Always a staple when coming to SSI, we prefer it to Crab Daddy's. Prices have definitely gone up and quality has dipped just a bit over the years but still a great place for seafood and drinks. They make a damn good martini to go with your whole crab or fried shrimp. read more

Best hush puppies and cole slaw anywhere! We get their fried shrimp and fried oyster dinners so husband and I get some of each perfectly cooked seafood. Their fries are great, too, and the cocktail sauce is uniquely delicious! We often get take out so we can enjoy it at home, which is just a few minutes from the restaurant. This place has become a tradition every time we visit St. Simon's Island. The day that we arrive to the island we HAVE to go to The Crab Trap. It's a traditional bar seafood menu. It's not going to have anything that is going to wow you or even be off the beaten path. However it is comforting to know that this restaurant knows what it is and does it at a very high level. I love the option for anything on the menu if you don't want deep fried everything. The salad with balsamic dressing is not to be discounted either. And the cocktails are fun and remind you that you are on vacation. The service is incredibly friendly and very attentive. Once again when you walk in it is a fairly standard beach bar atmosphere and you know exactly what you are going to get. It's a must to anyone vacationing in St. Simons Island. read more

My girlfriend and I went to the crab trap after shopping and since we had heard the food was pretty good. We ate the shrimp dip, the crab soup, shrimp creole, and the fried shrimp. Everything was delicious and fresh. We also enjoyed our garlic bread and coleslaw and did not find it "soggy" one bit as another user suggested. We sat at the bar and were greeted right away and our drinks and food were brought out promptly. Beware. They charge a "technical fee" for using a credit card WITHOUT disclosing it either on the menu or front door. I do not like surprise endings . Rock Shrimp tasteless and the slaw has pickles (you might like but I do not). Even the salad is as wilty. I think the hush puppies were good but they probably came from a box. Had an excellent time at Crab Trap last night, probably our favorite meal and service on the island thus far. We sat at the bar and Henry was amazing- very knowledgeable about the menu and made a great drink, we really enjoyed talking with him! The other guys bartending and shucking oysters were great as well, always making sure we were good. Any dish can be cooked how you want it, our blackened shrimp, scallops and mahi were great. I had Crap Trap back in 2013, with my husband. The only thing I remember is the shrimp dip, and have thought of it many times since. So, when visiting my mom, yesterday, we decided to go so I could get some dinner! Of course, I got some shrimp dip to start off, and it was everything I remembered, YUM! My stepdad got some fried oysters, which he enjoyed - I tried one and I thought the batter was pretty good. Dinner wise, I got the deviled crab patties. It came with fries, hush puppies and cole slaw. I thought the crab cakes were ok, but I've had better. The fries, however, were very good. I did not try the slaw, but I also enjoyed the hush puppies! My mom got the Cajun Grilled Shrimp. She was a little disappointed, that they weren't spicy at all. She said they did have a nice flavor though. She also REALLY enjoyed the fries. My stepdad got the boiled shrimp. He ate everything on his plate, so no complaints there! His corn on the cob looked really good. Overall, we enjoyed the atmosphere and that they weren't too busy. I was really looking forward to the crab soup. The menu description made it sound delicious but I was very disappointed. It was supposed to be milk-based, but it seems more like it's oil-based. There's a quarter inch layer of yellow oil floating on top that won't mix in when stirred. Yuck! Overlooking that, the crab goodies at the bottom are just "meh". There's no real flavor or texture to it and it's essentially just ground up fish bits. I was also looking forward to the shrimp and grits but it was way too salty to eat. I'm very rarely picky about food and I've left very few Yelp reviews in the years I've been on (with no bad reviews for a restaurant), but I was so disappointed by my experience that I wanted to share it and warn other tourists looking for good "local fare". I tried to eat them both but couldn't get through more than about ten bites of each before giving up. I really hate it because it cost me $40 just for the two items! It's a casual sit down place and there is a pretty good amount of seating available. It's a little cramped but it made sense because we came around dinner time. I was expecting better food for the prices listed as well as better quality. Each meal ranges from $24-$27 and on the menu there is an extra $3 charge for sharing entrees. The waitress said she wouldn't apply the fee to the bill, but it's a concerning to think that such a charge existed in the first place. The fried oyster basket was okay, I liked the hush puppies but wasn't a big fan of the fries. the fries are battered, but there doesn't appear to be any seasoning on them. They were extremely bland and also soggy. The cajun shrimp also didn't appear to have any cajun seasoning and just tasted like they were grilled with seasoned salt. It was also extremely dry and didn't taste fresh. The coleslaw also wasn't great but it did help cut the greasiness of the fried foods. The seafood casserole was good but is frankly not worth the +$24 price. The bread was advertised as garlic bread but was just toasted bread. TOURISTS: this is a PSA announcement- stay AWAY! My family decided to go here instead of Crab Daddy's. Not sure why. So we finally get seated. And: 1) everyone is crammed in like sardines! Not just our table - EVERY table. You can't even walk out of the room to go to the bathroom without hitting someone's elbow or back with your a$$. I'm average build. Only the kids could squirm through. Crabs with a side of the new CoViD variant, anyone? 2) service was average - the server was giving everyone the wrong meals, my brother was missing part of his combo. 3) the food wasn't the best. It's not even plated nicely. Coleslaw slopped on the plate. Hush puppies tossed on there... not what I expected for a $27 plate 4) the prices are insane. My 9 yr old son and I were on one ticket together and it was $68! I had scallops and they are served with fries. It's an up charge for a baked potato. Really? Again, that's pretty shitty for expensive seafood. We had 2 cups of crab soup (not at all creamy) at $6 each. The kids meal (fried shrimp) was $12.99! Freaking whaaa? Other places we went to in town had kids meals under $10 - yes - even for the shrimp dinner. 5) I swear they try to rip you off... they give you the itemized check, take it with your credit card, and return the card with the check for you to sign. So you can't refer back to it if needed. We THANKFULLY noticed that the TIP had already been charged on the first ticket - otherwise we would have double tipped. We ordered for curbside pickup at 7:25 and were told to pick up the food in 35 min. We were there at 8:00 and still waited until 8:45 for our food. Meh. I don't understand all the hype around this place. The she crab soup was watery and had butter floating on top, like it hadn't been stirred before it was ladled into our bowls. There was a lot of crab in it and it had a good flavor, but it was NOT creamy like I gave read in other reviews so I was disappointed. Hubby got the deviled crab and really liked it. I got blackened scallops, which tasted great on the first bite but the more of them I ate, the saltier they were. They also had grit in them. The fries are done on what seems to be onion ring batter and are really good. The slaw is made with sweet pickles and that is the only thing you taste. Draft beers are $5 for a frosty mug that doesn't even hold a pint, so we only had one each. Soft drinks are $3 and you only get one refill. We live in Glynn County and had been wanting to try this place. Today was hubby's birthday so we went, and I wish we hadn't. We got a lot of seafood, but $81 seems a bit much for the quality of the food. We were crammed into at a small table for two - they sat a large group behind us and with so little room the chairs of person behind me and I were right up against each other. I was up again at the table and couldn't move forward if I tried. When we left hubby had to get up first and pull the table back so I could get out. Our fault for not speaking up and asking to be moved, but that is a terrible place to seat anyone. Madison was a great server so no complaints there. She took our drink and food orders right away and we didn't have to wait long for anything. We did enter right when they opened at 5, so that could be part of why we got our food so quickly but Madison brought our drinks quickly and checked on us several times to make sure we were ok. The food was OK, but I don't think I'll be back. Its been two hours since we ate and I have indigestion. It's a tourist trap with terrible parking and overpriced food. We are renting a place on the island and this place came highly recommended for casual, good seafood dishes. I ordered the crab legs at market price. Our group was seated promptly. It was extremely loud inside. I know I'm a geriatric millennial and all but I couldn't hear the person next to me. Half of Our table received their drinks within ten seconds and then the other half never got their drinks. We had to ask for our beers. Then much much much later we received our food. The waitress never once checked on us. The crab legs were cold. The rest of the food looked dull and mediocre. The market price on the crab was $55. Pretty crazy for cold extra salty snow crab.
