I am a champion for local businesses but I still patronize chain restaurants from time to time. Cracker Barrel used to be my go to for a good, hearty, and tasty breakfast. I am sad to say it has really gone downhill in recent years. Cracker Barrel used to serve bacon that was on a completely different level from anyone else. It was thick and delicious. Then one day it changed and that is when the downhill slide started. Portions started getting smaller, the service a bit slower, and the store less welcoming. Recently I had a weekend to myself and didn't feel like cooking, so I decided I would go to Cracker Barrel. It was slow when I arrived and it wasn't too long before I was sat at a table. I did have to wait longer for my server than I expected with as few customers as the restaurant had, but I was eventually seen by a server. She was a very nice, friendly, and helpful person. I gave her my drink order while I perused the menu. Looking at the menu is just habit since I always order the same thing at Cracker Barrel. I get the Sunrise Sampler. The only choice I have to make is eggs over medium because you get a sampling of all of the other sides. You can imagine my surprise when I saw that menu had been changed. There are 75% less choices than in the past. Most disturbing of all was the Sunrise Sampler was missing from the menu. I asked my server about the menu change and she gave the feeling of being just as disappointed as I was. She said many of her other customers were upset as well. I asked about a skillet looking creation I saw in the menu and was told it was good but because of a supplier issue, hash brown casserole wasn't available. Hash brown casserole is the base of the skillet so things weren't looking up. My server said she would ask the kitchen what could be done and when she returned, I was told they could make it with regular hash browns. So I ended up ordering that. It looked interesting when it came out but it was a huge disappointment when I dug in. It was very bland. The only thing with any flavor were the fried onions that were piled on top. Even if hash brown casserole were available, it wouldn't have saved this dish. As my server brought my check, she told me that was I was the only one to get the skillet made with regular hash browns and that they were removing it from the menu for the time being. Apparently some unwritten rule was broken and the powers that be at Cracker Barrel were upset. It is unfortunate because I really used to like Cracker Barrel. The staff is still friendly and treat you like family. It is the corporate side that has changed. If you are looking for a good breakfast on the Southside of Anderson close to the interstate I would recommend avoiding Cracker Barrel and visiting one of the other places in the area, or if you don't mind driving a little bit further, there are two really good, locally owned diners just a couple of miles from Cracker Barrel. read more

My Gordon Ramsey review : for a small town this place was hopping . The facilities cleanliness could be improved upon, the staff was friendly . The drinks we ordered half and half tea and lemonades . The quality of food of you dine in vs take out couldn't be more opposite of each other. Dine in they do very well. I've called in several orders and ordered online, they almost never get it correct let alone give you condiments. I've ordered chocolate chip pancakes more times than I can remember and they always give me plain pancakes even though I spent more money for the chocolate chips. I almost have never been given cutlery to eat my meal with. If you order pancakes you'd figure it would be common sense to give you syrup I had to buy my own. read more

My husband and I went into cracker barrel to have a nice meal. It took 10 minutes for the waiter to even come over and ask what we wanted to drink, and then she forgot our silverware. Tonight's meal was sooooo disappointing. We are old now and have eaten at Cracker Barrel so many times. As a retired couple in this economy it has become a luxury to eat out and carry in. My dear wife and I decided that tonight was the night for a special meal. As we looked at the on-line menu we picked out what we thought looked especially tasty that we would enjoy. I drove the 20 minutes to the south side and placed the order as I wanted this meal fresh! After approximately 30 minutes they brought out my order. I hurried home to help serve what we had anticipated would be a scrumptious supper only to be trully dissapointed. The steak was as tough as shoe leather, the schrimp was overcooked and dry, the baked potato was shriveled up and the side order of pinto beans was like "refried beans", (bean paste). It is apparent that they threw our meal together from already overcooked items and further kept it "warm" with a heat lamp. So in conclusion, the pictures of food items you see online may have no resemblance to what you are served. How dissapointing. In this day and age it is heartbraking that the few small things we onced treasured like those rare delicious meals we once enjoyed from a favorite restuarant like Cracker Barrel doesn't exist anymore. I had a vegetable plate take-out order. It was very skimpy, especially the fruit. See the photo. The fruit doesn't even cover the bottom of the container. This was at the Cracker Barrel at 3311 N Nebo Rd in Muncie, Indiana but I think it's a trend across all the CBs to have smaller and smaller portions as the prices go up and up. Rudest workers I've ever met! After asking for a bigger table (tried to sit 4 adults, one who is 6'4", and a child at a table for 4) the worker decided to yell at me in front of all the guests that it was my fault the table wasn't acceptable and my 5 minute wait would now be at least 30, and he couldn't even guarantee that. Which told me he was going to make sure it was longer on purpose. My 12 year old even asked why he was yelling. The online quote stated 5 minute wait for a party of 5. Rude, yelling boy worker told me that that was only if we would fit in a table for 4. We left and went to the Roadhouse where our wait was less that 10 minutes for a table that was big enough for 6. Had amazing service and gladly tipped the helpful staff a generous 30% tip. I do NOT every see myself patronizing that Cracker Barrel again. read more

Visited on Saturday, July 18th , for a late breakfast. We had about a 15 minute wait to be seated. The food was good as usual. Service was also very good. Rating is more based on what I observed on cleaning of the trifold menus. The outside of the menus were being cleaned well, but the inside was not touched. I watched while about 10 were cleaned. It appears training and instruction were not followed up on. I'm a fan of CB, but in the current environment with CoVid, they need to step up the cleaning procedures to keep patrons safe and healthy. Especially since a good portion of the customers are in high risk groups. read more

Update: I wasn't that impressed with this place when I came here a few years ago but I have since grown to like Cracker Barrel after going to the one in Mesa, Arizona a few times while visiting my daughter's family there. I decided to walk over this morning after I realized the reason I kept skipping breakfast was that I didn't feel like driving somewhere else till I was ready to leave for the day. I remembered I could walk over to this place and walk back to relax for a while before I set out on any activities. The hostess said it would be about 15 minutes for a table. They were crazy busy since it was about 10:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning. I thought I might just beat the after-church crowd but evidently not. I started walking around the little store section but I swear it was only five minutes before they called my name. I was seated and given the menu and saw almost right away what I would probably get, a breakfast that included a nice variety without there being too much of any one thing. Eggs, bacon, biscuits, grits, gravy, and their hash brown casserole, which I can't remember if I had ever tasted before. I threw in a cup of coffee and it ran about $10 before tip. My waitress was a little abrupt, I felt. She was friendlier with the people at the next table that she seemed to know. I know it's hard to visit with people when it's crazy busy in the place but I prefer places where there is a little more friendliness extended. She was attentive enough for how busy it was, though I did have to wait a little bit to get a to-go box. I heard her offering another customer a cup of coffee to go and she was perfectly nice when I asked for one at the end. The eggs, bacon and biscuits were delicious. The gravy and grits were very bland and tasted a little stale, tho I was sure they weren't. It's probably just because they were made from a mix designed for mass production at their restaurants all across the country. I had hesitated to add salt because I'm trying to watch my sodium intake but they really could have used some and I would sprinkle a little on them if I got them again. It didn't taste like the gravy had any sausage in it so it may have been just a cream gravy. Having sausage would have added more flavor to it. I was given plenty of butter for my biscuits and adequate cream for my coffee. The coffee wasn't very strong, I could have gotten away with one sugar if I had tasted it first. Surprisingly, the motel coffee at the Americas Best Value Inn next door was better. But at least it wasn't bitter like some restaurant coffee. I was tickled to see the little brown packets of sugar because I thought that meant they were offering raw sugar as an alternative but when I opened one up I saw it was just white sugar in a brown package. I thought that was kind of tricky If you're staying at any of the motels close to Scatterfield/9 and 69, this is a nice close restaurant, within walking distance of several of them which is a plus. I would eat here again if I wanted to keep it easy, though most of the smaller indy restaurants in the area have a better, more homemade tasting breakfast and friendlier atmosphere if I if you don't mind driving to them. read more
