We go to Cracker Barrel after 11:00 my husband eats breakfast I don't. He's glad they brought Uncle Herschel's back because that is what he gets. I got chicken and dumplings, okra, and carrots. The carrots were so tender and sweet. I normally get the Sunday fried chicken but I went for something different. The waitresses are so busy you have to flag them down to get a refill or a takeout container. I guess Sunday at 11:30 is not a good time to go. It's hard to leave because you have to shop the merchandise at Cracker Barrel such pretty things,old time pop and candy. It just brings back memories when you were a kid. I was in the Plainfield area for a convention in April 2026 at the nearby Embassy Suites. I love Cracker Barrel, and since this location was in walking distance of my hotel, I was thrilled to have a comfortable, know restaurant close enough that I didn't have to drive. I visited this Cracker Barrel on Friday, April 10th. I wasn't available to eat dinner until roughly 9:00 p.m., so I walked over to Cracker Barrel and was seated right away. By that time of evening, the crowd was light. The hostess was kind and cheerful, but my server, who looked to be a teenager, projected a mild annoyance in having to wait on me from the moment she came to the table to take my drink order. I pride myself on being a conscientious and courteous customer; I worked in restaurants when I was a teenager/young adult, so I understand the job isn't necessarily fun and dealing with people is tough. With that noted, I was looking for a small respite after a long day of traveling and then working through registration and such for the convention I attended. I didn't require much. I knew what I wanted when I walked in the door (chicken and dumplings, a side of green beans, a side of broccoli casserole, and two biscuits; water to drink). My server seemed annoyed that I was ready to order when she came for my drink order. I brushed that off and attributed her apathy to youth. Fortunately, my food arrived quickly--all prepared to perfection and ideal for what I wanted. I had no complaints about my food; in fact, I was delighted to have such a good, comforting meal at 9:00 p.m. I needed one refill of my drink, and that refill took awhile as my server wasn't all that visible. If I recall correctly, I think I saw my server only twice that evening (not counting when she delivered my food to my table). All told, my experience was good, but I wasn't too thrilled with the service. We visited as a group of four and were seated quickly, which was great. Unfortunately, that was the highlight of the experience. It took quite a while for our waitress to come over initially. When she finally did, she immediately asked if we were ready to order food -- we hadn't even ordered drinks yet. After ordering drinks, several more minutes passed before she returned with them, at which point we placed our food order. Once we ordered, we didn't see her again for about 15-20 minutes, until the food arrived. Three meals were brought out, but we had no silverware. A few minutes later, she returned with the fourth meal and the silverware. She checked on us once while we were eating and everything was fine food-wise. I received one refill, and then she brought the check. The food itself was fine, but the service was disappointing. The waitress seemed uninterested and like she didn't really want to be there, which made the whole experience feel rushed and inattentive. What's more frustrating is that this wasn't a one-off. I was here the previous weekend with my daughter, seated in a different section with a different waitress, and had nearly the exact same experience -- long waits to be greeted, long waits to order, and very little interaction before needing the check. I took the kids here this morning to chop away at a gift card we'd received. It also wasn't too far from a small town my husband was gravel racing in. We were quickly seated but they were out of high chairs which was challenging for one parent flying solo with a one year old and four year old. The ended up bringing booster seats and I had to ask for a second one- ha, it was a little like pulling teeth with the hostess. Once we were seated, I'm our server was friendly and on it. The table was fairly dirty under the new menus and silverware so I was grateful that she rewiped it after asking. It looked like it almost wasn't wiped at all before. While we were seated right away (which was appreciated), the host oddly decided to share some behind-the-scenes drama about the servers being lazy and not bussing tables. I tried to call and pass along feedback, but after being on hold for a long period with nobody coming to phone. I'll share my feedback here. First my order was not correct. I understand mistakes happen, but it goes a long way if someone does a check to make sure pickup orders are correct. Secondly, I'd never had watery Mac & Cheese before, but succeeded in had it the experience with order. I hate holding up a line to open up everything before departing, but this appears to be preferred rather than a quick quality control check. Visiting from out of town and hadn't had Cracker Barrel a while, but was disappointed with this location and the no responsiveness of someone from management getting on the phone to receive feedback which speaks volumes. I arrived at 8:30 am and there was no waiting at the hostess station on a Friday morning. Their large dining rooms are more than adequate. I've never seen one completely full. If you've never been to a Cracker Barrel, their dining rooms are decorated with antiques of all kinds. I ordered two eggs, two sausage patties plus biscuits & gravy. My server brought the biscuits & gravy plus the sausage patties out right away. By the time I ate that, I was full and still waiting on the eggs. As it turned out, upon reading my check, my server never placed an order for eggs. The biscuits & gravy were okay. There wasn't much sausage bits in the gravy like most other places do. I ate one of the other biscuits in the bread basket with the only jelly offering available, grape. I would have preferred strawberry. I like the way other places offer a variety of jellies for your toast or biscuit. The sausage was another matter. After two bites I couldn't eat anymore of the one patty I tried. The patty was very thin and over cooked. The taste was unappealing to me. My server passed by my table often but did not check in with me. A manager did stop by but I did not feel like getting "into it" about my dissatisfaction. I used the app to order today when I got off work so my wife or I wouldn't have to cook tonight. I was sore from an episode at work so decided on ordering curbside pick-up. The app said 19-24 minutes so I arrived 30 minutes later to find no curbside spots existed but I did finally see the signs laying on the ground. I parked and went inside to do pick up and was told it wasn't ready yet. I ended up standing inside right at 30 minutes waiting. I really love the laid back casual environment of the Cracker Barrel. The place has a homey vibe that keeps people coming back. The meals are filling and affordable. The food is tasty and really has a homemade taste to it. The parking lot is plenty big enough to accommodate a large number of vehicles. Our waitress was personable and attentive, our glasses stayed full. I absolutely LOVE to browse in the store area. I'd probably go just to look around in there so if we do have a wait it's not a bother. Lastly, I love how convenient their app is. Oh my goodness! We used to think the Cracker Barrel in Plainfield was a treat! Tonight I can't even put into words how disappointed we were! But I'll try! My youngest two children decided they wanted Cracker barrel for lunch since our favorite location on Michigan rd is not open to the public anymore because they do carting now we decided to try this location I will say the food was great just as I expected it to be however the other customers we're not to happy to see us dinning there . Every time me or one of my children looked up someone was staring at us I'm pretty sure they do not have many people of color dinning there Our waiter was awesome she was very helpful had a great personality and she made sure she stayed on top of refilling our drinks and kept checking back on us to make sure we were pleased I DO NOT like being watched and stared at while I'm eating so I will not be returning to this location. The old saying comes to my mind "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all". With that let me just say the waitress was nice. Rarely have I left a bowl of mash potatoes go but I do have a few snacks in my car that will suffice. They were old and dried out with gravy that tasted watered down. The meatloaf was okay. Only the edges were burnt. Biscuits were a bit on the small side but I did eat one half of one. If one were starving I could see stopping in for a bite or two but I am not and I left my plate almost full. This place had the highest rating in this area full of hotels. It has a "general store" with nicknacks and candy and then the restaurant. The food was really yummy. Comfort food for sure so not flavour city but the chicken was cooked perfectly, the portions were huge and it was fun to try these dumplins. They were basically made of egg, flour and salt and then covered in chicken gravy. So great for a -21 night haha. Really extensive menu and breakfast is served all day. Our server was not at all helpful. It seemed like she hated our job. She dropped off the check at one point but no one noticed then when we asked for it she was a rude about how it had been there forever. We quickly got a card out and it took another 15-20 minutes for her to come over and tell us we have to pay at the front. Would have been great for her to mention it when she dropped the bill. It's an area full of airport hotels...I imagine most people are from around here. read more
