without any small plates or silverware. We all stared at the food while waiting for too long for a way to enjoy them. All in all this place rocks. Finally a new food concept. Don't come here for the standard prime rib and fish fry. Fresh, fabulous seafood, priced right in an inviting atmosphere. Sorry it's not bigger. Us locals will never get in here during season. Welcome Crate! read more

Maybe I'm just a food snob but I was unimpressed by by the food. I ordered sushi and the rolls looked tiny - almost like the ones you would make from a little do it yourself kit. If that's the case, I'll just make my own sushi. Maybe it's because I've been spoiled and have had amazing sushi elsewhere but I would not come back for the sushi. Service was okay - nothing special. We then ordered our appetizer of calamari and our entrees a burger and single albacore sushi roll. Our appetizer was not brought our until 7.45. Our waiter then came buy at 8.20to let us know our entrees will be out. They came out at 8.25. The lead time between appetizer and dinner was way too long. Our waiter was friendly and the food was good. Several tables were seated and given entrees before us who had arrived after us. It's really a shame the service was so bad. First off, I have never been a big sushi fan but this place changed my mind. The decor was really cool, pieces of driftwood used as shelves for candles and really cool art on the wall. Our waiter (Benjamin) was spectacular! Great service, magnificent recommendations and very knowledgeable. Now onto the food, we shared four rolls, the Crate-ifornian, the the Golden Philly, the Crabby Bee and both our favorite the Flaming Hooch. All were delicious!!
