For our first night's dinner while my wife's family and I were vacationing in St Simons Island, we went to the Crab Trap. My wife and I got there a bit early and sat at the bar while we waited for the rest of the gang to show up. We needed a lil' somethin' somethin' to nosh on so we ordered a half dozen oysters on the half shell and a shrimp dip to go along with our beverages. First of all, the drinks were very cheap ($4 cosomos $2 Bud Lights) but I say that every time I get a drink outside of New York. The oysters were very fresh and the bartender (or whoever) hooked us up with 4 more oysters for free. That's what's up! The shrimp dip was also very good. When the rest of the crew got there, we were seated immediately. I love how the tables have holes in the center for shells, tails, and what not. What a great idea! If you're eating the amount of crab legs and peel 'n eat shrimp that I do when I treat myself to dinner at a place like this, you know what I'm talking about. C'mon, do any of us like to try to put all of that mess on a little b & b plate? It overflows and you feel like a punk when the waiter has to clean up after you. You could get a full size plate for the scraps but then you're taking up so much space. And just having the one plate isn't a good idea either. Halfway through the meal you're fishing through a huge pile of debris searching for food like a raccoon going through the trash. We started out with a cup of crab soup. This soup was some kinda good! It was creamy, full of crab, and it had just the right amount of spiciness. For an entree, I got the pound of snow crab legs with a baked potato and corn on the cob. My wife got the grilled shrimp with cole slaw, a baked potato, and hushpuppies. Everything we had was delicious and came in Texas-like portions. My plate was like a mountain of crab legs and it's hard to believe that it was only a pound of them. The pile of cole slaw my girl got could be seen from space. And how cool is it that the corn came in the husk?! + 1 Star for the snow crab legs! These crab legs were so good that trying to describe their merit is not an easy task. Fresh and tasty. Perfectly steamed with lots of meat in every claw. The grilled shrimp were also amazing and every side dish we had was very good. If you're in St Simons Island, this place is a must-try. read more

I LOVE the Crab Trap! I insist on going here every time I come to St. Simons Island. This is a classic seafood restaurant. You can't go wrong ordering the catch-of-the-day. There are fried shrimps, crabs of all kinds, and my favorite, the "combo platter," where you can order two half-portions of most items on the menu and sample more than one thing! The place is really cute. Murals of fishing boats, and nets, buoys, and the like decorate the walls. The old wood benches give that "right-off-the-wharf" feeling, and the tables have a hole in the middle. Beneath the hole is a wastebasket. The hole is useful (and fun!) for tossing shells and other refuse into. The sweet tea is divine, the beer is cheap, and the refills are plentiful!! WOW am I disappointed. We walked in and got sat down, immediately noticed our server complaining. Come to find out she was also the training server who was new and attempted to take care of us. Being that most of my party was mainly folks who serve and with every trainee we have ever met being introduced by the trainer, this is the first place that just made the trainee approach us alone even tho she said that she was training. Where is your trainer? What we saw was her slumped against the counter until we requested she come over and introduce herself. The steamed crab legs came out cold and without flavor. The strawberry daquiri came out tasting like ONLY strawberry puree. Everyone at my table tasted it and agreed. At that point the trainer came over and said she was told we wanted to meet her. Well yeah most of the serving world works that way? You meet the trainer who introduces the trainee. Told her about my drink and she says she will bring me more rum for it and charges me an additional $5 without telling me either. 1) your drink comes as described or 2) i can bring you something no charge since it tastes like nothing or 3) thats how theyre made and if I bring you something additional it will be more. The trainee couldn't answer much about the drink that the trainer could have. The trainer told me after my drink was made "oh yeah theyre like that, not much in there" had I known that I could have saved $13!!!! This place was a waste of time. Work on yalls training. Get it together waste of my damn time, money, and effort. Edit: after writing this I went inside to see why my friends were taking so long. I walked in to see them talking to a manager. After speaking to him I found out the server was the one who called the manager over after my table talked to the sever who then said my friend was hostile and she would have someone else come over. She asked us, "Have you ever served in SS?" Thats when her manager came over and apologized profusely and offers us refunds. We declined it as the food was still edible and even tho my crab legs were cold I still tore them up. He tried to rectify the situation and I also apologied to the staff I saw because I know they saw it all happen but there's a way you speak to people. Give respect to get it. Let me start out by saying I've been going to the Crab Trap since I was probably 10 years old, which makes for about three decades of eating. It used to be a treat, fun, fresh food, yummy battered fries and great fresh food. Fast forward to Labor Day weekend, 2013. What a bust (I'm going to set aside the large family that came and sat around us at the bar - with a hoard of kids). Slack service, the waiter was clearly working to impress the girls on the other side, so-so steamed shrimp, flabby and dirty, and a really sad set of crab cakes. They were small, greasy, and mostly filler. Thanks goodness they came with tarter sauce, which was the only flavor they had. My husband had rock shrimp, which the bartender raved about, but looked like something you'd get a Red Lobster. A disappointment all around - I won't be back. read more

We were seated last night around 8pm and waited over 20 mins. Never received water or even a greeting. I get that everyone is short staffed and we are pretty patient, but the hostesses were chatting as were the waitresses. While we were there two other couples left as well. When I mentioned the issue to the hostess she immediately said "oh were you seated in the area behind me?". Indicating she clearly already knew there was an issue. Anyway we LOVE St. Simons and highly recommend the Fiddlers nearby, the brewery across the street, Barbara Jean, Brogans, or pretty much any other restaurant on the island. I would not waste time at the Crap Trap. We had the same issue when we tried them last year. This time we are done. read more

This was our second time trying the Crab Trap. We tried it first a few years ago on a visit to St. Simon's and didn't like it, but thought we would give it another shot. That was a mistake. The shrimp were ok, the mahi was very salty, the battered fries were just not good (and also very salty), and the price was way way too high for the disappointing food. Crabdaddy was packed so we decided to go here instead and the funny thing is that the food over here tastes wayyyy better than over at Crabdaddy's(we tried it when it was less crowd-see Crabdaddy review). I ordered softshell crabs and those were excellent as leftovers even without heating, the meat was tender and sweet as can be. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. Today I ate at this place. We initially wanted to go to crab daddy's which is next door. On a Saturday night there was a 1 hr 30 min wait at 730. We ended up walking next door and waited only 10 mins. The restraint was very dark. The waitress was clearly over worked therefore we didn't see her much. The shrimp and grits which I ordered was a special and was plentiful and delicious. All the portions were plentiful and the price was acceptable. Would recommend this place to anyone. Came here with a local and while we were here saw another local. So that usually says somethig about a place. Food was typical beach vacation fare -freshly shucked oysters: good, a little small, likely bc of the season but nice taste - fried shrimp salad: plentiful amy of shrimp which were slightly sweet. One of my favorite places to eat on St. Simons Island. The staff were extremely nice and welcoming and made us feel at home. The service was quick and the prices weren't too outrageous in comparison to the other restaurants on the island. I got the seafood casserole and it was AMAZING. This may have been my favorite meal of a long weekend. It is very dated and old beach bar, but the food is good, the service friendly, and the prices fair. I had a delicious shrimp creole served on brown rice that was just awesome. Others in my party had the fried shrimp and raved about them, and my young daughter had Mahi and said it was her best fish dinner of our trip. I would certainly make this a must-visit any time I go back. Don't go if you want fancy or stuck-up. But if you want a good meal in a laid back setting, give it a whirl. Also, I agree with the last few reviewers. We tried to go to Crabdaddy's first, and the wait was 45 minutes, so we walked next door and they seated us immediately. Very delicious! The blackened mahi-mahi was excellent. The french fries were some of the best I've had. The batter used is very tasty!!! However, the grilled shrimp was mediocre. Walked in and was instantly greeted by three different people. They made me feel right at home. Sat at the bar and decided to have a Honey Jack and Ginger, though they didn't have the Honey Jack, Laine and Tay went out of their way to see if they had any in stock. They even let taste a few beers and a Seagrams 7 Dark Honey. I was actually a little pig and ordered the Snow Crab dinner and the Crabber's Delight (Fried shrimp, Fried Oyesters, Blackened Mahi Mahi). If you're ever in the area make sure to stop by this place. Awesome crab here... Tables have the perfect solution for the mess if you are "craking" your own, hole in the middle with giant trash bin!!! Oysters are great. Shrimp creole, as well as boiled shrimp were decent. Some southern staples such as delish hush puppies and corn on the cob too. One note: this place as well as Crab Daddy, the adjacent restaurant get downright packed starting around 7, so its nice to go for dinner at 6, so you can at least find decent parking. read more

My friends and I came here for dinner on spring break. We ordered the crab legs which the price said market, however we assumed it wouldn't be more than $30. We were not informed that they would be close to $50. On top of that there was an 18% gratuity that we were not informed was included. We would have tipped of course but it was the fact that no information was included that bothers us. Also, she only visited the table about 2 times. Consistently good food and service. Its our go to on the island. I actually prefer it over Crabdaddy's although it tends to be 2nd choice for many for some reason. I think their shrimp are better. I get the fried shrimp plate with a baked potato or steak and shrimp. Ordering a potato in a restaurant can be risky, but they have always tasted fresh baked. The Service was good and it stops there. The breading on the shrimp and fries was very bland. The shrimp did not taste like fresh salt water shrimp.
